• XNA 4.0 2D sidescroller variable terrain heightmap for walking/collision

  I've been fooling around with moving on sloped tiles in XNA and it is semi-working but not completely satisfactory. I also have been thinking that having sets of predetermined slopes might not give me terrain that looks "organic" enough. There is also the problem of having to construct several different types of tile for each slope when they're chained together (only 45 degree tiles will chain perfectly as I understand it). I had thought of somehow scanning for connected chains of sloped tiles and treating it as a new large triangle, as I was having trouble with glitching at the edges where sloped tiles connect. But, this leads back to the problem of limiting the curvature of the terrain. So...what I'd like to do now is create a simple image or texture of the terrain of a level (or section of the level) and generate a simple heightmap (of the Y's for each X) for the terrain. The player's Y position would then just be updated based on their X position. Is there a simple way of doing this (or a better way of solving this problem)? The main problem I can see with this method is the case where there are areas above the ground that can be walked on. Maybe there is a way to just map all walkable ground areas? • Checking whether product key will work with SBS 2003

  We've recently absorbed a small company who had a Dell PowerEdge server running SBS 2003. For some reason, the hard disks have been wiped. We have the product key though from the sticker on the side of the case but not the installation media: Win SBS Std 2003 1-2 CPU 5-CAL OEM software We do have a Dell labelled set of four CDs labelled SBS 2003 in our store and I've built a VM from this media but it doesn't prompt for the product key during install. Is there any way to ascertain whether this media will work with this product key without going through activation? I know one can activate several times but would prefer to check we've got the right media before doing this. Thanks, Rob.

• Unidirectional synchronization and admin back-end

  I have Wordpress installation on two web nodes (load balancing/failover). There is unidirectional synchronization from server A to server B so any updates must occur on the first web node. I have a problem with Wordpress admin side. I'm using Nginx and the initial plan was to create rewrite rule from domain.com/wp-admin to wpadmin.domain.com - pointing to the first node. The problem is that the Wordpress installation can be access only via main domain and without extra subdomain there is no distinction between both web servers for the rewrite rule. Could you please advise if there is any other solution in this case. Regards

• Should I stay in my degree or take an opportunity for management experience?

  I've read a couple other post along these lines and they've been helpful but I'm wondering if my case is any different. I've been working towards my CS degree while working part time in a programming job. I'm now about two years away from getting my degree and was just offered a management position at my job. This would mean that I have to work full-time at my job and I can't really work towards my degree anymore in person. My school doesn't really offer CS classes after hours nor online. It seems that getting a degree is very important from the other post that I read. Does having management experience trump that? I'm currently leaning towards taking the job and finding some sort of online degree. Also my school only offers a business degree online, could I just get this in place. Does the type of degree really matter? For some jobs it's not the type of degree just that you have one, is there any merit for this in the programming industry? Thanks :)

  Is it possible to run Windows Store apps in a window on the desktop in Windows 8? For example, I think the Finance app is awesome, I just don't want it to occupy dedicated space on my screen (either taking the full screen, or snapped to the side). It would be great if I could run it in a window on my desktop. Is this possible? I'm think developers need to view/run/build their apps in a desktop window in order to work productively. Is this the case?

• Eclipse: open file in external editor only temporarily

  Using Eclipse, I can open a Java source file with an external editor by right-clicking on the file name (in the Package Explorer) and selecting Open With ... - emacsclient. I'm very glad to be able to do that. However, I only want to do that sometimes, not every time. Now, when I double-click on that same file name, I always automatically get the file opened in emacsclient. This is particularly annoying when I use the Open Type dialog to find a file, because in that case it's not possible to right-click and choose the default Eclipse editor. Is there a way to make Eclipse forget that I previously opened a particular file with emacsclient, so that it can go back to the default behavior of using the regular Eclipse editor?

  In its description of valid tcpdump expressions, the pcap-filter man pages state: The filter expression consists of one or more primitives. Primitives usually consist of an id (name or number) preceded by one or more qualifiers. In turn, these qualifiers are type, dir and proto. So far so good, but further down we find this: ip host host which is equivalent to: ether proto \ip and host host In the first case, ip and host are, respectively, proto and type. What pattern does ether proto \ip follow? Isn't that, as a whole, a proto qualifier? If so, why isn't (a properly escaped) 'ether proto \ip host host' legal (no and)?

  Hi all! Today we would like to introduce you just another feature from upcoming NetBeans 7.3. It's about generating setters, constructors and type hints of their parameters. For years, you can use Insert Code action to generate setters, getters, constructors and such. Nothing new. But from NetBeans 7.3 you can generate Fluent Setters! What does it mean? Simply that $this is returned from a generated setter. This is how it looks like: But that's not everything :) As you know, before a method is generated, you have to choose a field, which will be associated with that method (in case of constructors, you choose fileds which should be initialized by that constructor). And from NetBeans 7.3, type hints are generated automatically for these parameters! But only if a proper PHPDoc is used in a corresponding field declaration, of course. Here is how it looks like. • Custom daemon script: works, but does not run at boot / startup

  this is Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. I have the following shell script in init.d that I want to run as a "daemon" (background service with start/stop/restart really) at system startup. There is a symlink in rc3.d. I tried 4 and 5 too. (Ideally this would initialize before graphical login happens and before a user logs in.) IMPORTANT: the script works 100% as expected and required when testing this with service MetaLeapDaemon start and service MetaLeapDaemon stop. (This shell script calls a Python program which makes sure the appropriate .pid files are both created at startup and deleted at exit.) So generally it works fine but now my only issue is why it will not be run at any of the run-levels I tried. I know for sure it isn't run because the log file it normally creates does not get created. As you can see (by the lack of any uid:gid args in the start-stop-daemon commands) this would currently run only under root, is this forbidden in a default setup? • Using template questions in a technical interview

  I've recently been in an argument with a colleage about technical questions in interviews. As a graduate, I went round lots of companies and noticed they used the same questions. An example is "Can you write a function that determines if a number is prime or not?", 4 years later, I find that particular question is quite common even for a junior developer. I might not be looking at this the correct way, but shouldn't software houses be intelligent enought to think up their own interview questions. This may well be the case, but I've been to about 16 interviews as a graduate and the same questions came up in about 75% of them. This leads me to believe that many companies are lazy and simply Google: 'Template questions for interviewing software developers' and I kind of look down on that. Question: Is it better to use a sest of questions off some template or should software houses strive to be more original and come up with their own interview material? From my point of view, if I failed an inteview and went off and looked for good answers to the questions I messed up on, I could fly through the next interview if they questions are the same.

• Automatic LaTex document generation from Excel spreadsheet

  I have some data in an excel file from which I have to generate a report. I repeat this task fairly regularly and am looking to automate it. I have a LaTeX project into which I usually just copy data by hand, export the necessary worksheets as pdfs and add them to my LaTeX project and compile with pdflatex. It has occured to me that there must be a way to automate this process. Is there an efficient way to export the data from excel and into a LaTeX project, possibly a vba script in excel could run the process? Also, it doesn't have to be LaTeX, I'm not all that experienced with MS office's more advanced features is there some way akin to a mail merge that I could achieve this with? In some ways this might be better in case I have to pass the work on to someone who doesn't know LaTeX. Thanks.

• Virtual Machine files on ramdisk doesn't run faster than on physical disk

  I installed total 36G memory (4x8G + 2x2G) in the host (Windows 7) and I used ImDisk to create a 32G ramdisk and format it to NTFS file system. Then I copied the virtual machine (in VMware Workstation format) folder, including vmx, vmdk, etc... to the new created ram disk. Then I tried to power on it in VMware Workstation. What made me surprised is that the performance is not better than before. It cost almost the same time to power on the Windows 7 VM. I check the Resource Monitor in the Windows 7 host, and the statistics of CPU, disk, network are rather normal. The memory has reported 3000+ hard fault/sec when guest OS boot then drop to 0 after the guest powered on. Any idea about this issue? I had thought the performance of ramdisk will be better than physical disk in this case. Am I wrong? Thanks.

• PHP file gets download instead of getting executed when browsed in any browser

  I have a phpinfo.php file which I am trying to run by browsing to it using browser but the browser downloads the file instead of executing it. phpinfo.php <?php phpinfo(); ?> I followed following this post, added following lines to my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and restarted apache but invain. phpinfo.php still gets downloaded. AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps Have I added these line to the correct file? On an openSuSE forum following was mentioned. I followed this too but still no success. Same problem is persisting. In case the browser wants to save your php files instead of displaying the content, you should enable php support in the /etc/apache2/mod_userdir.conf file. Add the following line to it, just after the line and restart the server. Include /etc/apache2/conf.d/php5.conf

  Hey, I am about to purchase a domain name for a bit of money. I do not personally know the person who I am purchasing the domain name from, we have only chatted via email. The proposed process for the transfer is: The owner of the domain lowest the domain name security and emails me the domain password, I request the transfer After the request, I transfer the money via PayPal When the money has been cleared the current domain name owner confirms the transfer via the link that he receives in that email I wait for it to be transferred. The domain is currently registered with DirectNIC - http://www.directnic.com/ Is this the best practice? Seeing I am paying a bit of money for this domain name, I am worried that after the money has been cleared that I won't see the domain name or hear from the current domain name owner again. Is there a 'domain governing body' which I can report to if this is the case? Is the proposed transfer process the best solution? Any advice would be awesome. Thanks! Jack

• fdisk (linux) partitioning raid0

  'm trying to create partitions for a slackware instalation on my computer (beside Windows 7) just to have a nice distro running mostly for school but when I run fdisk and print the partitiontable I get the following message: Partition x does not end on cylinder boundary. (in my case x = 1, just using x to help googlers). I must say I'm using a raid card (AMCC 3ware 9500S SATA RAID Controller). Maybe this is the problem. How can I fix this without loosing any data? (I've posted this qeustion on stack overflow aswell but then people sugjested it should be moved to here, but I don't know how to move my question so I just posted it here manually (I hope that's ok))

• Disable CD eject button on Windows laptop

  Most laptops have a CD eject that is very sensitive, and placed such that it regularly gets triggered when handling the laptop. This is in particular a problem (for clumsy-handed me) when picking up the laptop to stow in in a laptop bag; I've lost count of the number of times it has ejected just as I am lowering it into the case! I rarely use a CD, but I am wondering whether some crafty software hack (or other trick) might be possible to make it less vulnerable. Perhaps trying to fool it into thinking it is busy (but ideally without destroying my battery). Otherwise, I might as well bow to the inevitable and snap the darned thing off. I'm not making this brand-specific, as I've seen this problem on a range of both branded and re-badged laptops. I am, however, mainly interested in windows-friendly solutions.

• How to open recovered files in word?

  My computer restarted while I was asleep because of system updates (need to turn that off), and when I opened up Word the first time after it restarted, it gave me a pane on the left hand side that showed me all the documents I had opened. I chose one of the documents but I want to open them all, how can I bring that pane back? Update: I forgot to mention I'm on Word 2007. I've found that if you go to C:\Users*YOURUSER*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word you can see the autorecovery files. Mine are still in there, but I don't want to touch them, I'd rather bring back that pane and do it right just in case they disappear as soon as I double click haha...

There are no exact rule.. but may be there are no rules at all? In my practice in every case I have "legacy" system, and after some inspections and interview I can form an opinion how hardware and design can be improved. But every time when I meet "absolutely" new system (I guess there are no new systems, but sometimes are such tasks) I can't say anything trustful. So I'm interesting how people deal with such tasks? They map task on theirs experience or have some base formulas?

  In case you haven't figured it out by now, Oracle reserves an awful lot of announcements for Oracle Open World. As a result, the show is always a lot of fun for geeks. What will the Oracle Solaris team have to say? Will the Oracle Linux team have any surprises? And what about Oracle hardware? For my part, I'll be one of the lizards at the OTN Lounge with the OTN crew, handing out t-shirts to system admins and developers, or anyone who is willing to impersonate one. I understand, not everyone can have the raw animal magnetism of a sysadmin, or the debonair sophistication of a C++ developer, so some of you have no choice but to pretend. I won't judge. I'll also be doing video interviews of as many techie people as I can corner. I've got more than 30 interviews already scheduled. Most of them will be 3-5 minutes long. I'll be asking our best technical minds what's cool about their latest technologies and what impact it will have on system admins or system developers. • Recommendations for stable, reliable flash drives

  We're looking to purchase some flash drives for use in some embedded devices. Most of our requirements aren't too different the generic "good, fast" flash drive: reliability is very important, speed is good, and so that the drive will fit, the case shouldn't be too large (so no OCZ Throttles). Consistency is also a major priority; we'd like to be able to buy more or less the same product a year or two from now without having to worry about the manufacturer swapping drive components with less reliable or slower parts. (We've been burned already by our previous manufacturer doing this.) Any recommendations, especially regarding consistency? I can read Ars Technica to get an overview of current models, but what are consistently good models?

• Grub2 menu after VMware guest customization

  Hi, I have ubuntu 9.10 desktop VMware VM with the default grub2 installed. There is some weird problem with this VM. When you clone this vm and have a customization script run, the cloned machine crashes at first boot (VMware does not officially suport customizaing Ubuntu newer than 8.04). After the creash the Grub boot menu is displayed but there is not time out. I checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg and it does indeed show a timeout of 10 seconds. Nothing happens till I select an option with the keyboard. The second time the Ubuntu loads, it does not crash. My question is, how do I make the grub menu timeout in that case? Thanks.
