• What may be the reason of "hide inactive icons" option of WinXP systray to stop working?

  Yesterday I've set up Defraggler (I've used it before many times) to defragment my hard drives and turn off my laptop when it finishes. I haven§t installed/uninstalled/reconfigured anything that day. When I've then turned the laptop on, I've got taskbar's "quick launch" area disappeared and all and every system tray (notification area) icons displayed (and the arrow-in-a-bubble usually folding to hide most of them gone). I've then successfully turned on "show quick launch" option, but "hide inactive icons" was already on. I've turned it off, applied, closed "taskbar and start menu properties", then opened again to turn the option back on, applied, restarted, nothing changes. Now I have to have all the system tray icons always displayed. Any ideas what may the reason be and how to fix? The OS is Windows XP Pro SP3 with all the updates.

• How to highlight full row in GNU screen

  I have a mac pro and now I am trying to use GNU screen instead of terminal. When I need to look at the log the I hit Ctrl A [ and I get into copy mode. However it is really hard to detect where my cursor is since it is of color red and it is underscore. Is it possible to get the cursor in a block form in copy mode. Or highlight the whole row. Any stronger visual indication of where my cursor is in copy mode would be of help. Thanks

• ARR servers in the Load Balancing pool automatically go from unavailable to available

  I have 3 IIS web servers in an ARR web farm. When we do rolling releases, we take one server offline as a backup server and move it into an "Unavailable State" I have noticed that with ARR, servers will not stay in this state...they come back online automatically hours or days later. Does anyone know how to remedy this situation? This is very bad as the server that is down is typically not running the correct version of our code. I need to keep a server unavailable until i tell it otherwise.

  A common practice is to use non-preallocated virtual disks. Since they only grow as needed, it makes them perfect for fast backup, overallocation and creation speed. Since file systems are usually based on physical disks they have the tendency to use the whole area available1 in order to increase the speed2 or reliability3. I'm searching a filesystem that does the exact opposite : try to touch the minimum blocks need by an aggressive block reuse. I would happily trade some performance for space usage. There is already a similar question, but it is rather general. I have very specific goal : space-efficiency. 1. Like page caching uses all the free physical memory 2. • NAT Error Message - Usage limit exceeded

  Trying to configure a port to use for Vuze. Using the NAT/server port test, I was getting a message saying the connection timed out, the port was probably closed. I went back and made sure to open the specific port on my router, firewall, etc, but now I'm getting "NAT Error - Usage limit exceeded (173.32.41.24:0). I'm on a mac pro running leopard, trial versions of intego netbarrier and virusbarrier. Network utilities and netbarrier both claim the port is open. I've tested a bunch of other ports, but all give the same message.

• Is there still a place for tape storage?

  We've backed up our data on LTO tapes for years and it's a real comfort to know we have everything on tape. A sister project and one of our data providers have both moved to 100% disk storage because the cost of disk has dropped so much. When we propose systems to potential customers these days we tend to downplay or not mention our use of tape systems for data storage since it might seem outdated. I feel more comfortable with having data saved in two separate formats: disks and tape. In addition, once data is securely written to tape, I feel (perhaps naively) that it's been permanently saved. Not having to rely on a RAID controller to be able to read back data is another plus for me. Do you see a place for tape backup these days?

  My real question here is... is there a tool I can use? (E.g. I have a lot to do, and would prefer not to script it all up myself!) Anyone using the redgate (hmmm, they had a tool for this, but I do not see it on their web site now...) I have a primary web app at rackspace. • prevent use of 'net user' command to change passwords on windows vista / xp

  hello the point is, if i'm logged in (and as almost every windows user, i've got an admin-account), and someone comes across my not locked pc, it is possible to change my password the pro-way through using: net user Admin %NEW_PASSWD% what can i do to prevent that, besides not being logged in as admin. i once saw a way, where the 'net user' command was substituted by a .bat file. so if you call 'net user Admin ...', it runs this .bat-file instead, which locks the notebook immediately. problem is, i honestly don't know how i could let windows substitute eg net.exe with a .bat-file. (too little windows knowledge) do you know any way how to do it? i'd appreciate it.

  Hi there I'm trying to make a backup/copy of my virtual machine, it's installed in a Windows Server 2000 and I want to make some modifications/tests without changing the original one. The copy is to be used in Windows 7, what I'm trying to do is work/modify an application that communicates with a DB, this application is hosted on the VM, the DB too, and since I don't want to screw up the stable version I want to know how to copy the VM to my desktop pc to experiment without worries. Now, someone told me I might have problems with the IP 'cause the original will have the same IP, and if I change it, it won't work properly. Is this true? If it is indeed true, any suggestions??

• Apps not starting on Mac OS X Lion

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses. • Mouse(s) double clicks instead of single click (its not the mouse)

  I am aware of this very similar question: But I have tried with 3 different mouses and everyone of them exibit the same behavior. Simple enough, 1 out of 3 times I get a double click when single clicking). I searched the net a lot about this problem and have yet to find a solution. I have tried: 1- switch to another mouse 2- uninstall the mouse drivers + reboot 3- I do not have any special mouse drivers/software like intellisense and logitecs to uninstall. 4- verified that I was not in fact on some setting that says open files with single click. 5- everything is up to date including a antivirus 6- Installed fresh drivers from dell's website It is a dell vostro 260 computer running windows 7 pro 64. edit: added a 6th thing I tried. edit2: tried reinstalling every windows update I could find nothing Boss just said he'd buy me a logitech mouse hoping the drivers will fix my problems.   What is the best, most foolproof way of getting nice font rendering in Linux? Currently, I am experiencing thin, ugly fonts (shown below). I have wasted too much time tweaking fonts.conf, and I have yet to find a decent combination. I am running Debian 6.0 with no desktop environment (just Openbox for a window manager) in a VM on a Macbook Pro (OS X 10.7.4). • Why would Remote Assistance work but not Remote Desktop?

  I have managed to get Remote Assistance working between two XP-Pro machines, but as soon as I try Remote Desktop I can't even get to the login screen without an error which gives a list of possibilities and concludes with "See your network administrator", which isn't very helpful. I have ramped up the security level on Remote Desktop including turning on encryption etc. Could this be the problem? I will only get a few hours on the machine at a time so I need to be well-prepared before I attack this problem again. Any ideas?

• Do I need to disable access to a publisher database when setting up SQL Server 2000 Transactional Re

  I have a production database i.e. where there are constant updates and I've configured this to be published to another server using Transactional Replication. When I configure transactional replication I've been doing the following: disable access to the source database backup source DB then restore to subscription server configure replication re-enable DB access to our apps The problem with this approach is scheduling in downtime, having to suspend all the various timed scheduled tasks we run and shutting down access to our various applications that are dependant on this database. Can I just configure transactional replication without disabling access to the publishing database and the subscriber database will correctly catch up? i.e. are all the DML statements queued on the publisher and as soon as the subscriber is ready they are picked off and executed?

• how to force 1440x900 resolution on acer al1702w lcd monitor

  i have acer al1702w lcd monitor in my office.. somehow i restarted the system using the reset button as the os stoped responding.. since then the 1440x900 resolution option in the display settings is not appearing.. the intel graphocs is 82945G... and as always the h/w guys at the office are of no help.. they start blurting out their theories that this the best resolution... even though i show them that the max resolution for the monitor is indeed 1440x900.. and its not that the 82945g cant handle it... as it was working before.. i installed the latest drivers for this graphics but still im not finding that option... how to force 1440x900 resolution... oh tes the os ix xp pro sp2 Thanks..

• USB AutoRun Dialog: Open a webpage option not shown in dialog

  I am attempting to make our webpage open when someone plugs in our USB device. My Problem: When we plug in the USB device the autorun dialog appears but there is never an option to open/run the webpage we have specified. See below pic of the dialog we see. Isn't there meant to be an option that says something like "Open in Internet Explorer" or etc.? What we are hoping to achieve is to have another option below 'Use this drive for backup' that says something like 'Open in Web Browser' or something that will ultimately open our webpage when the users decides to. • Exited Emacs without saving, did it save the file somewhere?

  Hi, I am using Emacs on Windows XP. Had it open to take some notes in a meeting, but forgot to create a file first (the text got created in the usual "scratch" buffer). Then I closed a lot of applications after the meeting, forgetting to save the notes in Emacs :( I know that when I am modifying an existing file, it creates a backup of the old file in the same directory. But I don't know if the information from the scratch buffer is available somewhere after an exit without saving. Do you know if I can restore my information? I haven't shut down/suspended/hybernated the system since, so all temp files should be still accessible.

• Load images in parallel - supported by browser or a feature to implement?

  Hi all: I am not a pro in web development and Apache server still remains a mystery to me. we've got a project which runs on LAMP, pretty much like all the commercial hosting plans. I am confused about one problem : does modern browsers support image loading in parallel? or this requires some special feature/config set up from server side? Can this be done with PHP coding or by some server-side configuration? Is a special content delivery networking needed for this? The benchmark demonstration will be the flickr website. I am too suprised to see how all image thumbnails are loaded in a short time after a search as if there were only one image to load. • Corrupted file, hard drive test?

  Hi guys, I'm currently on a macbook with a 1TB external hard drive connected trough a USB hub wich is connected on my macbook. The problem is, my disk, wich is partitioned in 2 (one HFS+ and one NTFS) keeps getting corrupted, recently it was my HFS+ partition, I could not repair it using the Apple's Disk utility, but was able to backup my files. Is it synonym that my hard drive is failing? Is it because of my USB hub? I also keep all my iTunes library on my external HD (HFS+ partition), and did a lot of transfer lately, adding files, removing etc. the last time, my partition got corrupted after a lot of deleted items. If anybody has an idea of what to check first, what could cause the problem, I would appreciate it :) Thanks!

  I use carbonite to back up my PC (Windows XP). We were running low on disk space on our home PC (down to 15 gig) so I went out and purchased an external hard drive. However, Carbonite will not back it up. I just want the external drive to be extra disk space. From their FAQ: The current version of Carbonite backs up only the files that reside on permanent hard drives on your computer. It will not back up network drives, external drives, and NAS (network accessed storage) drives. If there are files on a remote drive that you wish to include in your Carbonite backup, you should copy the files to a folder on your local hard drive. If the files are on a shared network drive, you could install Carbonite on the computer on which the network shared drive physically exists, and back the files up directly from that computer. Check back soon for a Carbonite service plan that will allow you to back up your external drives.

• How do I share my iPhoto photos with my ubuntu partition?

  I have a MacBook Pro dual-booted with Snow Leopard and Ubuntu Karmic. I have recently imported hundreds of my photos into iPhoto - but I now want to be able to see them (and use them as desktop/screen saver images) from my Ubuntu partition (ie when the machine is running Ubuntu instead of MacOS). Is there an easy way to do this direct from the iPhoto library or do I have to shift them all out to an external file directory or something? Further edit - just to make it clear: I have already uploaded my photos directly into iPhoto - then spent many days categorising, tagging and uploading to flickr. Unless there's something I'm missing, I'm guessing it's likely too late to do the "don't copy into the iPhoto library" option. Happy to be proven wrong :) Perhaps somebody knows of a way to "export" the library without losing any of the current information - so that I can (from then on) keep the photos in an external library? I don't want to do this, though, if I lose the information that is currently there.

• How Can I Set the OS X Dock to Show Instantly Instead of Waiting Half a Second in Snow Leopard?

  Having a MacBook Pro 13" I find myself trying to maximize the screen real estate constantly which have led me to put the dock at the right hand corner of the screen. Now in an attempt to save a few more pixels I decided to give autohiding of the dock a go and ran into a problem that have plagued me all night... When you toggle the switch to automatically hide the dock you get stuck with a small delay before it appears when hovering the edge of the screen. I have learnt that this is one of the many design principles Apple have put in use. In this case it appears to be their mission to save me from seeing the dock those few times when it's not intentional to touch the screens edge. In Windows there was a way to tweak this setting to have the menubar appear instantly by altering some registry value. Is there some way I can do this in Mac OS X?

• Apache Upgrade Version

  I have a live server that I need to upgrade Apache from 2.2.10 to 2.2.15 on Windows Server 2003. I have just inherited this server and need the fastest way to upgrade to the latest stable version without much downtime and without messing up my configuration. My first thought is to copy the httpd.conf, uninstall the current Apache, install the latest stable Apache version and then replace the httpd.conf with the previous live version. Anyone see a problem or pitfall with that? How does a Server Pro do something like this. (I'm a programmer and am new to server systems administration).
