  I'm setting up a home NAS device (Synology DS409) that I'm planning to use for Time Machine backups (amongst other things). What are the tradeoffs between using iSCSI or AFP to mount the backup volume? The Synology wiki suggests that iSCSI is better if the Mac will be frequently disconnected from the network or sleeping, from the point of view of the volume automatically remounting. What about filesystem consistency? Given that unplugging a USB drive without properly unmounting it often requires the Time Machine volume to be repaired, would iSCSI have the same issues?

  I just bought a nettop. It came with WinXP Home. I first installed Win 7 on it. I wasn't that happy with the performance so I decided to go back to XP. I am using an external dvd drive and a Win XP Pro disc. I boot from the dvd drive and during the install get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3. • Two VPN (internet) connections rounting (win2003)

  Here is my setup: - win2003 server (ISA installed) with 3 NICs:   1) internal network   2) ISP 1 (default) network (DHCP enabled)   3) ISP 2 (backup) network (DHCP enabled) - several "normal" PC within internal net - one "special" PC within internal net Both ISP 1 and ISP 2 provide access to internet and their resources thru their VPN connections. The goal is to enable all "normal" PCs to use internet from ISP_1's VPN connection and "special" should use only ISP_2's VPN connection. Futhermore all "normal" and "special" PCs should have access to several servers accesible only thru ISP_2's VPN connection. • DHCP for Multiple Subnets

  So this is the current setup - essentially I would like to get my DHCP server, serving DHCP requests for two seperate subnets. Netgear DG834G acting as a modem connected to a Sonicwall Pro 2040. X0 - LAN - 192.168.1.0/24 X1 - WAN - <WAN-IP> X2 - WLAN - 192.168.10.0/24 At the moment, I have a 2008R2 server with DHCP installed, with an IP address on the 192.168.1.0/24 range handling DHCP fine for this subnet. The Sonicwall is configured correctly - anything connected to the WLAN has Full Allow to anything in the LAN, and vice versa but it will not lease an IP from my Server. I've also added another IP address to the server, so the physical NIC now has two IP's: 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.10.2 with a DHCP scope configured for each. Still no luck! Any ideas? Thanks!

There are a couple of other questions like this on the site but they're over a year old and knowing how fast paced the software game is I thought i'd repost! I use MacDraft for my 2d drafting and the same companies Interiors Pro for my 3d work, have done for a while. I used Rhino 4.0 at uni but being a student I had to find software that wasn't thousands of £$£$!! thus stumbling onto the Microspot products. Anybody using the software or found any other bargains out there?

• suggestions for migrating a windows 7 install to a new 4K sector disk

  Hi, I'm looking to upgrade the disk on a windows 7 box to a new larger drive. In the past for such migrations I'd just hook both drives up and use a linux boot disk and use dd to copy from one disk to the next... boot up the new drive & expand the partition. The drive I just purchased however is a western digital using 4k sectors... not sure if there'd be any complications using my old method moving from a 512b sector drive. Current plan is to try the migration by doing a win7 system image backup to an external drive... then restore the image to the new drive via system restore boot disk. Any suggestions or recommendations on how to best complete this migration would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Laptop freezes on Wireless Mouse Adapter attach/detach

  I am using Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 with Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1CG. Recently I have installed Windows 7 64-bit. Now once in a while when I plug-in or plug-out wireless mouse adapter, the computer freezes (image stays on the screen, but the computer is not responsive). I have noticed that it mostly happens after I recover my computer from sleep mode. To continue using laptop I have to shut it down by pressing and holding power button for 7 seconds and then booting it up again. What can be done to prevent this?

• Clear / Flush cached memory

  I have a small VPS with 6GB RAM hosting a couple of websites. Recently I have noticed that my cached memory size is quite high - see below: Cpu(s): 0.1%us, 0.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 99.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.2%hi, 0.4%si, 0.0%st Mem: 6113256k total, 5949620k used, 163636k free, 398584k buffers Swap: 1048564k total, 104k used, 1048460k free, 3586468k cached After investigating if there is some method to have this flushed or cleared I stumbled upon a command which is: sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches I read it could be useful to add this to a chron-task/job. Is this method recommended or could this lead to potential problems? The only concern I have is that I use one Magento installation on Memcached - could this have any negative effects on it? I am certainly not a pro therefore I would very much appreciate some expert advise. PS: My VPS runs on CentOS 5 x64 and I have WHM + NGINX installed.

• Location Services are always disabled in Mac OS X Lion

  A simple location services program was working fine on my machine and suddenly stopped working. Upon further exploring the problem, I realized that some process has disabled location services in System Preferences » Security & Privacy » Privacy. I checked Enable Location Services, but again it got disabled automatically. After some research I found that it's not just my program, even built-in system functions are also failing because of this problem for example System Preferences » Date & Time » Time Zone failed to get the current location. • Mac OS x 10.4 Tiger Will Not Boot

  My G5 Tower all of a sudden is ONLY booting to the Registration page, the where after you installed the software you are suppose to Register. I cant get it to boot in safe mode, so I am using my usb 2.0 SATA cable to connect my drive to a my macbook pro and I am using (CCC) Disc to Disc Clone and it is copying to my external WD passport drive and that makes a startup disc along with all my info from my drive. My question is was there anything easier and less time consuming than that? Does anyone know why this would happen all of a sudden? Thank You All in Advance for your help and support! Keith B

• Iptables mark incoming packet - vpn routing

  I have connected my home to my workplace for out of house backup reasons through openvpn. The connection is working nicely. At work I have 5 fixed IP addresses. Now I would like to assign one of these IP addresses to be forwarded to my home machine. I have confirmed packet arrival at my home machine with tcpdump. The problem is that my default route at home is NOT the tun0 (naturally), but eth0 to my own ISP. So I created a separate routing table to route my tun0 packets back to where they belong, but do not how to mark the incoming packet which arrive through tun0 with iptables, so I can drive them back. I do not want any port restrictions, but only what comes from tun0 should leave through tun0 thanks tom

• how can I git-revise configs in my /etc/ dir? (sudo has different keys..)

  I'd like to keep some of the folders in my /etc/ dir git-revised, cause I'm quite new to server administration and am constantly messing around in my /etc/nginx/ and /etc/bind/ directories. I've heard of people git-revising their either /etc/ directories, but that seems a bit like overkill, as at this point I'm only messing in those 2 subdirectories. The problem I'm having is that if I sudo my git operations, I don't have the right pubkeys to push to my remote repo (bitbucket). But if I don't sudo, I need to mess around with all the permissions (again, not very pro at this). Does anyone know best practices for managing their configs? or how I should solve this problem?   I am trying to set rsync tasks to Pull user profiles from 11 Windows machines running DeltaCopy Server and then configure ZFS periodic snapshot tasks for a backup solution. So far this has been working fine, although i would like to exclude certain file types like .DAT or NTUSER.DAT. My Exclusion file resides on the local ZFS Dataset (Receiving side) and is as follows: Temp Temporary Internet Files NTUSER.DAT NTUSER.DAT.LOG *.dat *.tmp *.DAT.log *.ost *.pst The command i typed under Auxiliary Parameters (Rsyncd Global Conf under services)is as follows: exclude from = /mnt/Storage/User_Profiles/exclude.txt Ive tried deleting the .DAT files from the receiving end and just as i start to get excited i click refresh and there they are again

• Seasgate GoFlex NAS + Horrible Speed = Bad Experience

  I am having issues with transfer speeds from my desktop PC to my NAS. I have my NAS hooked up to a Gigabit Gateway as well as my Desktop with Cat 5e. I see up to 4.0 MB/Second Transfer Rates, the normal is about 2.5 MB/Seconds. There is 3 Partitions on my NAS, Public, Private, Backup. When I transfer from Private to Public I see the speeds above. If its under the same partition almost instant. I was wondering if the speeds I am seeing is in due to my Computer or the NAS. I was looking into building my own Media Server in due to these horrible speeds. Is their anything I can do in the mean time to speed this up? • FDE with DiskCryptor V1 (TRIM Support) on Crucial M4 SSD on W7 x64 - Unpartitioned Space?

  I have a new Alienware m11 laptop with a brand new Crucial M4 128GB SSD. I have installed the SSD but not used it yet. I am thinking of using FDE with DiskCryptor 1.0.732.111. I will install Win7 Pro x64. I have read about support for TRIM in v1.0.732.111 but also about leaving unpartitioned space. My SSD drive, 'Crucual M4' does not have a manufacturer built-in reserve like other drives. My questions are: Should I leave some free unpartitioned space with v1 of DC and W7x64 even though it will support TRIM or should I not do this? Should I install DC v1 first or after installing Windows 7 (assuming it is brand new, never been used SSD)?

• Massive amount of subfolders and long subfolders. ¿How can I delete all of them?

  Good day. We have a little problem here. We have a share with the backup of all the server's offices, Its a really big share with more than 8.000.000 files. Our users usually give long names to the folders they create, and then make subfolders (long too) and more subfolders... and more suboflders.... We have a new share with more capacity, and with a simpe robocopy bat we copied all the files and folders (some give problems, but we manually copied them) But the problem is deleting them. del command didnt work well when so long paths, neirder rmdir... I'm tried some commanders, but no luck. Can u recommend me any tool that can delete recursively or able to delete 255+ paths? Edited: The SO on background of the share it's NetApp OS. But I can access it from Windows Servers. 2000 and 2003 Thanks.

• Resizing mysterious partition written by DDing an ISO file

  I downloaded clonezilla and then wrote it to a USB flash drive with this: dd if=clonezilla.iso of=/dev/sdb I've confirmed that the system boots and clonezilla runs from the flash drive. I want to store a clonezilla backup on the same flash drive clonezilla is running on, but I tried it and ran out of space, so I started looking at how to resize the mysterious partition type that was generated from the ISO. fdisk -l /dev/sdb .... Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 1 111 113664 17 Hidden HPFS/NTFS .... I've tried using ntfsresize from the Debian ntfsprogs package. I'm trying gparted next, but thought I'd ask here if anyone knows a neat way to resize a partition created on flash from a liveCD image. Thanks in advance Jon ps. Assume Debian 6 please.

• How to change the amount of RAM displayed in System Properties

  I have this product that requires at least 1 GB Physical Memory in order to be installed. On my XP Pro machine I have 1 GB of RAM but in System Properties only 0.99 GB of RAM is displayed. The problem is that the product installer checks the memory displayed in System Properties (just a guess, not sure) and cannot continue the setup because it sees only 0.99 GB. Is there any way to change the displayed memory in the System Properties? Or how can I trick the installer to skip the memory check? Thanks.

• Large temp files created in Windows Server 2003 temp folder

  I'm managing a Windows Server 2003 with around 30 GB space in primary partition. A couple of times the server has crashed with error message saying that the C: drive is full. After searching folders to free up space, I found that lot of temp files being created in C:\WINNT\Temp and some of them of enormous size with more than 2GB. The temp files have common name, Efs###.tmp. Since we encrypt files frequently using Windows's EFS, I initially suspected Windows encryption. But after reading the documentation, I found that Efs###.tmp are in fact created by EFS but they are created only under the folder which you're currently encrypting, not in Temp folder. This looks very strange since Efs##.tmp files shouldn't be created under C:\WINNT\Temp unless someone tried to encrypt that Temp folder itself. The server has Tivoli Backup client. Could that be messing with windows Encryption? Can anyone shed some light on what could be causing the issue?

• VMware Server guest systems are extremely slow with IO load on host (Ubuntu 8.04)

  We are experiencing performance issues with a VMware Server 2.x installation on an Ubuntu 8.04 host. When the host system is generating IO load (for example, copying large files as part of a backup operation), the guests (also Ubuntu 8.04) become extremely unresponsive and slow (simple Apache HTTP requests taking 5 seconds instead of the usual 200ms). We tried optimizing various aspects of the VMs, but the issue remains. Is there a known bug with VMware performance under linux if host IO load is high? Is there a way to fix this? Is this only an issue with Ubuntu systems, or have you seen it on other systems before? Thanks!

• How to create an UEFI bootable USB stick from an ISO

  I have an ISO image of my backup solution's recovery cd. When I burn the image to a CD-ROM, I can boot from it in UEFI or normal mode without problems. Unfortunately, this is no solution for my laptop, as it does not have an optical drive. Thus, I tried to create a bootable USB stick that can also boot in UEFI mode, but so far I have not been successful (note that the laptop has UEFI and boots Windows 7 in UEFI mode). So my question is, if anyone knows how I can get said ISO on my USB stick so that it boots as if I would use a CD-ROM?

• Can I import contacts from an Exchange 2003 EDB file for a single user?

  We have recently had to reinstall a very unhappy Exchange 2003 server for a client, and whilst rebuilding their server we moved them onto a temporary one. During the course of all this, ExMerge was used due to Windows being so broken that none of the backup software could run. As a number of the user mailboxes were way over 2GB, we had to do date ranges of a few months at a time to avoid ExMerge's 2GB limit. We went back as far as 2006, as the files produced by ExMerge seemed empty that far back. Unfortunately, one of the users has reported that around 2 3rds of their contacts are missing, and that pre-2006 sounds about right for the missing items. Is there any way I can mount the old EDB file into Exchange, or otherwise read their contacts into a usable format? The server is running Windows Server 2003 SBS R2 (SP2), and Exchance 2003 (SP2, I think).
