• backup dedicated server runing ubuntu 10.04 and plesk 11.01 prior to update os to uduntu 12.04

  i would like to backup my dedicated server which is my web server hosting various sites and email, so that I can update the os to Ubuntu 12.04, and basically restore back to 10.04 if things go wrong. I have a local machine that I can install 12.04 onto an then I was going to rsinc between the two, but I am fairly clueless when it comes to linux. I can ssh into the remote server and gain root access. can anyone explain if i need to backup the whole server hard drive or just some of the files? Thanks Timmo.

• What set of tools make up "the rails way" of testing javascript in the browser?

  What's the concensus for doing in-browser (either headless or remote-controlled) testing of javascript? Unit testing my JS is nice, but can't protect against irresponsible changes to the DOM. Unit testing of the JS and functional testing of the views to make sure they both provide and utilize the same, correct DOM, might work, but then the link between JS and DOM is being covered in two places which seems brittle or cumbersome. Is there an acknowledged "Rails Way" to implement full-stack tests, where I can run my javascript against the DOM rendered by the rest of the app, and check the results? (Something like what PHPUnit and Selenium give us, but inside the rails framework?)

• Staying concentrated during small pauses [migrated]

  My workflow includes some steps that make me wait for 0.5 to 2 minutes to complete: long remote git operations, creating / rebooting an instance in the cloud, etc. It's safe to assume that these operations cannot be made any faster. The resulting delays are the biggest flow-breakers for me. These are too long to just sit and stare at the progress indicators, but too short to take a walk and grab a coffee. Temptation to check some websites is big, and it's often a road to 20-30 minutes of procrastination + the time to get into the flow again. What are your coping strategies?

• Are these hacking attempts or something less sinister?

  I just had a look through our web server error logs, and Terminal services is reporting: "Remote session from client name a exceeded the maximum allowed failed logon attempts. The session was forcibly terminated." Hundreds of times, every 10.5 seconds or so for a period of about 5-10 minutes, once at 2pm yesterday and once again at about 1am this morning. We CURRENTLY have RDP open to the outside, as I am just completing the setup and now and then I/Others need to jump on from an outside office/location (VPN isn't an option) As these are so regular, am I right in assuming that they may be the result of some sort of dictionary attack? or could something like an internal admin's hung session cause such a mass of events? (Win Server 2008 R2)

• After Upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 missing user in login screen

  I have upgraded to 13.10 from 13.04 now after booting (even after updates and rebooting) my user id is not listed. It has a uid higher than the minimum in lightdm.conf. I have the user light display manager , guest , and remote login options in the login screen but not my ususal user id that I have been using from ubuntu 9 something. It is a normal user and an administrator so that I could authorize drivers, updates, etc... I do not have any custom display manager setup. It has been standard unity since unity was available. I can login to my account by logging in as guest opening a termial and using su - user Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

  I am working on a project where we would like to have build a web interface that gives the user the ability to "Google" files in a directory in a remote machine. For example, the user would type a string in a box, and then the system would find all files that contain that string and present them in the browser. The system would then give the user the ability click on any of the files to open them/display them in the browser. We want to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible, but don't really know where to start (none of us in the team have much experience building websites). What software packages, libraries or tools exist that can help us get this done?

  I see that Google App Engine apps run on a so-called secured sandbox JRE; that is, a JRE that Google modified and that makes changes to certain JRE types. This is how GAE prevents developers from writing apps that can do things like: Access the local file system via File Make remote JDBC calls Use JNDI Lots of other restrictions We have a similar need where we have an app that developers will be able to write plugins for. These plugins will need to utilize an API (a JAR) that we distribute with our app. We cannot afford for plugins to do certain things, particularly on the end user's file system, and need to modify the File class in a similar manner that GAE does. Long back-story short, this means we'll need to ship our app with a custom, modified JRE. My question: is this legal to do, or did Google likely pay Oracle some fee to modify/distribute their own JRE for app engine?

  I followed the instructions that the answer on this thread gave, Easiest way to setup Ubuntu as a VPN server. However, I cannot get it to work. When I try to connect to my network, it just says the server cannot be reached. I setup the remote IP options (which I uncommented) to be 10.0.2.2-100. My router serves out 10.0.1.2-250. I also have users setup, but they are uncommented as well. I assume you need to uncomment them?

• SharePoint 2010 slow page response time suddenly !

  Hello, One of my customers faced a problem that suddenly their SharePoint portal was loading extremely slower than usual. After some basic troubleshooting I did not find anything suspicious in the ULS logs, IIS logs or even Event logs. After that, I came to the part that I like most which is capturing a memory dump for the IIS process and analyzing the threads running. I searched for any common mistakes like looping a large list, calling a remote web service but couldn't find any. After a deep analysis of the memory dump (Which was done by an Escalation Engineer for SharePoint), it seems that the farm root certificate was missing and therefore was trying to validate it from the internet every time the user requests to load the page and this was the resolution http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2625048 Cheers,

• Stuck in logon loop

  Here's the deal. I set up a computer with Ubuntu 10.04 for my grandmother. Everything worked fine. I connected it to the internet at her house today. After rebooting the computer I found that the computer would kick you back to the logon screen if you attempted to logon to her account. It worked fine logging on to my admin account, and also in Gnome's safe mode. I thought it had resolved itself, but turns out it hadn't, and now I don't have physical access to the computer, plus the remote connection I'd hoped to use only works intermittently. I need some suggestions for troubleshooting for when I'm at her house at some point next week. Ask for any more details, but I'm afraid I won't be able to provide many more until I've checked it out in person, since she is basically unable to use a computer beyond web browsing. • What is a good scripting language for FTP downloading

  I need to develop some scripts for downloading files from a remote server to our file system. We need to grab files that have various timestamps, and place them into appropriate folders on our system. I'm probably opening quite the can of worms here, but which scripting language would be the best for getting this done? Right now I am using C Shell, which is working fine, but it is requiring multiple scripts because of the use of the ftp command. I wanted to know if there is a better option before I go too far into this project. There are no security concerns within the scripts as far as FTP accounts (public access FTP)

• LinkedIn API returns 'Unauthorized' response (PHP OAuth)

I want to be able to update a user's status, but at the moment I'm unable to interact with LinkedIn's API at all. • HOWTO: disable jmx in activemq network of brokers (spring, xbean)

  Since I've struggled a lot with this problem, I am posting my solution. Disabling jmx in an activemq network of brokers removes race conditions about the registration of the jmx connector. When starting multiple activemq servers on the same machine: Failed to start jmx connector: Cannot bind to URL [rmi://localhost:1099/jmxrmi]: javax.naming.NameAlreadyBoundException: jmxrmi [Root exception is java.rmi.AlreadyBoundException: jmxrmi] Another problem with this is, that even if you don't cause a race condition, this exception can still occur. Even when starting one broker after another while waiting for them to initialize properly in between. If one process is run by root as the first instance and the other as a normal user, somehow the user process tries to register its own jmx connector, though there already is one. Or another exception which happens when the broker that successfully registered the jmx connector goes down: Failed to start jmx connector: Cannot bind to URL [rmi://localhost:1099/jmxrmi]: javax.naming.ServiceUnavailableException [Root exception is java.rmi.ConnectException: Connection refused to host: localhost; nested exception is: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused] Those exceptions cause the network of brokers to stop working, or to not work at all. The trick to disable jmx was, that jmx had to be disabled in the connectionfactory aswell. The documentation http://activemq.apache.org/jmx.html does not say that this is needed explicitly.   This question is regarding using STSADM command to create new site collection in Active Directory Account creation mode. My setup is like this- I have 2 virtual PCs in a Windows XP Pro SP3 host. Both VPCs are Windows Server 2003 R2. One VPC acts as the DC, DNS Server, DHCP server, has Active Directory installed and is also the Database Server. The other VPC is the domain member and it is the IIS web server, POP/SMTP server and it has WSS 3.0 installed. I created a new site using the GUI in Central Admin page. For creating a site collection under the newly created site, I needed to use the STSADM command line tool since it cannot be done from Central Admin page in Active Directory Account creation mode.   Hi, I'm looking for a description of the root of this error: "Transaction context in use by another session". I get it sometimes in one of my unittests so I can't provider repro code. But I wonder what is "by design" reason for the error.   When I build my model with the symfony doctrine:build --all --and-load command I have made no major changes to the model/schema, this is something new.
