• Can a Double-Density Floppy drive be swapped out for a High-Density drive?

  I'm trying to fix the floppy drive in my Roland MC-500. The floppy drive inside is a Matsushita DDF3-1 which doesn't seem to be in production anymore. The DDF3-2 is still available, however it is an HD drive. Does anyone know off the top of their heads if there is any issue with simply swapping the two drives? Could the power usage be different on the drives? Since the machine is expecting a 720k DD drive, are there any jumper settings to have the HD drive function as a DD drive?

• BizTalk and SQL: Alternatives to the SQL receive adapter. Using Msmq to receive SQL data

  If we have to get data from the SQL database, the standard way is to use a receive port with SQL adapter. SQL receive adapter is a solicit-response adapter. It periodically polls the SQL database with queries. That’s only way it can work. Sometimes it is undesirable. With new WCF-SQL adapter we can use the lightweight approach but still with the same principle, the WCF-SQL adapter periodically solicits the database with queries to check for the new records. Imagine the situation when the new records can appear in very broad time limits, some - in a second interval, others - in the several minutes interval. Our requirement is to process the new records ASAP. That means the polling interval should be near the shortest interval between the new records, a second interval. As a result the most of the poll queries would return nothing and would load the database without good reason. If the database is working under heavy payload, it is very undesirable. Do we have other choices? Sure. We can change the polling to the “eventing”. The good news is the SQL server could issue the event in case of new records with triggers. Got a new record –the trigger event is fired. No new records – no the trigger events – no excessive load to the database. The bad news is the SQL Server doesn’t have intrinsic methods to send the event data outside. For example, we would rather use the adapters that do listen for the data and do not solicit. There are several such adapters-listeners as File, Ftp, SOAP, WCF, and Msmq. But the SQL Server doesn’t have methods to create and save files, to consume the Web-services, to create and send messages in the queue, does it? Can we use the File, FTP, Msmq, WCF adapters to get data from SQL code? Yes, we can. The SQL Server 2005 and 2008 have the possibility to use .NET code inside SQL code. See the SQL Integration. How it works for the Msmq, for example: ·         New record is created, trigger is fired ·         Trigger calls the CLR stored procedure and passes the message parameters to it ·         The CLR stored procedure creates message and sends it to the outgoing queue in the SQL Server computer. ·         Msmq service transfers message to the queue in the BizTalk Server computer. ·         WCF-NetMsmq adapter receives the message from this queue. For the File adapter the idea is the same, the CLR stored procedure creates and stores the file with message, and then the File adapter picks up this file. Using WCF-NetMsmq adapter to get data from SQL I am describing the full set of the deployment and development steps for the case with the WCF-NetMsmq adapter. Development: 1.       Create the .NET code: project, class and method to create and send the message to the MSMQ queue. 2.       Create the SQL code in triggers to call the .NET code. Creating the WCF-NetMsmq receive port I will not go through this step in all details. It is straightforward. URI for this receive location should be 'net.msmq://localhost/private/myapp.myqueue'. Notes ·         The biggest problem is usually on the step the “Registering the CLR assembly”. It is hard to predict where are the assemblies from the assembly list, what version should be used, x86 or x64. It is pity of such “rude” integration of the SQL with .NET. ·         In couple cases the new WCF-NetMsmq port was not able to work with the queue. Try to replace the WCF- NetMsmq port with the WCF-Custom port with netMsmqBinding. It was working fine for me. ·         To test how messages go through the queue you can turn on the Journal /Enabled option for the queue. I used the QueueExplorer utility to look to the messages in Journal. The Computer Management can also show the messages but it shows only small part of the message body and in the weird format. The QueueExplorer can do the better job; it shows the whole body and Xml messages are in good color format.

• Problems to connect Java visualVM to a EC2-instance

  I'm trying to profile a AWS EC2 instance via visualVM. The instance is in a securitygroup which allows all connections and i'm runing jstatd with a grant codebase "file:${java.home}/../lib/tools.jar" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; policy on it. When i try to connect from my local machine with visulVM nothing happens. When i use jps i get the following response $ jps -l -m -v rmi://ec2-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.compute-1.amazonaws.com Error communicating with remote host: Connection refused to host: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx; nested exception is: java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out But i can ssh into the instance and use jps locally. Has anyone a pointer in which direction i can debug further?

• NVIDIA error "fallen off the bus"

  i have been having a Serious Issue with my LG notebook and its Nvidia Geforce 310M GPU. It usualy (99% of the time) happens when i leave the computer idle for a while, but it has also happened sometimes while i was using the PC. Suddenly, (usualy when computer is idle) the screen goes black, and the pc freezes completely on the black screen. (not even ping responses). The only sollution is to Hard Reset the machine.   In an Active Directory domain, if I configure a Windows service on a domain member computer to start with an AD user account (aka "ye olde service account",) and the then the service stays running but I don't restart the service or reboot the machine for a year... does the LastLogonTimestamp of the service account's user object continue to update? Edit: If you say "it depends on the service," then use MS SQL Server as an example. I set MSSQL Engine to run as contoso\sql-service. Then I leave it alone for a year.

  Hello everyone! I'm running an Ubuntu 9.10 Linux server. I'm trying to find a way to backup the machine while it is running and from what I see, this eliminates the disk clone utilities. All of the disk clone stuff I have seen for Linux requires that you reboot into a special live CD. So my question is this, what is the best solution for backing up the system while it is running? Also, I don't really care about the OS config too much, I just want to be able to keep my stored files and my programs that I have installed on it. Thanks

• OpenGL support no longer available

  I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on?   Hi, I've been reading up on how to tune SQL Server 2005 for a machine in a test environment. I came across this article on technet which suggests how to configure "server tasking" and says I should refer to the Windows 2003 docs for more info. I have googled Windows 2003 "server tasking" (with and without the quotes) but all I can find is more similar articles on SQL server telling me that it should be configured, not how/where you do it. I know I'm probably searching for the wrong thing - can someone please tell me how to configure it in Windows or SQL server, whichever it is?

• Simulating an UNC path with a leading dot

  Being a C# .NET Windows Forms developer, some customers are running our applications on an Apple OS X Mac inside a Parallels virtual machine. Parallels presents host folders to the guest Windows as UNC paths with a leading dot like \\.psf\Home\Some\More\Folders Now an application of us cannot handle the leading dot correctly when accessing files from these kind of shares ("Invalid URI, cannot analyze host name" exception). I want to debug and fix this issue, unfortunately I do have no Mac and Parallels around here to test it. My question is: Is there a way to "simulate" this kind of share on a normal Windows server or client so that I'll be able to debug my application with Visual Studio? What I tried so far: I already tried to edit my HOSTS file to contain an entry like # ... 127.0.0.1 .psf # ... but Windows just seems to not recognize the share at all.

  I configured a small network on a cloud virtual machine. This virtual machine has a static IP address assigned to eth0 interface that I'll call $EXTIP. mydomain.com points to $EXTIP. Inside, I have some linux containers, that get their ip through DHCP in the Subnet 10.0.0.0/24 (i called the virtual interface nat ). They run some services that can be reached through DNAT. • Couldn't dual boot Vista and Centos 5.4

  Hi all, Today I have installed Centos 5.4 with dual boot with Vista. Everything was fine, but after testing Centos 5.4, when I tried to load Vista, it did not load. After selecting vista from grub menu, it shows the following message: rootnoverify (hd0, 1) chainloader +1 No bootmgr found I googled and try to fix the boot but failed, Then I restart my machine, boot with vista cd and in rescue option, restore my bootmgr by typing bootrec /fixmbr What happened after that, I can load at vista now, but no grub menu shows :P It seems the Centos went totally invisible. I am using dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 and vista in my laptop and its working fine and with no error from the beginning. But installed Centos for one of my project needs and I need it running asap. So I am feeling very helpless. Please help me anyone out there. I know there are many people knows how to fix it. Please help me.. Thanks in advance.

• Windows 7 Printing to a network printer

  We have a 2008 server as our print server. Clients that use windows xp with a logon script to map have no problems printing. When I test printing to a network printer on a windows 7 machine it works fine up to a few machines as soon As i get 12-15 workstations trying to print, when they log in they get the yellow exclamation mark and needs troubleshooting against the printer name. It is being deploy by group policy. I have tried to deploy it by group policy also by group policy preferences and by using a script and i get the same error whatever i try. Does anyone have any suggestions to try and troubleshoot? Once again Windows xp clients have no issues printing at all. It is only windows 7 clients. Thanks

• Why does my computer slow down so much when attaching Bluetooth dongle?

  I have a Bluetooth dongle and I plugged it into my work laptop (a Dell Latitude D830). Windows detects the Generic Bluetooth USB or similar and then proceeds to go incredibly slow with a process, avp.exe¹, taking 50% CPU. The System Idle process is getting most of the other 50% CPU and the avp.exe process is only at Normal priority. The machine doesn't seem to recover, so I had to turn the power off and reboot. Now, I haven't installed the drivers yet for the device, which I am doing now and I expect it to resolve the problem, so I am not asking how to fix this. I would rather know why Windows goes so slow in the first place. What is it trying to do and failing at so badly that it barely crawls? ¹ Part of Kaspersky Internet Security suite

• VMware - Not printing in order

  I am using vmware workstation 7. Guest is Windows XP. The host OS is Windows 7. When I queue the printer with multiple documents, the printer doesn't print in order. It seems to print the smaller size in data of documents first. The printer is an HP printer. This is what I have tried so far: I have tested this on the host machine, and it works fine. I have tested this on other host machines(XP Windows7), and it works fine.   I have a machine that initially had 8.3 filename creation disabled. However, this was causing issues with some legacy software, so it was re-enabled. I'm wondering if it's possible to go back and "add" 8.3 filenames to certain existing directories. For example, say I have a directory named "C:\name with spaces" and I get the following output when I run "dir /x": C:\>dir /x Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 6873-65B8 Directory of C:\ 04/09/2010 01:57 PM <DIR> name with spaces ... I'd like to somehow add an 8.3 name for the directory without recreating it, and then get the following: C:\>dir /x Volume in drive C has no label. • Getting 0x80070043 error when accessing Samba share from Windows 7

  I created a Samba share on my new Ubuntu 10.04 machine. When I try to access it from a Windows 7 client, I get network error 0x80070043 (The network path not found). However, I get this error when I click on the share in the Windows Explorer, so it seems that Windows does find the path. I already enabled NTLMv1, disabled 128bit security and made sure that NetBIOS is running. I briefly disabled the Windows firewall, it didn't make a difference. What could be the problem?

• How many virtual processors or cores should I assign to my Guest OS?

  I've just received an upgraded Host machine, and am looking to push some of those advances to my workstations Guest OS(s). In particular, I used to have a single processor, with 2 cores, so my Guest OS only had 1/1. Now, I've got a single processor with 8 cores, so I'm curious about what would be recommended for my Guest OS now? 1 processor/4 cores? 2 processors/2 cores? 4 processors/1 core? My instinct says to stick with the number of physical processors (or less), but, is that based on reality? I spent a good while looking for an answer to this, but perhaps my google-karma isn't in my favor today.

• Migrate wireless settings from xp to windows 7

  I'm trying to migrate the settings of my old machine (Win XP Professional) to the new one (Win 7 Professional) and I would like to keep my saved passwords for various wireless networks. How can I export them from XP and import in Win7? A few things that are mentioned a lot in chat groups but don't work: netsh can export/import wlan profiles on Vista/Win7, but not on XP; the Wireless Network Setup Wizard can only export settings for networks created by me; the best method I found was via http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_wep_key_faq.html which can list hex keys, but cannot load them nor save them in a useful format; I would rather not copy them one-by-one by hand.

• Carbonite Restore Error after Windows Update

  I recently installed Windows 8 on my main machine, and I'm have an issue with Carbonite. I can't restore any files from my previous OS, only files that where backed up from the current OS. I can download them from the web service, but I can't restore them with the client. The error says "You don't have the necessary security permissions to restore this file." (The file on top was backed up from the new install, while the one on bottom was from the old install.) I'm also having another issue, where Carbonite doesn't think it's running in admin mode. I think it's probably related to this error. When I right click to restore a file, I can't choose a location to restore to. I contacted Carbonite, and they said it's a known issue that apparently happens when upgrade from XP to 7, but they wouldn't help me since I'm running a beta OS. Hopefully one of you fine folks will have an idea.
