• Remotely initiate windows updates

  I have a network with countless workstations on it and the windows updates are done through WSUS in push cycles to allow us to use a generic image and configuration and avoid network congestion. I have a number of workstations in storage that are connected once a month for a few days to recieve updates, however not all of them fall within their push cycle. I want to avoid going to each machine and clicking "check updates" as that would require me to connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard. Is there a way (preferably through powershell but im open minded) to initiate a check and install of updates on a remote system? Lets say for 1 system at a time right now, I can add a file reader and a look later. NOTE: the configuration of the WSUS server is above my pay grade, im simply being asked to ensure these machines are updated. Thanks for any help or hints

  When setting up a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 system, I went through the motions to set up IIS, MS SQL Server 2008, and Visual Studio 2010 to use as a test-bed. One of the immediate benefits of setting up such a system is that most development can be done remotely: MS SQL Server Management Studio, Visual Studio’s Web development suite, as well as file shares, remote desktop, etc, make for a great way to remotely develop in ‘pristine’ conditions. But there are drawbacks, too, such as needing to deal with firewall issues, not being able to penetrate past a router or the requirement of setting up a VPN. One of the problems I encountered when trying to remote into the MS SQL Server 2008 that I’d set up was the following error: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server I followed the below steps, and was able to connect to the server after just a few moments of tinkering: 1. From the server in question, surf to this Microsoft article, and download and install the Firewall rules modification program. Never drop your firewall, even on a development machine, unless you have a really good reason to. 2. Launch SQL Server Configuration Manager. Navigate to SQL Server Network Configuration, then Protocols for your server name. Enable TCP/IP and Named Pipes by right-clicking and choosing Enable for each given Protocol Name. 3. Restart the SQL Server service from Services (or from command line, subsequently run “net stop mssqlserver” then “net start mssqlserver”. 4. Try your remote connection once more, and you should be able to connect. It’s not a terribly difficult concept, but one of the more challenging tasks developers face is dealing with environment setup. And while there is a certain blurred-line overlap between software development and server administration, sometimes the latter is daunting, especially given that you might set up only a handful of servers during your career.

• How to display downloaded youtube annotations ( not captions) on offline video player?

  i need to display the annotations for some of my downloaded youtube videos. It's also important to make them closeable. Making them clickable would also be nice. What i found out so far: From what i understand there there is a vlc plugin/extension that could also render the annotations but i'm having a hard time finding it. Mplayer might also be an option but i'd have to convert the xml files to .bmp and then use a bmov filter to play them. Any suggestions welcome. Edit: to further clarify i would like to display/overlay annotations from a youtube xml file (i'm willing to go through a conversion step if i have to) pretty much the same way i can display subtitles from a srt or sub file. Edit2: I'm open to using other players too ( if vlc is not a feasible option for what i want)

• No WIFI on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS after today software update

  I just got new dell inspiron3537 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (no windows O/S). It got some wireless (hard block) yesterday. So, this morning, I ran the software update all the security update. After that I can't see "Wireless" in system setting. So, I updated all the software update and looked thru several web site and found "sudo lshw -c network" command. • What is the preferred pattern when attaching a 'runtime object'?

  In my application I have the following: public class NeatObject { /* lots of static data, and configuration flags */ } public class NeatObjectConsumer { void DoCleverStuffWithObjectOnGPU(NeatObject obj); } Where NeatObject and its consumer are used to control the GPU. The idea being that, the configuration of an instance of NeatObject and its members, define how the consumer instance behaves. The object can be passed around, edited, and most importantly serialised/deserialised by the application, with and without knowledge of NeatObjectConsumer, then provided back to the consumer to do something else. The purpose of this seperation is: The consumer manages hardware resources, which change depending on the computer, and even on the execution of the application, making preserving the state of an object which does everything difficult. Avoids circular references if the assembly that contains the consumer needs to reference one that only needs to know about NeatObject. However, there is a complication in that the consumer creates hardware resources and needs to associate them with NeatObject. These don't need to be preserved, but still need to be retrieved. DoCleverStuffWithObjectOnGPU() will be called many, many times during execution and so any bottleneck is a concern, therefore I would like to avoid dictionary lookups. What is the preferred method of attaching this information to NeatObject? By preferred, I mean intuitive - other coders can see immediately what is going on - and robust - method doesn't invite playing with the resources or present them in such a way as to make them easily corruptible. Essentially, I want to add my own metadata - how should I do it? Try to use 'actual metadata' functionality like Reflection? A member of the type of an abstract class? Unmanaged pointers? If you took on a project that used this pattern, what would you have liked the previous developer to do?

• Restoring raid 5 array after bios flash

  I have just flashed my BIOS and now my machine does not detect my raid5 array! It has three 2TB drives in it so that is a LOT of data that will be lost! I have NOT deleted the array and it does not offer me to reboot I'm using Nvidia MediaShield! and Windows 7. Any ideas guys? Thanks! Update: here is the GUI raid configuration. • RAID strategy - 8 1TB drives

  I'm setting up a backup storage device- This machine has Windows Server 2008, on a separate boot drive. It has 8x 1TB drives, and uses a hardware RAID card. My question is, which RAID configuration should I go for? Initially, I was going to go with RAID 5 across all 8 drives, however members on serverFault have advised against it. I was just wondering why? Some people have suggested 2 lots of RAID 5 configuration on 4 of the drives, then striping them... I want to maximise the storage space, as this is a backup unit - will store SQL backups, Acronis Images, files, etc... It won't be for public access, so the I/O won't be that high I wouldn't think.

• How can I redirect HTTP(S) traffic to another gateway?

  I have a network like 192.168.0.0/15 with the default gateway set to 192.168.0.1. All the workstations of the network use this gateway for all kind of accesses to the Internet. Now I am testing a new Internet connection with another provider and for that I'm using a second gateway on the same subnet with 192.168.0.2 as IP address. I want to redirect only HTTP and HTTPS traffic to this second gateway keeping untouched the address of the default gateway set inside every workstation. How can I accomplish this task? What I have to change inside the first's gateway firewall configuration or routes? I tried with a DNAT like: DNAT loc:192.168.0.1 loc:192.168.0.2 tcp 80 but nothing worked. I use Shorewall for simplicity in configuration but I can understand even theorical answers which I will try to adapt to my case.

• How can I set clean urls (enable rewrite) if I don't have a domain ?

  In order to enable clean urls in Drupal, I add the lines below to the lighttpd configuration file. However I'm now working on a local server and I don't have a domain available. So I need to work with this address http://local.ip/Sites/mywebsite I've tried to replace ["host"] with ["socket"] and replace the domain with ip and subfolders (see address above), but unsuccessfully. • IIS is not accepting connections after WIndows system update

  I've been running a web site for the past year on Windows Home Server 2008 R2. After the March 2012 system updates, the site is no longer accessible to clients. They see this error: website is online but isn't accepting connections. Ping tests to the FQDN of the server are successful and NSLOOKUP returns the correct result. The Internet connection tests out good from the server. I have not changed my internet connection (Comcast Business Internet) or my router configuration (I forward incoming requests from the outside to port 80 of the local IP address of the server). I have tried: Disabling the Windows Firewall. Rebuilding the OS and configuration. I still have the problem. How can I resolve this?

• radvd won't accept non-/64 subnets

  I'm trying to set up radvd on a 6RD configuration (on Linux), where I have a /64 subnet, and I'm trying to use it on two distinct physical networks, so I'm trying to give each of them a /80 subnet. However, when I start radvd on these interfaces, it says this: radvd[3987]: prefix length should be 64 for int (int being the name of one of the interfaces.) I know that stateless autoconfiguration doesn't work on subnets that are larger than /64, like a /48 subnet, but AFAIK it's supposed to work on anything that is smaller than /64, so /80 shouldn't be a problem. The final effect, now, is that radvd simply advertises the wrong subnet prefix, effectively "removing" the first 16 bits of it. What is this? Am I all wrong on that, is radvd buggy, or is there some configuration option that I'm missing?

  I have configure our Monit to monitor some of the application in our linux box (httpd,mysqld,etc...).We can receive alerts when using gmail SMTP to send email through it but it failed when we are using our exchange SMTP. Here are the gmail configuration in the monitrc : set mailserver smtp.gmail.com port 587 # primary mailserver username "[email protected]" password "mypasswd" using tlsv1 with timeout 30 seconds and it failed when I changed it to this configuration : set mailserver outlook.automanage.net port 587 # primary mailserver username "[email protected]" password "mypasswd" using tlsv1 with timeout 30 seconds I can telnet my exchange server,so the exchange server is alive and can be connected. Did I miss anything here?Or do I need to need configure something in our exchange server?

  I've written a class library that reads from an xml file and return the result as a string. But when I want to install it as a COM+ component, an error occurred (Error Code: 80131501).   I've installed ELMAH 1.1 .Net 3.5 x64 in my ASP.NET project and now I'm getting this error (whenever I try to see any page): Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite, Version=1.0.61.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=db937bc2d44ff139' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Data.SQLite, Version=1.0.61.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=db937bc2d44ff139' or one of its dependencies. My Active Solution platform is "Any CPU" and I'm running on a x64 Windows 7 on an x64, of course, processor. I've tried compiling for x86 and x64 and I get the same error. I've tried removing the all compiler output (bin and obj). • Own DataFormWebPart: Unable to display this Web Part.

  Hi, What I want is to display a paginable list from my custom data source. All came from the fact that I needed some logical relationships between seach scopes and some dates. I considered ContentQueryWebpart, but CAML is too complicated as I have plenty of different conditions, CoreResults webpart is too limited as it uses KeyWordQuery so I inherited from DataFormWebPart to display my own custom search results from my own custom xml source. Thats the best way i am aware of... I knew I needed some configuration to write in my pageLayout like MyWebParts:MyCustomWebPart etc so I went to Designer, put DataFormWebPart on a page, linked it to list of pages, and set multiple item view and that gave me some configuration.. Firstly i checked if DataFormWebPart works when put on pageLayout and it sucessfully displayed my pages list in pages library. But that was not what I wanted, i needed to set my own XML data source... I then changed the configuration of WebPartPages:DataFormWebPart to match mine and detach from any listName or listId and I change the XSL tag to much simplier to display all results and now I am getting: Unable to display this Web Part. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line. • COMException when trying to use a Library

  Hi Guys, I have an ASP.net WebService which uses a Library, this has a dependency on some third party .dlls. If I add a reference to the Library to my webservice, I get a COMException and I can't load the site. I thought it may be to do with aspnet user credentials, so I have tried impersonating and using processModel in machine.config but nothing seems to work. The .dlls are for communicating with hardware so I am not even using them on the server just other parts of the library, is there any way I can fix this? I'm running on Windows XP Pro SP3 with Visual 2008 SP1 and .net 3.5. I am thinking the only way of fixing it, is to split up the library into hardware and non-hardware based.   Hello, I am using Seam with JBoss AS. In my application I have a SLSB which is also declared as a seam component using the @Name annotation. I am trying to inject and use this SLSB in another seam component using the @In annotation. My problem is that sometimes Seam injects the local interface (then the code runs fine) and sometimes seam injects the remote interface (then there is an error in execution of the code). I have tried doing all the things specified on this link: http://docs.jboss.org/seam/2.2.0.GA/reference/en-US/html/configuration.html#config.integration.ejb.container The SeamInterceptor is configured, I have specified the jndi pattern in components.xml file ( < core:init debug="true" jndi-pattern="earName/#{ejbName}/local"/ ), I have also tried using the @JndiName("earName/ejbName/local") annotation for every SLSB, I have tried setting this property ( org.jboss.seam.core.init.jndiPattern=earName/#{ejbName}/local ) in the seam.properties file. I have also tried putting the text below in web.xml file <context-param> <param-name>org.jboss.seam.core.init.jndiPattern</param-name> <param-value>earName/#{ejbName}/local</param-value> </context-param> Even after doing all the above mentioned things, the seam still injects the remote interface sometimes. Am I missing something here? Can anyone tell me how to resolve this issue and tell seam to always inject the local interface? • Jboss Seam: Enabling Debug page

  Hi all, I want to enable the debug page. So, I have done the following: I have the jboss-seam and jboss-seam-debug jars as dependency in both my ejb and web maven projects (both are modules of my superproject) I put this context parameter in my web.xml: <context-param> <param-name>org.jboss.seam.core.init.debug</param-name> <param-value>true</param-value> </context-param> Now, when I hit the URL of my application, I get the debug page with this exception (full stacktrace at the end of the post): Caused by java.lang.IllegalStateException with message: "No phase id bound to current thread (make sure you do not have two SeamPhaseListener instances installed)" From posts I read it seems that this is somehow related to two jars of jboss-seam or jboss-seam-debug being in the classpath. I opened my ear file and only one of each is present (in the ear) whereas the war itself has no libraries in the WEB-INF/lib. I have also read of another way to initialize debug page using the components.xml. • Eclipse buildtime and runtime classpaths for easy execution of junit test cases

  Hey, I've a large eclipse project with multiple junit classes. I'm trying to strike a balance between adding runtime resources to the eclipse project classpath, and the need to configure mutliple junit launch configurations. I realise the default eclipse build classpath is inherited by all unit test configurations, but some of my tests require extra runtime resources. I could add these resources to the build classpath, but this does slow my overall project build time (since it has to keep more files in synch). I don't like the idea of including * resources and jars on the runtime classpath. The two options that i have are these, the positive and negative cases as i see it are listed 1 : Add all runtime resources to eclipse classpath. POS I can select a unit test and run it without having to configure the test classpath. POS Extra resources on build classpath means eclipse slows down. NEG More difficult to ensure each test uses the correct resources. 2 : Configure the classpath of each unit test POS I know exactly what resources are being used by a test. POS Smaller build classpath means quicker build and execution by eclipse. NEG Its a pain having to setup multiple separate junit runtime classpaths. Ideally i'd like to configure one base junit runtime configuration, which takes the default eclipse build classpath, adds extra runtime jars and resources. This configuration could then be reused by the specific junit test cases, Is anything like this possible? I'm aware of the commons launch and jar manifest file solutions to configuring the classpath, but they both seem to assume that an ant build is run before the test can execute. I want to avoid any eclipse dependency on calling an ant target when refactoting code and executing tests. Basically - What is the the easiest way to seperate and maintain the eclipse buildtime classpath and junit runtime classpaths?
