• Regex to GENERATE thumbnails!?!?! (but that's crazy!)

  Hello everyone! So here is my situation, and the solution that I've come up with to solve the problem. I have created an application that includes TinyMCE to allow users to create HTML content for publishing. The user can include images in their markup, and drag/resize those images effecting the final Width/Height attributes in the IMG tag. This is all great, the users can include images and resize/relocate them to their desired appearance. But one big problem is that I am now sending a (possibly) much larger image to the client, only to have the browser resize the image into the requested Width/Height attributes. All that bandwidth and lost load time.... So my solution is to pre-process my users markup content, scanning all of the IMG tags and parsing out the Height/Width/Src attributes. Then set each img's SRC tag to a phpThumb request with the parsed Height/Width passed into the thumbnails URL. This will create my reduced size image (optimising bandwidth at the expense of CPU and caching). What do you think about this solution? I've seen other posts where people were using mod_rewrite to do something similar, but I want to effect the content on the page service and not manipulate the image requests as they're being received. .... Any thoughts about this design? I need some help with the fine details as my regex skills need some work, but I'm very short on time and promise to pay my technical knowledge debt soon. To make the regex's easier, I can be sure of some things. Only img tags that need this processing will have an existing width="" height="" attributes (with the double quotes, and lower cased text, but I suppose matching the text case insensitive would be better if TinyMCE changes) So a regex to match only the necessary Img tags, and maybe another three regex's to extract the src, the width, and the height?   Did Microsoft add anything to improve offline development? I'm comparing TFS with Mercurial. Edit #1: Work Environment Details 20 Developers. 1 location. TFS 2005 is already installed, but only being used by 4 developers. Those that use TFS, are only using it for Source Control Others using VSS. :( Many small projects (Over 50 projects active) Project Team size: 1 to 3 Several employees work from home one day a week, but have VPN access There is a group of our devs that have never used TFS that are still on VSS. They are the ones pushing use to jump ship to Mercurial. Mercurial offline features is one reason they prefer it. Another reason is they just associate TFS with VSS regardless of my assertions to the contrary. We do use FogBugz and everyone agrees that it is great! This kind of excited our love for NON Microsoft products that our MUCH lighter. I don't think it is worth it.

• Pass object from webserver to client

  I developed a C# web application that calls a web-service which returns a base64 encoded array (PDF file). I then convert that array into a UCOMIStream object (I know it is obsolete, but the DLL that I am using requires it as a parameter). I use the following code to do the conversion which works perfectly. I can pass this object to the DLL so that I can print the PDF. This works great on the Webserver, but the requirement is to print it locally. • Why use Entity Framework over Linq2SQL if...

  To be clear, I am not asking for a side by side comparision which has already been asked Ad Nauseum here on SO. I am also Not asking if Linq2Sql is dead as I don't care. What I am asking is this.... I am building internal apps only for a non-profit organization. I am the only developer on staff. We ALWAYS use SQL Server as our Database backend. I design and build the Databases as well. I have used L2S successfully a couple of times already. Taking all this into consideration can someone offer me a compelling reason that I should use EF instead of L2S? I was at Code Camp this weekend and after an hour long demonstration on EF, all of which I could have done in L2S, I asked this same question. The speakers answer was, "L2S is dead..." Very well then! NOT! (see here) I understand EF is what MS WANTS us to use in the future(see here) and that it offers many more customization options. What I can't figure out is if any of that should, or does, matter for me in this environment. One particular issue we have here is that I inherited the Core App which was built on 4 different SQL Data bases. L2S has great difficulty with this but when I asked the aforementioned speaker if EF would help me in this regard he said "No!"

• Opening up process and grabbing window title. Where did I go wrong?

  In my application I allow for the users to add a program from a open file dialog, and it then adds the item to a listview and saves the items location into the tag. So what I am trying to do is when the program in the listview is selected and the button is pressed, it starts a timer and this timer checks to see if the process is running, and if it isn't launches the process, and once the process is launched it gets the window title of the process and sends it to a textbox on another form. EDIT: The question is if anyone can see why it is not working, by this I mean starting the process, then when it's started closing the form and adding the process window title to a textbox on another form. I have tried to get it working but I can't. I know that the process name it is getting is right I think my problem is to do with my for loop. Basically it isn't doing anything visible right now. I feel like I am very close with my code and im hoping it just needs a couple minor tweaks. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if my coding practices aren't that great, im pretty new to this. EDIT:I thought I found a solution but it only works now if the process has been started already. It won't start it up. • Image sprite not lining up in firefox

  I am working with an image sprite to create my buttons. They work right in every browser except firefox. Lets say i have 2 spans next to eachother: <span class="spanleft"></span><span class="spanright"></span> and give them some styling(this is the actual code i use for the sprite) .spanleft{ background:url('/templates/default/img/auction/btn-toolbar.png') no-repeat 0 0; display:block; float:left; height:100px; width:13px; } .spanright{ background:url('/templates/default/img/auction/btn-toolbar.png') no-repeat 0 -104px; display:block; float:left; height:100px; width:30px; margin-left:0px; } Now this works in every browser i tested, the images line up great. But in firefox I get a small offset. Now i fiddled with the pixels a lot. Its not an offset of 1px, the offset is about 0.5 of a px. yeah. Ive made a screenshot of what i mean, and i'm going to put in the sprite for the buttons, they make lovely buttons, upstate,downstate,hover,disabled. You can use them in your projects. • Mongodb, linq driver. How to construct Contains with variable or statements

  I'm using the LINQ Driver for C#, works great. Sorting a lot of properties but heres a problem I can't solve, its probebly simple. var identifierList = new []{"10", "20", "30"}; var newList = list.Where(x => identifierList.Contains(x.Identifier)); This is NOT supported ... So I could do something like: var newList = list.Where(x => x.Identifier == "10" || x.Identifier == "20" || x.Identifier == "30"); But since the list is variable ... how do I construct the above? Or are there even better alternatives? The list is of type IQueryable<MyCustomClass> For information ... this is used as a filter of alot of properties. In SQL I could have a parent - child relationship. But as I can't as the parent for the main ID I need to take all the ID's out and then construct it like this. Hopes this makes sense. If needed I will explain more.

• JSplitPane overlaps JButtons in BorderLayout, but does not when layout is null

  So I'm having another issue..... I'm currently using a BorderLayout in my GUI so that when I resize my jframe, all of the internal components resize with it. I couldn't get any other layout to work with how I want the GUI to look while providing this resizing capability. At the top I have a JMenuBar, and below it I have a bunch of buttons. Below that I am supposed to have a JSplitPane, and it is there. However, the buttons seemed to be contained within the JSplitPane, which is not my intention. So when anything happens within the splitpane, the buttons disappear until I move my mouse over them again. When I set my layout to null everything works great except I lose the resizing capability, which is not good. Tried posting images but it wont let me since my rep isnt at 10 yet :( Any suggestions? I've tried putting the buttons into a JPanel then adding the jpanel but the splitpane overlaps with that. Same with a JToolBar. The order in which I add my items is: 1) the menu bar setJMenuBar(menuBar) 2) the buttons getContentPane().add(btnZoomIn) etc. 3) the split pane getContentPane().add(splitPane) then the rest of the things you see after that

• JQuery event that triggers after CSS is loaded?

  (I posted this on the jquery forums but it's still awaiting moderation, so I thought I'd try my luck here since stackoverflow is so awesome. If I get an answer I'll post it here.) Maybe someone can help me with this, I have a couple of links on my page (inside a <div id="theme-selector">) which allow you to change the CSS stylesheets: $('#theme-selector a').click(function(){ var path = $(this).attr('href'); $('head link').remove(); $('head').append('<link type="text/css" href="'+path+'" rel="stylesheet" />'); return false; }); Now, after I've changed the style on the page, I want to get the new background color, using the following code (which I put after the $('head').append call): var bgcolor = $('body').css('background-color'); alert(bgcolor); The problem is, I think, that it takes some time for the browser to download the new stylesheet and I sometimes get the old background color in my alert message. Is there some event I can bind that will only alert me after all the stylesheets are loaded on the page? At the moment, all I can think of is using a setTimeout(function(){}, 5000); which isn't great, because what if it takes longer/shorter to load all the CSS on the page. Let me know if I need to clarify anything and I can provide more code. Thanks in advance.

• Setting Cursor property has no effect (C#)

  Hello, I have a class that I've derived from System.Windows.Forms.Panel, and my application has a main form with one of these panels. On the whole, the panel works great! The only thing I'm having trouble with is setting the cursor. Whether I'm setting it to one of the static members of the Cursors class (Default, WaitCursor, etc.) or setting it to a custom cursor that I've loaded from a resource, the end result is the same: it does nothing. I still see the default mouse pointer, no matter what. This line of code is inside a method of my panel-derived class: this.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor; I can set a break point there, and see that this line is being hit when I expect it to. I've also created an override for the OnCursorChanged method, and set a breakpoint in there just to see if it's being triggered. I can verify that both breakpoints are being hit when I expect them to. However, the cursor just never changes. There must be something that I'm missing. Does anyone have any ideas? P.S. I also did try setting Current.Cursor as well, however that did not help.

  I have a project that I am working on that uses a little image to mark a record as a favorite on multiple rows in a table. The data gets pulled from a DB and the image is based on whether or not that item is a favorite. One image for a favorite, a different image if not a favorite. I want the user to be able to toggle the image and make it a favorite or not. But you have to double click to get the image to change if it IS a favorite initially. This causes the AJAX to fire twice and essentially make it a favorite then not a favorite before the image responds. The user thinks he's made it a favorite because the image changed, but in fact, it's not. Help anybody?

• How to round a number to n decimal places in Java

  What I'd like is a method to convert a double to a string which rounds using the half-up method. I.e. if the decimal to be rounded is a 5, it always rounds up the previous number. This is the standard method of rounding most people expect in most situations. I also would like only significant digits to be displayed. That is there should not be any trailing zeroes. I know one method of doing this is to use the String.format method: String.format("%.5g%n", 0.912385); returns: 0.91239 which is great, however it always displays numbers with 5 decimal places even if they are not significant: String.format("%.5g%n", 0.912300); returns: 0.91230 Another method is to use the DecimalFormatter: DecimalFormat df = new DecimalFormat("#.#####"); df.format(0.912385); returns: 0.91238 However as you can see this uses half-even rounding. That is it will round down if the previous digit is even. What I'd like is this: 0.912385 -> 0.91239 0.912300 -> 0.9123 What is the best way to achieve this in Java?

• PHP: Check if 0?

  Hi, I am using a class which returns me the value of a particular row and cell of an excel spreadsheet. To build up an array of one column I am counting the rows and then looping through that number with a for() loop and then using the $array[] = $value to set the incrementing array object's value. This works great if none of the values in a cell are 0. The class returns me a number 0 so it's nothing to do with the class, I think it's the way I am looping through the rows and then assigning them to the array... I want to carry through the 0 value because I am creating graphs with the data afterwards, here is the code I have. // Get Rainfall $rainfall = array(); for($i=1;$i<=$count;$i++) { if($data->val($i,2) != 'Rainfall') // Check if not the column title { $rainfall[] = $data->val($i,2); } } For your info $data is the excel spreadsheet object and the method $data->val(row,col) is what returns me the value. • Django url rewrites and passing a parameter from Javascript

  As a bit of a followup question to my previous , I need to pass a parameter to a view. This parameter is not known until the JS executes. In my URLConf: url(r'^person/device/program/oneday/(?P<meter_id>\d+)/(?P<day_of_the_week>\w+)/$', therm_control.Get_One_Day_Of_Current_Thermostat_Schedule.as_view(), name="one-day-url"), I can pass it this URL and it works great! ( thanks to you guys). http://127.0.0.1:8000/personview/person/device/program/oneday/149778/Monday/ In My template I have this: var one_day_url = "{% url personview:one-day-url meter_id=meter_id day_of_the_week='Monday' %}"; In my javascript: $.ajax({ type: 'GET', url: one_day_url , dataType: "json", timeout: 30000, beforeSend: beforeSendCallback, success: successCallback, error: errorCallback, complete: completeCallback }); When this triggers it works fine except I dont necessarily want Monday all the time. If I change the javascript to this: var one_day_url = "{% url personview:one-day-url meter_id=meter_id %}"; and then $.ajax({ type: 'GET', url: one_day_url + '/Monday/', dataType: "json", timeout: 30000, beforeSend: beforeSendCallback, success: successCallback, error: errorCallback, complete: completeCallback }); I get the Caught NoReverseMatch while rendering error. I assume because the URLconf still wants to rewrite to include the ?P\w+) . I seems like if I change the URL conf that breaks the abailty to find the view , and if I do what I do above it gives me the NoREverseMatch error. Any guidance would be appreciated.

• Is inheritance bad nowadays?

  Personally, I think inheritance is a great tool, that, when applied reasonably, can greatly simplify code. However, I seems to me that many modern tools dislike inheritance. Let's take a simple example: Serialize a class to XML. As soon as inheritance is involved, this can easily turn into a mess. Especially if you're trying to serialize a derived class using the base class serializer. Sure, we can work around that. Something like a KnownType attribute and stuff. Besides being an itch in your code that you have to remember to update every time you add a derived class, that fails, too, if you receive a class from outside your scope that was not known at compile time. (Okay, in some cases you can still work around that, for instance using the NetDataContract serializer in .NET. Surely a certain advancement.) In any case, the basic principle still exists: Serialization and inheritance don't mix well. Considering the huge list of programming strategies that became possible and even common in the past decade, I feel tempted to say that inheritance should be avoided in areas that relate to serialization (in particular remoting and databases). Does that make sense? Or am messing things up? How do you handle inheritance and serialization?

• Force screen size when testing embedded DOS app in Windows 7 command window

  I'm doing some embedded DOS development with OpenWatcom (great Windows-hosted compiler for targeting 16-bit DOS applications). The target hardware has a 24x16 character screen (that supposedly emulates CGA to some degree), and I'm trying to get the CMD.EXE window on my Windows 7 machine to stay at a fixed 24x16 without any scroll bars. I've used both the window properties and MODE CON: COLS=24 LINES=16 to get the screen size that I wanted, but as soon as my application uses an INT10 BIOS calls to clear the screen, the mode jumps back to 80x24. Here's what I'm using to clear the screen: void cls(void) { // Clear screen and reset cursor position to (0,0) union REGS regs; regs.w.cx = 0; // Upper left regs.w.dx = 0x1018; // Lower right (of 16x24) regs.h.bh = 7; // Blank lines attribute (white text on black) regs.w.ax = 0x0600; // 06 = scroll up, AL=00 to clear int86( 0x10, &regs, &regs ); } Any ideas? I can still do my testing at 80x24 (or 80x25), but it doesn't entirely behave like the 24x16 mode.

Starting with this idea in mind, I'd like to know what is your process from having an idea to maintain this great working project. For me actually, the process is the following one : Having the idea Checking this project already exists, and how it works Describing on a paper its functionalities finding a good and adequate name for this (and checking the domain availability with WHOISMyProject) Making a quick layout of the project on a paper Designing the project (via TheGimp, Photoshop, etc) Making a complete mockup of each pages Developing a prototype of the client-side application (with false datas) Developing the server side Testing Making the documentation/help/faq Releasing the project Maintaining it. Would you change the order of some points ? add/remove some ? I would please to know how you do that. I'm looking to set up a perfect workflow in order to make my project become real in the best way possible. Thank you for your opinion !

• How to import properties of an external API into Script#

  I'm using Script# inside Visual Studio 2010 to import the API for the HTML5 Canvas element. Its working great for things like FillRect(), MoveTo(), LineTo() and so on. I've declared the following interface and then I can code against it in C#. The following interface definition produces a prefix in the JavaScript, which causes it to fail. string StrokeStyle { get; set; } string Font { get; set; } The previous property will create this JavaScript: ctx.set_strokeStyle('#FF0'); How can I get Script# to generate the simple assignment properties of the canvas context without the get_/set_ prefix?

• ASP.NET - Google Chrome caching DropDownList selections

  I'm experiencing what seems to be a caching issue with Google Chrome and Safari on my cart page. In the cart there are 2 dropdown lists. When you hit the checkout button after changing the values in the dropdown lists, it commits what's selected in the lists to the database. It's a little bit hard to explain the unexpected behavior so I will try to write it out step by step with an illustration of my problem. Lets say the first dropdown list has the values of: VALUE1 VALUE2 VALUE3 And the second dropdown list has the values of: DUMBO1 DUMBO2 DUMBO3 I add an item to my cart. Screen Says: VALUE1, DUMBO1 Database Says: VALUE1, DUMBO1 I hit Checkout. Database says: VALUE1, DUMBO1 (I can't see the dropdown lists after I hit checkout because i'm not at the cart page) I hit the back button. Screen Says: VALUE1, DUMBO1 Database Says: VALUE1, DUMBO1 I drop down the VALUE1 combo and select VALUE2, VALUE2 is selected momentarily and then the site posts back and VALUE1 is re-selected in the drop down list (from being reloaded from the DB) MOMENTARILY Screen Says: VALUE2, DUMBO1 Database Says: VALUE1, DUMBO1 THEN AFTER POSTBACK FROM DROPDOWNLIST_SELECTIONCHANGED EVENT Screen Says: VALUE1, DUMBO1 Database Says: VALUE1, DUMBO1 Hit Checkout. Database Says VALUE1 ,DUMBO1 (I can't see the dropdown lists after I hit checkout because i'm not at the cart page) Go back. Screen Says: VALUE2, DUMBO1 Database Says: VALUE1, DUMBO1 So it appears that it's remembering my selection of VALUE2 even though it jumped back to VALUE1 before I checked out. It seems to be a caching problem, however I've got some no-cache code to prevent caching of that page that works great in firefox and internet explorer but seems to be failing in Chrome and Safari. I'm basically returning in the headers for the cart page: no-cache, no-store, and must-revalidate to attempt to prevent caching, but based on this scenario it seems to be caching the page anyway and not reloading it when I hit the back button. I am open to any solutions or suggestions at this point. Thanks!

• c# How to implement a collection of generics

  I have a worker class that does stuff with a collection of objects. I need each of those objects to have two properties, one has an unknown type and one has to be a number. I wanted to use an interface so that I could have multiple item classes that allowed for other properties but were forced to have the PropA and PropB that the worker class requires. This is the code I have so far, which seemed to be OK until I tried to use it. A list of MyItem is not allowed to be passed as a list of IItem even though MyItem implements IItem. This is where I got confused. Also, if possible, it would be great if when instantiating the worker class I don't need to pass in the T, instead it would know what T is based on the type of PropA. Can someone help get me sorted out? • Interval arithmetic to correctly deal with end of month - Oracle SQL

  I need a function which will do interval arithmetic, dealing "correctly" with the different number of days in a month. For my version of "correctly" - see below! First try select to_date('31-May-2014') + interval '1' months from dual This returns an error, because there is no 31st June. I understand that this behaviour is expected due to the ANSI standard. Second try select add_months(to_date('31-May-2014'),1) from dual This correctly (in my use case) returns 30th June 2014, which is great. BUT select add_months(to_date('28-Feb-2014'),1) from dual returns 31st March 2014, when I want 28th March 2014. Background This has to do with legal deadlines. The deadlines are expressed in law as a number of months (say, 3) from a base date. If the base date is last day of the month and three months later the month is longer, then the deadline does NOT extend to the end of the longer month (as per the add_months function). However, if the base date is last day of the month and three months later the month is shorter, then the deadline expires on the last day of the shorter month. Question Is there a function that does what I need? I have intervals (year to month) stored in a table, so preferably the function would look like: add_interval_correctly(basedate DATE, intervaltoadd INTERVAL YEAR TO MONTH)

• Moving x,y position of all array objects every frame in actionscript 3?

  I have my code setup so that I have an movieclip in my library a class called "block" being duplicated multiple times and added into an array like this: function makeblock(e:Event){ newblock=new block; newblock.x=10; newblock.y=10; addChild(newblock); myarray[counter] = newblock; //adds a newblock object into array counter += 1; } Then I have a loop with a currently primitive way of handling my problem: stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, gameloop); function gameloop(evt:Event):void { if (moveright==true){ myarray[0].x += 5; myarray[1].x += 5; myarray[2].x += 5 -(and so on)- My question is how can I change x,y values every frame for new objects duplicated into the array, along with the previous ones that were added. Of course with a more elegant way than writing it out myself... array[0].x += 5, array[1], array[2], array[3] etc. Ideally I would like this to go up to 500 or more array objects for one array so obviously I don't want to be writing it out individually haha, I also need it to be consistent with performance so using a for loop or something to loop through the whole array and move each x += 5 wouldn't work would it? Anyway, if anyone has any ideas that'd be great!

• Replacing XML in File from "Document" in Java

  Hi, after processing my first steps in working with XML in java I am now at the point where I want to update some data in my XML/GPX file... Reaplacing it in my "Document" data type works great :) How here comes the question: how can I store the changed "document"-model back to my file? Do I have to do this by using the standart file-functions (via steams and so on) oder is the a more elegant way to do this? ;-) Here's the code I already worked out, maybe that could help.
