• How to hide the title bar while application is loading and show it when it finishes loading?

  I have an application which uses a custom title bar. However, when my application launches, I noticed that the default title bar is shown for a brief period of time. My problem is I don't want to show the default title bar while my application is loading. How do I hide the title bar while my application is loading so that there will be no hint of it and then show it afterwards? So far, I tried the following solutions but none have worked: Hide the title bar in XML and then set the custom title bar in code. (Problem encountered: I received an error message saying: "You cannot combine custom titles with other title features".) In XML: <item name="android:windowNoTitle">true</item> In onCreate method: requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE); //... some code goes here getWindow().setFeatureInt(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE, R.layout.title_header); Set the size of the title bar in XML to 0. Then change it's size via code later. (Problem encountered: I don't know how to set the size of title bar in code. Is it possible? I tried getWindow().setAttributes() and getWindow().setLayout() but both of them didn't worked.)" • Creating a fancy search bar with Swing components

  I'm trying to come up with an elegant recreation of the search bar component in Thunderbird. The clear button doesn't appear until there is text in the box, so that screen-shot is a bit inaccurate. Should I use a layered pane and get some buttons to float above the box? (but then getting the text to not appear below the buttons would be hacky) Maybe just put buttons at the ends of the search bar and have it somehow blend in? Any ideas or maybe a style reconsideration is welcome, thank you.

• Apps won't start after vanilla reboot

  I had Adobe and Norton nagging me to reboot, so I did that -- clicked Reboot from the Start button. Everything seemed pretty normal as it shut down and came back up, but once up a bunch of apps won't start. The first one I noticed was Firefox. It would flash the disk light normally, but never appear on the screen. Then I tried to bring up an OpenOffice Calc window and same thing. I tried to bring up MS Word, and the splash screen appeared, but never the main screen, and the splash screen just sat there, with a swirly over it. But I tried Solitaire, Notepad++, Paint, and several others, and they popped up just fine. And I'm typing this from IE 8, which, if anything, came up faster than usual. When I try to open up "Network and Sharing Center" the window appears, but nothing appears in it, and eventually it's tagged "not responding". When I kill that window I get (after a delay) "Windows Explorer is not responding", and when I say "OK" the screen resets. I tried rebooting again, and no joy -- same as before. Have done nothing particularly strange on this box, and it's not generally at significant risk for malware. I haven't installed anything new other than the afore-mentioned updates. One other thing: Several minutes after rebooting I get the message "Error: Unable to start Bluetooth Stack Service." The Bluetooth radio is turned on, and I rarely have anything Bluetooth attached, and I don't recall that I've ever seen this message before. Added: Looking at Event Viewer, I'm getting a lot of "The description for Event ID 1 from source xxx cannot be found." Is there any significance to this? Added: I'm looking at restoring from backup, but the procedure is, at best, unclear. Is it sufficient to restore from "Backup and Restore Center", or must I restore from the restore DVD first?

• Windows 7 doesn't start anymore

  I've experienced some BSOD on windows 7 RC, and some freezing when startup, but today was big surprise, it doesn't start anymore. I tried to start on safe mode and no results too, it shows the starting animation, then a blue screen for less than a second and turns off immediately. The only thing I remember did today is update flash player under Firefox, then chrome stopped working even after logging off, and once restarting, it doesn't start anymore. Anyone experienced the same issue? any hints? [EDIT 3] Solved : Windows 7 have a very smart repair strategy, it works automatically, and it tried every possible fix, what fixed my problem was the system restore to a previous date, all this happened automatically.   With Ubuntu 12.04 and wine 1.4 unlike ubuntu 11.04 with wine 1.2.2 installed application start menu links are missing. For instance with Ubuntu 11.04 including Wine I can install one of our Windows applications and then can go to Applications Wine Programs Semantic Designs TestCoverage Documentation to bring up the documentation for how to run our tool. Unfortunately with Ubuntu 12.04 the Applications menu is gone and going to Dash I do see "Recent Apps and more apps" but my installed Wine application and related documentation link is shown present, even though the wine uninstaller shows in present. I found this online suggestion and tried using the gnome "main menu"... Windows key to launch the Dash. Enter "Main Menu" in the search field and open the old Edit Main Menu app. Select the Category (aka Unity Dash Filter) you want the item in. Name the Dash/Launcher Item Add the Command to launch said app With "mainmenu" then get down to the TestCoverage Documentation and I could see a command link in properties of .. env WINEPREFIX="/home/sdtest/.wine" wine C:\windows\command\start.exe /Unix /home/sdtest/.wine/dosdevices/c:/users/sdtest/Start\ Menu/Programs/Semantic\ Designs/Test\ Coverage/Java\ 1.7\ Documentation.lnk BUT I could not execute this link to view the installed documentation. So I copied the link properties into a file, set it as executable, and ran it as a bash script and the documentation came up! So why can't I use this link under main menu?

• Image-free, custom-styled search bar

  I'm working with the designer and he sent me the following design for the search bar on our webpage: I'm very much against using images in webpage design unless completely necessary, so I'm hoping that I can recreate the whole search bar widget in CSS. I know how to do border-radius, gradients, box-shadows, etc, so that's not a problem. Question: Assuming CSS3 browser compatibility, how can I go about recreating the actual search button (the magnifying glass portion) with the double curved edge, and the slight drop shadow on the bottom left? Thoughts: My initial feeling was that the search button would be circular and free-standing, then overlap the search input div with a negative left-margin, but then I was unsure how I would get that drop shadow. Edit: I'm not completely opposed to using an image for the magnifying glass, but I've seen a similar icon created in CSS before. Would an image vs. pure CSS end up loading at the same speed, or should I do all I can do in pure CSS?

  When we open a window using: window.open("/calendar",'calendar','width=950,height=576,titlebar=no,statusbar=no,menubar=no,resizable=no,scrollbars=no'); Firefox 3 and IE 7 open it to have a content area height of 576 plus the browser items (URL bar, status bar, etc). Chrome however opens it to have a total height of 576 meaning a scrollbar appears to the right of the content (and then the bottom because the width is now reduced). How can I get around this? It's for a heavy layout part of a web app so it's not just a matter of "let the user scroll", the client doesn't want that. Has anyone come across this? I don't mind browser sniffing and opening the window bigger, but I know that's yucky these days.

• VMWare server: virtual machine start-up reaches 95% and hangs

  This problem cropped up today, after updating my eVGA motherboard's chipset in order to try and fix an unrelated issue. After installing the chipset update (contained SATA and Ethernet drivers), every time I've tried to start my Ubuntu VM, it reaches 95% in the web interface and then just hangs. I'm using VMWare Server 2.0.2, running it within Windows 7 64-bit. I haven't had any issues up until now, and I suspect it has something to do with the chipset update. I've already tried reinstalling VMWare itself, removing the VM from the inventory and re-adding it, and neither has proved successful. I'm also not sure how to kill the VMware server process itself once the start-up hangs; I've only been able to try again by rebooting (as none of the VMWare Services listed kill the server process itself). Any insights? Edit: Uhhh...as an addendum: I have a cron job set up on my Ubuntu VM that runs every 20 minutes. The VM is still listed in the VMWare web interface as at 95% of startup, and the start/stop buttons are still disabled, but the cronjob just ran. I also tested SSH, and I was able to tunnel into the Ubuntu VM as well. Now I'm really confused. Edit #2: I just started a thread on the VMWare Server support forums on this same topic. Hopefully between the two communities, we can come up with an answer: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/251033 Edit #3: In lieu of a specific fix, I've switched over to VirtualBox, and all is working just fine.

• Centos 7. Freeradius fails to start on boot

  I was messing around with FreeRADIUS and MySQL (MariaDB) and it seems FreeRADIUS service can't start properly on startup. But it starts fine using root user or in debug mode (radiusd -X) and works just fine! And it spits out the same problem as in the radius.log. I tried disabling iptables and firewalld and rebooting, but no luck: systemctl disable iptables systemctl disable firewalld So maybe the problem is in the process startup order or delay of some kind. Maybe FreeRADIUS's SQL module can't connect to not yet started MariaDB? If it, how can I fix this? In earlier versions of RHEL/CENTOS I know you easily see service start order in like rc.d or stuff, now IDK. I am new to this fancy "systemd", "systemctl", "firewalld" stuff Centos 7 introduced so sorry I'm a little bit confused. Also this new FreeRADIUS 3 structure... PS. • Race condition during thread start?

  Hi, I'm running the following code to start my threads, but they don't start as intended. For some reason, some of the threads start with the same objects (and some don't even start). If I try to debug, they start just fine (extra delay added by me clicking F10 to step through the code). • Solaris MySQL Unable to start successfully

  Environment: Solaris 10 This mysql server has been up and running for 6 months now. Today all of a sudden it crashed. When typing 'mysql' as user it gives the error MYSQL" Error 2002 (HY000): Can't Connect to Local MySQL server though socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' when typing mysql as root it says mysql: not found. The server try to open mysql, it stays open for 9-10 seconds and restarts the process. Below are the application logs. • CellTable + AsyncListViewAdapter<T> + SimplePager<T>, stuck with 'loading' bar when paging

  Hi I'm trying to make CellTable, AsyncListViewAdapter<T> and SimplePager<T> working together. I managed to display my data, but whenever I click either "go to start" or "go to end" button I get that 'loading' indicator which stays there till the end of days. (And AsyncListViewAdapter<T>.onRangeChanged doesn't even get called this time.) I went through the code-snippets in this thread, but I can't see nothing suspicions in what I've been doing. Is there some obvious answer to a rookie mistake? • Passing custom info to mongrel_rails start

  One thing I really don't understand is how I can pass custom start-up options to a mongrel instance. I see that a common approach is the use environment variables, but in my environment this is not going to work because my rails application serves many different clients. Much code is shared between clients, but there are also many differences which I implement by subclassing controllers and views to overload or extend existing features or introduce new ones. To make this all work, I simply add the paths to client specific modules the module load path ($:). In order to start the application for a particular client, I could now use an environment variable like say, TARGET=AMAZONE. Unfortunately, on some systems I'm running multiple mongrel clusters, each cluster serving a different client. Some of these systems run under Windows and to start mongrel I installed mongrel_services. Clearly, this makes my environment variable unsuitable. Passing this extra bit of data to the application is proving to be a real challenge. For a start, mongrel_rails service_install will reject any [custom] command line parameters that aren't documented. I'm not too concerned as installing the services using the install program is trivial. However, even if I manage to install mongrel_services such that when run it passes the custom command line option --target to mongrel_rails start, I get an error because mongrel_rails doesn't recognize the switch. So here were the things I looked at: Pass an extra parameter: mongrel_rails start --target XYZ ... use a config file and add target:XYZ, then do: mongrel_rails start -C x:\myapp\myconfig.yml modify the file: Ruby\lib\ruby\gems\1.8\gems\mongrel-1.1.5-x86-mswin32-60\lib\mongrel\command.rb Perhaps I can use the --script option, but all docs that I found on it were for Unix 1 and 2 simply don't work. I played with 4 but never managed it to do anything. So I had no choice but to go with 3. While it is relatively simple, I hate changing ruby library code. Particularly disappointing is that 2 doesn't work. I mean what is so unreasonable about adding other [custom] options in the config file? Actually I think this is a fundamental piece that is missing in rails. Somehow, the application should be able to register and access command line arguments it expects. If anybody has a good idea how to do this more elegantly using the current infrastructure, I have a chocolate fish to give away!!!

• Hide Hashtags from the user's address bar

  Does anyone know an easy way to hide hashtags in the user's address bar? I am using a image gallery plugin and the only way to control the start position is to use a hash tag. The problem is the hash tag gives away the relative path of the images folder and it looks bad. Without the hash tag it only loads thumbs and not start image so really it's unavoidable. Thanks!
