• HDD is not recognized/initialized via USB, only via SATA - is a reformat through USB a bad idea?

  I have a 4TB Hitachi HDD that I purchased in Europe (I use it as a backup disk); I use Windows 7. When I connect it to a SATA port, it is recognized in Windows Explorer and gives no problems, even after transferring 3TB at a time or after being on for days. When I connect it via a SATA-to-USB2.0 adapter, it is also recognized, but when I transfer a large amount of data, it will intermittently stop being recognized by Windows Explorer and cancel the transfer. When I connect it via an external enclosure (which is technically a SATA-to-USB3.0 adapter), it does not display at all in Windows Explorer, but Disk Management will show the drive, albeit uninitialized (prompts for format). I only got the external enclosure because I want to backup my files more conveniently (instead of having to open the computer case each time). Do you advise against reformat/initialization via the external enclosure? Can it screw up things in an irrevocable way (Master Boot Record etc.)?

• Virtual Machines: What components should I upgrade to improve running virtual machines?

  at work I need to have one or sometimes two instances of a vmware virtual Windows 7 machine running on my real Windows 7 machine. The computer I'm using is Dell Precision 490 from 2009 I believe, possibly earlier. Running Windows 7 ultimate. Problems while running VM's: The entire computer slows down when a vmware instance is running. Pages take a while to react to a scroll, applications take forever to launch, and programs hang both in the virtual machines and on the real one. So, what components should I upgrade to improve this? I guess a more pointed question would be, which components will help the most? Possible options: Getting 8gb of RAM instead of 4gb new graphics card new processors? (Is that really an option?) My intuition tells me it will be a combination of the RAM and graphics card. There is also the possibility that an '09 tower just isn't cut out for vm's and our business should purchase a new tower.

• Moving SharePoint 2010 to a new domain

  I have a small SharePoint 2010 farm (1 WFE / App Server & 1 SQL server) Our organisation is currently mirgrating to our holding company's global domain, so we now have a new local DC on site with trusts between the current domain and the new domain. I am going to need to move our SP Farm to the new domain and possibly rename servers to fit into the global naming convention (we are trying to avoid this at the moment, but might become a requirement) If there a way to script (stsadm / powershell) the user profiles and permission accross to the new domain? and on the server side, is it as simple as joining the servers to the new domain and updating all the service / farm accounts to accounts on new domain? I have googled this a bit, but everything I have found so far refers to MOSS 2007 or earlier. Any help / advise would be appreciated.

• Internet (Flash) video without a PC

  I am looking to retire my HTPC. So much of what we do with it can be done with one of our video game consoles or an AppleTV that is seems like a waste of space, power and time to maintain. The trouble is that my wife does streaming yoga classes served up via specific websites. I am assuming they are Flash based and so far I have been unable to find Apps for these content providers. My question is, is there a GOOD way to handle flash-based or even HTML5/h.264 web content with one of the other Internet enabled devices in our stack? So far we have: Nintendo Wii Playstation 3 XBox 360 And we're looking to purchase a current generation AppleTV. update The sites are YogisAnonymmous.com and YogaJournal.com, both are confirmed as Flash.

• Dreamweaver Files uploaded to Win 2008 server cause login prompt

  I have a customer who uses a 4 year old version of Dreamweaver to edit her webpages. My hosting reseller account is with a company that uses Windows Server 2008. Every time my customer edits a page and uploads it, I have to set the permissions for that file to be readable, manually from the site's control panel. The customer is furious with me because her files cause the login prompt. I am able to upload files myself that remain readable to the site with both Filezilla and with Frontpage. I am assuming that her Dreamweaver settings are the cause of the problem but I don't have that program myself and don't know what to advise her. Any suggestions?

• Dual Screens with Widescreen monitors?

  I want to build a new computer and purchase new monitor(s). At my old job I had two 20" 4:3 and I absolutely loved this setup. However, the stores in my country only seem to have widescreen monitors nowadays, and the only 4:3 LCDs i have been able to find are 17". My question is: Do widescreens suck for using them as dual monitors? Can anyone with this setup comment on their experience with having multiple widescreen monitors? Would it be better to get three 17" 4:3 LCDs instead of two widescreens? If i go with widescreens, should i go with the smallest ones i can find? Purchasing a single big widescreen monitor is not an option for me, since being able to maximize an app on a specific area of the screen is a must have for me and im not willing to use "hacky" apps for this purpose that do a crappy job.   Hi there, I have recently installed wordpress but i would like to configure extensionless URLs .. I am using IIS7 but on a shared server. I presume i cna add something to web.config file?? I am little bit confused, in IIS7 and asp.net mvc it is done via code... but in PHP i don't think it is .... so the only alternative is to use a re-write module but i can't as I am on a shared server and can't install ISAPI stuff.. so I was wondering if there is a way to do the mapping i.e. when going to testme it would actually load testme.php Any advise really appreciated Thanks

  I'm getting the above mentioned error when backing up with ZRM, which is using mysqldump for backup. mysqldump --opt --extended-insert --single-transaction --create-options --default-character-set=utf8 --user=" " -p --all-databases "/nfs/backup/mysql01/dailyrun/20091216043001/backup.sql" mysqldump: Error 2020: Got packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes when dumping table TICKET_ATTACHMENT at row: 2286 I have increased the size for 'max_allowed_packet' to be 1G in /etc/my.cnf which is the server setting and for the client side setting I've set it by running this command: mysql -u -p --max_allowed_packet=1G And I have verified that on the client and server side they are of the same value. • Unable to remove "Run this program as an administrator" (greyed out) with Excel 2010

  I have issue with one of the user in Terminal Server 2008 R2 who has "Run this program as an administrator" checked and greyed out with Excel 2010. This causes UAC to popup requesting for administrator credential whenever user want to start excel. I found in excel 2010 properties Compatibility tab "Run this program as an administrator" is checked and greyed out (Unable to make any change) This issue only occurs in Excel 2010, all other Office programs does not has this option checked and greyed out. Currently UAC is set to Default (Second level to top) Other users in terminal server do not have "Run this program as an administrator" checked and it is NOT greyed out. The user who has issue is in the same group and has the setting as other users who doesn't has the issue in AD. Could anyone advise me how could I remove this "Run this program as an administrator" in option in Excel 2010? Thank you.

  Hi, I've been battling with this issue for couple of months. I need to send bulk mail (not spam) through my social network to users in situations like newsletters, site invitations (when user imports their address book contacts) I'm using shared hosting and it limits 500 mails per hour. Even though i manage to send mails most of them end up in user's spam box. After researching these are the solutions that i finally came up with. 1) Use Google Apps SMTP (http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/features.html) 2) Move into VPS 3) Use shared hosting with throttle enabled Please advise me on what to choose. Will using Google Apps prevent mail being sent as spam? I can't use other 3rd party SMTP like iContact or Aweber as "invitation sending script" will send emails to thousands of contacts, depending on user's addressbook. Thanks in advance

• Azure VM with many IPs or SSL certificates

  I am looking to move our hosting environment to Azure and by doing so have created a sandpit VM to figure things out. We host around 300-400 websites in IIS and about 2% of these sites have unique, non wildcard certificates all requiring a unique public IP in our current setup. Can you get a range of IPs pointing to 1 VM/Endpoint? Or is it possible to create an SSL proxy? I've never created an SSL proxy but like the idea of it. I'd need advise here on how to proceed if this is the best option. Sorry if this has been answered! Sorry also if my question isn't worded eloquently.

• ISP Load Balancing with ISA 2006

  I understand that ISA 2006 has an integrated Network Load Balancing feature. We also recently acquired a second internet line through a second service provider. I know it is possible to purchase a NLB router for using both incoming lines but this is not the route we would like to take if at all possible. Thus, is it possible to have two ISA 2006 servers each with there own external connection, Load balanced to be viewed as one gateway? My thought was to have two ISA servers each with three NICs, one external, one internal and one for cross communication. I am under the impression that this should work but was hoping someone else has had experience with it.

• OSX Keyboard Shortcuts in Dialogs?

  On Windows, every dialog box includes underlined letters that you can activate using the Alt key. I use these "Alt" keyboard shortcuts all the time; I'm missing them as I'm trying to switch to OSX. On OSX, all I can find is Tab navigation, which requires you to press Tab seven or eight times to get anywhere in most dialog boxes. (And even that is hidden by default: you have to enable "Full keyboard access" in the "Keyboard & Mouse" control panel to be able to Tab between buttons.) Is there some way I can get something like the Windows Alt accelerators for OSX dialogs? I'm willing to write Automator code, download/purchase software, etc. Specifically, I'm imagining maybe something where you do some shortcut command and then start typing the name of the button, and hit Enter to push the button...?

  I am thinking about the way of establishing some-sort of real-time connection between MySQLpowered shopping cart and internal system that is running on PostgreSQL. Could you give me some sort of insight on this topic? For example, I can write some sort of csv export application, then enable remote MySQL for over the internet connection and then import csv to mysql directly from PC. Or upload csv and run cron on server. But this way of import-export causing delays; so I would like to link databased (or some msort). I have never done it before and would like to hear some opinions about this. Another way "just a thought" might to implement triggers that would initiate the update process via csv; but again, I would like to avoid csv. Do you have any good advise? Maybe some specific examples?

• Unable to run VMs on hyper-v

  Folks/Mates, I need some advise and assistance regarding the testing of Hyper-V. Here is my h/ware configuration: 1) Intel i5 processor (i5-750) 2) Intel M/B DP55WB 3) 6 GB DDR3 RAM OS = Server 2008 R2 Standart (evaluation copy). I installed 2008 r2 on my machine and added hyper-v role to it. I created 2 VMs and installed OS. But after finishing the OS installation the VMs are not booting up. After finishing the OS installation, the VM reboots automatically (normal behaviour) and shows "preparing your system for first time" after that it reboots and didn't come online. Few things to notice, when I am running "securable" on my server 2008 R2 OS it shows that processor is not supporting h/ware virtulization, but (since my desktop is dual boot) when I am running "securable" on my windows 7 OS, it shows that process "does" supports hardware virtulization. VT option is already enabled in BIOS. Any help and suggestions are highly appreciated :) Thanks in advance. Pradeep Rawat

I am a freelance developer and I have recently purchased Adobe Photoshop CS6 through the Adobe.com (small/medium business site, volume licensing). However, after downloading and installing it a couple of days ago, I realised that I may require the complete 'Adobe Creative Suite 6' instead. Does anyone out there know if this it is possible to upgrade your purchase, and not just the specific product you've bought previously? • E71 update my music files keep getting disconnected via USB

  Previously, i can update my music files using Oviplayer to my E71 Nokia. Now whenever i plug in my E71 i choose PC suite. i go to Oviplayer in my laptop. and i select the mobile phone section and i press the connect button, automatically my phone is disconnected via USB. the alternative is to choose media transfer or media player. The same thing happens. And the connecting screen at Ovi player is like hanged. I have previously transferred songs, but only twice. first time this has happened to me. I do not know why. • Allow image upload - most efficient way?

  Hey everyone, In my site, I currently only allow users to import images from other sites rather than uploading it themselves. The main reason for this is because I don't have much storage space on my host (relatively speaking). The host charges quite a bit for additional space. What are the alternatives to hosting images users upload (max 1mb size). Would it be a good idea to purchase separate cheap hosting with "unlimited space" (I know that's not true, but I'm guessing it's more than 1gb)? Or are there some caveats with this approach (e.g. security since the site should not be browsable, but accessed via another server)? Are there alternative ideas that I could employ?   I have an apache sitting in front of two tomcat app servers(one on the same physical server, the other on a different one) that does time consuming work(0.5 sec to 10sec per request). The apache http server is getting killed by an average of 1 to 2 concurrent requests per second. both Server spec is about 2GB of RAM. • Why is my CPU fan so loud?

  I bought an old PC to use as a second PC. Everything is fine, except for one thing. The CPU fan is terribly loud! I did a lot with PCs but I never did much with CPU fans. If I want to replace it, what do I have to look for? The fan is 8cm long on each side and 11cm diameter. It is just clipped to the cooler. The PC is a P4 3 GHz. I don't want to spend much money, as I only paid 50 euro for the whole PC. I would prefer to buy a fan for 1-3 dollar or something at eBay but I am not quite sure which one I should buy (which fits). Can you advise?
