  • LINQ InsertOnSubmit Required Fields needed for debugging

    Hi All, I've been using the ADO.NET Strogly-Typed DataSet model for about 2 years now for handling CRUD and stored procedure executions. This past year I built my first MVC app and I really enjoyed the ease and flexibility of LINQ. Perhaps the biggest selling point for me was that with LINQ I didn't have to create "Insert" stored procedures that would return the SCOPE_IDENTITY anymore (The auto-generated insert statements in the DataSet model were not capable of this without modification). Currently, I'm using LINQ with ASP.NET 3.5 WebForms. My inserts are looking like this: ProductsDataContext dc = new ProductsDataContext(); product p = new product { Title = "New Product", Price = 59.99, Archived = false }; dc.products.InsertOnSubmit(p); dc.SubmitChanges(); int productId = p.Id; So, this product example is pretty basic, right, and in the future, I'll probably be adding more fields to the database such as "InStock", "Quantity", etc... The way I understand it, I will need to add those fields to the database table and then delete and re-add the tables to the LINQ to SQL Class design view in order to refresh the DataContext. Does that sound right? The problem is that any new fields that are non-null are NOT caught by the ASP.NET build processes. For example, if I added a non-null field of "Quantity" to the database, the code above would still build. In the DataSet model, the stored procedure method would accept a certain amount of parameters and would warn me that my Insert would fail if I didn't include a quantity value. The same goes for LINQ stored procedure methods, however, to my knowledge, LINQ doesn't offer a way to auto generate the insert statements and that means I'm back to where I started. The bottom line is if I used insert statements like the one above and I add a non-null field to my database, it would break my app in about 10-20 places and there would be no way for me to detect it. Is my only option to do a solution-side search for the keyword "products.InsertOnSubmit" and make sure the new field is getting assigned? Is there a better way? Thanks!

    Let's say I have a Model, for example User, and I want to merge two instances of this Model, say merge User2 into User1. Explicitly this is what I mean: If a field is already filled in User1, it should remain the same If a field is missing in User1 but is present in User2, it should be copied If SomeModel BelongsTo User, every instance of SomeModel pointing to User2 should be modified to point to User1 Same if SomeModel HasAndBelongsToMany User If SomeModel HasMany User, and SomeModel1 Has User2 but no other instance Has User1, it should be modified so that SomeModel1 has User1 instead If SomeModel HasMany User, SomeModel1 Has User1 and SomeModel2 Has User2... well, I'm not sure here, I guess the only solution is to discard SomeModel2, since User1 can BelongTo only one SomeModel. Finally User2 should be removed. Is there a way to automate this? Maybe a Behaviour? If not, I may consider creating it, since I will need it a lot.

  • Accessing a persistent ssh tunnel

    How do I pass commands (shell) to a persistent SSH tunnel rather than open a connection for every instance? I have a Python scraper running on a client server which passes URL variables and shell commands to a remote host via a reverse tunnel (forwarded port), so that the URL's are then executed on the host (python fabric ssh localhost:12345 'browser open URL'). I could make the reverse tunnel persistent but how do I echo the url/command to the session? Update - ControlMaster (built into SSH) solves this one.

    As I understood after reading the chapter related to The Linux Device Model in the Linux Device Drivers 3rd Edition, when a new device is configured, the kernel follows more or less this sequence: The Device is registered in the driver core (device_register(), what includes device initialization) A kobject is registered in the device model It provokes a hotplug event Bus and drivers are checked to see which one matches with the device Probe Device is binded to the driver My main doubt is, in step 1, when is device_register() called and what info should be yet in the device struct? Is it called by the bus to which the device is connected? Any example in the code? Have I misunderstood something? :)

  • How to stop a random ramp in FCGI Processes Killing the server

    So got the below earlier to day... Around that time the logs show a ramp in processes(600) and associated memory (1.2g), cpu usage load average (80) untill the server gave out. Server had to be hard reset by host as there was no ssh or plesk panel access. Fast CGI is configured as below and is setup for one high use site. As I understand it FcgidMaxProcesses 20 should protect against what happen but has not. I've read many forums with differing answers and references to many different fcgi directives, but have found nothing conclusive. Any one got some definitive answers on how to stop this sort of server process ramping and subsequent server failure? If you need more info let me know.     Hi there, I've got a question about a Silverlight WCF Databinding pattern: There are many examples about how to bind data using {Binding} expressions in XAML, how to make async calls to a WCF service, set the DataContext property of a element in the UI, how to use ObservableCollections and INotifyPropertyChanged, INotifyCollectionChanged and so on. Background: I'm using the MVVM pattern, and have a Silverlight ItemsControl, whose ItemsSource is set to an ObservableCollection property on my ViewModel object. My view is of course the XAML which has the {Binding}. Say the model object is called 'Metric'. My ViewModel periodically makes calls to a WCF service that returns ObservableCollection. MetricInfo is the data transfer object (DTO). My question is two-fold: Is there any way to avoid copying each property of MetricInfo to the model class - Metric? When the WCF calls completes, is there any way to make sure I sync the items which are in both my local ObservableCollection and the result of the WCF call - without having to first clear out all the items in the local collection and then add all the ones from the WCF call result? thanks, Krishna

  • IoC and Design Time

    I have a WPF application which I am using to learn MVVM and IoC. The problem is that the Model used by one of the Views expects to pull one of its dependancies in the constructor from an IoC container. When working on this View in the Visual Studio designer it cannot show the design because an exception is being raised in the model. Is there a way around this? Am I pulling my dependancies in the wrong place in code or is there a way I can pass in constructed dependancies, perhaps through Constructor injection.     I have a Mission model that has_many Task, and the Task belongs_to Mission For security I've made this validation on the Task Model: validates_presence_of :mission_id validates_numericality_of :mission_id But the problem is that when create a Mission and add tasks like this: @mission.tasks.build The validation returns error, because the mission id on the task is null ( the mission wasn't yet created ) If I delete the validation, the Mission and Task is created successfuly, but how can I keep the validation and still have this work? I could do a callback after the save, but I don't think that's right, because I don't want to save Tasks without a mission_id. P.S. I'm hidding my mission field on the form. If I have it visible, it will show the currect mission and everything is ok. But if I hidde it the error happens. <%= f.hidden_field :mission, :label => "Missão" %> Is the form reseting the attributes given by the controller on the new action?

    Hi, I am working with Entity Framework 4.0 (VS 2010 Beta 2, NOT RC). I can model the EDM and produce the required database. When I ask VS to generate the code for the model, it generates the expected .designer.cs file. When I look at the factory methods for each entity that the designer has generated, I've noticed that it doesn't include all of the properties of the entity. Is it correct to say that the factory method only includes properties that cannot be null ? This appears to be the case, but I'm not entirely sure. Thanks, Scott

    I get the following error message The table/view 'TABLE1' does not have a primary key defined and no valid primary key could be inferred. This table/view has been excluded. To use the entity you will need to review your schema, add the correct keys and uncomment it when I try to add a view to an Entity Data Model. For testing, I have created a very simple view and I still get the error. below is the view definition SELECT DISTINCT TOP (100) PERCENT MIN(id) AS Expr4, MIN(EmpNo) AS Expr1, MIN(Name) AS Expr2, MIN(Category) AS Expr3 FROM dbo.MYView1 GROUP BY id does any one know of a simple work around. If I could only have the view added to the Model.

    I'm using SproutCore and going through the Todos tutorial on http://wiki.sproutcore.com/Todos+06-Building+with+Rails. SproutCore and Rails use different names for the primary key on a model (Sproutcore = 'guid', Rails = 'id'). The tutorial gives directions to Adjust Rails JSON output, but in my app that I'm planning on building, I cannot do this because sproutcore is only one of a couple interfaces used to interact with the Rails app. As an alternate option, the tutorial gives the following directions: Option 2: Set primaryKey in your Sproutcore model class You can subclass SC.Record and set the primaryKey of your sublcass to "id". Your Todo- Object then needs to extend from e.g. App.Rails.Record. App.Rails.Record = SC.Record.extend({ primaryKey : "id" // Extend your records from App.Rails.Record instead of SC.Record. }); Where should I subclass SC.Record (i.e. in what file) such that it is properly read and included?

    Hello, I have a model with two foreign keys: class Model1(models.Model): model_a = models.ForeignKey(ModelA) model_b = models.ForeignKey(ModelB) value = models.IntegerField() Then, I create an inline formset class, like so: an_inline_formset = inlineformset_factory(ModelA, Model1, fk_name="model_a") and then instantiate it, like so: a_formset = an_inline_formset(request.POST, instance=model_A_object) Once this formset gets rendered in a template/page, there is ChoiceField associated with the model_b field. The problem I'm having is that the elements in the resulting drop down menu include all of the elements found in ModelB table. I need to select a subset of those based on some criteria from ModelB. At the same time, I need to keep the reference to the instance of model_A_object when instantiating inlineformset_factory and, therefore, I can't just use this example. Any suggestions?

    Hi guys, I'm writing a Python open-source app. My app uses some open source Python libraries. These libraries in turn use other open-source libraries. I intend to release my code at Sourceforge or Google Code but do I need to include the sources of the other libraries? Is this a good practice? ...or should I simply write this information into a README file informing the use about the other required libraries. I've placed all these libraries into a libs sub folder in my source directory. When checking my code into SVN, should I use something called svn:externals to link to other sources? Is there a way to dynamically update my libraries to the latest version or is this something I have to do manually when I release a new version. My sincerest apologies if my question sounds vague but I'm pretty lost in this matter and I don't know what to Google for. Thanks all.

  • Ruby on Rails: strange voting increment behavior

    So I have an up and a downvote button that inserts a vote with a value of 1 or -1 into the database. This works correctly. Then, I display the total vote count for that element by summing up its votes' values. However, this isn't working correctly, because the vote sum display is acting really strange: The first vote on a video doesn't seem to increment it at all. Then the second vote does. If I go from an upvote to a downvote, it increments up once, and then the next downvote is down. This is difficult to explain, but maybe you can figure out what is wrong with my code. I have this function in my Video model (the element that is voted on, it has_many video_votes): def vote_sum read_attribute(:vote_sum) || video_votes.sum(:value) end I also have this in my VideoVote model: after_create :update_vote_sum private def update_vote_sum video.update_attributes(:vote_sum => video.vote_sum + value) end What am I doing wrong?

  • How to combine mvc2 client side validation with other client side validation?

    I have a page using mvc2 with client side validation. The client side validation is provided by Microsoft Ajax mvc validation script. This does very well to validate all fields that are related to the model. I also have fields that are never sent to the server such as the confirm password value, and the accept agreement. For these fields i need pure client side validation. I created the javascript to do this, but am now having a hard time integrating the two validatiosn together. I was hoping that i could do something like add another error to an array, or set the page manually to not valid to make sure that the user cannot submit. Basically follow the same approach that i would with normal asp.net validation. I can't find anything like that. In all examples validators are discussed that are connected to parts of the model. What is my best approach here?
