• Compare images to find differences

  Task: I have a camera mounted on the end of our assembly line, which captures images of produced items. Let's for example say, that we produce tickets (with some text and pictures on them). So every produced ticket is photographed and saved to disk as image. Now I would like to check these saved images for anomalies (i.e. compare them to an image (a template), which is OK). So if there is a problem with a ticket on our assembly line (missing picture, a stain,...), my application should find it (because its image differs too much from my template). Question: What is the easiest way to compare pictures and find differences between them? Do I need to write my own methods, or can I use existing ones? It would be great if I just set a tolerance value (i.e. images can differ for 1%), put both images in a function and get a return value of true or false :) Tools: C# or VB.NET, Emgu.CV (.NET wrapper for OpenCV) or something similar

• Test massive website

  My company has just migrated all the code for our website to 3 identical servers on an off-site location. Now it is our job to test them. However, the amount of websites/functionality that we have to test is exorbitant, and multiply that times 3! To check every single link and every single function is a daunting task. We are in the process of manually doing that right now. My question to you guys/girls is this... Is there a way to automate the testing so we don't have to waste our time clicking, waiting, and checking the response, times 3? ;-) Let me know if you need any other info. Thanks!

• antlr: Best practice to integrate generated parser into the system

  Here is the background, I am trying to create a DSL to allow customer write simple scripts to query into our mongodb based database. I choose antlr to implement the DSL. From my understanding (and pls let me know if it's not correct) there are 2 approaches to integrate antlr generated parser into the system: Embed code into the grammar file so that the generated parser could be used directly to make query to the database and return result in a certain format (e.g. json encoded) Keep the parser purely a parser, after feed the DSL file to it, and construct the query in another class by retrieving the AST from generated parser class So antlrers, which one do you think is the way I as an antlr newbie should go? Can you list the pros and cos of each approach, or you have other way to recommend?

• C++: Allocation of variables in a loop

  Let's say I have a loop like this: vector<shared_ptr<someStruct>> vec; int i = 0; while (condition) { i++ shared_ptr<someStruct> sps(new someStruct()); WCHAR wchr[20]; memset(wchr, i, 20); sps->pwsz = wchr; vec.push_back(sps); } At the end of this loop, I see that for each sps element of the vector, sps->pwsz is the same. Is this because I'm passing a pointer to memory allocated in a loop, which is destructed after each iteration, and then refilling that same memory on the next iteration?

• Threading and cores

  If I have X cores on my machine and I start X threads. Let's assume for the sake of argument that each thread is completely separated in terms of the memory, hdd, etc it uses. Is the OS going to know to send each thread to a core or do more time slicing on one core for multiple threads. What the question boils down to, is if I have X cores and my program must do independent calculations, should I start X threads, will they each get piped to a core, or is the presumption that because I have X cores I can start X threads completely wrong? I'm thinking it is. This is with C# --

  Hello, We have to communicate with a C++ component from a J2ee web application and my proposal involved using JMS server to communicate with the C++ component which is located on other machine. However the developer of the C++ component wants me to open up TCP/IP sockets from the webapplication and communicate over XML. My view is that socket programming in web application is error prone and will not scale well since there is a limited amount of sockets that can be opened up. Please let me have your architecture/design preference on using JMS vs TCP/IP sockets. Thank you

• Create a basic matrix in C (input by user !)

  Hi there, Im trying to ask the user to enter the number of columns and rows they want in a matrix, and then enter the values in the matrix...Im going to let them insert numbers one row at a time. How can I create such function ? #include<stdio.h> main(){ int mat[10][10],i,j; for(i=0;i<2;i++) for(j=0;j<2;j++){ scanf("%d",&mat[i][j]); } for(i=0;i<2;i++) for(j=0;j<2;j++) printf("%d",mat[i][j]); } This works for inputting the numbers, but it displays them all in one line... The issue here is that I dont know how many columns or rows the user wants, so I cant print out %d %d %d in a matrix form .. Any thoughts ? Thanks :)

  I'm trying to create an index on a view and it keeps failing, I'm pretty sure its b/c I'm using an alias for the column. Not sure how or if I can do it this way. Below is a simplified scenario.   Halo, i am interest in methods, which http analyzer uses to capture data. I would like to write program which saves emails sent via web based clients. The problem is https and HTTP Analyzer solves it, but i dont know how. I got one interesting answer on my question before, but it doesnt reveal as much as i would like to know. Programs like HTTP Analyzer can catch the HTTPS data because they insert themselves in the HTTPS stack. As a result, they get the data after it's generated but before it's being encrypted and put in IP packets. This is highly non-trivial. How it is possible to make? If you have any interesting articles solving this issue, please let me know.

  In my Android app, I want to use a single variable for the log name in multiple files. At the moment, I'm specifying it separately in each file, e.g. public final String LOG_NAME = "LogName"; Log.d(LOG_NAME, "Logged output); I've tried this: public final String LOG_NAME = (String) getText(R.string.app_name_nospaces); And while this works in generally most of my files, Eclipse complains about one of them: The method getText(int) is undefined for the type DatabaseManager I've made sure I'm definitely importing android.content.Context in that file. If I tell it exactly where to find getText: Multiple markers at this line - Cannot make a static reference to the non-static method getText(int) from the type Context - The method getText(int) is undefined for the type DatabaseManager I'm sure I've committed a glaringly obvious n00b error, but I just can't see it!   Hi, I was just wondering if it's possible to "rename" an association in Rails. Let's assume : # An ActiveRecord Class named SomeModelASubModel (some_model_a_sub_model.rb) class SomeModelASubModel < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :some_model_a_sub_model_items end # An ActiveRecord Class named SomeModelASubModelItem (some_model_a_sub_model_item.rb) class SomeModelASubModelItem < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :some_model_a_sub_model end At this point, calling some_model.items, where some_model is an instance of the SomeModelASubModel Class would trigger an undefined method error. What is the best practice for making this happen though, e.g. : # With a method_alias or something, would it be possible to : some_model = SomeModelASubModel.first # for instance items = some_model.items # For the reason stated, this doesn't work, one has to call : items = some_model.some_model_a_sub_model_items Is such a shorthand possible ? • Detect NativeDragDrop to Trash or RecycleBin

  I will let user remove item from List with a cool method. Drag an item in adobe air List control and then drop it to Trash(OSX) or Recycle Bin(Win). The trash accept move drag action only. So I think I must set dragMoveEnable=true. When I drag an item to Recycle Bin on Windows. It show accept effect(alpha mask) and Air remove that object from List's dataProvider. So I can find which one is disappear. But when I drag to Trash on MacOSX. It show effect too. But Air do nothing for List. Maybe this is a bug. How can I avoid it? Are there any way to detect where dropped by user?

  Yeah so I'm lost from the get-go. Alright let's say I have a big image with every tile for a 2D top-down RPG game. They're all the same width and everything. What I don't know is how would I save every individual tile from that image to their own image data for use on the canvas? Basically I want to take a big image with all my tiles, choose squares throughout it to make images out of the tiles, and store each image as a variable in an array. So, how would I do this?

• C++ corrupt my thinking, how to trust auto garbage collector?

  I use to program mainly with C/C++, that's make me dealing with pointers and memory management daily. This days I'm trying to develop using other tools, such as Java, Python and Ruby. The problem is that I keep thinking C++ style, I'm writing code as C++ usually written in almost every programming language, and the biggest problem is the memory management, I keep writing bad code using references in Java and just get as close as I can to the C++ style. So I need 2 thinks here, one is to trust the garbage collector, let's say by seeing benchmarks and proofs that it's realy working in Java, and know what I should never do in order to get my code the best way it can be. And the second think is knowing how to write other languages code. I mean I know what to do, I'm just never write the code as most Java or Python programmers usually do, are there any books for C++ programmers just to introduce me to the writing conventions? (by the way, forgive me for my English mistakes)

• Creating WebService test harness

  Hello, I am trying to create a test harness for our QA staff to test our internal web services. I would like to create a web app that will allow them to enter a uri then submit. The web app will then interrogate the uri to get the appropriate parameters expected and returns with a generated input form. I know, this would be similar to SOAPUI and others. However, I feel it would be earier for them to be able to just use a form with entry fields and click a button to invoke the service and get the results back for display in the web app. In addition, I could create some custom logic that allows them to generate specific behavior they need. Has anybody done anything like this? I have searched and have found similar functionality but nothing close enough to help me. If you need more details please let me know. I'm developing a website and for the first time i found problems using cufon... if you think u know about cofon check this.. http://universite.jvsoftware.com If you open with firefox and IE, you will notice in the navigation bar, when you over the titles will appear a border (actually is an image) but if you open it with chrome or safari, that image doesnt appear.... the cufon script is easy to find in the source code, also the css. I want to find something like the shopping cart at the apple store, it's a div thats not positioned absolute nor fixed, for instance, let's say it's at the center of the screen, and only when you scroll down it follows the scroll only to not disappear, when it reaches the border of the browser header... • Offline database access

  I have a small application which basically consists of an user-friendly CRUD interface to a few tables (and joined tables) It currently works with a MySQL database but I would like to make it available offline. My first thought was to create a SQLite "buffer" in between the MySQL database and the application, e.g. by executing all queries on the SQLite but also storing them in a log table so that they can be executed later in the main database with very basic conflict resolution (I will basically let the user solve it if a conflict is detected) Due to the simplicity of the application this shouldn't be too difficult and good exercise, but I think I would be re-inventing the wheel. So my question is: are there existing solutions or other approaches for this problem?

We will save the theme a poll creator chose on the server and whenever a poll respondent access the poll he will get the questions with the chosen theme. A theme for us means a set of 4-5 colors which we will use to style the poll page. • Best way to use Cradle with Express.js (CouchDB, Node.js)

  I'm building my website ( http://tedxgramercy.jit.su ) with express.js and so far I've been using the http.request method in node to access couch, and that's been cool. I've learned lots about how http, couch, and node work, which is awesome. Anyways, I'm thinking of moving over to cradle now (Let me know if you have a strong opinion about this) and I'd like to know the "right" way to set this up. Should I... require() cradle and make a new connection to my db in each separate route? create my database connection once, and then just pass that connection by require()ing the connection in each route? (if so, how do I do that?) Thanks!!!

• C#: protecting trial releases

  I want to provide a trial version of my software. This version should only be evaluated within a specific period of time. Let's say only during January 2011. As this software massively uses the system clock in processing, it would be quite annoying to set the clock to an earlier time to be able to use it over and over. So because of this, I wound't think of a more complicated protection mechanism. So I have thought about exiting after a test like: if (DateTime.Now.Year != 2011 && DateTime.Now.Month != 1) { MessageBox.Show("expired!"); Application.Exit(); } How easy will this be cracked :-) ? Is there a "safe" way to do this ?

• Send a variable to a variable of a function?

  Let's say I have a function and one of the parameters is for the name of the target variable.. Would it be possible for me to send a variable to the function like this: function otherfunction(input){ ... } function test {target) { var x = 1; target(x); } test(otherfunction); The problem I have is that I'm making a greasemonkey script and one of the variable I need can't be returned from the function due to a limitation.. So this would be the alternative. I just don't know how to get it to work.. Any help would be much appreciated!!

• Using Rails, how can I set my primary key to not be an integer-typed column?

  I'm using Rails migrations to manage a database schema, and I'm creating a simple table where I'd like to use a non-integer value as the primary key (in particular, a string). To abstract away from my problem, let's say there's a table employees where employees are identified by an alphanumeric string, e.g. "134SNW". I've tried creating the table in a migration like this: create_table :employees, {:primary_key => :emp_id} do |t| t.string :emp_id t.string :first_name t.string :last_name end What this gives me is what seems like it completely ignored the line t.string :emp_id and went ahead and made it an integer column. Is there some other way to have rails generate the PRIMARY_KEY constraint (I'm using PostgreSQL) for me, without having to write the SQL in an execute call? NOTE: I know it's not best to use string columns as primary keys, so please no answers just saying to add an integer primary key. I may add one anyway, but this question is still valid.
