• Learning Programming, Suggestions for a roadmap

  Hi, Some background first- I am new to programming and have discovered it rather late in life; Like many hobbyists, my introduction to the subject has been through php/jquery (yes, i know the popular mood around here... they-are-not-real-programminng-languages ;-) ). I like to believe that I am reasonably competent at what I do in my other life and this developing addiction to coding has taken a very heavy toll on my professional prospects. This is the question: What programming languages next? (No plans to ditch php in the immediate future, that will involve rewriting much of my code) Any absolutely essential books I must read? Is it necessary to join a college/university course? Do I need to ditch my other profession to continue serious learning? My goals are: Develop a solid understanding of the science and art of programming. How would you classify programming skill in four or five levels from complete beginner to god-like? For sake of argument, let us consider C++. • Is programming for me?

  I have an IT background and was pretty confident until an opportunity came up at work to go into programming(C#). I have never programmed before this. Plus the software I am programming for is a program I have never used before(a 3D modeling software). It has been 6 months..I feel like giving up. Not much training...about 3 weeks of training spread out over the last 6 months. I think I would be good at programming but this experience has kinda making me rethink my decision. • I.T. degree for game programming?

  Hi, I am a 19 year old who has always been interested in video & computer games. I developed the interested for game programming about three months ago and started researching on the profession. The only degrees always suggested on the internet and in books are those of computer science, physics, mathematics, & game development. BSc Information Technology has been my major for the past two years; and even though my university teaches we the I.T. students computer programming (in c++, c#, java) and offers us the opportunity to undertake some computer science courses of our choice in addition to the regular I.T. courses, I am feeling insecure about my prospects in getting into the profession. My question is: Will a game development company hire me if I exhibit good math, physics and game programming skills with an I.T. degree? If NO, will I have to obtain an MSc in a much more related course.

  I've just started a programming job where I'm applying my 'How to code' knowledge to what I'm being taught of 'How to Program' (They are different!). As well of this I'm taught how to capture requirements from clients, so as to start a new project. How do I do this for a nebulous personal project? I say nebulous, as I often find halfway through programming something, I want to expand what my program will do, or alter the result. Eventually I'm tangled in code, and have to restart. This can be frustrating and off putting. Conversely when given a fixed task, and fixed requirements, it's much easier to programme from a - b. So how do I plan a personal programming project?

  I am bit confusing about my goals although whole motivation thing is $$$ but still there is something pushing me to pursue higher studies(being frustrated from boot-licking attitudes of peers and lottery system here in India for promotions,pay hikes and onshore opportunities). I am afraid I do not have any goals.I am software developer mainly in JAVA, but an ECE graduate.I want to work in programming languages. My problem is that I am not even Jack of all trades.I have experience in programming and thats where I am good(self-pro-claimed or atleast people say this treating them as a critics). I have decided to go with the wind and applying for programming languages as my specialization.But I know how to code,write test cases,how Perosnal and commercial IT insurances solution works.What I do not know is how to show that what I will do during my masters.I have no idea about what to showcase, how would my work ex will help me. totally oblivious thoughts... thanks waiting for replies....

  I decided to learn programming. I've been reading SO for few days, and I think I will start with C++, as I read some articles. I am aware of loops, arrays, program logic and objects a little and I need someone to look me over and help me with small questions I get when doing my first projects. • Task Scheduler Cannot Apply My Changes - Adding a User with Permissions

  I can log in to the server using a domain account without administrator privileges and create a task in the Task Scheduler. I am allowed to do an initial save of the task but unable to modify it with the same user account. When changes are complete, a message box prompts for the user password (same domain user I logged in with), then fails with the following message. Task Scheduler cannot apply your changes. The user account is unknown, the password is incorrect, or the account does not have permission to modify the task. When I check Log on as Batch Job Properties (found this from the Help documentation): This policy is accessible by opening the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and then Local Security Policy. In the Local Security Policy window, click Local Policy, User Rights Assignment, and then Logon as batch job. Everything is grayed out, so I can't add a user. How can I add a user?

• Scheduled task giving last run result 0x80041324

  I've got a scheduled task set up in my Windows 7 machine which is meant to run a BAT file when I'm not around, i.e. the machine has been idle for 15 minutes. Does anyone know how to track down the cause of the error code ? Checked on MSDN and it says ... SCHED_E_TASK_ATTEMPTED 0x80041324 The Task Scheduler service attempted to run the task, but the task did not run due to one of the constraints in the task definition. And to confuse me even further, I've just noticed it has run while I'm at the machine with last result (0x0)

  I had some jobs to be moved from the old production server (windows 2003 server standard) to the new machine (windows 2008 server standard), but the new server is unable to read the old .job format, also the import wizard only imports from .xml job files (same version). Obviously I don't want to rebuild all the jobs by hand, but can't find a tool that makes the process a very little easier. I don't trust in Microsoft for this kind of tools, my previously experiences had been to bad (DTS - SSIS). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Root cause for high CPU usage; which measurement to trust more: Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer?

  Consider this Windows 8.1 machine (in-place upgrade from Windows 8) with differing reports on its CPU usage. The machine is idle, and has been for 3 days. There are no CPU intensive tasks running currently nor over the 3 day idle period. Windows Task Manager is reporting CPU usage constantly at an incredibly high value (and increasing over time!) at around 75%. Process Explorer from SysInternals reports that the CPU usage is much different at around 42% How does Process Explorer report 42.14% usage, but its columns report Idle at 57%, with the sum of the other processes not even approaching 10%? Which of these two values should I trust more, and why should it be trusted over the other measurement? How can I actually determine which process is causing Task Manager to report its values? • How to start a task before networking?

  I've written an upstart task that modifies /etc/network/interfaces. (Actually a file sourced into it.) Which start on condition do I need to declare to let my task run before any networking jobs? I've tried start on starting networking, but that's apparently too late. When I log in after booting I can see that the changes were written, but obviously they are not used: the new config states a static IP, but the boot process waits for a non-existing DHCP server (old config) to time out. I've also tried start on starting network-interface INTERFACE=eth0, which didn't work either. IIRC there was an error in the log that the change couldn't be written. Background: I need a VM template that can be cloned and the clones configured through a script. Among other settings, I need to give them a static IP address to access them from the host. I use guestfish to write a config file to one of the virtual disks and let a script apply these settings to the system. I don't want that disk to contain an actual system settings file. I can't modify /etc directly, because that disk is shared (copy-on-write/diff) among the clones and guestfish apparently doesn't support that type of image. I could also let them use DHCP and setup a server that assigns IP by MAC, but I'm afraid of the complexity. I could also add just another virtual disk for configuration files, but if possible I'd prefer to store settings directly on the system disk image. Used software: Ubuntu Server 12.04, VirtualBox. The configuration modifier is a self written ruby script.

• Double entries in the gnome 3 task bar

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3. All was working well except that graphics were slow and even moving a window on the screen seemed slow. I installed the fglrx ati driver. Which seems to have improved matters. But on first login I had all gnome items duplicated. That is my task bar has the ubuntu sign, then says Applications, then places then the ubuntu sign then Aplications and then places. Any application I run produces two icons at the bottom of the screen. This was after a reboot. I rebooted again. Now I have 3!! On the right each set of icons such as printer is also trippled!!   My project manager assigned me a task to estimate the development time for an iPad application. Lets assume that I gave estimation of 15 working days. He thought that the number of days where too many and client needed the changes to the application urgently (as in most of cases). So, he told me: "I am going to assign two developer including you and as per my understandings and experience it won't take more than seven working days." Clarifications I was given the task of estimating development time for an individual. How could I be sure that 2 developers are going to finish it within 7 days? (I am new to team & I hardly know the others abilities) Questions Why do most of project managers / team leaders have understandings like: If one developer requires N days, Then two developers would require N/2 days, Do they think something like developer = s/w production machines? Should a team member (developer, not team lead or any higher post) estimate other developers work? I didn't deny anything in the meeting and didn't said, but what should be the appropriate answer to convince them that N/2 formula that they follow is not correct?

  Download Source Code I've received many questions about when the source code for the Task-It application will be released. Well, the time has finally come. I haven't been able to release this sooner due to the flurry of releases that have been coming out lately. Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services, and even our Q1 Rad Controls. Each time I got the latest bits I ran into issues (either bugs or visual issues) in the Task-It that needed to be fixed. Having said that, the app is far from perfect. There are still some bugs lurking and things that need to be fixed up visually (especially the RadGridView filtering popup), but the main purpose of this app is to show the RadControls for Silverlight 4 in the context of a real-world application, and I don't want to keep delaying the release of the source code. I have since been asked if I could post the source code for this demo, so here it is (I am using similar techniques in my Task-It application). The database Before running the code for this app you will need to create the database. First, create a database called MVVMProject in SQL Server, then run MVVMProject.sql in the MVVMProjectDemo/Database directory of your downloaded .zip file. • Specification, modeling and programming are principially the same, right?

  In formal specifications based on abstract algebraic types and equational theory you use formulas of equational theory to specify theory. System which will satisfy those constraints is called in formal logic a model. Modeling is process of creating a model, which abstracts of some aspects, which are unnecessary details for a specific case. So concrete system has to adhere to created model in observed aspects. Programming is a process of creating a program which will have specific behaviour - will perform specific algorithms - and programming languages through different paradigms enable us to think in a certain specific way, which abstracts of some details, usually machine specific ones. So could we be doing all those things at the same time, because they are principially the same? Is declarative programming the nearest attempt to do that? Could we use some sort f programming languages which will be good for programming as well as for modeling and specification?

• AIR: sync gui with data-base?

  I am going to be building an AIR application that shows a list (about 1-25 rows of data) from a data-base. The data-base is on the web. I want the list to be as accurate as possible, meaning as soon as the data-base data changes, the list displayed in the app should update asap. I do not know of anyway that the air application could be notified when there is a change, I am thinking I am going to have to poll the data-base at certain intervals to keep an up to date list. So my question is, first is there any way to NOT have to keep checking the data-base? or if I do keep have to keep checking the data-base what is a reasonable interval to do that at? Thanks.
