    There is a issue while connecting from new Windows 8.1 Clients to SQL Server 2008 running on Windows Server 2008 R2. The SQL Service running under account Domain\mssqlservice on a machine thats works fine I get this output from setspn -l domain\mssqlservice C:\>setspn -l domain\mssqlservice Registrierte Dienstprinzipalnamen (SPN) für CN=MSSQLService,CN=Users,DC=domain, DC=local,DC=tld: MSSQLSvc/mssql.domain.local.tld:1433 MSSQLSvc/mssql.domain.local.tld MSSQLSERVER/mssql.domain.local.tld:1433 On a windows 8.1 machine that don't work I get this output: C:\>setspn -l domain\msssqlservice FindDomainForAccount: Fehler beim Aufrufen von DsGetDcNameWithAccountW mit dem R ückgabewert 0x0000054B. Konto kockiren wurde nicht gefunden. On this Post I found a solution but, I can't change the Service Account who runs the SQL Service. Some application need this service delegation. But how I can realize that it works on my Windows 8.1 Clients?

  • SQL Server Installer Closes Silently Without Errors

    When I run the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express installer (32-bit or 64-bit), nothing happens. It will get to the screen where it asks me to accept the terms of license and send anonymous feedback; I check off both boxes and click Next, and it automatically starts installing the Support Files. And then the window disappears. I tried looking through the log files, but didn't see any errors. I've tried: x64 SQL Server R2 express x86 SQL Server R2 express X64 SQL Server R2 (full) X64 SQL Server Management Studio Of these, only management studio installed correctly; the two express editions failed silently, and the full version gave me different errors. I also tried running in Administrator mode (despite being logged in as an administrator user), but again, no difference.

  • Failure to copy files with ownership/ACL information on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine

    I'm attempting to copy a directory tree, maintaining its ownership information using the command: XCOPY S:\ProjectsDefault\Tempalte\admin S:\Projects\00\111\admin /S /E /I /O the command gives an Access denied error message, and while it does create the directory tree, the ownership and ACL information is not copied. This is being done on a Windows 2008 R2 Server which has mounted a share from a Windows 2003 R2 domain controller. The user has been been granted full access to the share and is a member of the Domain Admins security group. Oddly enough, the command does work if performed on a different (Windows 2003 R2 Server). (It also works if done using the Domain Administrator account on the 2008 server.)

    It's unclear to me exactly how secure Remote Desktop access from OSX to a Windows Server 2003 machine is. Is the communication encrypted by default? What level of encryption? Are there best practices for making this as secure as possible? I found http://www.mobydisk.com/techres/securing_remote_desktop.html but it's unclear how much of that is still relevant for current versions of RDP and Windows Server. I know I can tunnel RDP over ssh, but is that overkill or redundant? Thanks...

  • Why does a Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc appear every time I connect to Windows Server 2003 SBS?

    I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?

  • I hyperlinked a cell in excel 2003, formula issues?

    I have a budget spreadsheet using excel 2003. I have My deposit, then all of my bills, the total, then a cell that has the difference(between the amount of deposit and the total of the bills). The difference cell numbers turn red when I dont have enough money (deposit vs bill total). I hyperlinked the difference cell to a checkbook register spreadsheet so I can track where all my extra money went(reconsile receipts daily). When hyperlinked the numbers are blue. I need the numbers to stay black(when above 0.00) and stay red (when the numbers are below 0.00) and not change after the link has been clicked on. Also if the link has not been clicked on, and the numbers are red, the font is smaller, even though the toolbar shows the font size hasnt changed. After I click on it and go back to the budget sheet, its the size it should be. Any Ideas? Thanks!

    I have a macro that copies data from one cell to another and uses a VLOOKUP formula, among other things. My spreadsheet contains nearly 2000 rows. When I run it in Excel 2003, Excel starts to slow down as the macro processes rows 500 and above. It gets even worse when it reaches the 1000th row. It takes more than 5 hours to complete. In Excel 2007, however, the macro runs for only half an hour. Can anyone help me find a good solution?

Depending on how you tried to get it, you either ended up on a blank search page, or a page offering the CTP3 bits. Important note: the CTP3 Juneau bits are not compatible with SQL Server 2012 RC0.   • SQL SERVER – Copy Statistics from One Server to Another Server

    I was recently working on a performance tuning project in Dubai (yeah I was able to see the tallest tower from the window of my work place). I had a very interesting learning experience there. There was a situation where we wanted to receive the schema of original database from a certain client. However, the client was not able to provide us any data due to privacy issues. The schema was very important because without having an access to underlying data, it was a bit difficult to judge the queries etc. For example, without any primary data, all the queries are running in 0 (zero) milliseconds and all were using nested loop as there were no data to be returned. Even though we had CPU offending queries, they were not doing anything without the data in the tables. This was really a challenge as I did not have access to production server data and I could not recreate the scenarios as production without data. Well, I was confused but Ruben from Solid Quality Mentors, Spain taught me new tricks. He suggested that when table schema is generated, we can create the statistics consequently. Here is how we had done that: Once statistics is created along with the schema, without data in the table, all the queries will work as how they will work on production server. This way, without access to the data, we were able to recreate the same scenario as production server on development server. When observed at the script, you will find that the statistics were also generated along with the query. You will find statistics included in WITH STATS_STREAM clause.   • Active Directory FRS problems. 13508 error and other problems

    I have 3 Domain Controllers. We will call them DC1, DC2 and DC3. DC3 and DC2 show Event ID 13508 in their FRS logs with no follow-up event(13509 I think) to say the error had been fixed. DC1's FRS log no matter what you do never shows any events besides FRS service stopped and started. DC1 holds the SYSVOL that needs to be replicated to the other DC's. The other DC's sysvol folders are empty. I have tried the burflag method of fixing this but I haven't had any luck. My procedure for that was to stop all FRS services on all DC's. Then set the burflag on DC1 to D4 and the other two DCs burflag to D2. Started FRS on DC1 and the only event's I see in DC1's FRS event logs are service stopped and service started messages. This fact is leading me to believe that something is wrong on FRS for DC1. I believe there should be events 13553 and 13516 in the FRS event logs after an authoritative sysvol restore. The other two DC's do not have anything in their SYSVOL, otherwise I would have made one of them the authoritative sysvol. DC1 is MS Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 DC2 is MS Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1 DC3 is MS Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2 I did not setup this domain originally but I am now the administrator of it, so I don't have a lot of background on why certain things may have been done in the past. My main goal is to try and fix these issues to get myself better prepared to decommision DC1 and add a DC running Server 2008 to my domain. Thanks.

  • Thoughts on Nexus in SQL Server PDW

    I have been on a SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse (aka PDW) training course this week and was interested to learn that you can't (yet) use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) against PDW, instead they ship a 3rd party tool called Nexus Chameleon. This was a bit of a disappointment at the beginning of the week (I'd prefer parity across SQL Server editions) but actually, having used Nexus for 3 days, I'm rather getting used to it. Some of it is a bit clunky (e.g. everything goes via an ODBC DSN) but once you get into using it its the epitome of "it just works". For example, over the past few years I have come to rely on intellisense in SSMS and have learnt to cope with its nuances. There is no intellisense in Nexus but you know what....I don't really miss it that much. In a sense its a breath of fresh air not having to hope that you've crossed the line into that will it work/won't it work grey area with SSMS intellisense. And I don't end up with writing @@CONNECTIONS instead of FROM anymore (anyone else suffer from this?) :) Moreover, Nexus is a standalone tool. Its not a bunch of features shoehorned into something else (Visual Studio). Another thing I like about Nexus is that you can actually do something with your resultset client-side. Take a look at the screenshots below:   You can see Nexus allows you to group a resultest by a column or set of columns. Nice touch. I know that many people have submitted Connect requests asking for the ability to do similar things in SSMS that would mean we don't have to copy resultsets into Excel (I know I have) - Nexus is a step in that direction. Its refreshing to use a tool that just gets out of the way yet still has some really useful features. How ironic that it gets shipped inside an edition of SQL Server! If I had the option of using Nexus in my day job I suspect that over time I would probably gravitate back to SSMS because as yet I haven’t really stretched Nexus’ capabilities, overall SSMS *does* have more features and up until now I've never really had any objections to it ... but its been an interesting awakening into the nuances that plague SSMS. Anyone else used Nexus? Any thoughts on it? @Jamiet

Why is the option to install Windows 7 SP1 missing from Windows Update? i'm less interested in why the option is missing, and more interested in how to diagnose why the option to install Windows 7 SP1 is being hidden. Following the suggestions in KB2498452 - You do not have the option of downloading Windows 7 SP1 when you use Windows Update to check for updates: Confirm that Windows 7 SP1 is not already installed and that you are not running a prerelease version of Windows 7 SP1 i am not already running SP1, or a pre-release SP1: Check for pending updates Update 976902 may have to be installed on your computer before Windows 7 SP1 will be offered in Windows Update. i already have 976902 installed: Verify that an incompatible version of SafeCentral is not installed on your computer Windows SP1 may not appear in Windows Update if certain versions of SafeCentral are installed on your computer. SafeCentral is a security program that is manufactured by SafeCentral, Inc. i do not have SafeCentral installed (i've never heard of such a thing): Check whether you have Intel integrated graphics driver Igdkmd32.sys or Igdkmd64.sys and whether you upgraded the driver i do not have an Intel GMA: Make sure that you did not use vLite to customize your Windows 7 installation i did not use vLite to customize my Windows 7 installation. Again, i've never heard of such a thing. The KB article says that SP1 will not be offered if your machine doesn't meet some secret special criteria. How can i discover what that secret criteria is? i presume it is logged somewhere. Nor am i particularly interested in a direct download link. i want to learn here. i want to be able to diagnose (i.e. in the future) why an update is not being offered. i'm a superuser here. Rather than others coming up with a checklist of things to try, i want to be able to come up with the checklist.

(Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) Unable to open the physical file "E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\ftrow_Go3D_catalog.ndf". Operating system error 2: "2(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105)". Database 'Go3D_Retailer' cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space. See the SQL Server errorlog for details. ALTER DATABASE statement failed. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5120) Background to this error I've been trying to move my destination logshipping database to another physical server for analysis purposes. Because I do not have active directory set up, I had to hack my process by using the same username/password for both the source and destination servers to get the process to work. Following that, I used this guy's solution to move the destination database to another server. However, this error occurs when I try to bring the database back online. I don't have an E drive on my server and I have no idea why it's trying to open a file from E drive. I have over a 100gb left on my hard disk so it's definitely not a space issue. This sounds like a bug... Any ideas? I'm running SQL Server 2008 Enterprise edition on Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit

  • windows 2003 - why can't serial port be accessed remotely?

    we have recently installed the updates on some of our servers, which have a bit of hardware attached via USB that presents itself as a serial (COM) port. The strange behaviour is that if I start a cmd shell on the server via VNC, I can open the serial port. If I run a service and start it from there (telnet, jenkins) then I receive a "not found" error for it. IE: C:\Documents and Settings\some_user>echo 1 >COM4: C:\Documents and Settings\some_user> on the local cmd will work, and on the remote telnet will give: C:\Documents and Settings\some_user>echo 1 >COM4: The system cannot find the file specified. C:\Documents and Settings\some_user> I cannot see any security settings on the Device manager settings panel for this device.

  • RDP problem with Vista and Windows 7 destination

    I use a server a home to host a bunch of concurrently running Hyper-V VM's with different OS's and software for testing. I have Vista on the laptop, all latest SP's and patches. The server is Server 2008 R2, fully patched. The guests are a mix of XP, Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7. If I connect to the Win XP or Server 2008 guest using RDP, it is always good. Very quick, no speed issues. If I connect to the Vista or Win 7 guests, the response time is so slow it is unusable. Usually 6 or 8 seconds, and at times it is to long to measure! This happens from both the laptop running Vista, and the server running Server 2008 R2. Does anyone know what the issue is with RDP on Vista and Windows 7 destinations? I did read this: http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/microsoft/remote-desktop-slow-problem-solved.asp and that is not the problem I have applied that change to all PC's.

  • Server 2008 R2 How to Change Windows 7 Basic Theme Color

    We're deploying thin clients connecting to a terminal server farm. The computers have high visibility to the public and I would like them to at least look presentable and not like something out of 1995. So I installed the Desktop Experience feature and enabled the Theme service. The server will not support Aero because it has no 3D graphics, but we can enable the Windows 7 Basic theme, which has the Aero look without the 3D effects. The problem with that theme is that you can select any window color you want, as long as it's baby boy blue. Is there a way to make those windows another color? The window color controls do nothing.

I would like to have windows server 2008 R2 for server development. i don't want to format windows 7 and install windows sever as i got win 7 with laptop.
