• How do I pick the most beneficial combination of items from a set of items?

  I'm designing a piece of a game where the AI needs to determine which combination of armor will give the best overall stat bonus to the character. Each character will have about 10 stats, of which only 3-4 are important, and of those important ones, a few will be more important than the others. Armor will also give a boost to 1 or all stats. For example, a shirt might give +4 to the character's int and +2 stamina while at the same time, a pair of pants may have +7 strength and nothing else. So let's say that a character has a healthy choice of armor to use (5 pairs of pants, 5 pairs of gloves, etc.) We've designated that Int and Perception are the most important stats for this character. How could I write an algorithm that would determine which combination of armor and items would result in the highest of any given stat (say in this example Int and Perception)?

• Database Optimization techniques for amateurs.

  Can we get a list of basic optimization techniques going (anything from modeling to querying, creating indexes, views to query optimization). It would be nice to have a list of these, one technique per answer. As a hobbyist I would find this to be very useful, thanks. And for the sake of not being too vague, let's say we are using a maintstream DB such as MySQL or Oracle, and that the DB will contain 500,000-1m or so records across ~10 tables, some with foreign key contraints, all using the most typical storage engines (eg: InnoDB for MySQL). And of course, the basics such as PKs are defined as well as FK contraints.

• F# - Function with no arguments?

  When thinking in a functional mindset, given that functions are supposed to be pure, one can conclude any function with no arguments is basically just a value. However, reallity gets in the way, and with different inputs, I might not need a certain function, and if that function is computationally expensive, I'd like to not evaluate it if it's not needed. I found a workaround, using let func _ = ... and calling it with func 1 or whatever, but that feels very non-idiomatic and confusing to the reader. This boils down to one question: In F#, Is there a proper way to declare a function with zero arguments, without having it evaluated on declaration?

• Running script constantly in background: daemon, lock file with crontab, or simply loop?

  I have a Perl script that queries a database for a list of files to process processes the files and then exits Upon startup this script creates a file (let's say script.lock), and upon exit it removes this file. I have a crontab entry that runs this script every minute. If the lockfile exists then the script exits, assuming that another instance of itself is running. The above process works fine but I am not very happy with the robustness of this approach. Specifically, if for some reason the script exits prematurely and the lockfile is not removed then a new instance will not execute properly. I would appreciate some advice on the following: Is using the lock file a good approach or is there a better/more robust way to do this? Is using crontab for this a good idea or could I better write an endless loop with sleep()? Should I use the GNU 'daemon' program or the Perl Proc::Daemon module (or some other equivalent) for this?

For example, let's suppose I have a class called X with two Attributes, A and B, and I have the following objects, in that order: object1 = A = "a", B = "h" object2 = A = "a", B = "c" object3 = A = "b", B = "x" object4 = A = "b", B = "b" and I want to order the list by A attribute first, and when they are equals, by B element, so the order would be: "a" "c" "a" "h" "b" "b" "b" "x" As far as I know, the OrderBy method order by one parameter.   Hi, Hoping someone could pls let me know how to prevent the symbol "&" from being replaced by "&amp;" within my URL, specifically within javascript? Just to expand on requirement, I am getting my url from an oracle database table, which I then use within Oracle Application Express, to set the src attribute of an iframe to this url. FYI, the url stored in the Oracle table is actually stored correctly, i.e. http://mydomain.com/xml/getInfo?s=pvalue1&f=mydir/Summary.xml what appears in my use when trying to pass over into iframe src using javascript is: http://mydomain.com/xml/getInfo?s=pvalue1&amp;f=mydir/Summary.xml which basically returns a page cannot be found Hope this clarified further my issue.   Hello, I have one page which uses <ui:insert> called master.xhtml which uses one managedbean named MasterBean.java and its of viewScoped. It calls webservice and has all useful data which will be useful in master.xhtml as well as page which is built using master.xhtml (which uses <ui:include>). When i visit data.xhtml (which uses template as master.xhtml) and which uses managed bean as DataBean.java which is also of view scoped, how do i use MasterBean? If i directly use #{Masterbean.property}, won't it create a new instance again? or will it use the bean which is already in view scope? Also how do i use MasterBean in DataBean in such a way that existing MasterBean's instance is used in DataBean. I don't want new instance of MasterBean in DataBean. Thanks in advance. If i am not clear please let me know.

• Is modifying a file without writing a new file possible in c++?

  Let's say I have a text file that is 100 lines long. I want to only change what is in the 50th line. One way to do it is open the file for input and open a new file for output. Use a for-loop to read in the first half of the file line by line and write to the second file line by line, then write what I want to change, and then write out the second half using a for-loop again. Finally, I rename the new file to overwrite the original file. Is there another way besides this? A way to modify the contents in the middle of a file without touching the rest of the file and without writing everything out again? If there is, then what's the code to do it?

  After an AJAX query, a XML file is returned. I'm able to "parse" that file, but when it comes to getting the "innerHTML" (or in this case "innerXML" lol) of an element, I fail. If the XML element, let's say "content", only contained text I could do: content.childNodes[0].nodeValue (assuming that content references the XML element "content"). But that element contains other elements: <stackoverflow reason="tribute to this page"> <content> <div><span><p>Some more HTML elements</p></span></div> </content> </stackoverflow> I need to copy the content of <content> to an existing <div> in the page, how could I do that? • ActiveRecord and transactionsin between `before_save` and `save`

  I have some logic in before_save whereby (only) when some conditions are met I let the new row be created with special_number equal to the maximum special_number in the database + 1. (If the conditions aren't met then I do something different, so I can't use auto-increments) My worry is that two threads acting on this database at once might pick the same special_number if the second is executed while the first is saving. Is there way to lock the database between before_save and finishing the save, but only in some cases? I know all saves are sent in transactions, will this do the job for me? def before_save if things_are_just_right # -- Issue some kind of lock? # -- self.lock?   I am getting following error each time I tried to select database. The database 'DB Name' is not accessible. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ObjectExplorer) Note: My OS is Win Vista. When I tried to open SQL Mgmt Studio as Run as administrator than I can able to access database properly. Any idea why it is giving error. I am also getting following error when my asp.net application is trying to access database. Cannot open database "DBName" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'PCName\abcd'. I am not very good with SQL Server, please let me know how to create user and grant them permission in case that is what causing the problem. Thanks.

• Automatically Host User Domains in Rails/Apache

  Hi, I'm currently developing a user facing web application that gives each new user their own subdomain on the site, which is fine (using subdomain_fu), but is there a way to let a user map their own domain to this subdomain? I know how to do this manually through SSH-ing into the server and editing the Apache Vhosts file by hand, but is there a way to do this automatically so that a user simply enters their domain into a box on the site (obviously they'd have to change their own DNS elsewhere)? I'm using Ruby 1.8 and Rails 2.3.3 on top of Apache. Essentially letting; http://user.application.com/article-1 be accessed from http://userdomain.com/article-1 Thanks for any help!

  I would like to create an app such that I can send an email with a JPEG attachment and then display it on my site. I am fairly certain that the Mail API allows me to do this, but if it isn't possible please let me know. My biggest concern is what are the limits on the attachment size my app can receive, and what are the quotas related to receiving email? The email quotas I saw seemed to specify quotas for outgoing email. Is it different for incoming mail?

  i got an idea for making php template engine fast and user friendly but i'm not sure if it's good or bad. the idea is to create a fake template engine: creating a template editor in control panel that let user see something like this: <html> <head> <title>{title}</title> </head> <body> {content} </body> </html> what the editor actually does is to replace all php code like <?php echo $this->title; ?> to user friendly {title} but it's not really replacing it just in the view when the user save the template the template actually saved as fast pure php template. the question is this a good idea or bad ? your answers is highly appreciated.

• PHP, MySQL - would results-array shuffle be quicker than "select... order by rand()"?

  I've been reading a lot about the disadvantages of using "order by rand" so I don't need update on that. I was thinking, since I only need a limited amount of rows retrieved from the db to be randomized, maybe I should do: $r = $db->query("select * from table limit 500"); for($i;$i<500;$i++) $arr[$i]=mysqli_fetch_assoc($r); shuffle($arr); (i know this only randomizes the 500 first rows, be it). would that be faster than $r = $db->("select * from table order by rand() limit 500"); let me just mention, say the db tables were packed with more than...10,000 rows. why don't you do it yourself?!? - well, i have, but i'm looking for your experienced opinion. thanks!

• Silverlight Spring Effect on TextBlock control

  Hi, I'd like to create view that if the user clicks on a control, let's say a TextBlock, that the control would spring back and forth in place from where the user clicked. By spring I mean push back and forth like if there were springs behind the TextBlock in each corner. I've seen demos of this type of effect, and for the life of me, I can't come up with the name of the effect to help with searches, or find an example of this. Maybe instead of a TextBlock it would help to image a picture that could be pressed down on, and as if springs were behind it and then would bounce back into place.

  How should class member variables be used in combination with class methods? Let's say I have a class 'C' with a member variable 'someData'. I call C.getData(), which does not return a value but instead puts data in C.someData. The class that instantiated 'C' first calls C.getData and then uses the data by accessing the member variable C.someData. I call C.getData() in the class that instantiated 'C' which is a function that returns data. I myself prefer the second way. But it also depends on the situation and it's a small difference. Is it 'bad' to have class methods that depend on the classes internal state? What are the best conventions?

  For the simplicity, we'll consider two 3D points, that moves one relatively to other, in time. Let's say: at moment t0, we have P1(0,0,0) and P2(0,2,0) at moment t1, P1 is still (0,0,0) but P2 changed to (0,2,2). From what I've understood reading about quaternions, is that, at moment t0, Q1 (representing P1) and Q2 (representing P2) will be both (0, 0, 0, 0). But at the moment t1, Q2 will become something else (w, x, y, z). How do I calculate the Q2 at t1 moment? I've googled a lot on this subject, but I was able to find only rotation between quaternions. • Deploying Rails app over VPN

  You'll have to bear with me as I'm not a Ruby dev, but have inherited a Ruby system. I need to deploy some changes to the app from my repository to the server. I've been instructed to run cap deploy and told that that script will get the latest code from my repository and deploy it to the server. My problem is that I have to VPN to get to the production server and the VPN client then blocks access to my local network, cutting off the repository. So my question is, how can I change my deploy.rb so that I can deploy from my local machine instead? Or is there a better way. If you need to see the deploy.rb, please let me know. Thanks Dave

  I'm having a little problem with constant scope in mixin modules. Let's say I have something like this module Auth USER_KEY = "user" unless defined? USER_KEY def authorize user_id = session[USER_KEY] def end The USER_KEY constant should default to "user" unless it's already defined. Now I might mix this into a couple of places, but in one of those places the USER_KEY needs to be different, so we might have something like this class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base USER_KEY = "my_user" include Auth def test_auth authorize end end I would expect that USER_KEY would be "my_user" when used in authorize, since it's already defined, but it's still "user", taken from the modules definition of USER_KEY. Anyone have any idea how to get authorize to use the classes version of USER_KEY?

  What is the best way for converting phone numbers into international format (E.164) using Java? Given a 'phone number' and a country id (let's say an ISO country code), I would like to convert it into a standard E.164 international format phone number. I am sure I can do it by hand quite easily - but I would not be sure it would work correctly in all situations. Which Java framework/library/utility would you recommend to accomplish this? P.S. The 'phone number' could be anything identifiable by the general public - such as * (510) 786-0404 * 1-800-GOT-MILK * +44-(0)800-7310658 that last one is my favourite - it is how some people write their number in the UK and means that you should either use the +44 or you should use the 0. The E.164 format number should be all numeric, and use the full international country code (e.g.+44)

  I will use some CMD commands in my program and these commands might throw some exceptions. And as you know, when an exception accours, CMD writes its own error message the screen. But, I want to write my own error message. My question is this: Is there a way to block CMD messages and write only my own error messages? P.S. This is not a complex program. It executes CMD commands using System(). Example: Let's say, the user can rename and copy any files in the program. As you know, if the user does not enter file's path properly, an error message is showed on the screen. And I want that this error message never appears on the screen. Only my own error message is showed. Thank you!

  Hi All, I have an comma delimited string which I want to use in an "IN" clause of the statement. eg: 100,101,102 Since In and "IN" clause I have to quote the individial strings, I use a replace function: eg: select ''''||replace('100,101,102',',',''', ''')||'''' from dual; The above query works, however, when I try to use the output of the above as an input to the "IN" clause, it returns no data. I am restricted by only SQL statements, so I cannot use PL/SQL code. Kindly help. eg: select * from employee where employee_number in ( select ''''||replace('100,101,102',',',''', ''')||'''' from dual); The above does not work. Please let me know what I am missing.

• Apache RewriteRule not rewriting as expected

  Can you any one see anything wrong with the following apache rewrite rule: This is in my .htaccess file inside a folder called "text" a subdirectory of localhost/lombardpress I have the following rule Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ([^/]+) /textdisplay.php?fs=$1 [NC] I was expecting this input: http://localhost/lombardpress-dev/text/lectio1 to rewrite to this: http://localhost/lombardpress-dev/text/textdisplay?fs=lectio1 But instead I get a 404 error. The requested URL /textdisplay.php was not found on this server. It looks to me like the RewriteRule has re-written the address but not as I intended - so there must be something wrong with my regular expression. Let me know if I can provide further information.
