  • noob: how to show login error message on the same page after php server processes request.

    Hi, I have a login page. User first enters information and submits the form. And I have a php script that will see if the user exists. If( authenticated == true) { // I do a redirect } else { // I want to popup an error message on the same page. } 1) I'm not sure how to show the popup message, I would like to make my div element visible with an error message returned from the server, I would have to use Ajax, right? But how? Or are there alternatives which are just as good.

    I updated jQuery latest version v1.4.2 and getting 'Could not convert JavaScript argument arg 0' this error. Is the any common fix for this. I found some solution and they are saying that when finding dimension for display none element it will give this error. Also the following fix is working for me Placing this if (!elem || elem == document) elem = document.body above this line var computedStyle = defaultView.getComputedStyle(elem, null); I am not sure this is the proper solution. I first found this bug when using jquery blockUI plugin and after updating that plugin to latest version fixed this issue. Anyone suggest me better solution for this?

  • Using PHP's exec() function (or the likes), how can you display terminal error output?

    Previous Reference I am just wondering if there's a way (using PHP) to output the compile error information from the terminal to the browser? For example: If you use this code to execute in the terminal... gcc -o try try.c ...and assuming the "try.c" have some errors. The terminal will output something like this: try.c In function 'main': try.c:27 'x' undeclared (first use in this function) try.c:27 (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once try.c:27 for each function it appears in.) Meanwhile, using this PHP code... <?php exec("gcc -o try try.c"); ?> The browser does not return any output like the terminal does. Is there a possible way direct or indirect that the error details that the terminal showed can be passed to the be displayed on a browser? Thank you very much.

  • Why is Python 3.1.3 in the header listed as a syntax error?

    Hi, I'm a newbie programmer so I'll do my best to clearly ask my question. I'm running Python scripts in Mac 10.6.5 and now trying to write and save to a text file (following instructions in HeadsUp Python book). Whenever I hit function+F5 (as instructed) I get the same "invalid syntax" error and Idle highlights the "1" in "Python 3.1.3" of the header. Here's the header to which I'm referring: Python 3.1.3 (r313:86882M, Nov 30 2010, 09:55:56) [GCC 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5494)] on darwin Type "copyright", "credits" or "license()" for more information. Extremely frustrating. I've checked and rechecked the code but this doesn't seem to be code related because the "syntax error" is in regards to the header text that posts in every Idle/Python session. Help anyone?   • ASP.NET GZip Encoding Caveats

    GZip encoding in ASP.NET is pretty easy to accomplish using the built-in GZipStream and DeflateStream classes and applying them to the Response.Filter property.  While applying GZip and Deflate behavior is pretty easy there are a few caveats that you have watch out for as I found out today for myself with an application that was throwing up some garbage data. But before looking at caveats let’s review GZip implementation for ASP.NET. ASP.NET GZip/Deflate Basics Response filters basically are applied to the Response.OutputStream and transform it as data is written to it through the ASP.NET Response object. So a Response.Write eventually gets written into the output stream which if a filter is also written through the filter stream’s interface. To perform the actual GZip (and Deflate) encoding typically used by Web pages .NET includes the GZipStream and DeflateStream stream classes which can be readily assigned to the Repsonse.OutputStream. With these two stream classes in place it’s almost trivially easy to create a couple of reusable methods that allow you to compress your HTTP output. In my standard WebUtils utility class (from the West Wind West Wind Web Toolkit) created two static utility methods – IsGZipSupported and GZipEncodePage – that check whether the client supports GZip encoding and then actually encodes the current output (note that although the method includes ‘Page’ in its name this code will work with any ASP.NET output). /// <summary> /// Determines if GZip is supported /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static bool IsGZipSupported() { string AcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"]; if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(AcceptEncoding) && (AcceptEncoding.Contains("gzip") || AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate"))) return true; return false; } /// <summary> /// Sets up the current page or handler to use GZip through a Response.Filter /// IMPORTANT: /// You have to call this method before any output is generated! /// </summary> public static void GZipEncodePage() { HttpResponse Response = HttpContext.Current.Response; if (IsGZipSupported()) { string AcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"]; if (AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate")) { Response.Filter = new System.IO.Compression.DeflateStream(Response.Filter, System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress); Response.Headers.Remove("Content-Encoding"); Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "deflate"); } else { Response.Filter = new System.IO.Compression.GZipStream(Response.Filter, System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress); Response.Headers.Remove("Content-Encoding"); Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "gzip"); } } } As you can see the actual assignment of the Filter is as simple as: Response.Filter = new DeflateStream(Response.Filter, System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress); which applies the filter to the OutputStream. You also need to ensure that your response reflects the new GZip or Deflate encoding and ensure that any pages that are cached in Proxy servers can differentiate between pages that were encoded with the various different encodings (or no encoding). To use this utility function now is trivially easy: In any ASP.NET code that wants to compress its Response output you simply use: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); Entry = WebLogFactory.GetEntry(); var entries = Entry.GetLastEntries(App.Configuration.ShowEntryCount, "pk,Title,SafeTitle,Body,Entered,Feedback,Location,ShowTopAd", "TEntries"); if (entries == null) throw new ApplicationException("Couldn't load WebLog Entries: " + Entry.ErrorMessage); this.repEntries.DataSource = entries; this.repEntries.DataBind(); } Here I use an ASP.NET page, but the above WebUtils.GZipEncode() method call will work in any ASP.NET application type including HTTP Handlers. The only requirement is that the filter needs to be applied before any other output is sent to the OutputStream. For example, in my CallbackHandler service implementation by default output over a certain size is GZip encoded. The output that is generated is JSON or XML and if the output is over 5k in size I apply WebUtils.GZipEncode(): if (sbOutput.Length > GZIP_ENCODE_TRESHOLD) WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); Response.ContentType = ControlResources.STR_JsonContentType; HttpContext.Current.Response.Write(sbOutput.ToString()); Ok, so you probably get the idea: Encoding GZip/Deflate content is pretty easy. Hold on there Hoss –Watch your Caching Or is it? There are a few caveats that you need to watch out for when dealing with GZip content. The fist issue is that you need to deal with the fact that some clients don’t support GZip or Deflate content. Most modern browsers support it, but if you have a programmatic Http client accessing your content GZip/Deflate support is by no means guaranteed. For example, WinInet Http clients don’t support GZip out of the box – it has to be explicitly implemented. Other low level HTTP clients on other platforms too don’t support GZip out of the box. The problem is that your application, your Web Server and Proxy Servers on the Internet might be caching your generated content. If you return content with GZip once and then again without, either caching is not applied or worse the wrong type of content is returned back to the client from a cache or proxy. The result is an unreadable response for *some clients* which is also very hard to debug and fix once in production. You already saw the issue of Proxy servers addressed in the GZipEncodePage() function: // Allow proxy servers to cache encoded and unencoded versions separately Response.AppendHeader("Vary", "Content-Encoding"); This ensures that any Proxy servers also check for the Content-Encoding HTTP Header to cache their content – not just the URL. The same thing applies if you do OutputCaching in your own ASP.NET code. If you generate output for GZip on an OutputCached page the GZipped content will be cached (either by ASP.NET’s cache or in some cases by the IIS Kernel Cache). But what if the next client doesn’t support GZip? She’ll get served a cached GZip page that won’t decode and she’ll get a page full of garbage. Wholly undesirable. To fix this you need to add some custom OutputCache rules by way of the GetVaryByCustom() HttpApplication method in your global_ASAX file: public override string GetVaryByCustomString(HttpContext context, string custom) { // Override Caching for compression if (custom == "GZIP") { string acceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Response.Headers["Content-Encoding"]; if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(acceptEncoding)) return ""; else if (acceptEncoding.Contains("gzip")) return "GZIP"; else if (acceptEncoding.Contains("deflate")) return "DEFLATE"; return ""; } return base.GetVaryByCustomString(context, custom); } In a page that use Output caching you then specify: <%@ OutputCache Duration="180" VaryByParam="none" VaryByCustom="GZIP" %> To use that custom rule. It’s all Fun and Games until ASP.NET throws an Error Ok, so you’re up and running with GZip, you have your caching squared away and your pages that you are applying it to are jamming along. Then BOOM, something strange happens and you get a lovely garbled page that look like this: Lovely isn’t it? What’s happened here is that I have WebUtils.GZipEncode() applied to my page, but there’s an error in the page. The error falls back to the ASP.NET error handler and the error handler removes all existing output (good) and removes all the custom HTTP headers I’ve set manually (usually good, but very bad here). Since I applied the Response.Filter (via GZipEncode) the output is now GZip encoded, but ASP.NET has removed my Content-Encoding header, so the browser receives the GZip encoded content without a notification that it is encoded as GZip. The result is binary output. Here’s what Fiddler says about the raw HTTP header output when an error occurs when GZip encoding was applied: HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error Cache-Control: private Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Date: Sat, 30 Apr 2011 22:21:08 GMT Content-Length: 2138 Connection: close ?`I?%&/m?{J?J??t??` … binary output striped here Notice: no Content-Encoding header and that’s why we’re seeing this garbage. ASP.NET has stripped the Content-Encoding header but left our filter intact. So how do we fix this? In my applications I typically have a global Application_Error handler set up and in this case I’ve been using that. One thing that you can do in the Application_Error handler is explicitly clear out the Response.Filter and set it to null at the top: protected void Application_Error(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Remove any special filtering especially GZip filtering Response.Filter = null; … } And voila I get my Yellow Screen of Death or my custom generated error output back via uncompressed content. BTW, the same is true for Page level errors handled in Page_Error or ASP.NET MVC Error handling methods in a controller. Another and possibly even better solution is to check whether a filter is attached just before the headers are sent to the client as pointed out by Adam Schroeder in the comments: protected void Application_PreSendRequestHeaders() { // ensure that if GZip/Deflate Encoding is applied that headers are set // also works when error occurs if filters are still active HttpResponse response = HttpContext.Current.Response; if (response.Filter is GZipStream && response.Headers["Content-encoding"] != "gzip") response.AppendHeader("Content-encoding", "gzip"); else if (response.Filter is DeflateStream && response.Headers["Content-encoding"] != "deflate") response.AppendHeader("Content-encoding", "deflate"); } This uses the Application_PreSendRequestHeaders() pipeline event to check for compression encoding in a filter and adjusts the content accordingly. This is actually a better solution since this is generic – it’ll work regardless of how the content is cleaned up. For example, an error Response.Redirect() or short error display might get changed and the filter not cleared and this code actually handles that. Sweet, thanks Adam. It’s unfortunate that ASP.NET doesn’t natively clear out Response.Filters when an error occurs just as it clears the Response and Headers. I can’t see where leaving a Filter in place in an error situation would make any sense, but hey - this is what it is and it’s easy enough to fix as long as you know where to look. Riiiight! IIS and GZip I should also mention that IIS 7 includes good support for compression natively. If you can defer encoding to let IIS perform it for you rather than doing it in your code by all means you should do it! Especially any static or semi-dynamic content that can be made static should be using IIS built-in compression. Dynamic caching is also supported but is a bit more tricky to judge in terms of performance and footprint. John Forsyth has a great article on the benefits and drawbacks of IIS 7 compression which gives some detailed performance comparisons and impact reviews. I’ll post another entry next with some more info on IIS compression since information on it seems to be a bit hard to come by.   • sudo: /usr/lib/sudo/sudoers.so must be owned by uid 0

    Whenever I try to do anything at all that requires my password it returns this: u7ur7l3@ubuntu:~$ sudo sudo: /usr/lib/sudo/sudoers.so must be owned by uid 0 sudo: fatal error, unable to load plugins u7ur7l3@ubuntu:~$ So I can't install anything from the Software Center / package manager or run any commands in terminal that require my password. I can log in, but that's pretty much it. I accidentally changed the permissions of some files, then changed some more trying to fix it :/. Now I'm completely lost as to what to do. This is what happened when I tried to get sudo working again using pkexec: u7ur7l3@ubuntu:~$ pkexec chown root /usr/lib/sudo/sudoers.so Error getting authority: Error initializing authority: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ExecFailed: Failed to execute program /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success u7ur7l3@ubuntu:~$ sudo ls sudo: /usr/lib/sudo/sudoers.so must be owned by uid 0 sudo: fatal error, unable to load plugins And to change permissions I was using Root Actions as a dolphin service/ plugin thing, so history doesn't show me the permission changes. I just realized that sounds don't work at all anymore. When I go into Phonon my default settings and playback devices aren't even there. Also I don't have the option to shutdown, I can only log out or leave.

  • MySQL Workbench on Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't starts after latest (Jun12) updates

    MySQL workbench was working fine till today. I installed the regular updates and now its just doesnt starts. When started its just shows the 'opening screen' and nothing happens. I tried re-installing it from synaptic but no luck. I use it all the time and now suffering a lot. Any help will be appreciated. When run from terminal with: mysql-workbench --log-level=debug3 --verbose It gives a long log. I have performed both of the "tweaks" explained in that solution (i.e., here and here); but that does not seem to help. My gnome-shell is version 3.2.1.     Hi, I am new to Ubuntu and I'm still trying to figure this OS out (for work it's brilliant, better than Windows). Before I wrote this question, I did my research via Google, this website and even in StackOverflow.com. Whatever error came up, I googled it but with no success on how to solve this. Back to the main point: I tried to install (lamp) apache2 with this guide (in German) and this one(in english). Then I got stuck at the start command (with which one is able to start the apache2 server), my first try to run the server was a success until i wrote sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload then it showed me an error: $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload * Starting web server apache2 Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/ports.conf: Invalid command 'oder', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration Action 'reload' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. [fail] I didn't even write the word "oder" so I closed the shell and opened it anew. It showed the same error. After that, I've done some research and found out that my file (index.html (which is in my /var/www folder)), which I access via the browser, when I type in http://localhost should show up and tell that it was a success. So I removed apache2 and installed it again but now the following errors appear: $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start * Starting web server apache2 Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/ports.conf: Invalid command 'oder', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration Action 'start' failed.     I've been having a problem with the package manager. I seemed to have installed gforge, partially, but it keeps giving me errors whenever I install something. (Note that the thing I'm trying to install actually does get installed, but there is always an error returned).     I've been struggling to get this .htaccess working. The aim is to disallow all user agents besides my app. The app sends a GET request with a user agent of lets say 'AcmeUpdater'. Whenever I try to navigate to any file in the folder, I get a 500 - Internal Server Error. Here are the rules I'm using: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !^KMUpdaterClient* RewriteRule .* - [F,L] </IfModule> I have updated the .htaccess file as suggested in the answer by Nick, and restarted Apache. After trying a couple of different things, it seems that just the presence of a .htaccess is causing the 500 error. I'm getting nothing in the error logs. The .htaccess file at the document root looks like the following: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> Options +FollowSymLinks ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?error=404 RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d </IfModule> So I realised that the error logs were in chronological order rather than the reverse chronological I expected (Oops!). The error I'm getting is: </IfModule> without matching <IfModule> section. I removed the </IfModule> and still I get that error. Ideas?

  • Doesn't boot after installation

    Downloaded Ubuntu 12.04.1-alternate-amd64 Installed to USB stick Integrity check fails on ./install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/default but that seems to be a known bug where the file isn't included in the alternative 64-bit ISO and shouldn't affect installation. I ignore it and proceed on. For partitioning on 2 SSD Drives: Partition 300MB and 63GB on both RAID1 the 300MB and 63GBs Set the 300MB to EXT4 on /boot Encrypt the rest as MD1 and set it for LVM Create two volumes from MD1: 4GB swap and 59GB to / I go through the installation and get to the point where it says everything is ready and to take the media out so as to boot from the drives I receive the error "Error: No video mode activated." on startup I've read that this can be solved by running "cp /usr/share/grub/*.pf2 /boot/grub" and then updating grub but I can't get to a place where I can actually run this command. In rescue mode I can get to a shell from installer with /boot mounted to /target. So from there I can run "cp /cdrom/boot/grub/font.pf2 /target/grub/" but can't figure out a way to get it to update grub after that or know how what to change in manually updating the grub.cfg file. If I try other devices to mount the root filesystem I get the error "An error occurred while mounting the device you entered for your root file system". It just sits on the video mode error and doesn't progress further. Googling around it seems like people see the error briefly before it continues booting, not getting stuck on it the way I am which leads me to believe that error may be unrelated to Ubuntu not booting. So any ideas as to what I should try next or what needs to be done to install Ubuntu and get it to boot would be helpful.

    The problem is, I could log in under the terminal, i could ifup eth0, i could do anything I want in the terminal, but if I use ctrl+alt+f7 goto the gnome login screen, after I input the correct password, the system just send me back to same login screen again. I have created a new user, but it didn't work. I have change all the files under ~/ to jichao:jichao(which is my username) with chown -hR jichao:jichao /home/jichao, but it didn't work too.
