• Ubuntu Server 12.04 Screen Resolution "Out of Range"

  I'm fairly new to ubuntu and have just installed Ubuntu Server 12.04 on a spare machine to experiment and play with! The installation went without problem, however whenever the OS boots the monitor displays a an error message saying the resolution is "out of range" and i can't see to do anything - i can wait as long as i like, but nothing appears. Ubuntu is the only OS installed so bypasses GRUB on boot, although the GRUB screen is also out of range if forced on startup. I can access a shell from the recover mode and i can get at a terminal through a LiveCD of the Desktop version but have had little luck with either. I've been trying to figure this out for days and i'm at a total loss. Any thoughts?

• How to copy existing movie files on ipad to watch?

  I have an iPad and a desktop running Ubuntu 12.04 with lots of movie files of various formats (avi, mp4, m4v, etc). Is it possible to transfer those files from within linux directly to the iPad (without using iTunes to sync) over USB and then play those movies on the iPad without reformatting/resizing all of them? I've used iTunes in a Windows XP virtualbox instance with other iOS mobile devices before but I would prefer a pure linux approach if possible. (I'm creating this question so that I can share the solution I found because I failed to find a simple, satisfactory answer elsewhere).

• Inspecting the model in a Rails application

  I am learning some Ruby on Rails, and am a newbie. Most of my background is in ASP.net MVC on the back end. As I play with a basic scaffold project, I wonder about this case: you jump into an established Rails project and want to get to know the model. Based on what I have seen so far (again, simple scaffold), the properties for a given class are not immediately revealed. I don't see property accessors on the model classes. I do understand that this is because of the dynamic nature of Ruby and such things are not necessary or even perhaps desirable. Convention over code, I get that. (Am familiar with dynamic concepts, mostly via JS.) But if I am somewhere off in a view, and want to quickly know whether the (eg) Person object has a MiddleName property, how would I find that out? I don't have to go into the migrations, do I?

• Kernel freezes with nvidia optimus and bumblebee on 12.04

  I have a Sony VAIO with Intel i7-3520M and NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 640M LE]. I installed bumblebee and nvidia drivers. They work almost fine, but the system freezes like in a kernel panic once every day. I can play Dota 2 with primusrun on it with 20-30fps 1080p. But when I do something simple as expanding the KDE calendar widget from the bottom right corner, the system hangs a lot and windows borders get another border. The system freezes in not very intensive graphic tasks, for instance, ALT+TAB with KWin effects or pressing ALT+F2 for poping up the launcher. How can I solve this? Info: I use KDE. • General solution to solve different sports results in different languages

  I currently have some code that checks if squash and tennis scores are valid, both in javascript and PHP. This results in 4 blocks of code existing, 2 languages * 2 sports, which does not scale well should any extra sports come around, or extra languages... How can one describe the valid scores of games via a settings/text file, so that each language can parse them and apply these rules. • Support for non-english characters?

  Is support for non-english characters common in programming languages? I mean, technically, I would think it is feasable, but I don't have any experience in anything other than english, so I don't know how common it is. I know that there are non-english based programming languages, but can something like C#, C++, C, Java, or Python support non-english classes/methods/variables? • How to download streaming video from a flash player (arte)?

  there are a couple of concerts that I would very much like to view from Arte (I think it's a french TV channel?) but my connection is not good enough to stream the video. How can I download the file to play it locally? Here is an example link: http://www.my-jazzlive.tv/?p=1862 I have tried popular browser plugins such as DownloadHelper and Flash Video Downloader, these are working fine for me on sites such as youtube but they don't seem to recognise any stream from the Arte video player. I also looked through /tmp for something that looks like a partially downloaded video, but no luck.

• 11.10 runs really choppy and slow, but not if I choose "Gnome Classic"

  I'd like to use Unity with Ubuntu 11.10, but everything from Unity runs really choppy and slow. I have an ATI graphics card and I have installed the drivers through "Additional Drivers". The drivers work, as I can play 3d games flawlessly. When I drag the mouse box around or drag windows around, it is really choppy. I previously had Ubuntu 10.10 and everything worked fine. I installed gnome 3 on 11.10 and it does the same thing Unity does, very choppy and slow graphics. However, if I choose Gnome Classic, everything is fine. I can drag the mouse box all around with no problems. I can drag windows around and it looks and feels great. Is this a bug with Unity? Are others experiencing this? Or is there something I can do to fix this?

  I want to add videos to my website. I want to click on images and then to show video in "window" and start playing (popups like lightbox). I just don´t know what is best way to do it. I think one of the way is jQuery. I know that there is easy way with video tag in HTML5 but I want that this could be play on most browsers (not just with support HTML5, but not so old as IE6 :) ) and I don´t want to use flash or silverlight. What options I have? Is jQuery the way? And how can I do this? Thanks

• rsync not working between NTFS/FAT and EXT

  I have music that I play in my car, from an FAT32 USB stick. The folder which I use to put songs on is stored on my EXT4 hard drive. I add/remove/retag songs regularly and occassionally want to rsync the changes to the USB stick. But for some unknown reason (maybe permissions?), rsync copies all the files every time rather than just changed ones. I am calling rsync like : rsync -vrlptgD source dest How can I make it work like I want it to (i.e. know when a file hasn't been changed and don't copy it)?

• My Feelings About Microsoft Surface

  Advice: read the title carefully, I’m talking about “feelings” and not about advanced technical points proved in a scientific and objective way I still haven’t had a chance to play with a MS Surface tablet (I would love to, of course) and so my ideas just came from reading different articles on the net and MS official statements. Remember also that the MVP motto begins with “Independent” (“Independent Experts. Real World Answers.”) and this is just my humble opinion about a product and a technology. I know that, being an MS MVP you can be called an “MS-fanboy”, I don’t care, I hope that people can appreciate my opinion, even if it doesn’t match theirs. The “Surface” brand can be confusing for techies that knew the “original” surface concept but I think that will be a fresh new brand name for most of the people out there. But marketing department are here to confuse people… so I can understand this “recycle” of an existing name. So Microsoft is entering the hardware arena… for me this is good news. Microsoft developed some nice hardware in the past: the xbox, zune (even if the commercial success was quite limited) and, last but not least, the two arc mices (old and new model) that I use and appreciate. In the past Microsoft worked with OEMs and that model lead to good and bad things. Good thing (for microsoft, at least) is market domination by windows-based PCs that only in the last years has been reduced by the return of the Mac and tablets. Google is also moving in the hardware business with its acquisition of Motorola, and Apple leveraged his control of both the hardware and software sides to develop innovative products. Microsoft can scare OEMs and make them fly away from windows (but where?) or just lead the pack, showing how devices should be designed to compete in the market and bring back some of the innovation that disappeared from recent PC products (look at the shelves of your favorite electronics store and try to distinguish a laptop between the huge mass of anonymous PCs on displays… only Macs shine out there…). Having to compete with MS “official” hardware will force OEMs to develop better product and bring back some real competition in a market that was ruled only by prices (the lower the better even when that means low quality) and no innovative features at all (when it was the last time that a new PC surprised you?). Moving into a new market is a big and risky move, but with Windows 8 Microsoft is playing a crucial move for its future, trying to be back in the innovation run against apple and google. MS can’t afford to fail this time. I saw the new devices (the WinRT and Pro) and the specifications are scarce, misleading and confusing. The first impression is that the device looks like an iPad with a nice keyboard cover… Using “HD” and “full HD” to define display resolution instead of using the real figures and reviving the “ClearType” brand (now dead on Win8 as reported here and missed by people who hate to read text on displays, like myself) without providing clear figures (couldn’t you count those damned pixels?) seems to imply that MS was caught by surprise by apple recent “retina” displays that brought very high definition screens on tablets.Also there are no specifications about the processors used (even if some sources report NVidia Tegra for the ARM tablet and i5 for the x86 one) and expected battery life (a critical point for tablets and the point that killed Windows7 x86 based tablets). Also nothing about the price, and this will be another critical point because other platform out there already provide lots of applications and have a good user base, if MS want to enter this market tablets pricing must be competitive. There are some expansion ports (SD and USB), so no fixed storage model (even if the specs talks about 32-64GB for RT and 128-256GB for pro). I like this and don’t like the apple model where flash memory (that it’s dirt cheap used in thumdrives or SD cards) is as expensive as gold (or cocaine to have a more accurate per gram measurement) when mounted inside a tablet/phone. For big files you’ll be able to use external media and an SD card could be used to store files that don’t require super-fast SSD-like access times, I hope. To be honest I really don’t like the marketplace model and the limitation of Windows RT APIs (no local database? from a company that based a good share of its success on VB6+Access!) and lack of desktop support on the ARM (even if the support is here and has been used to port office). It’s a step toward the consumer market (where competitors are making big money), but may impact enterprise (and embedded) users that may not appreciate Windows 8 new UI or the limitations of the new app model (if you aren’t connected you are dead ). Not having compatibility with the desktop will require brand new applications and honestly made all the CPU cycles spent to convert .NET IL into real machine code in the past like a huge waste of time… as soon as a new processor architecture is supported by Windows you still have to rewrite part of your application (and MS is pushing HTML5+JS and native code more than .NET in my perception). On the other side I believe that the development experience provided by Visual Studio is still miles (or kilometres) ahead of the competition and even the all-uppercase menu of VS2012 hasn’t changed this situation. The new metro UI got mixed reviews. On my side I should say that is very pleasant to use on a touch screen, I like the minimalist design (even if sometimes is too minimal and hides stuff that, in my opinion, should be visible) but I should also say that using it with mouse and keyboard is like trying to pick your nose with boxing gloves… Metro is also very interesting for embedded devices where touch screen usage is quite common and where having an application taking all the screen is the norm. For devices like kiosks, vending machines etc. this kind of UI can be a great selling point. I don’t need a new tablet (to be honest I’m pretty happy with my wife’s iPad and with my PC), but I may change my opinion after having a chance to play a little bit with those new devices and understand what’s hidden under all this mysterious and generic announcements and specifications!

  I want to configure audio for ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop. Currently the audio just does not play. If i try and plug in headphones then somewhere midway to being fully plugged in the audio plays on the headphones, I plug in further and the sound disappears. How do I get this to work? lspci | grep audio Audio device: Intel Corporation Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller My laptop is one the beats edition HP laptops, and the driver for win7 was an IDT HD audio driver. --EDIT-- The output for cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec is Codec: IDT 92HD91BXX Codec: Intel PantherPoint HDMI I need to get both the IDT card to work and the HDMI card to work with my TV. --EDIT-- --EDIT 2-- I have added blacklist snd-usb-audio to the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Now the sound plays from my laptop speakers only when I plug in a headphones/external speaker. • How do I correctly group albums in Banshee?

  I use Banshee to manage & play my music (most of which came from emusic and CDs). I consistently have problems getting songs from the same album to appear as one album. This is particularly a problem with compilations, i.e. multiple artists on the same album. When I transfer songs to my Android phone (Nexus S), this issue follows. How do I edit files so that Banshee correctly identifies all the songs as belonging to the same album? I am using the latest Banshee via the unstable PPA.

• Taking the Plunge - or Dipping Your Toe - into the Fluffy IAM Cloud by Paul Dhanjal (Simeio Solutions)

  In our last three posts, we’ve examined the revolution that’s occurring today in identity and access management (IAM). We looked at the business drivers behind the growth of cloud-based IAM, the shortcomings of the old, last-century IAM models, and the new opportunities that federation, identity hubs and other new cloud capabilities can provide by changing the way you interact with everyone who does business with you. In this, our final post in the series, we’ll cover the key things you, the enterprise architect, should keep in mind when considering moving IAM to the cloud. Invariably, what starts the consideration process is a burning business need: a compliance requirement, security vulnerability or belt-tightening edict. Many on the business side view IAM as the “silver bullet” – and for good reason. You can almost always devise a solution using some aspect of IAM. The most critical question to ask first when using IAM to address the business need is, simply: is my solution complete? Typically, “business” is not focused on the big picture. Understandably, they’re focused instead on the need at hand: Can we be HIPAA compliant in 6 months? Can we tighten our new hire, employee transfer and termination processes? What can we do to prevent another password breach? Can we reduce our service center costs by the end of next quarter? The business may not be focused on the complete set of services offered by IAM but rather a single aspect or two. But it is the job – indeed the duty – of the enterprise architect to ensure that all aspects are being met. It’s like remodeling a house but failing to consider the impact on the foundation, the furnace or the zoning or setback requirements. While the homeowners may not be thinking of such things, the architect, of course, must. At Simeio Solutions, the way we ensure that all aspects are being taken into account – to expose any gaps or weaknesses – is to assess our client’s IAM capabilities against a five-step maturity model ranging from “ad hoc” to “optimized.” The model we use is similar to Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. It’s based upon some simple criteria, which can provide a visual representation of how well our clients fair when evaluated against four core categories: ·         Program Governance ·         Access Management (e.g., Single Sign-On) ·         Identity and Access Governance (e.g., Identity Intelligence) ·         Enterprise Security (e.g., DLP and SIEM) Often our clients believe they have a solution with all the bases covered, but the model exposes the gaps or weaknesses. The gaps are ideal opportunities for the cloud to enter into the conversation. The complete process is straightforward: 1.    Look at the big picture, not just the immediate need – what is our roadmap and how does this solution fit? 2.    Determine where you stand with respect to the four core areas – what are the gaps? 3.    Decide how to cover the gaps – what role can the cloud play? Returning to our home remodeling analogy, at some point, if gaps or weaknesses are discovered when evaluating the complete impact of the proposed remodel – if the existing foundation wouldn’t support the new addition, for example – the owners need to decide if it’s time to move to a new house instead of trying to remodel the old one. However, with IAM it’s not an either-or proposition – i.e., either move to the cloud or fix the existing infrastructure. It’s possible to use new cloud technologies just to cover the gaps. Many of our clients start their migration to the cloud this way, dipping in their toe instead of taking the plunge all at once. Because our cloud services offering is based on the Oracle Identity and Access Management Suite, we can offer a tremendous amount of flexibility in this regard. The Oracle platform is not a collection of point solutions, but rather a complete, integrated, best-of-breed suite. Yet it’s not an all-or-nothing proposition. You can choose just the features and capabilities you need using a pay-as-you-go model, incrementally turning on and off services as needed. Better still, all the other capabilities are there, at the ready, whenever you need them. Spooling up these cloud-only services takes just a fraction of the time it would take a typical organization to deploy internally. SLAs in the cloud may be higher than on premise, too. And by using a suite of software that’s complete and integrated, you can dramatically lower cost and complexity. If your in-house solution cannot be migrated to the cloud, you might consider using hardware appliances such as Simeio’s Cloud Interceptor to extend your enterprise out into the network. You might also consider using Expert Managed Services. Cost is usually the key factor – not just development costs but also operational sustainment costs. Talent or resourcing issues often come into play when thinking about sustaining a program. Expert Managed Services such as those we offer at Simeio can address those concerns head on.   After upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10 i have no sound for HTML5 players in Google Chrome Browser. Firefox works. Flash Players are working. No sound on Youtube when using HTML5. No sound on vimeo (They have html5 player as standard). When I open the soundapplication, google doesn't show up when I try to play a html5 video. But it shows up, when playing a Flash Video.   I want to setup UBUNTU 12.04 desktop as Home media server. I have window 7 netbook and UBUNTU 12.04lts laptop even a samsun galaxy note tablet (android). Two desktop in other room with dualboot win7 and ubuntu. SHARP AQUOS Plasma Tv with Wi-Fi connected. I want to install ubuntu as media server to stream audio/video files over wi-fi. Not only this i want this media server to use its own processing power to decode ans stream so that on remote end only file can play without using their own resource. Is it possible to use ubuntu as media server to stream files without making the remote end to use there own resource. I want only bandwidth of Wi-Fi to be use in this and media center hardware resource.Remote end gadget should use only speaker and screen and not processing power of their own. Please any suggestion is it possible to do so ?

  I don't know how to reproduce this problem, because I don't regularly play music or sound. All I know is that, sometimes, I'll load a video (from youtube or from a local file) and there will be no sound. • Strange sound issues with Ubuntu 11.10

  I am having strange issues with sound and volume with Ubuntu 11.10 I've noticed very often, especially when I get my computer out of sleep, it lacks sound even though the volume slider is cranked all the way up. But when I plug my headphones in and then take them out, it seems to kick start my sound back! What gives? What daemon in /etc/int.d needs to be restared with the restart command to fix this? I have the following in my init.d folder /etc/init.d/alsa-restore and /etc/init.d/alsa-store Also, my start up ubuntu sound doesn't play either....

• Can I hook my xbox up to my Ubuntu PC

  My old xbox 360 won't eject disks, it makes a sound,but won't open. I want to play games, so I think I could hook it up to my PC running Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit and maybe I could use my PC's DVD drive. Can this work at all, or am I just crazy? There is an HDMI port on the back of my graphics card. If I can't do that, is there any software for Ubuntu that can rip the game off of a CD and put it on a flash drive? I have heard xbmcbuntu works great for gaming, but it doesn't work with my PC.
