• At what size of data does it become beneficial to move from SQL to NoSQL?

  As a relational database programmer (most of the time), I read articles about how relational databases don't scale, and NoSQL solutions such as MongoDB do. As most of the databases I have developed so far have been small to mid scale, I have never had a problem that hasn't been solved by some indexing, query optimization or schema redesign. What sort of size would I expect to see MySQL struggling with. How many rows? (I know this is going to depend on the application, and type of data stored. the one that got me thing was basically a genetics database, so would have one main table, with 3 or 4 lookup tables. The main table will contain amongst other things, a chromosome reference, and a position coordinate. It will likely get queried for a number of entries between two potions on a chromosome, to see what is stored there).

• Bootstrap 3.0.0: How to use data-slide-to outside of indicators?

  I am attempting to make a small gallery like the one shown below - I'm sure you've all seen them considering they are fairly common. When trying to make one using bootstrap I ran into a major problem. I can't seem to link the smaller bottom images to the larger top one that was when one of the smaller ones is clicked it changes to the selected image. I am attempting to use data-slide-to however it does not seem to work outside of the "carousel-indicators". I can't put it into the carousel indicators list because that moves the images up into the gallery (It may be possible to fix this with CSS but my attempts have been worthless). Does anyone know the problem? I've tried tags around each image that didn't seem to work then I tried divs. Still nothing. Things to note: I am using 3.0.0 All images are generated (if you haven't guessed already) Smaller images are separate from larger one (not auto scaled down)

• Can I import an existing member data used in old ASP to a new ASP.NET membership database? [closed]

  I have an old website that I designed and still maintain using old ASP that has a membership database (MS-SQL) that I built from scratch. It is a very simple database that has all the user information in one table (including login info and personal info) and then details and other odds and ends in other tables. It is WAY past time to upgrade this to .NET, especially since I need to add a Paypal payment system into it as soon as I can. I've designed several other sites with membership in .NET, but they have all been from scratch. Is there an easy way to transition from the old ASP site to a new .NET membership database without losing the data? There are hundreds of users with thousands of records relating to those users that I'd rather not lose, if possible. Any ideas on a relatively painless way to do this?

  My main objective is to create a User Interface in order to provision(change the status: activate, deactivate, or suspend) modems. I have received a SOAP developer's guide to the specific type of modem that helps out with the specific values that I need to pass into Iridium's WSDL but I cannot figure out how to do this from a webpage I have created using HTML/CSS, and PHP? I have been told by others that I need to know the portal. I have no idea what that means. I am a beginner programmer who has learned programming for this project. Any suggestions as to how to pass my data into the provisioning API?

  The features I would look for in a 'programmers' font are Monospaced (maybe less important for code, but more important for data) Distinguishable characters. Often I (uppercase i), 1 (one) and l (lower-case L) can be confusing, as can O (upper-case o) and 0 (zero). I'd be interested other character issues, especially in accented or extended character sets. Free Windows / Linux / OSX Legible on screen and printouts at smaller sizes I've community wiki'd this. I'm really looking for a list of fonts that qualify. From that list, people can pick what looks good to them.

• How can I convert an image from raw data in Android without any munging?

  I have raw image data (may be .png, .jpg, ...) and I want it converted in Android without changing its pixel depth (bpp). In particular, when I load a grayscale (8 bpp) image that I want to use as alpha (glTexImage() with GL_ALPHA), it converts it to 16 bpp (presumably 5_6_5). While I do have a plan B (actually, I'm probably on plan 'E' by now, this is really becoming annoying) I would really like to discover an easy way to do this using what is readily available in the API. So far, I'm using BitmapFactory.decodeByteArray(). While I'm at it. I'm doing this from a native environment via JNI (passing the buffer in from C, and a new buffer back to C from Java). Any portable solution in C/C++ would be preferable, but I don't want to introduce anything that might break in future versions of Android, etc.

  I want to create a service where people can upload files. However, since file storage costs money, I want to compress the files so they take less space. I would want to write my own compression algorithm, however, PHP doesn't have good ways to handle binary data (which is needed for many compression algorithms). So I wondered, what would be a better language to create such a website in? I have knowledge of PHP (and Javascript, HTML and CSS) but no experience with other things like Ruby, Perl, Python, and other web development languages.

  I have a simple C++ RPC that lets you have remote class instances that support live members (data structures) update as well as method calls. For example I had a class declared like this (pseudocode): class Sum{ public: RPC_FIELD(int lastSum); RPC_METHOD(int summ(int a, int b)) { lastSum = a + b; return lastSum; } }; On machine A I had its instance. On machines B and C I had created its instances and connected them to machine A. So now they actually do all processing on machine A but machines B, C get lastSum class field updates automatically (and can subscribe to update event). How to call (Nice Name) such a functionality when we have binding over network done automatically by RPC library? How RPC library creator can announce such feature?

The problem is, q.owner_uid is not recognized in the owner sub-query. What am I doing wrong?

  I had my website on rohbits.com but for some reasons I had to delete it and recreate it with this URL wwww.rohbits.com/blog. My problem is that the old links are still visible on google search and when people click on those links, they land on a 404 Error page of the hosting company. I want to either delete all the previous data from the search engines or have an 404 Error page of my own so that I can tell my visitors where the actual website is. I have already redirected all the traffic which comes to rohbits.com to www.rohbits.com/blog but when they click on the expired links, they get this error page.   I am implementing a behavior algorithm and would like to test it with my lovely Warcraft III game to watch how it will fight against real players. The problem I'm having is that I don't know how to obtain information about in-game state (units, structures, environment, etc.) from the running WC3 game. My algorithm needs access to the hard drive and possibly distributed computing, that's why JASS (WC3's editor language) isn't appropriate; I need to run my algorithm from a separate process. Direct3D hooking is an approach, but it wasn't done for WC3 yet and a significant drawback of that approach would be the inability to watch how the AI performs online, since it uses the viewport to issue commands.   Imagine I have three Ubuntu computers home, laptop, beach-house. They all have the same version of Ubuntu, 10.04 installed, and are kept up to date from the repositories. I use f-spot, thunderbird, and google-chrome on all of the computers. Is there a way to keep the data and configuration in sync across them, without requiring constant connectivity for normal (non-synchronous) usage? For example, they should be usable without network connectivity, so something like NFS won't work. An ideal solution would not require manual action to start the syncing process.

  I seem to be having some trouble figuring out a solution for a problem. See the thing is, my code is supposed to read a lot of data from a bunch of files. I've been thinking of two different approaches: 1) the first one seems simpler, I ask the user if they would like to examine the next file or just quit out of the program.( I believe this is simpler and would take less time to run through.) 2)It reads through all the files and outputs the results for each of them, and then a shared result for all of them.( I think this would be better for what I've been asked to do and it saves the user some hassle.) If anyone can tell me how to code either of these in C++, I would be very grateful. Here is a sample of the file: 0 -- 19 weight 0 -- 20 weight I use this to determine density and possibly ignore the weights which is a number.

  Firstofall, I am sorry if my question is to broad. I am developing a tile based game and switched from those gl.Begin calls to using VBOs. This is kind of working allready, I managed to render a hexagonal polygon with a simple shader applied. What I am not sure is, how to implement the "whole" tile concept. Concrete the questions are: Is it better to create 1 VBO for a single tile and render it n-Times in every different position, or render one huge VBO that represents the whole "world" Depending on the answer above, what is the best way to draw a "linegrid". Overlay with the same vbo using the respecting polygon.mode , or is there a way to let the shader to this? How would frustum-culling or mousepicking work then, do i need to keep the VBO-data in memory?

For example, consider a file Movie and I have 3 external drives to copy it to, and I want to copy Movie to all these 3 drives(these drives can be flash storage or external hard-disk or pen-drive etc. but have one thing in common, i.e. they are all external drives) at the same time, means when I right-click on Movie there has to be 1 option saying Copy to All Drives. It's a sort of mini-project and I want to use C language only. For starting I would like it to work only on Windows OS. What are the requirements of developing this software (not the system requirements but what will I need to develop such a software, like editor,compiler etc.)? I know this type of software must have already been developed but I want to use C language and C Language only. So, is it possible to develop such a software?

• Possible to pass pygame data to memory map block?

  I am building a matrix out of addressable pixels and it will be run by a Pi (over the ethernet bus). The matrix will be 75 pixels wide and 20 pixels tall. As a side project, I thought it would be neat to run pong on it. I've seen some python based pong tutorials for Pi, but the problem is that they want to pass the data out to a screen via pygame.display function. I have access to pass pixel information using a memory map block, so is there anyway to do that with pygame instead of passing it out the video port?   Is there any hard data (studies, comparisons, not-just-gut-feel analysis) on the advantages and disadvantages of working from home? My devs asked about e.g. working from home one day per week, the boss doesn't like it for various reasons, some of which I agree with but I think they don't necessarily apply in this case. We have real offices (2..3 people each), distractions are still common. IMO it would be beneficial for focus, and with 1 day / week, there wouldn't be much loss at interaction and communication. In addition it would be a great perk, and saving the commute. Related: Pros and Cons of working Remotely/from Home (interesting points, but no hard facts) [edit] Thanks for all the feedback! To clarify: it's not my decision to make, I agree that there are pro's and con's depending on circumstances, and we are pushing for "just try it".   I'm trying to create a game with many levels loaded from XML files. In my game I have many objects in each level. At present my game contains 20 levels, and I load all the textures at once on startup. But I think the correct way to do it is to only load textures used in the current level. I don't know how to do that. So please explain this by providing some example code. At present I create a class for each type of entity by extending my Sprite class. This subclass loads the appropriate image. I know this is not the best way to do things. Basically I want to know how to load large levels efficiently in Andengine. What is the proper method for loading textures, level data and background images from files when the level is run?

• Is it better to use a Database or a data structure for network stack?

  I've built a multi threaded messaging application in C and I'm currently using a MySQL Memory table to save the session ID, but I'm not sure whether this was a good decision or not. It works like this, the application sends a message and saves the source session ID in the MySQL table. When the application gets the success response it will remove the session's ID from the MySQL table, or if it received an error response then it will keep the ID to be retried later. I've built it this way so that I don't need to care about building a data structure by myself, and the Database provides flexibility when it comes to querying it. Do you think this is appropriate or do I need to use something else? Please note that the application is expecting to handle a large number of transactions/sec.
