• IPsec Policy Agent flip-flopping demand start/auto start in Windows Server 2008?

  Looking through the event logs on my web server I noticed a strange pattern. The following events have been occurring over and over again, always back to back: The start type of the IPsec Policy Agent service was changed from demand start to auto start. The start type of the IPsec Policy Agent service was changed from auto start to demand start. Each one produces event id 7040 from the Service Control Manager. And sometimes this will happen 20 times in one minute. Any idea what would cause this? I've been trying to pinpoint an intermittent performance problem for the past several days and this is the most peculiar thing I've found so far. I'm running Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, and ASP.NET 3.5 w/ MVC 1.

• Optimal Memory Configuration for Dell PowerEdge 1800 (Windows Server 2000 32bit)

  I am upgrading the memory on a Dell PowerEdge 1800 Server running Windows Server 2000 (32 bit). My Computer Properties currently reports "2,096,432 KB RAM" (4 modules @ 512MB each). Crucial.com scan reports: "Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 2GB per slot. Maximum Memory Capacity:  12288MB Currently Installed Memory:  2GB Available Memory Slots:  2 Total Memory Slots:  6 Dual Channel Support:   No CPU Manufacturer:  GenuineIntel CPU Family:  Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz Model 4, Stepping 1 CPU Speed:  2793 MHz Installed in pairs of modules." We will be completely replacing the old 512 MB modules. Will there be any performance difference between installing 4 modules @ 1GB vs. 2 modules @ 2GB?

• Does anybody wish to help a poor researcher publish a paper?

  I don't know if this is a good place to beg for help, but here it goes: basically, I need to run a secure recommender system simulation (C++ console application) in order to meet tonight's deadline, and the faculty's server grid decided to go offline. I could really use something like 10+ (actually, about 16 would be required to meet the deadline) virtual instances of some Linux that has GMP installed... Ideally, they should all have the same specs, because a part of the simulation will represent performance benchmarks. If my question is inappropriate in any way, I kindly ask the administrators to remove it.

• RAID0 array of USB 2 disks, both connected to a single hub. Any benefit?

  I have two unused USB 2 drives. I wanted to stripe them in a RAID0 configuration for fast disk access for virtual machines. (I find running a VMware virtual machine off a USB2 drive to be painfully slow. Especially Windows Vista) If I have both USB drives attached to the same USB2 hub, will that negate any benefit I gain by creating a RAID0 array? That is to say, is the speed of USB2 the limiting factor or is the speed of the drives? Would I get better performance by attaching one or both drives directly to my computer?

• What software can I use to pinpoint why Windows Server 2003 takes 15 seconds for any operation?

  Ram is about 1/2 in use, four CPUs are all but idle. I tried "Microsoft Server Performance Advisor" with no luck. No entries in the Event Log for hardware failures, etc. And yet I can click on the start menu and wait 15 seconds for any new attempt. Launching software takes 30 seconds to respond. The server has an 8 drive WD RE 250 gig each Dell Perc 6 Sata raid array with Intel gigabit network cards. Anyone have any software titles that could analyze what is going wrong with this server?

• Remote Desktop not following display settings

  I have my RDP client set up to use highest settings for connecting to another PC on my LAN, which has display settings 1280x1024x32bit. RDP is specifically set to use 32bit depth, but when I connect it drops to 16bit. The PC I connect to is (amongst other things) used to do some 3D graphics. I don't expect great performance, just to check it works... but it doesn't over RDP, the 3D app doesn't think the hardware is the same. Does RDP's integration with Windows mean it is providing some virtualised rendering system? Should I use something less 'clever' like VNC, to literally screen-grab the contents of the screen without altering the settings?

• TCP Tweaking options and Results: Any suggestions?

  I first tried with the default windows XP TCP option(It doesn't have TCPWindowSize option and TCP1323 in its Registry setting). I dynamically set those options using TCP optimizer. Here I list out the result with and without TCP Tweaking option. I see no major improvements in TCP after increasing window size optimally too. What value should I set to increase the performance? • What's the best solution for file sharing in my case? DAS or NAS?

  I want to have in my network small, cheap and energy efficient server with will be fully customizable (Gnu/Linux, OpenBSD). What is more I want to have big, redundant storage in my network and access to it via server. I have already small terminal without hard drive (no SATA/PATA, one drive on USB) which works fine. I don't want to buy big server, or to use regular computer for that. It's not cheap. I thought about a small case (ITX?), and cheap computer in this with SATA ports, but I cannot find anything interesting :( I thought about NAS in network and server independently and booting server from NAS, I'm not sure which technologies will be good for that, and I don't know what with performance. Direct connection to NAS through network from workstation is next pro for that. What do you think about DAS? It will be good for that?

• Where Catalyst stores applist for switchable graphics?

  I cannot add an app to the list to manually set it to high performance (Radeon instead of Intel HD). When I browse for an exe, nothing happens, the list is still empty. So, maybe I can edit some .cfg or .ini? UPDATE This is NOT my screenshot... actually I've found it on the Net. The list with iexplore.exe is what I meant. When I click 'Browse' and choose any exe (Portal2.exe, for instance) nothing happens. The list is empty, so I cannot set mode for Portal2.exe.

• How to make IIS7 stop adding etag to response headers?

  For performance reasons, I'm using expire headers for static files (adding long expiration periods like 50 years or so). Now I'm trying to get rid of etag headers which are automatically added by IIS7. I've done some searching but it seems harder than what I thought (there doesn't seem to be a straight forward way). I found some workarounds but they all use httpmodules (which I'm keeping as a last resort). I strongly prefer to not get the etag header added in the first place. Did anyone manage to do this? • Experiences using VLC for video-on-demand streaming? (VLM)

  I'm considering my options for implementing a VOD service. Until recently my choices seemed to be either Wowza or Darwin, but now I discovered VLM, which looks really cool. I am going to stream MPEG4 H.264 video with AAC audio. I'm probably going to use the RTSP protocol, but I'm willing to use HTTP as well (after reading this article). Can anyone comment on his or her experiences with VLM? How does it compare to Darwin or Wowza? Is it stable and worthy of production use? Are there any limitations or performance problems?

  Hey guys, could please anybody recommend some kind of kconfig generator that would trim modules and built-in stuff that is not needed according to current hardware ? The best I have found is this : http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/9/16/290 I don't care about compilation time and the amount of modules that are not built-in. I'm concerned about performance. I don't know how much memory and runtime is wasted on huge kernels with almost everything possible. I'm a java developer and I don't know what most of the modules and drivers are for. • MacBook Pro - 72k vs 54k rpm drives - Heat and Noise

  I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 54000 rpm drive to a 72000 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 72000 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 54000 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think? • Switching from Windows Virtual PC to VirtualBox without formatting

  I have a Win7 virtual machine running on Windows Virtual PC where I'm currently developing. I found that I dislike WVPC, and installed VirtualBox, hoping for better performance. However, importing the existing VHD into a new VM seems to not work, because even if I see the Windows boot screen, the OS will crash on a BSOD and requires the restore tool to run. That tool finds no problem, reboots but the BSOD is still present. I wouldn't like to format a new VM if possible. Is it possible to do such switching?

• What's the best external hard drive configuration for a software developer laptop?

  I've got a Dell laptop that I use as a software developer box at work and find that the drive is usually the bottleneck. I'd like to hook up two 10k RPM drives that are striped for performance. I've looked for drive cases with RAID but there don't seem to be very many choices and I'm worried about compatibility with the drives (preferably SATA 2). Also I don't have a SATA connection on my machine so it'll have to USB 2.0 for now. Am I headed down the right path or am I missing a much simpler configuration?

  I want to maximize the throughput of a data transfer between two servers. The copy will be made at the application layer using Robocopy. To clear things up, please check my Visio schema of the network: FS1---------(SW1)===========(SW2)--------- FS2 SW1 to SW2 is connected through 10 gigabit Fiber Channel ethernet FS1 to SW1 is connected through 1 gigabit ethernet FS2 to SW2 is connected through 1 gigabit ethernet I first idea I've come up with is to use LACP, so I could use two Gigabit Ethernet between each server and the switch. A collegue told me that LACP is for availability and not performance, so he reckon this solution will not work. Is he right? Do I have other options? Thank you very much

  Hi, We're migrating an existing IIS website + MS SQL 2005 database (on the same server) to a new test set-up. The existing set-up is too slow. I want one ISS server and 2 X MS SQL server 2005. One live DB server for the website queries (inserts, updates) and another for backups, reports or stored procedures. So the live DB should be more aimed at performance. The other doesn't even need to be synced instantly. What is the best way in SQL server 2005 to set this up. Can somebody point me in the right direction and give me some pointers. Thanks

  I'm about to go choose a dual monitor setup: 1) Is there any reason why I can't just walk out and buy the two TFT screens I like (a wide screen and a 'portrait' screen) and combine them? Mainly wide screen would be for gaming, and portrait for browsing. I'd want the desktop stretching from one to the other (ie drag pointer, apps from one screen to the other) 2) Also do I need separate gfx cards for each monitor or can one cover both? any performance cost? 3) And can I have separate background images for each, seeing as they'll be different resolutions?

  I am trying to improve performance on my server. I have a few processes that need low jitter (less than 10ms variance). I have a load average of 4 maximum on an i7-920 (4 physical cores, 8 with HT). There are about 10 processes ranging from 40% to 90% of a core user mode. System usage is 3% total. Total CPU usage is 80% max. Will setting the kernel from 100hz to 1000hz improve the jitter if tickless and high resolution timers are already set?   I have to connect two LANs: LAN1: 10.10.0.0/16 and LAN2: 192.168.0.0/16. I can't do simple routing, because 192.168.0.0/16 net is prohibited in LAN1, so I am thinking of using Full cone nat (1:1) to translate 192.168.x.y/16 to 10.11.x.y/16. Each translation is done by this rules: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d 10.11.0.0/16 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.0.0/16 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/16 -j SNAT --to-source 10.11.0.0/16 But I will have to enter 254*254*2 rules, what will, I think, result in enormous performance degradation. So, is there a way to write such one-to-one translation with minimum number of rules?

• How to re-do the hard disks in a WD Word Book Edition II ?

  I recently purchased a WD World Book II, a 2 TB one. I call it the "White Box". It has those 2 1TB drives, and they were in this RAID 1 config, only giving me about 1 TB. I could not delete the raid array, and I took the drives in a Linux box. But I also deleted the entire partitions of the disks, and I cannot even et the existing RAID array on this WD White Box. The drives are fine, but I cannot get them to work on the WD White Box. My goal was to get back to a real 2 TB storage space. If I cannot get those drives back in the White Box, I can re-use them elsewhere, but this would mean a waste of the firmware and network connection. After the fact, I read that, anyway, the network performance is rather poor. Thanks :-)
