• VMWare guest OS is not using full hard drive space

  Hey everyone, I'm wondering if you can give me some insight on how to figure this out. I've recently virtualized a w2k3 server that had 10GB C:\ drive size. Once I finished virtualizing it, I expanded the disk to 20GB for C:\ and within guest OS (W2K3) computer management settings, you can see it recognizes as 20GB partition C:. But for some reason, if I opened windows explorer and see the properties of C:\, it will only show total size of 10GB. Does anyone know how to solve this or even had this problem before?

• If Ubuntu freezes when running off a USB drive, will it freeze after full installation?

  I'm planning to install Ubuntu on an aging Compaq Presario V5000. I've established that the Unity desktop is not suited to this laptop, and am now using the standard (Gnome?) desktop. I'm grappling with ndiswrapper and my wireless chipset. But I'm still running it off a USB drive before I take the plunge and install properly to my internal HD. Part of my reticence in completing the installation is I'm experience freezes after about 10-20 minutes usage. Is this likely to be in any way related to running it off the USB drive?

• How do I safely use a virus infected USB drive in Ubuntu?

  I have an USB drive which I know is virus infected (an anti-virus on my friend's machine detected it). Unfortunately neither of us know the virus name and I don't want to take the risk of plugging it to my Windows box again. Of course, in all probability the virus affects only Windows. (But I'm not sure) I want to know if I can safely plug the USB into my Ubuntu Lucid laptop and copy the stuff I need from the drive. • Files turned into folders on external hard drive

  I have a networked hard drive where I like to store audio/video/software and all sorts of other files for my house. While the software files are all intact and working, many of my video and audio files have been turned into folders! Can anyone explain why this is happening, how I can prevent it, and if it is possible to revert these "folders" back into files. Thanks much! An example of what the folders are named: "Highschool Graduation.avi", "Birthday party.avi", "Somesong.mp3" The HDD is connected to a Linksys E4200 router (Firmware Version: 2.0.37). This is how the HDD is networked.

• Hard drive caught malware and all folders are in shortcuts

  I have an external hard drive from Seagate. I think it accidently caught a malware/virus, since all the files in there became shortcut folders. I have very important folders and now I cannot access them at all. I did not have an antivirus program; I just formatted the PC and forgot to install one. Just recently, I installed Avira and it caught the malware, but since I removed the malware via Avira, I can't access anything now. Please help me on what I need to do. I am really lost.

• Hibernate speed, and hard drive temperature

  My computer is taking in the region of 4 minutes or so, to hibernate 4GB of RAM. Also, resting my hand on the top of it is rather hot to the touch, so I ran CrystalDisk Info and that is reporting a temperature of 49 degrees C. I It's a Western Digital 5400 rpm drive, I've had it in the laptop since I bought it for most of the 2.75 years I've had it. Power on Count is 1219 Power on Hours is 3940 hours Boot up time is quicker than resuming from hibernate, too. Is there anything I can / should check ? Advice is greatly appreciated.

• Which file system to choose from when formatting 1.5TB hard drive (hdd)

  I plan to buy a 1.5TB hard drive soon. I would like to know which file system to choose from when I'm gonna format it. With FAT32, there is a limitation concerning the maximum file size (4GB) that bugs me since I might save large files such as DVD images which are over 4GB. On the other hand, NTFS allows me to save larger files, but seems less compatible with other OS than Windows and is also proprietary to Microsoft. Are there other alternatives ? Can you give me your advices ?

• Flash Media Server slow over SSL

  We are using FMS to host a VoD site. We host FMS internally (we do not use a CDN). We recently installed an SSL certificate to alleviate connection issues for clients (they're networks either block or don't support RTMP), however we're noticing that when streaming in RTMPS connections are drastically slower (on the order of Mbps). I know SSL causes some amount of over head but both client and server show almost no signs of exertion. Speedtest.net and a locally hosted speed test confirm that bandwidth is not an issue. I'm really not a network guru, so I'm at a loss as to where to check next. Do any of you have an idea why streaming media would run so slow over SSL?

• Actual High Speed USB flash drive

  I'm looking to upgrade my EEE 1000H by possibly replacing the HDD with simple (internal) usb connected storage. The problem I'm having now is that I can't seem to find any actual high speed usb sticks. They all proclaim high speeds, but usually turn out to be ~30 mb/s - much lower than the 60 mb/s (480 mbit/s / 8 ) I understand USB 2.0 is at - no ? Can anyone enlighten me as to why no USB sticks seem to go past that low bar or alternatively point me in the direction of some actual high speed usb sticks ?   I have a brand new HP Quad Core - 6GB Ram - running 64-bit Windows 7. Running Norton Internet 2010. I try copying music files from HD to 16 GB thumbdrive and get blue screen after a few files have transfered over to thumbdrive. Computer blinks once and boom - blue screen and then reboots. This is really aggravating. I stopped anti-virus, pulled other USB attached devices - still does same thing. Any solutions out there?

  I'm thinking of buying a drive dock to put my unused large HDD to use. I will also probably use the dock to backup files and swap the drives regularly. I have a few questions though: Are they noisy? I plan to use them via USB (because I don't think I have eSata connectors), am I gonna want to kill myself every time I backup?   My exchange box went offline this AM. The logs show The device, \Device\Harddisk1, has a bad block. I tried running chkdsk D: /x /r but that didn't help either. I went to the Exchange Manager and tried to move the .stm file from D: to C: but got Exchange System Manager The database files in this store are corrupted. ID no: c104173b Exchange System Manager What else is there to try just to get this online for a few hours until I can get onsite to change the drive. This is a Windows Server 2003 server.

• Why dd is not a reliable command to write bootable .iso files to USB thumb drive?

  As the answers here indicate Ubuntu .iso s are not expected to boot if copied with dd to a USB thumb drive. Now my question is why is so that some Linux distributions have the option to directly write their bootable .iso file to a thumb drive with dd but some (read Ubuntu) have not(for Ubuntu I think it has to be converted to .img first). Is it for some architectural difference in .isos? Or is it due to any limitation of dd itself?I don't know if it is off-topic here. I can move it to a more proper place if the community thinks so or suggests one. Some explanation would be appreciable.

• System stuttering caused by hard drive

  My system keeps freezing for about 1-2 second every time I try to do something. For example, when I enter URL in browser, it freezes and starts working after few seconds. It is probably related to hard drive. I installed HD tune and when benchmark is in progress, causing constant disk use, everything works fine in background, there are no lags. What can be the reason of this issue? My hardware is Acer Aspire 7740G-6969 running on Windows 7.

• How do I access an external hard drive plugged into my router?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and I own a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router with a USB port built into it. Naturally, the router came with instructions on how to mount and view this drive with both Windows and Mac, but nothing about Linux. I have an WD Elements 1 TB external HDD that I would like to plug into the router and share across my home network. However, when I plug it in, absolutely nothing happens on my desktop. I checked on two different machines and nothing seems to indicate that the drive has been mounted (or is even seen at all) on either machine. I am fully aware that it may not be possible to do this with a Linux system, but I was hoping someone might have a suggestion. Thanks!

• Data transfer is extrem slow after partitioning extern usb drive

  I bought an extern usb 3.0 drive with 500 gb capacity. OS is Windows 7. I use it with an usb 2.0 slot, no prob. Initially I used it without making several partitions and it was fast as hell. Then I had the great idea to make partitions, one for programs, one for data and one for backup. I chose the free EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.1. and ended up with these partitions: F:Apps, primary, NTFS, 100gb H:Data, logic, NTFS, 250gb B:Backup, logic, NTFS, 150gb THE PROBLEM: When I copy files from C: to F: I get a transfer rate of about 100 KB/S ! When I copy files from C: to H: I get a transfer rate of about 4 MB/S ! thats all muuuch to slow, slower then before. What can I do to speed the shit up? Thanks in advance!

Hope it is clear what I mean. Partial hints are very welcome as well since I am pretty new to spreadsheeting.

• Missing hard drive total space in Windows

  I have an HP Pavilion DM4 with a 750 GB hard drive. A few days ago, I installed Windows 8 on it, so I am now dual booting Win7 and Win8 (and I also have a 100 MB system reserved partition). I noticed that I am only able to see 700 GB of hard disk space (169 for Win 8 and 529 for Win 7). I booted of an Ubuntu 11.04 LiveCD and in the disk utility it said that my Win 8 partition is 182 GB and my Win 7 partition is 568 GB, correctly adding up to 750 GB. I would like to reclaim the missing space in its respective partitions. Any advice on how to go about doing this?

• Can't click allow button in flash on firefox

  I have a webapp embedding some flash content in an iframe. The flash part is requesting access to the webcam. On firefox/mac os, user's can't click the allow button. This only happens when the page embedding the swf file is loaded in the iframe, it works fine when laded separately. Has anyone else faced a similar problem? D you know any workarounds? Thanks, Alex
