In TCP/IP terms, how does a download speed limiter in an office work?

Assume an office of people, they want to limit HTTP downloads to a max of 40% bandwidth of their internet connection speed so that it doesn't block other traffic. We say "it's not supported in your firewall", and they say the inevitable line "we used to be able to do it with our Netgear/DLink/DrayTek". Thinking about it, a download is like this: HTTP GET request Server sends file data as TCP packets Client acknowledges receipt of TCP packets Repeat until download finished. The speed is determined by how fast the server sends data to you, and how fast you acknowledge it. So, to limit download speed, you have two choices: 1) Instruct the server to send data to you more slowly - and I don't think there's any protocol feature to request that in TCP or HTTP. 2) Acknowledge packets more slowly by limiting your upload speed, and also ruin your upload speed. How do devices do this limiting? Is there a standard way?

Can I increase the link speed of the RAS Server on our MS Win2k3 box?

We are running a Win2K3 Server box, and I'm a remote employee that connects via VPN. I've been frustrated for some time by the connection speed over the VPN (the office HQ has a decent speed and I have a biz class connection here), and decided to do some checking today. This morning, I was dialed in and looked at the networking tab of the task manager, and I see that the adapter for the RAS Server (the box has 4 Gigabit adapters) has a speed that seems far too low. The speed for the RAS Server link hovers between 300 - 600 Kbps. The local connection (and others) all say 1 Gbps. Can I set this to a higher speed? Is this information accurate? Wireless Network Performance Issues

My brand new Dell XPS system has been running flawlessly except its abysmal download speeds. I have tried isolating every variable I could possibly think of but I can't figure out the problem. I've talked to Dell and Belkin without making progress (thought I'd try). Here are the speeds: Note that most of the time, upload speeds are actually much faster than download speeds (around 4.0 Mb/s which is better than most other devices on the network) It's not the ISP. The slowdown happens even when transferring files inside the network. Plus every other wireless device gets approximately this: It's not the wireless router. It's a Lynksis WRT160N v1 with the latest firmware (1.02.2). Plus everything else connected to it has normal speeds. It's not the browser. Speeds are the same in IE, FF, and when transferring files with Windows between computers. It's not the wireless adapter. I've tried a Belkin N Wireless USB Adapter (which works fine on another computer) and a Dell Wireless Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card. They have the same slow speeds when connected to the problem computer. It's not the adapter connection. One adapter used USB and the other is a Mini-Card. It's not antenna placement. With the same antenna position and the same device, I get different speeds when connected to the problem computer vs a good computer. Plus everything reports the connection speed as at least 11Mbps and good signal strength. I've tried disabling IPv6 since it sometimes causes weird problems. I've tried disabling Windows Firewall/anti-virus. I've ensured the computer has updated drivers for both adapters. I've ensured that Windows is up to date and so is the BIOS. For the USB adapter I ensured that that USB port functioned at normal speeds with other USB devices. What else could it possibly be? I finally received my copy of Windows 7 and will be trying that. I'd rather not install Windows 7 because of a particular program that will stop working so a solution besides that is welcome. Specs: Vista x64 Core i7 920 6GB RAM 500GB HD GTX 260

After much fiddling, I've managed to install the right ODBC driver and have successfully created a linked server on SQL Server 2008, by which I can access my PostgreSQL db from SQL server. Now I am developing a firefox extension, can I define a global array in a js with the main xul . and I found when I use it in another js with another xul , it could not worked , so I searched the document of Firefox development. I found a common array can not be transfered between two js files with different xul files. and then I difined a xpcom mutablearray in a js: var eleList = Components.classes["@mozilla.org/array;1"] .createInstance(Components.interfaces.nsIMutableArray); but when I want to use it in another js : it still not work , why? using pscp.exe for sftp transfer is very slow compared to filezilla

I have a weird problem. I'm using pscp.exe from within a C# program (with process.start) to upload files to an SFTP server. Now I have set up a new server with the same program, where I upload to the same SFTP server as before, but It runs incredibly slow in the new server. The weird thing is that when I try uploading the files manually via FileZilla, the upload goes as fast as expected, but not when using the program. Can anyone explain this? Am I missing something obvious like a windows setting or something?

Data Transfer Objects VS Domain/ActiveRecord Entities in the View in RoR

I'm coming from a .NET background, where it is a practice to not bind domain/entity models directly to the view in not-so-basic CRUD-ish applications where the view does not directly project entity fields as-is. I'm wondering what's the practice in RoR, where the default persistence mechanism is ActiveRecord. I would assert that presentation-related info should not be leaked to the entities, not sure though if this is how real RoR heads would do it. If DTOs/model per view is the approach, how will you do it in Rails? Your thoughts? EDIT: Some examples: - A view shows a list of invoices, with the number of unique items in one column. - A list of credit card accounts, where possibly fraudulent transactions were executed. For that, the UI needs to show this row in red. For both scenarios, The lists don't show all of the fields of the entities, just a few to show in the list (like invoice #, transaction date, name of the account, the amount of the transaction) For the invoice example, The invoice entity doesn't have a field "No. of line items" mapped on it. The database has not been denormalized for perf reasons and it will be computed during query time using aggregate functions. For the credit card accounts example, surely the card transaction entity doesn't have a "Show-in-red" or "IsFraudulent" invariant. Yes it may be a business rule, but for this example, that is a presentation concern, so I would like to keep it out of my domain model.

I know that ASP.NET MVC has error filter attribute to handle specified error type. However, this feature cannot catch any error that occurs when application start. Next, I try to solve this question by setting default redirect in custom errors like the following code. <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="Scripts/ApplicationError.htm"></customErrors> Unfortunately, it does not work because when application receive redirected request, it try to start application again and it throw exception again. How do to solve this problem? Alternatively, Do you have other idea for handling this error. Thanks, PS. The main reason for creating this handler because I want to display error when application cannot connect to other service like database for caching data on application start.

PHP Stop Word List

I'm playing about with a stop words within my code I have an array full of words that I'd like to check, and an array of words I want to check against. At the moment I'm looping through the array one at at a time and removing the word if its in_array vs the stop word list but I wonder if there's a better way of doing it, I've looked at array_diff and such however if I have multiple stop words in the first array, array_diff only appears to remove the first occurrence. The focus is on speed and memory usage but speed more so. Thanks

Now in the middle of the project, I want to switch over to Eclipse as the Netbeans once corrupted my GUI and I had to re-create several parts of the GUI and now it is displaying a compiler error as code too large private void initComponents() { 1 error "code too large" is a strange error. My code which it is saying too large is just 10,000 lines long. Import OLE Object from Access to MySQL

I have a table in an access table which contains Product entries, one of the columns has a jpg image stored as an OLE Object. I am trying to import this table to MySQL but nothing seems to work. I have tried the MySQL migration tool but that has a known issue with Access and OLE Objects. (The issue being it doesnt work and leaves the fields blank) I also tried the suggestion on this site and while the data is imported it seems as though the image is getting corrupted in the transfer. When i try to preview the image i just get a binary view, if i save it on disk as a jpg image and try to open it i get an error stating the image is corrupt. The images in Access are fine and can be previewed. Access is storing the data as an OLE Object and when i import it to MySql it is saved in a MediumBlob field. Has anyone had this issue before and how did they resolve it ?

Windows Disk I/O Analysis

It appears that we are having a problem with the disk i/o speed on our Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server (64-bit). As we were initializing a database that created two 1G tablespaces on 3 different machines, it became obvious that the two smaller machines (each 32-bit Windows 2003 Standard Edition with less RAM) killed the larger machine when creating the files. The larger machine took 10x as long to create the tablespaces than did the other machines. Now, I am left wondering how that could be. What programs or scripts would you guys recommend for tracking down the I/O problem? I think the issue may be with the controller card (all boxes are hardware RAID 10, but have different controller cards), but I would like to check the actual disk I/O speed as well, so I have some hard numbers to work with. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, I'm testing some concepts in ASP.NET MVC multisteps (Style Wizards) with a small application which allow me to records organizations in a database. To make things easier, I've a class OrganizationFormModelView that contains an object of class Organization and a property called ParentOrgList of SelectList type. The only purpose of the selectList property is to be used by a DropDownList. I've also serialize OrganizationFormModelView to get the multisteps Wizard effect. In my first view (or first step), I use a dropdownlist helper to assign a value to one of the the Organization's property called ParentOrganization, which draws data from the ParentOrgList. ... <% = Html.DropDownList("Organization.ParentOrganization", Model.ParentOrgList)%> ... The first time the page loads, I'm able to make a choice. And, my choice is reflected in my object Model all along the wizard' steps(see Visual studio in debugging mode). But, when any time I'm redirected back to the first view (first step), I get the following error message: "The ViewData item with the key 'Organization.ParentOrganization' is of type 'System.String' but needs to be of type 'IEnumerable'."
