  • In Ubuntu, MoBlock makes it take a while to actually start using internet

    When connecting to wireless internet in Ubuntu (tested with two different networks), I connect nearly instantly. However, to actually load a page, I need to wait a few minutes, at which point I can actually use a web browser or Pidgin. Until then, various applications try to connect until they time out. I've discovered that, if instead of waiting a few minutes, I open Terminal and run sudo /etc/init.d/blockcontrol stop, everything suddenly is able to load. I can then start MoBlock again with no ill effects. Why is this happening? What is it that would cause MoBlock to take a few minutes to start letting traffic in, but only when started on bootup?     I installed NetBeans 6.8 and tried to run the GlasshFish V3 server. I'm working under Windows Vista 32 Bits. First, it won't run. However, the logs posted by those people indicate that the descriptor file was correctly read by Tomcat and their problem was with the WAR file itself. I'm assuming this is some kind of syntax error with the idp.xml, but cannot determine what it might be. Also - setting the Tomcat logging level to FINEST does not provide any additional information in the logs for this error.

  • Nagios Woudn't Start, now won't Stop!

    I ran an update on a CentOS server running Nagios, after the update, Nagios failed to start. The error in the logs was: Failed to obtain lock on file /var/run/nagios.pid: Permission denied So, I checked and there was no pid file for Nagios in /var/run. I created one and gave it the following permissions: -rwxr--r-- 1 nagios nagios 6 May 31 11:58 nagios.pid Nagios then started and seems to be running normally. The only problem is, it refuses to stop now, so I can't re-start it to add new servers and services to be monitored! When I issue the command "service nagios stop", I get [FAILED], but nothing at all gets outputted to the log, and the service remains up. Any ideas on how I can get the service to stop now? I'm running the RPM version which was installed via yum from the RPMForge repositories. The server is CenotOS 5.5.

    I installed Tomcat on my Windows XP PC. But I can't get it to start. I start the service and I see the progress bar, but it fails. I installed the Java Runtime Environment Version 6 and created JRE_HOME Environment variable. (C:\Program Files\Java\jre6) Any ideas? Thanks. Can someone point me in the right direction ? I've read the documentation , as it is, and it seems kind of sparse for a SysV init replacement... but whatever just need to add this job to the list, run it, and get on with what's left of my life... To run kippo, I do: su kippo ~/kippo/start.sh The contents of start.sh is simply: #!/bin/sh echo -n "Starting kippo in background..." authbind --deep twistd -y kippo.tac -l log/kippo.log --pidfile kippo.pid Which starts up a background process for kippo. What can I do to make this automatically run on startup? Do I need to add a script that calls this in /etc/init.d?

  • Open Windows Server 2012/Windows 8 Start Menu

    I realize that Windows Server 2012 (and Windows 8) removed the start menu button and replaced it with moving your mouse to the upper right corner of the screen. This works fine when the desktop is full screen. However, I access all my servers through windowed RDP connections (or through the Hyper-V console window) and in this case, the desktop is not full screen. Therefore, in order to open the new "start" menu, I have to slowly move my mouse very carefully within the window to just a few pixels within top right corner of the window in order to open the menu. Also, because the session is windowed, the default hot keys (Windows + D, etc.) won't work. There has got to be an easier way. Has anyone else experienced this frustration?

    Suppose I am visiting a page in Firefox and decide to go somewhere else and type the new URL manually into the address field, but the page fails to load, either because it times out, or because I hit Escape. Then Firefox removes my laboriously entered URL and replaces it with the URL of the current page. This is outrageous! I am pretty sure Firefox has changed this behavior lately, because this was one of the reasons I chose Firefox over IE back in the day. How can I turn off this annoying behavior?   • Excel graph: turn stacked bar chart into part bullet chart

    I've a simple data file that has one column of actuals and another of target against categories. I would like to turn the TARGET figure into a 'Bullet marker'. I've seen it done on other graphs but I'm struggling with the category column being overwritten with the xy axis values. Or if I get close to doing it then the xy markers are not central. I've checked out Peltier but his examples are based on even more comlicated data than mine, so the steps required didn't seem to match up. Help greatly appreciated. Thanks Mike.   • OpenVPN Setup - Service Won't Start

    I'm in the process of setting up OpenVPN on a VPS running Debian 6. I've walked step-by-step through this guide twice now, and I can't get the service to start. When I start the service, the error reported in the log file is: Cannot ioctl TUNSETIFF tun: Inappropriate ioctl for device (errno=25) I've searched the web a few times and I'm not finding anything helpful. I've tried: Changing file permissions: no change Deleting the file: get an error stating no file found (errno=2) Making a folder named "tun": get an error stating no file found (errno=2) I've wiped my installation and completed the steps verbatim twice now. I get no errors along the way, just the error above within my log file. The contents of my server.conf file are listed below, minus all the comments for brevity.     When i start wuala on the linux commandline like this, it logs me in and the folder is mounted: wualamcd login username password enableAutoLogin I can shut it down from another console typing wuala shutdown But how do I actually use the auto login that I just set using the enableAutoLogin switch? What is the command to start it again, so it logs in but does not need the password? I tried wualamcd login and wuala starts but no one gets logged in. Auto login in gui mode works fine. This is 32 bit linux with openjdk 6 JRE.

  • supervisord failed to start nagiosapi after reboot, need to run reload manually

    I have supervisord to start nagiosapi everytime the server starts. The API created a status dump file called status.dat, which will get updated periodically. The following is the conf file that starts the api. [program:nagapi] directory = /home/nagapi user = api command = /bin/bash -c "source /home/nagapi/.virtualenvs/nagapi/bin/activate; /home/nagapi/nagios-api/nagios-api" stdout_logfile = /home/nagapi/supervisor_nagios-api_stdout.log stderr_logfile = /home/nagapi/supervisor_nagios-api_stderr.log Everytime i restart the server, supervisord cannot start the api. stderr.log claims that it cannot find the status.dat file located in /var/cache/nagios3. It seems like the files was not created yet when supervisor tried to run the api the first time. I'm saying this because if i do a supervisorctl reload, everything would reload just fine, and the api would run ok about 50 seconds after the reload command completes. should i change the command option of the conf file to check for

  • Firefox, Thunderbird, Safari - hangs up on start

    I have a strange problem on Windows Vista (Automatic updates). Long time ago I had installed Firefox, Thunderbird, Safari and Opera and they all worked well. Once upon a time, after Windows restart, Firefox, Thunderbird and Safari won't start. [Opera (USB) works fine]. When I start the browser, program name is listed on the processes list, but it is not activated, doesn't show any window. I tried crating new profiles with -ProfileManager, restarting Windows, reinstalling the browsers. I scanned the system for suspected programs and it looks clean. There is 45GB of free HDD space. WTF?

    I'm running CentOS 5.8 and I had to change my server's IP address. Afterwards, I'm unable start Apache. I am also running virtualmin. The error I'm receiving is: Failed to start service Starting httpd: httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 184.106.146.125 for ServerName (99) Cannot assign requested address: make_sock: could not bind to address 50.56.33.100:8080 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs I edited my httpd.conf to point to the new IP address like such: #Listen 12.34.56.78:80 Listen 184.106.146.125:80 And looking at the error it still seems to be referring to the old ip address (50.*).

Something that bothers me is that when I was downloading the Intel Rapid Start driver (I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y480, and it comes standard with the Rapid Start) and tried to install it, the installer claimed that my system did not meet the requirements in order to install, when it was previously installed by the OEM. My startup times have increased from 21 seconds to log-in screen to 50 seconds. Please help... Now i plan to migrate to unmanaged VPS, so i need some guides, tips on how and where to start learning.
