  • Is there a software that can index the contents of the registry for quick lookups?

    Searching in the Windows registry can be ve------ry------ lo----ng. Is there some tool available that can index the contents of the whole registry, or contents of a single hive, such that fast lookups are available? (for example generating some SQLite database with FTS3 or FTS4 enabled for full text search) Thank you. PS. I don't want RegScanner or tools that perform a new, linear search every time. I want an indexer, with which then a search can be instantaneous. See question comments.

  • Why Can't I Pre-Zip Server Files?

    It's just good common sense to have your server gzip your files before they send them to users (I use Nginx) Is there anyway to save the server some overhead and pre-zip those files for the server, and if not why? For instance rather than giving the server an myscript.js and having the server zip the file and send it to the user, is there a way to create myscript.js.zip so the server doesn't have to?

  • why is drop box syncing so freakishly slowly in my linux virtual machine?

    i am setting up a linux virtual machine (windows 7 64 bit host, ubuntu 64 bit guest, using virtual box) and i just installed drop box and set it to sync. I've only got about 2Gb in there so i figured it should take just an afternoon, but it's going at about 0.5 kB/second and says it will take about 60 days. I usually get about 200 kB/second in the host OS, and downloading straight from the dropbox website through firefox in the ubuntu VM i get about that, but sync is really slow. any tips?

  • Reducing Loading of Advertisers Scripts

    I have a website (http://dev2.liquor.com) that loads very quickly when I remove the advertisers and tracking scripts our partners give us. Of course we need to reduce page load time from 6 seconds to 1 second, and I see that it is 100% all of our external js files for partner tracking, ads, etc. I have been banging my head against the wall trying to find alternate ways to load/compress/serve the multidue of js the user needs to download. I can easily compress/minify mine, but someone else's that is not on our server is becoming hard to do so. The best I can do is get a C on YSlow, and each suggestion they give me pertains to my stupid tracking js scripts! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Slow upload, fast download on Windows 7 64bit system

    I've got a weird problem in the download speeds on my desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) are consistently fast (approx. 400kB/s) but uploads are very slow (around 6-10kB/s). This has been going on for the last 3 weeks or so. I am a very competent user and troubleshooter, and have searched online for 2 weeks for a solution, to no avail. Part of the problem is that internet is provided by WiFi by my landlord and I have no access to the router (BT Home Hub router) although I know for sure he wouldn't have the first idea on how to restrict my usage :) (rules that out) Anyway, I've tried: - various drivers (my Wifi 'card' is TP-link TL-WN851N, and I've tried TP-link + Atheros + Qualcomm Atheross drivers, suggested by Microsoft) - various tweaks to network parameters (e.g. as suggested by SpeedOptimser) - various tweaks to Windows 7 services (e.g. disabling/manual-ing unecessary services) - raising and lowering head onto a reasonably firm surface at moderate frequency (jk :D) None of the above have helped, and I'm officialy asking for help now!!     I'm going to be rebuilding my server, and I want much faster access to my data. I've used RAID 1 and 0 in the past, and decided upon RAID 10 (dedicated RAID card). Then someone told me to use RAID 5+0, then someone else told me to use RAID 6+0. Assuming the Hardware RAID Card supports each level, what is currently the FASTEST RAID available, given x number of hard drives? Reliability is now another factor, and I am willing to spend money on new drives if a drive (or multiple) fail. I simply want to know what the fastest RAID level is, along with some reliability for recovering from a failure

  • VOIP and internet connection speeds [cable vs. fiber]

    Our office is migrating to IP telephony. We have less than 10 employees that will be using the phones. We currently have cable internet, and they just bumped the speeds: There is a data center that was just recently built in our building, and we were considering co-lo'ing there in the near future. As a result, they offered us access to their triple-redundant internet, but it's quite expensive. They are offering 3mbps committed with up to 10mbps burst for $250/month (discounted). We pay ~$120 for our cable (which the plan was to keep--at least for TV). I want the phone system and LAN to be as separate as possible. Was thinking about keeping the cable for LAN, and using the other connection for the phones (until I saw the price). Now I'm thinking it might make sense to add on to our existing cable setup, and change our phone to only have DSL as a backup for the cable. Is there any real benefit to the fiber? Especially for the price? Any other suggestions or ideas? Thanks.

  • Make the recycle bin of the SSD on a RAID0 drive?

    I don't know about you folks, but I hate the idea of junk sitting on my tiny 30GB SSD. Any way to designate another drive to be the host of the Recycle Bin for items formerly on the SSD? Basically, I need to know how to make a lower-priority drive receive the recycled materials from the 'main' drive, which happens to be short on space. The best thing I can think of is a batch file that a) syncs 'recycle' to another drive; and b) empties the recycle bin. ... but that's too much work for me.

    Hey all, If I have a router that has "mixed mode" enabled to allow b, g, and n devices, it is true that n devices will suffer in reduced bandwidth if there are any non-n devices connected?   • Sharing files between multiple computers?

    At my school, we have 13 iMacs that we use to make our yearbook. Currently our school has some servers for us, but since we work with so many files ( thousands of pictures, most of which are ~3MB ) it slows down far too much. Is there a way to better share files between our computers? We are on a wireless network and the whole school shares the same servers, we have around probably 400 computers in the school. Is there a hardware fix I can do? Something like buying an external and hooking only yearbook computers to it?

    I've always wondered why the companies who make BIOS' either have terrible engineering psychologists or none at all. But without wasting your time further with random speculative questions, my real question is as follows: Why does my new computer run slower than my old computer? Old Computer: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 3.0 Ghz (stock) 4GB OCZ DDR2 800 RAM Wolfdale E8400 mb nVidia GeForce 8600 GT New Computer: Intel Core i7 920 @ ~3.2 Ghz 6 GB OCZ DDR3 1066 RAM EVGA x58 SLI LE motherboard nVidia GeForce GTX 275 Vista x64 Home Premium on both. "Run slower" is defined as: - poorer FPS performance in the same games, applications - takes longer to start up - general desktop usage (checking email, opening up files, running exe's) is noticeably slower At first I thought I must've not set something up in the BIOS or something. But I have no idea how to set anything in the bios except for "Dummy O.C.", which brought me to ~3.2 Ghz. But beyond that I have no idea. I've been reading stuff about "ram timing" and voltages and the like but I really have no idea about that stuff. I'm a psychologist who has a basic understanding in building his own computers, not a computer scientist. Can someone give me some wisdom that might guide me to the reason my new computer is worse than my older one? I'm sorry if this is a bad question, or not appropriate to SO.     I have 4 reasonably complex r scripts that are used to manipulate csv and xml files. These were created by another department where they work exclusively in r. My understanding is that while r is very fast when dealing with data, it's not really optimised for file manipulation. Can I expect to get significant speed increases by converting these scripts to python? Or is this something of a waste of time?

  • Why would I be getting IXFR and AXFR transfer denied on my DNS server?

    From everything I've researched and tried, it appears that my named.conf is configured correctly, including the allow-transfer section. Here is a sample of the errors. It is only happening with a couple of my secondary servers, but it is happening for every zone for those servers that are failing. One of the servers is attempting IXFR, the other AXFR.
