• Problem running Qreator on Xubuntu-14.04

  I installed Qreator using apt-get on Xubuntu-14.04: $ sudo apt-get install qreator But the application fails to start! • Can't login into Fedora 14 (XFCE) desktop. For the second time.

  Hello. I'm experiencing a problem with my Fedora 14 XFCE spin, which doesn't seem to let me pass the login screen: I enter my password for my user record, authentication passes (no 'Authentication Failure' message, which was when I tried to login as 'root' without root login enabled), and the screen becomes black (command line) for a couple of seconds and (voila!) my login screen emerges again. I did nothing to cause that, it just suddenly logged me out when I was editing window manager settings via XFCE's built-in GUI utility (choosing window decorations style, from the listbox on the left) For the first time, I had to boot from live CD and do a fresh install, but I don't really want to do that again :) Is there some way to repair this (maybe login via command line and reset window manager settings, I don't know really)?   hello, i'm currently thinking of a clean way of how to bring an ftp server down for maintenance. i wonder, if anybody out there could give me some hints of how to solve this: i don't want to interrupt any current uploads, but want to block any new connects / uploads and wait, till uploads have finished, before taking down the ftp server is there a way of dynamically prevent user-logins and show a message eg.: "ftp currently down for maintenance" when a user tries to log in? are my thoughts on this very uncommon or how do others handle this -- i feel, that just halting ftp server and killing any current uploads is not the right way for this ... i use proftpd (with SQL backend) btw, maybe there are some specific solutions for this -- or are there any generic tools to achieve this? many thanks!

  I'm getting an error message: "unsupported compression method 98" when unzipping a file somebody sent to me. I've tried both an older version of WinZip, and 7-Zip 4.65. I've already asked the person to avoid using a non-standard compression method and re-send the file. I know WinZip (of which they are using a newer version) has compatibility options. But, I'm wondering: What archiving utilities, other than WinZip, support this "compression method 98"? In particular, is there a free and/or open source tool that supports that method? If not, why not? Is the method strictly proprietary to WinZip?

• Bonjour/DNS Service Discovery queries

  I'm trying to implement dns service discovery in my application (no, I'm not asking for a programmatic answer). What I believe is one of my big pain points is generating the query. I know I need to send out a multicast broadcast on port 5353 and want to look for devices of type _ipp._tcp and _print._tcp, but I don't know what the question section needs to look like. For example, in SSDP I sent out a query that looks like the following: "M-SEARCH * HTTP/1.1\r\n" "HOST: 239.255.255.250:1900\r\n" + "MAN: \"ssdp:discover\"\r\n" "ST: urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:Printer:1\r\n" "MX: 5000\r\n\r\n" From what I know about a DNS query I need to send something like: "_ipp.tcp,all,all" but I know there needs to be more. Any pointers to documentation, etc would be greatly appreciated! update rfc1035 appears to contain promising information re the message structure.

• Regarding Reinstalling PostgreSQL

  I was using PostgreSQL 8.4. I tried removing it through Synaptic Manager and then I tried to install 9.1, but I still version 8.4. I deleted all the files associated with postgresql. Now I am unable to install any version of PostgreSQL. When I try I get this error: Setting up postgresql-9.1 (9.1.3-1~lucid) ... .: 12: Can't open /usr/share/postgresql-common/maintscripts-functions dpkg: error processing postgresql-9.1 (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of postgresql: postgresql depends on postgresql-9.1; however: Package postgresql-9.1 is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing postgresql (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured No apport report written because the error message indicates its a followup error from a previous failure. • Mac OS X: network disabled because security breach

  Dear all, I just recieved a message on my Mac OS X system telling me (loosely translated from Dutch): "The network has been temporarily disabled because the network's security was breached." (It's a wireless WPA2-PSK secured network BTW) I looked in the logs of my router (a Zyxel P-2602HW-D1A) only to see a few (outbound) "syn flood TCP ATTACK" logs, but those were from like a week ago, other than that nothing. What tools on Mac OS X do I have to analyse this security breach occurence? Are there some security logs on Mac OS X that I can inspect? What other measurements should I take? And how serious should I take this warning from Mac OS X? System: Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz OS: Mac OS X 10.5.8 Network: wireless WPA2-PSK Relevant software: Parallels Desktop with Windows XP (was open, but stopped at the time) Other systems on my network: Windows XP SP3 desktop (was running at the time) If you need any more info, don't hestitate to ask. • How is the MTU is 65535 in UDP but ethernet does not allow frame size more than 1500 bytes

  I am using a fast ethernet of 100 Mbps, whose frame size is less than 1500 bytes (1472 bytes for payload as per my textbook). In that, I was able to send and receive a UDP packet of message size 65507 bytes, which means the packet size was 65507 + 20 (IP Header) + 8 (UDP Header) = 65535. If the frame's payload size itself is maximum of 1472 bytes (as per my textbook), how can the packet size of IP be greater than that which here is 65535? I used sender code as char buffer[100000]; for (int i = 1; i < 100000; i++) { int len = send (socket_id, buffer, i); printf("%d\n", len); } Receiver code as while (len = recv (socket_id, buffer, 100000)) { printf("%d\n". len); } I observed that send returns -1 on i > 65507 and recv prints or receives a packet of maximum of length 65507.

• Tool to copy IMAP folders from one server to another

  I need a Unix-based tool, such as a shell script or command-line program, to copy IMAP folders from one server to another. Ideally, the tool should copy all the folders for a single account (Inbox, Sent, Trash, and user-created folders) at once, rather than one folder at a time. It should preserve message dates. As an option, I'd like to be able to copy just a single IMAP folder. Alternatively, is there a tool to copy an mbox file to an IMAP server? I have direct access to the mbox files in the filesystem, but not to the filesystem of the remote IMAP server. Edit: Is there a way for a user to migrate their own questions to Server Fault?

• DFS replication initial step problem

  Heya, I just setup DFS on my network and it's working fine, and now I'm trying to setup DFS-R on a test folder, but then at the end of the procedure (all went fine, selected my 2 folders, primary folder, replication topology and such) I get this error message (roughly translated from french) : Unable to define security on the replicated folder. The shared administration folder doesn't exist. I'm also wondering if there's any required security on the folders to replicate so that DFS-R can access it. I was trying to add SYSTEM in the security, but it won't find it/allow me. The folder has many many files and folders on the primary DFS pointer, but none on the 2nd, just created it with quite the same rights. Note that the primary DFS pointer is on a 2008 server and the DFS service and the secondary DFS pointer are on a 2008r2. Any help is very appreciated, thanks.

  We just purchased a Windows-based VPS that I've been tasked to set up as a web server. It's running Windows 2003 Server Datacenter Edition. I downloaded the latest version of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and installed it, but when I try to run it I'm given an error message "Failed to create empty document." A search on Google gave the suggestion to change the path of the TEMP and TMP environment variables, which I tried but it made no difference. I also saw suggestions that this problem is caused by MMC, but I was just in MMC setting up a user account. What am I missing?

  Hi, I'm trying to grant read-only access (in other words: select queries only) to a user account on my SQL Server 2008 R2 database. Which rights do I have to grant to the user to make this work? I've tried several kinds of combinations of permissions on the server and the database itself, but in all cases the user could still run update queries or he could not run any queries (not even select) at all. The error message I always got was The server principal "foo" is not able to access the database "bar" under the current security context. Thanks for your help, Adrian

• Notepad++ doesn't launch (notepad++.exe present in the task manager)

  Yesterday Notepad++ was runnable, but today it doesn't. In spite of the notepad++.exe (with its 13 process) presence is the tasks manager, Notepad++ window doesn't launch. I tried to uninstall and re-install the sofware (and the first launch works), notepad.exe is present in C:\Windows and C:\Windows\Sytem32 folders. The last file opened with notepad++ was a xml file which isn't readable by other softwares because of the following error message : The '<' caracter can not be used in a value attribut What can I do please ?

• Unable to sync the Zune software with my HTC HD7

  I have a brand new HTC HD7 with Windows Phone 7, with no Software installed. I am running on Windows 7 64 bit. Whenever I try to sync my Mobile Device with Zune- I get this message: Can't connect to your phone. Disconnect it, restart it, then try connecting again I've downloaded latest Zune software and all updates. I don't have any certificates on my personal certificates. My phone is listed under Portable devices in Device manager (It shows as phone with driver version 4.7.965.0). I've restarted both my computer and the mobile device few times. I tried unlocking the device during the Zune sync Any ideas as to how I can sync my phone ?

• OS X Server App ail not accept login credentials

  I cannot login to the server app and i know for sure all the login info is right. every time i enter my password the name window shakes to tell me it's invalid. I never post unless I'm out of ideas and I need it to be up so I can host my splash page tonight. i've spoken with "certified apple" specialists at some local mac stores and they are stumped too. Something is going on with the apache server, that's all i know for sure. I'll be monitoring this closely so any requests for info, etc. can be filled instantly. Thanks in advance. here's a few things i've noticed: I can ssh successfully into the server address as both root and admin. I've been fussing with the workgroup manager and could use guidance if that's where the problem lies. console shows this message repeatedly (org.apache.httpd[1890]) Exited with code: 1). • Nvidia Ion HDMI output problems with Acer Revo

  I bought an Acer Revo. First I connected it to my Sony TV via HDMI output. For a few days it worked very well. Then one day when switching on the computer, it boots and the TV screen turns black and the TV displays the error message "no input signal". After that, i've upgraded my hdd. With help of clonezilla i've copied the old disk to the new disk. Next step was to copy the vhd to another partition. Then i updated the boot menu. However, the step C:\>bcdedit /set {guid} device vhd=[driveletter:]\<directory>\<vhd filename> fails with the message An error has occurred setting the element data. The request is not supported. what is happening?

• PSU requirement question for my PC setup.

  I understand that sometimes there may be a situation where the PSU is way more than required but in this case of mine, I'm not too sure. Sometimes when I play games, my computer will crash and restarts itself, 10 mins into the game. Once I received a message that says something like the power is overheating or something like that. Ok, so I have a 500W PSU. I have: 1x Internal DVD writer 1x SATA 250GB HD 1x Nvidia 8500 GT 2GB RAM. As I'm planning to get an additional 250GB SATA HD, I wonder if I need to increase my PSU as well -- in full knowledge of the previous crashes experienced before. Should I upgrade my PSU to 650W perhaps, or is that excessive?

• Can't connect to wireless router anymore due to data rate problem

  I was playing around with my wireless router, and switched the mode to a fixed mode B. Now< I can no longer assoicate to the AP. Windows does not give any particular error message, but with wireshark I see that the returned error is that the client does not support the necessary data rate. My wireless card is type n, and it is set to mode a/b/g compatible. I tried setting ot to just b, however this made no difference. How can I set the data rate of my card so that I can connect again to my AP? I would prefer not to just reset the device, as there has been some configuration done that would be a pain to redo, and as well I do not have the ISP password handy. Regardless I would like to understand this situation better.

Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URl: http:go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=49251. Just to make sure: SQL 2005 express is installed and I connect to it via SSMS. Update: I am 90% sure that this is a Microsoft bug with x64 machines.

This sounds similar to the issue described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968372 except I am using two forwarders (128.59.59.70 from above as well as 128.59.62.10) and falling back to root hints so the preconditions to expose the issue are not the same. Nevertheless, I also applied the MaxCacheTTL registry fix as described and restarted DNS and the whole server as well but the problem persists. The problem occurs on all domain controllers in this domain and has occurred since half a year ago, even though the servers are getting automatic Windows updates. EDIT Here is a debug log. In this case, I didn't see any packets going out from my DNS server even though bogus. was not in the cache (the debug log was already running and this is the first time I queried this server for bogus. or any TLD). It just returned SERVFAIL without consulting any other DNS server, as in the Microsoft KB article linked above.

• Problems accessing FileZilla FTP Server from static IP

  I'm trying to connect to my FTP server from my external IP address on Comcast Business. On the gateway I've set up port-forwarding on ports 20-21 to my server. Additionally I've forwarded ports 7000-8000 to my server for use in passive mode. In my FileZilla Server application I've set up passive mode to use my static IP and to use the subset of ports listed above. Unfortunately, it doesn't work through the external static IP for some reason, but I can internally. When I try to connect through static IP, the FileZila monitor says Connected, sending welcome message.... 220 FileZillaServer version 0.9.37 beta could not send reply, disconnected My firewall doesn't register any block events and windows firewall is disabled. What am I doing wrong or missing?

  I've set-up FileZilla server a Windows 2008 Machine, I then created the user, password and added a share folder which I set to Home Directory. Command: TYPE I Response: 200 Type set to I Command: PASV Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode ({}DATA) Command: MLSD The connection works fine, however no remote directory is selected, it shows as "/" however uploading any file fails. Any suggestions on how to debug this more?
