  • Team Software Development using Ruby on Rails

    - by Panoy
    I used to work alone on small to medium sized programming projects before and have no experience working in a team environment. Currently, there will be 3 of us in an in-house software development team that is tasked to develop a number of software for an academic institution. We have decided to use the web for the majority of the projects and are planning to choose Ruby on Rails for this and I would like to ask for your inputs, advices and approaches with regards to software development as a team using the RoR web framework. One thing that has really confounded me is how you divide the programming tasks of a project if there are 3 of you that are really doing the coding. It’s obvious that we as developers approach a problem in a modular way and finish it one after another. If the project consists of 3 modules, should each one of us focus on each of those modules? Would it be faster that way? How about if the 3 of us would focus on one module first (that’s what I really prefer). Is using a distributed version control system such as Git the answer to this type of problem? Please don’t forget to put your tips and experiences with regards to team software development. Cheers!

  • Very basic beginner Ruby question to do with elsif and ranges [migrated]

    - by MattKneale
    I've been trying to get to grasps with Ruby (for all of an hour) and this is my first language. I've got the following code: var_comparison = 5 print "Please enter a number: " my_num = Integer(gets.chomp) if my_num > var_comparison print "You picked a number greater than 5!" elsif my_num < var_comparison print "You picked a number less than 5!" elsif my_num > 99 print "Your number is too large, man." else print "You picked the number 5!" end Clearly the interpreter has no way of distinguishing between accepting the rule 5 or 99. How do I make it so that any number between 6-99 returns "You picked a number greater than 5!", but a number 100 or greater returns "Your number is too large, man!"? Do I need to specifically state a range somehow? How would I best do that? Would it by the normal range methods e.g. if my_num 6..99 or if my_num.between(6..99) ?

  • Passenger, Nginx, and Capistrano - Passenger not launching Rails app at all

    - by Throlkim
    Essentially, my route is working perfectly, Passenger seems to be loading - all is hunky-dory. Except that nothing Railsy happens. Here's my Nginx log from starting the server to the first request (ignore the different domain/route - it's because I haven't moved the new domain over yet, and it's returning a 403 error because there's no index file in the public folder): [ pid=24559 file=ext/nginx/HelperServer.cpp:826 time=2009-11-10 00:49:13.227 ]: Passenger helper server started on PID 24559 [ pid=24559 file=ext/nginx/HelperServer.cpp:831 time=2009-11-10 00:49:13.227 ]: Password received. 2009/11/10 00:49:53 [error] 24578#0: *1 directory index of "/var/www/***/current/public/" is forbidden, client: 188.221.195.27, server: ***, request: "GET / HTTP/1.1", host: "***" 2009/11/10 00:49:54 [error] 24578#0: *1 open() "/var/www/***/current/public/favicon.ico" failed (2: No such file or directory), client: 188.221.195.27, server: ***, request: "GET /favicon.ico HTTP/1.1", host: "***", referrer: "***" Someone on the RubyOnRails IRC channel suggested that it might be a webserver permissions problem. I had a suspicion that it might be a filesystem permission problem, but then Nginx runs as www-data and Passenger as root. I can load static files from within the public directory fine, but no Rails application is being launched. Does anyone have an idea? My head is gradually melting away figuring this one out! Edit: Here's the vhost file: server { listen 80; server_name ***; passenger_enabled on; location / { root /var/www/***/current/public; index index.html index.htm; } #error_page 404 /404.html; # redirect server error pages to the static page /50x.html # error_page 500 502 503 504 /50x.html; location = /50x.html { root html; } }

  • Paperclip wont save image in rails app

    - by Micke
    Hello stackoverflow. I am trying to use Paperclip with my rails app to add an avatar to a user but it wont save my image when creating the user. This is what the model looks like: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_attached_file :avatar And the registerform in haml: - form_for :user, @user, :url => { :action => "signup" }, :html => { :multipart => true } do |f| ... ... %li %div{:class => "header"} Profilepicture %div{:class => "input"} = f.file_field :avatar And when i look in the log this is what is being passet to the "signup" action: Parameters: {"commit"=>"Save", "action"=>"signup", "controller"=>"user/register", "user"=>{"name"=>"Micke Lisinge", "birthmonth"=>"07", "password_confirmation"=>"[FILTERED]", "nickname"=>"lisinge", "avatar"=>#<File:/tmp/RackMultipart20100426-3076-1x04oxy-0>, "gen"=>"m", "birthday"=>"23", "password"=>"[FILTERED]", "birthyear"=>"1992", "email"=>"[email protected]"}} [paperclip] Saving attachments. Paperclip says it is saving the template but when i look in the public folder in my app it has created a system but the system folder is empty. So it seems like it isnt saving the picture to the folder. It gets handled by the form and saved in my /tmp folder. Maybe you guys have any tips or know what this problem might be? Thanks in advance, Micke.

  • rails search nested set (categories and sub categories)

    - by bob
    Hello, I am using the http://github.com/collectiveidea/awesome_nested_set awesome nested set plugin and currently, if I choose a sub category as my category_id for an item, I can not search by its parent. Category.parent Category.Child I choose Category.child as the category that my item is in. So now my item has category_id of 4 stored in it. If I go to a page in my rails application, lets say teh Category page and I am on the Category.parent's page, I want to show products that have category_id's of all the descendants as well. So ideally i want to have a find method that can take into account the descendants. You can get the descendants of a root by calling root.descendants (a built in plugin method). How would I go about making it so I can query a find that gets the descendants of a root instead of what its doing now which is binging up nothing unless the product had a specific category_id of the Category.parent. I hope I am being clear here. I either need to figure out a way to create a find method or named_scope that can query and return an array of objects that have id's corresponding tot he descendants of a root OR if I have any other options, what are they? I thought about creating a field in my products table like parent_id which can keep track of the parent so i can then create two named scopes one finding the parent stuff and one finding the child stuff and chaining them. I know I can create a named scope for each child and chain them together for multiple children but this seems a very tedious process and also, if you add more children, you would need to specify more named scopes.

  • Devise not allowing active resource to access the services

    - by Saurabh Pandit
    In my application there are two folders one for a rails application and another for a ruby application. In the ruby folder I have created a ruby file in which I have written code to access some model which is present in the rails application using active resource. Sample code is shown below : active_resource_example.rb require 'rubygems' require 'active_resource' class Website < ActiveResource::Base self.site = "http://localhost:3000/admin/" self.user = "user" self.password = "password" end websites = Website.find(:all) puts websites.inspect In my rails application I have used ActiveAdmin gem which uses devise for authentication. On rails Server I get the following result : Started GET "/admin/websites.json" for 192.168.1.37 at 2011-11-12 14:41:06 +0530 Processing by Admin::WebsitesController#index as JSON Completed in 43ms And on my terminal where I executed active_resource_example.rb, I got following error : user@user:~/Desktop$ ruby active_resource_example.rb /home/user/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/activeresource-3.1.1/lib/active_resource/connection.rb:132:in `handle_response': Failed. Response code = 401. Response message = Unauthorized . (ActiveResource::UnauthorizedAccess) from /home/user/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/activeresource-3.1.1/lib/active_resource/connection.rb:115:in `request' from /home/user/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/activeresource-3.1.1/lib/active_resource/connection.rb:80:in `block in get' from /home/user/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/activeresource-3.1.1/lib/active_resource/connection.rb:218:in `with_auth' from /home/user/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/activeresource-3.1.1/lib/active_resource/connection.rb:80:in `get' from /home/user/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/activeresource-3.1.1/lib/active_resource/base.rb:894:in `find_every' from /home/user/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/activeresource-3.1.1/lib/active_resource/base.rb:806:in `find' from active_resource_example.rb:12:in `<main>' user@user:~/Desktop$ I tried this with another application in which Devise authentication is not used with the same configuration I used in active_resource_example.rb, there I got the result. Desperately need some solution to this issue.

  • Rails, if instance is in a scope?

    - by Joseph Silvashy
    I using rails 3 and I can't seem to check if a given instance is in a scope, see here: p = Post.find 6 +----+----------+-------------------------+-------------------------+-------------------------+-----------+ | id | title | publish_date | created_at | updated_at | published | +----+----------+-------------------------+-------------------------+-------------------------+-----------+ | 6 | asfdfdsa | 2010-03-28 22:33:00 UTC | 2010-03-28 22:33:46 UTC | 2010-03-28 22:33:46 UTC | true | +----+----------+-------------------------+-------------------------+-------------------------+-----------+ I have a menu scope which looks like: scope :menu, where("published != ?", false).limit(4) When I run it I get: Post.menu.all +----+------------------+------------------+------------------+-------------------+-----------+ | id | title | publish_date | created_at | updated_at | published | +----+------------------+------------------+------------------+-------------------+-----------+ | 1 | Lorem ipsum | 2010-03-23 07... | 2010-03-23 07... | 2010-03-28 21:... | true | | 2 | fdasf | 2010-03-28 21... | 2010-03-28 21... | 2010-03-28 21:... | true | | 3 | Ruby’s Imple... | 2010-03-28 21... | 2010-03-28 21... | 2010-03-28 21:... | true | | 4 | dsaD | 2010-03-28 22... | 2010-03-28 22... | 2010-03-28 22:... | true | +----+------------------+------------------+------------------+-------------------+-----------+ Which is correct, but if I try to check if p is in the the menu scope using: Post.menu.exists?(p) I get true when it should be false What is the proper way to find out if a given instance of something is in a scope?

  • Rails form protection questions, hidden field

    - by user284194
    I have a live rails website and I want to have a form with a lot of fields on it. I have set up validations and allowed formatting for every field. I've tested it quite a bit and it seems to catch anything I throw at it. I think it's almost ready to go live, but I want to quadruple check if there's anything else I should do to protect it. My site has a low volume of visitors, but I want it to be a safe as possible. I'd like to avoid using a captcha if I can. I've read that you can use a hidden field to protect forms against bots. Do people recommend this instead of using a captcha, or even using it with a captcha? my form is really standard: <% form_for(@entry) do |f| %> ... <%= f.submit 'Create' %> <% end %> Any suggestions or code samples would be greatly appreciated.

  • How will Arel affect rails' includes() 's capabilities.

    - by Tim Snowhite
    I've looked over the Arel sources, and some of the activerecord sources for Rails 3.0, but I can't seem to glean a good answer for myself as to whether Arel will be changing our ability to use includes(), when constructing queries, for the better. There are instances when one might want to modify the conditions on an activerecord :include query in 2.3.5 and before, for the association records which would be returned. But as far as I know, this is not programmatically tenable for all :include queries: (I know some AR-find-includes make t#{n}.c#{m} renames for all the attributes, and one could conceivably add conditions to these queries to limit the joined sets' results; but others do n_joins + 1 number of queries over the id sets iteratively, and I'm not sure how one might hack AR to edit these iterated queries.) Will Arel allow us to construct ActiveRecord queries which specify the resulting associated model objects when using includes()? Ex: User :has_many posts( has_many :comments) User.all(:include => :posts) #say I wanted the post objects to have their #comment counts loaded without adding a comment_count column to `posts`. #At the post level, one could do so by: posts_with_counts = Post.all(:select => 'posts.*, count(comments.id) as comment_count', :joins => 'left outer join comments on comments.post_id = posts.id', :group_by => 'posts.id') #i believe #But it seems impossible to do so while linking these post objects to each #user as well, without running User.all() and then zippering the objects into #some other collection (ugly) #OR running posts.group_by(&:user) (even uglier, with the n user queries)

  • A really smart rails helper needed

    - by Stefan Liebenberg
    In my rails application I have a helper function: def render_page( permalink ) page = Page.find_by_permalink( permalink ) content_tag( :h3, page.title ) + inline_render( page.body ) end If I called the page "home" with: <%= render_page :home %> and "home" page's body was: <h1>Home<h1/> bla bla <%= render_page :about %> <%= render_page :contact %> I would get "home" page, with "about" and "contact", it's nice and simple... right up to where someone goes and changes the "home" page's content to: <h1>Home<h1/> bla bla <%= render_page :home %> <%= render_page :about %> <%= render_page :contact %> which will result in a infinite loop ( a segment fault on webrick )... How would I change the helper function to something that won't fall into this trap? My first attempt was along the lines of: @@list = [] def render_page( permalink ) unless @@list.include?(permalink) @@list += [ permalink ] page = Page.find_by_permalink result = content_tag( :h3, page.title ) + inline_render( page.body ) @@list -= [ permalink ] return result else content_tag :b, "this page is already being rendered" end end which worked on my development environment, but bombed out in production... any suggestions? • A few questions about a Rails model for a simple addressbook app

    - by user284194
    I have a Rails application that lists information about local services. My objectives for this model are as follows: 1. Require the name and tag_list fields. 2. Require one or more of the tollfreephone, phone, phone2, mobile, fax, email or website fields. 3. If the paddress field has a value, then encode it with the Geokit plugin. Here is my entry.rb model: class Entry < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :name, :tag_list validates_presence_of :tollfreephone or :phone or :phone2 or :mobile or :fax or :email or :website acts_as_taggable_on :tags acts_as_mappable :auto_geocode=>{:field=>:paddress, :error_message=>'Could not geocode physical address'} before_save :geocode_paddress validate :required_info def required_info unless phone or phone2 or tollfreephone or mobile or fax or email or website errors.add_to_base "Please have at least one form of contact information." end end private def geocode_paddress #if paddress_changed? geo=Geokit::Geocoders::MultiGeocoder.geocode (paddress) errors.add(:paddress, "Could not Geocode address") if ! geo.success self.lat, self.lng = geo.lat,geo.lng if geo.success #end end end Requiring name and tag_list work, but requiring one (or more) of the tollfreephone, phone, phone2, mobile, fax, email or website fields does not. As for encoding with Geokit, in order to save a record with the model I have to enter an address. Which is not the behavior I want. I would like it to not require the paddress field, but if the paddress field does have a value, it should encode the geocode. As it stands, it always tries to geocode the incoming entry. The commented out "if paddress_changed?" was not working and I could not find something like "if paddress_exists?" that would work. Help with any of these issues would be greatly appreciated. I posted three questions pertaining to my model because I'm not sure if they are preventing each other from working. Thank you for reading my questions.

  • android/rails multipart upload problem

    My problem is that I try to upload an image and some text values to an rails server, and the text values end up as files, insted of just param values. • Rails 3 get raw post data and write it to tmp file

    - by Andrew
    I'm working on implementing Ajax-Upload for uploading photos in my Rails 3 app. The documentation says: For IE6-8, Opera, older versions of other browsers you get the file as you normally do with regular form-base uploads. For browsers which upload file with progress bar, you will need to get the raw post data and write it to the file. So, how can I receive the raw post data in my controller and write it to a tmp file so my controller can then process it? (In my case the controller is doing some image manipulation and saving to S3.) Some additional info: As I'm configured right now the post is passing these parameters: Parameters: {"authenticity_token"=>"...", "qqfile"=>"IMG_0064.jpg"} ... and the CREATE action looks like this: def create @attachment = Attachment.new @attachment.user = current_user @attachment.file = params[:qqfile] if @attachment.save! respond_to do |format| format.js { render :text => '{"success":true}' } end end end ... but I get this error: ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid (Validation failed: File file name must be set.): app/controllers/attachments_controller.rb:7:in `create'

  • How to implement "business rules" in Rails?

    - by Zabba
    What is the way to implement "business rules" in Rails? Let us say I have a car and want to sell it: car = Cars.find(24) car.sell car.sell method will check a few things: does current_user own the car? check: car.user_id == current_user.id is the car listed for sale in the sales catalog? check: car.catalogs.ids.include? car.id if all o.k. then car is marked as sold. I was thinking of creating a class called Rules: class Rules def initialize(user,car) @user = user @car = car end def can_sell_car? @car.user_id == @user.id && @car.catalogs.ids.include? @car.id end end And using it like this: def Car def sell if Rules.new(current_user,self).can_sell_car ..sell the car... else @error_message = "Cannot sell this car" nil end end end As for getting the current_user, I was thinking of storing it in a global variable? I think that whenever a controller action is called, it's always a "fresh" call right? If so then storing the current user as a global variable should not introduce any risks..(like some other user being able to access another user's details) Any insights are appreciated! UPDATE So, the global variable route is out! Thanks to PeterWong for pointing out that global variables persist! I've now thinking of using this way: class Rules def self.can_sell_car?(current_user, car) ......checks.... end end And then calling Rules.can_sell_car?(current_user,@car) from the controller action. Any thoughts on this new way?

  • rails semi-complex STI with ancestry data model planning the routes and controllers

    - by ere
    I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage my controller(s) and models for a particular use case. I'm building a review system where a User may build a review of several distinct types with a Polymorphic Reviewable. Country (has_many reviews & cities) Subdivision/State (optional, sometimes it doesnt exist, also reviewable, has_many cities) City (has places & review) Burrow (optional, also reviewable ex: Brooklyn) Neighborhood (optional & reviewable, ex: williamsburg) Place (belongs to city) I'm also wondering about adding more complexity. I also want to include subdivisions occasionally... ie for the US, I might add Texas or for Germany, Baveria and have it be reviewable as well but not every country has regions and even those that do might never be reviewed. So it's not at all strict. I would like it to as simple and flexible as possible. It'd kinda be nice if the user could just land on one form and select either a city or a country, and then drill down using data from say Foursquare to find a particular place in a city and make a review. I'm really not sure which route I should take? For example, what happens if I have a Country, and a City... and then I decide to add a Burrow? Could I give places tags (ie Williamsburg, Brooklyn) belong_to NY City and the tags belong to NY? Tags are more flexible and optionally explain what areas they might be in, the tags belong to a city, but also have places and be reviewable? So I'm looking for suggestions for anyone who's done something related. Using Rails 3.2, and mongoid.

  • Rails NoMethodError in loop when method exists

    - by Kevin Whitaker
    Good day all. I'm running into a bit of a problem getting a script running on my production environment, even though it works just fine on my dev box. I've verified that all the requisite gems and such are the same version. I should mention that the script is intended to be run with the script/runner command. Here is a super-condensed version of what I'm trying to do, centered around the part that's broken: def currentDeal marketTime = self.convertToTimeZone(Time.new) deal = Deal.find(:first, :conditions = ["start_time ? AND market_id = ? AND published = ?", marketTime, marketTime, self.id, 1]) return deal end markets = Market.find(all) markets.each do |market| deal = market.currentDeal puts deal.subject end Now convertToTimeZone is a method attached to the model. So, this code works just fine on my dev machine, as stated. However, attempting to run it on my production machine results in: undefined method `subject' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) If, however, I go into the console on the production box and do this: def currentDeal marketTime = self.convertToTimeZone(Time.new) deal = Deal.find(:first, :conditions = ["start_time ? AND market_id = ? AND published = ?", marketTime, marketTime, self.id, 1]) return deal end market = Market.find(1) deal = market.currentDeal puts deal.subject It returns the correct value, no problem. So what is going on? This is on rails v 2.3.5, on both machines. Thanks for any help

  • Finds in Rails 3 and ActiveRelation

    - by TheDelChop
    Guys, I'm trying to understand the new arel engine in Rails 3 and I've got a question. I've got two models, User and Task class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :tasks end class Task < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user end here is my routes to imply the relation: resources :users do resources :tasks end and here is my Tasks controller: class TasksController < ApplicationController before_filter :load_user def new @task = @user.tasks.new end private def load_user @user = User.where(:id => params[:user_id]) end end Problem is, I get the following error when I try to invoke the new action: NoMethodError: undefined method `tasks' for #<ActiveRecord::Relation:0x3dc2488> I am sure my problem is with the new arel engine, does anybody understand what I'm doing wrong? Sorry guys, here is my schema.db file: ActiveRecord::Schema.define(:version => 20100525021007) do create_table "tasks", :force => true do |t| t.string "name" t.integer "estimated_time" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.integer "user_id" end create_table "users", :force => true do |t| t.string "email", :default => "", :null => false t.string "encrypted_password", :limit => 128, :default => "", :null => false t.string "password_salt", :default => "", :null => false t.string "reset_password_token" t.string "remember_token" t.datetime "remember_created_at" t.integer "sign_in_count", :default => 0 t.datetime "current_sign_in_at" t.datetime "last_sign_in_at" t.string "current_sign_in_ip" t.string "last_sign_in_ip" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.string "username" end add_index "users", ["email"], :name => "index_users_on_email", :unique => true add_index "users", ["reset_password_token"], :name => "index_users_on_reset_password_token", :unique => true add_index "users", ["username"], :name => "index_users_on_username", :unique => true end Thank you, Joe

  • Rails form with a better URL

    - by Sam
    Wow, switching to REST is a different paradigm for sure and is mainly a headache right now. view <% form_tag (businesses_path, :method => "get") do %> <%= select_tag :business_category_id, options_for_select(@business_categories.collect {|bc| [bc.name, bc.id ]}.insert(0, ["All Containers", 0]), which_business_category(@business_category) ), { :onchange => "this.form.submit();"} %> <% end %> controller def index @business_categories = BusinessCategory.find(:all) if params[:business_category_id].to_i != 0 @business_category = BusinessCategory.find(params[:business_category_id]) @businesses = @business_category.businesses else @businesses = Business.all end respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @businesses } end end routes map.resources What I want to to is get a better URL than what this form is presenting which is the following: http://localhost:3000/businesses?business_category_id=1 Without REST I would have do something like http://localhost:3000/business/view/bbq bbq as permalink or I would have done http://localhost:300/business_categories/view/bbq and get the business that are associated with the category but I don't really know the best way of doing this. So the two questions are what is the best logic of finding a business by its categories using the latter form and number two how to get that in a pretty URL all through RESTful routes in Rails.

  • Rails helper module undefined method `sort'

    - by Magicked
    I'm trying to create a simple helper module in rails, and I'm stumped on the following error message from my new person form (app/views/people/new.html.erb): undefined method `sort' for 97:Fixnum Extracted source (around line #17): 14: <p> 15: <% nations = { 'United States of America' => 'USA', 'Canada' => 'Canada', 'Mexico' => 'Mexico', 'United Kingdom' => 'UK' } %> 16: <%= f.label :country %><br /> 17: <%= radio_buttons(:person, :country, nations) %> 18: 19: </p> 20: <p> radio_buttons is a helper module I have created for my view. Here it is (app/helpers/people_helper.rb): module PeopleHelper def radio_buttons(model_name, target_property, button_source) html='' list = button_source.sort list.each do |x| html << radio_buttons(model_name, target_property, x[1]) html << h(x[0]) html << '<br />' end return html end end The problem appears to be on the "list = button_source.sort", but I'm not sure why it says the method is undefined. I have been able to use it directly within my view code. Am I not able to use methods like this within helper modules? Do I need to include something? Thanks for any help!

  • Rails Tableless Model

    - by mplacona
    I'm creating a tableless Rails model, and am a bit stuck on how I should use it. Basically I'm trying to create a little application using Feedzirra that scans a RSS feed every X seconds, and then sends me an email with only the updates. I'm actually trying to use it as an activerecord model, and although I can get it to work, it doesn't seem to "hold" data as expected. As an example, I have an initializer method that parses the feed for the first time. On the next requests, I would like to simply call the get_updates method, which according to feedzirra, is the existing object (created during the initialize) that gets updated with only the differences. I'm finding it really hard to understand how this all works, as the object created on the initialize method doesn't seem to persist across all the methods on the model. My code looks something like: def initialize feed parse here end def get_updates feedzirra update passing the feed object here end Not sure if this is the right way of doing it, but it all seems a bit confusing and not very clear. I could be over or under-doing here, but I'd like your opinion about this approach. Thanks in advance
