  Consider the following Business requirement. There are some templates of documents on a server (MS OFFICE format) The users should be able to edit the documents and save a copy in the server. The users SHOULD NOT be able to save a local copy. i.e That option should be not available. Do I have any feature\hack to do this with MS Office? Think about a solution like google docs without the Download options. It is ideal but needs a lot of effort to implement it.

  I would like to produce a single graph containing both: (1) a scatter plot (2) either histograms or kernel density functions of the Y and X variables to the left of the Y axis and below the X axis.   Hello everyone, I'm writing a compiler that converts source code (written in a small imperative programming language) to Intel AT&T 32-bit assembler. I tend to spend a lot of time debugging, because of nasty offset-mistakes etc. in the generated code, and I would like to know if anyone knows of a tool to "walk through" the generated assembler code step-by-step, visualizing what's on the stack etc. I use Ubuntu Linux as my development platform, and I'm comfortable with the terminal -- a GUI-program would be nice though. Does it exist? Or is there a good reason it doesn't (maybe the problem isn't so straightforward..?) If you have good ideas for approaching debugging tasks in assembly code, I'll be glad to hear from you!

  Reading from the googleVis package vignette: "With the googleVis package users can create easily web pages with interactive charts based on R data frames and display them either via the R.rsp package or within their own sites". Following the instructions I was able to see the sample charts, using the plot method for gvis objects. This method by default creates a rsp-file in the rsp/myAnalysis folder of the googleVis package, using the type and chart id information of the object and displays the output using the local web server of the R.rsp package (port 8074 by default). Could anybody help me (or provide some link) on the procedure someone has to follow in order to embed such charts into an existing web site (e.g. a joomla site)?

  Hello to everybody. I've found a very good article about how to use EntLib Validation Block for server validation in MVC 2. But as there pointed out The current design of EntLib’s Validation Application Block uses the Composite pattern; that is, when we ask for validation for an object, it returns back a single validator object that contains a list of all the validation work to be done. While this is very convenient from a normal usage scenario, the unfortunate side-effect is that we can’t “peek inside” to see what the individual validations are that it’s doing, and therefore can’t generate the appropriate client-side validation hints. So how is it possible to implement client side validation for EntLib? Is there work around?

• How to hide zero values in bar3 plot in MATLAB

  I've got a 2-D histogram (the plot is 3D - several histograms graphed side by side) that I've generated with the bar3 plot command. However, all the zero values show up as flat squares in the x-y plane. Is there a way I can prevent MATLAB from displaying the values? I already tried replacing all zeros with NaNs, but it didn't change anything about the plot. Here's the code I've been experimenting with: x1=normrnd(50,15,100,1); %generate random data to test code x2=normrnd(40,13,100,1); x3=normrnd(65,12,100,1); low=min([x1;x2;x3]); high=max([x1;x2;x3]); y=linspace(low,high,(high-low)/4); %establish consistent bins for histogram z1=hist(x1,y); z2=hist(x2,y); z3=hist(x3,y); z=[z1;z2;z3]'; bar3(z) As you can see, there are quite a few zero values on the plot. • Workflow for statistical analysis and report writing

  Does anyone have any wisdom on workflows for data analysis related to custom report writing? The use-case is basically this: Client commissions a report that uses data analysis, e.g. a population estimate and related maps for a water district. The analyst downloads some data, munges the data and saves the result (e.g. adding a column for population per unit, or subsetting the data based on district boundaries). The analyst analyzes the data created in (2), gets close to her goal, but sees that needs more data and so goes back to (1). Rinse repeat until the tables and graphics meet QA/QC and satisfy the client. Write report incorporating tables and graphics. Next year, the happy client comes back and wants an update. This should be as simple as updating the upstream data by a new download (e.g. get the building permits from the last year), and pressing a "RECALCULATE" button, unless specifications change. At the moment, I just start a directory and ad-hoc it the best I can. I would like a more systematic approach, so I am hoping someone has figured this out... I use a mix of spreadsheets, SQL, ARCGIS, R, and Unix tools. Thanks! PS: Below is a basic Makefile that checks for dependencies on various intermediate datasets (w/ ".RData" suffix) and scripts (".R" suffix). Make uses timestamps to check dependencies, so if you 'touch ss07por.csv', it will see that this file is newer than all the files / targets that depend on it, and execute the given scripts in order to update them accordingly. This is still a work in progress, including a step for putting into SQL database, and a step for a templating language like sweave. Note that Make relies on tabs in its syntax, so read the manual before cutting and pasting. • Techniques for Visualizing Data

  I'm looking into providing several methods of visualizing a large volume of data. This may include, but will not be limited to, simple graphing. The techniques I'm exploring will involve shapes, text and lines. It will also involve interaction with elements (hiding, focusing, etc.) and animation (shifting, dragging, systematic reorganizing, etc.) of those elements. SVG or Canvas seem like the obvious choices (in conjunction with a JS library--probably jQuery), but the lack of cross-browser availability is a concern. I'd prefer to avoid Flash/Flex, but right now it's the only rock solid, cross-browser technology I've found if support for IE7/8 is a requirement. Does anyone have any other suggestions or any additional information that would make a technology I've listed seem even more appealing? Thanks.

  I'm in a situation where I'm using an ItemsControl with a SurfaceScrollViewer bound to an AsyncVirtualizingCollection and all of the data is being requested. I'm aware that it's due to the ItemsControl request all of the data but I'm not sure how to get around this. I've tried the AsyncVirtualizingCollection bound to a ListBox and it works fine and I'm now attempting to having it bound to a SurfaceListBox but the problem persists. • How to represent double values as circles in a 2d matrix in java

  Hello, so I want to write a matrix explorer which enables me to reorder rows and columns of a matrix. For this porpouse I used the Jtable class. Now the problem that I have is that it is very difficult to reorder a matrix by looking at double values, so I would like to print the matrix not with the double values but with circles in which the radius of the circle represents the value. So that I can tell the difference between big values and small values quicker. Anybody has any idea how I can turn this double values into filled circles with JTable or any table class for that matter?

I also have checked if the file exists and is a file with File methods and it is as well. Is this a result of me not closing a previous Input/Output properly? I've tried to check everything and I am fairly positive I close all streams as soon as they finish... Help! :)

• Examples of how to visualize a versioning system?

  My shop is trying to formalize the release management process for an OSS product we maintain. It's a sort of a web development framework/CMS kind of thing, as in it's a product that other projects are built on top of. This makes clear communication about the versioning system especially critical for developers that are using the tool. I'm hoping to find some examples of how best to graph this system so we can communicate it better internally and with outside developers. I know there are lots of standards and best practices around versioning, so I'm hoping this extends to some sort of visual vocabulary as well. As one example, there is a nifty graph at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versioning#Software_Versioning_schemes. Are there any guides out there on how these sorts of things should be designed?

The closest I can come is multiple cubes, so for int[,,,] [5,10,2,7] would be cube 5, row 10, column 2, layer(depth) 7. I'm not sure if this is the best way to visualize a 4-D array, though... and I'm not sure it's the best way to teach it... however it does have the advantage of being extensible ( a row cubes, a table of cubes, a cube of cubes ( 6-d array ) Cubes through time is another way that I can think of it. Am I on the right track here?
