• How to program a connection pool?

- by the_drow
Is there a known algorithm for implementing a connection pool? If not what are the known algorithms and what are their trade-offs? What design patterns are common when designing and programming a connection pool? Are there any code examples implement a connection pool using boost.asio? Is it a good idea to use a connection pool for presisting connections (not http)? How is threading related to connection pooling? When do you need a new thread?

• How to set an image based on iphone platform in objective-c

- by Toran Billups
I'm moving my application from 3.x to 4.x as I prepare for the app store and found that I need to have 2 copies of all my custom pngs - my question is how can I determine what img to show and when. Example - how do I know to show the Find.png vs the [email protected] Is it "safe" or "correct" to look for 4.x specific apis or does the iphone have a way to determine what platform you are on at runtime? Thank you in advance

• Python + PyQt program freezes

- by DSblizzard
I wrote PyQt application. After it's start I close it (GUI), but timer don't stops and Python sometimes freezes. Only thing to unfreeze it - Ctrl-C, after which following message appears: Traceback (most recent call last): File "", line 262, in timerEvent KeyboardInterrupt timer don't stops again, and CPython works very slowly. How to avoid this problem?

• Changing pointer of self

- by rob5408
I have an object that I alloc/init like normal just to get a instance. Later in my application I want to load state from disk for that object. I figure I could unarchive my class (which conforms to NSCoding) and just swap where my instance points to. To this end I use this code... NSString* pathForDataFile = [self pathForDataFile]; if([[NSFileManager defaultManager] fileExistsAtPath:pathForDataFile] == YES) { NSLog(@"Save file exists"); NSData *data = [[NSMutableData alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:pathForDataFile]; NSKeyedUnarchiver *unarchiver = [[NSKeyedUnarchiver alloc] initForReadingWithData:data]; [data release]; Person *tempPerson = [unarchiver decodeObjectForKey:@"Person"]; [unarchiver finishDecoding]; [unarchiver release]; if (tempPerson) { [self release]; self = [tempPerson retain]; } } Now when I sprinkled some NSLogs throughout my application I noticed self.person: <Person: 0x3d01a10> (After I create the object with alloc/init) self: <Person: 0x3d01a10> (At the start of this method) tempPerson: <Person: 0x3b1b880> (When I create the tempPerson) self: <Person: 0x3b1b880> (after i point self to the location of the tempPerson) self.person: <Person: 0x3d01a10> (After the method back in the main program) What am I missing?

• How to program a text search and replace in PDF files

- by rpilkey
How would I be able to programmatically search and replace some text in a large number of PDF files? I would like to remove a URL that has been added to a set of files. I have been able to remove the link using javascript under Batch Processing in Adobe Pro, but the link text remains. I have seen recommendations to use text touchup, which works manually, but I don't want to modify 1300 files manually.

• What did they program this toy with?

- by Trix
A rather strange question: I'm often asking myself with what programming languages things were created. I recently found this toy mini computer I played with when I was 13 or so at home. (Note: It is not one of those toy "notebooks", it's really small and came as an extra with a magazine) "Features": Hadware: LCD with a small field of pixels where the games were going on, besides that some stats such as score, highscore etc. Sounds and horrible music when started A really small "keyboard" with a wire Software: At least 14 or so games, from Snake over Tetris and Breakdown to some abomination of a car racing game A calculator Game selecting menu An alarm clock Inside there is a really small circuit board, I don't want to open the thing up now, though. Can you imagine if the games and "Operating System" of this thing where actually programmed using a language? If yes, what language could it be? If not with a programming language, how else was it created?

• How to debug iPhone project crash when there is no error message

- by teepusink
Hi, I am doing this iPhone app that works fine on the simulator. However, when I run it on a device in debug mode, it just crash without any error messages. How can I debug that? I heard about a flag we can set to help with this kind of situation but not sure what that flag is and how to set it. If I'm not mistaken I think what that flag does is put a break point automatically prior to crash. Thanks, Tee

• Require help with program for edutainment game

- by Ender
I am working on a factorisation problem and for small numbers it is working well. I've been able to calculate the factors (getting the answers from Wolfram Alpha) for small numbers, like the one on the Wikipedia page (5959). Along with the Wikipedia page I have been following this guide. Once again, as my Math knowledge is pretty poor I cannot follow what I need to do next. EDIT: It finally works! I'll post the working code up here once I've got it fully working so that others in my predicament can learn from it.

• throwing exception from APCProc crashes program

- by lazy_banana
I started to do some research on how terminate a multithreaded application properly and I found those 2 post(first, second) about how to use QueueUserAPC to signal other threads to terminate. I thought I should give it a try, and the application keeps crashing when I throw the exception from the APCProc. Code: #include <stdio.h> #include <windows.h> class ExitException { public: char *desc; DWORD exit_code; ExitException(char *desc, int exit_code): desc(desc), exit_code(exit_code) {} }; //I use this class to check if objects are deconstructed upon termination class Test { public: char *s; Test(char *s): s(s) { printf("%s ctor\n",s); } ~Test() { printf("%s dctor\n",s); } }; DWORD CALLBACK ThreadProc(void *useless) { try { Test t("thread_test"); SleepEx(INFINITE,true); return 0; } catch (ExitException &e) { printf("Thread exits\n%s %lu",e.desc,e.exit_code); return e.exit_code; } } void CALLBACK exit_apc_proc(ULONG_PTR param) { puts("In APCProc"); ExitException e("Application exit signal!",1); throw e; return; } int main() { HANDLE thread=CreateThread(NULL,0,ThreadProc,NULL,0,NULL); Sleep(1000); QueueUserAPC(exit_apc_proc,thread,0); WaitForSingleObject(thread,INFINITE); puts("main: bye"); return 0; } My question is why does this happen? I use mingw for compilation and my OS is 64bit. Can this be the reason?I read that you shouldn't call QueueApcProc from a 32bit app for a thread which runs in a 64bit process or vice versa, but this shouldn't be the case.

• MC75 using symbol.imaging.device libraries for program

- by Christy
UPDATE: I found another library in the Windows Mobile - CameraCaptureDialog - this did the job - never did figure out the zero length available devices... Hi all, I have a .net application running on a symbol mc75 (motorola) using the scanner. I am now trying to add functionality for the camera and I am running into issues. To find the 'devices' you are supposed to use the library's 'available devices' function. With the barcode it is symbol.barcode.devices.availabledevices and it returns two items (you can scan from the scanner or using the camera device) However, when I do the camera library it does not find any devices - symbol.imaging.devices.availabledevices returns 0 I can take a picture using the software on the mc75, so I know the functionality is there, I just can't figure out how to get to it programmatically.... Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help!

• "for" loop from program 7.6 from Kochan's "Programming in Objective-C"

- by Mr_Vlasov
"The sigma notation is shorthand for a summation. Its use here means to add the values of 1/2^i, where i varies from 1 to n. That is, add 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 .... If you make the value of n large enough, the sum of this series should approach 1. Let’s experiment with different values for n to see how close we get." #import "Fraction.h" int main (int argc, char *argv[]) { NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; Fraction *aFraction = [[Fraction alloc] init]; Fraction *sum = [[Fraction alloc] init], *sum2; int i, n, pow2; [sum setTo: 0 over: 1]; // set 1st fraction to 0 NSLog (@"Enter your value for n:"); scanf ("%i", &n); pow2 = 2; for (i = 1; i <= n; ++i) { [aFraction setTo: 1 over: pow2]; sum2 = [sum add: aFraction]; [sum release]; // release previous sum sum = sum2; pow2 *= 2; } NSLog (@"After %i iterations, the sum is %g", n, [sum convertToNum]); [aFraction release]; [sum release]; [pool drain]; return 0; } Question: Why do we have to create additional variable sum2 that we are using in the "for" loop? Why do we need "release previous sum" here and then again give it a value that we just released? : sum2 = [sum add: aFraction]; [sum release]; // release previous sum sum = sum2; Is it just for the sake of avoiding memory leakage? (method "add" initializes a variable that is stored in sum2)

• C++ bughunt - High-score insertion in a vector crashes the program

- by Francisco P.
Hello, everyone! I have a game I'm working on. My players are stored in a vector, and, at the end of the game, the game crashes when trying to insert the high-scores in the correct positions. Here's what I have (please ignore the portuguese comments, the code is pretty straightforward :P): //TOTAL_HIGHSCORES is the max. number of hiscores that i'm willing to store. This is set as 10. bool Game::updateHiScores() { bool stopIterating; bool scoresChanged = false; //Se ainda nao existirem TOTAL_HISCORES melhores pontuacoes ou se a pontuacao for melhor que uma das existentes for (size_t i = 0; i < players.size(); ++i) { //&& !(players[i].isAI()) if (players[i].getScoreValue() > 0 && (hiScores.size() < TOTAL_HISCORES || hiScores.back() < players[i].getScore())) { scoresChanged = true; if(hiScores.empty() || hiScores.back() >= players[i].getScore()) hiScores.push_back(players[i].getScore()); else { //Ciclo que encontra e insere a pontuacao no lugar desejado stopIterating = false; for(vector<Score>::iterator it = hiScores.begin(); it < hiScores.end() && !(stopIterating); ++it) { if(*it <= players[i].getScore()) { //E inserida na posicao 'it' o Score correspondente hiScores.insert(it, players[i].getScore()); //Verifica se o comprimento do vector esta dentro do desejado, se nao estiver, este e rectificado if (hiScores.size() > TOTAL_HISCORES) hiScores.pop_back(); stopIterating = true; } } } } } if (scoresChanged) sort(hiScores.begin(), hiScores.end(), higher); return scoresChanged; } What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for your time, fellas.

• How to program a Sort feature

- by Brian Roisentul
I'm working on Ruby on rails 2.3.4 and I'm trying to develop a Sort feature on my website's search page(its url is /anuncios/buscar). What I tried is to create a "map" on routes file: map.search_filter_relevance "/anuncios/buscar", :controller => 'announcements', :action => 'search_filter_relevance' Then, I wrote this on the view: <%= link_to 'MÁS RELEVANTES', search_filter_relevance(@announcements) %> And finally, I created a method in the controller, as is specified on the routes' line: def search_filer_relevance raise params.inspect end First of all, as I'm sorting search results, I'd like to keep them in their public variable called @announcements. Please help me do this. An the other thing is that when I click the link I get an error due its trying to access the Show action instead of search_filter_relevance as specified in routes. Why is this happening?

It works but I really can't understand how can I speed it up. I saw it use 1 core out of my quad core CPU so I thought Multi-threading might work even though I don't know how. Please help me. Sorry for my English, I am from Italy.

• Getting level values from PCM raw data using Core Audio

- by John
I am trying to extract level data from a PCM audio file using core audio. I have gotten as far as (I believe) getting the raw data into a byte array (UInt8) but it is 16 bit PCM data and I am having trouble reading the data out. The input is from the iPhone microphone, which I have set as: [recordSetting setValue:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kAudioFormatLinearPCM] forKey:AVFormatIDKey]; [recordSetting setValue:[NSNumber numberWithFloat:44100.0] forKey:AVSampleRateKey]; [recordSetting setValue:[NSNumber numberWithInt:1] forKey:AVNumberOfChannelsKey]; [recordSetting setValue:[NSNumber numberWithInt:16] forKey:AVLinearPCMBitDepthKey]; [recordSetting setValue:[NSNumber numberWithBool:NO] forKey:AVLinearPCMIsBigEndianKey]; [recordSetting setValue:[NSNumber numberWithBool:NO] forKey:AVLinearPCMIsFloatKey]; which is obviously 16 bits. I am then trying to just print out a few values to see if they look reasonable for debug purposes below, and they do not look reasonable (many 0's). ExtAudioFileRef inputFile = NULL; ExtAudioFileOpenURL(track.location, &inputFile); AudioStreamBasicDescription inputFileFormat; UInt32 dataSize = (UInt32)sizeof(inputFileFormat); ExtAudioFileGetProperty(inputFile, kExtAudioFileProperty_FileDataFormat, &dataSize, &inputFileFormat); UInt8 *buffer = malloc(BUFFER_SIZE); AudioBufferList bufferList; bufferList.mNumberBuffers = 1; bufferList.mBuffers[0].mNumberChannels = 1; bufferList.mBuffers[0].mData = buffer; //pointer to buffer of audio data bufferList.mBuffers[0].mDataByteSize = BUFFER_SIZE; //number of bytes in the buffer while(true) { UInt32 frameCount = (bufferList.mBuffers[0].mDataByteSize / inputFileFormat.mBytesPerFrame); // Read a chunk of input OSStatus status = ExtAudioFileRead(inputFile, &frameCount, &bufferList); // If no frames were returned, conversion is finished if(0 == frameCount) break; NSLog(@"---"); int16_t *bufferl = &buffer; for(int i=0;i<100;i++){ //const int16_t *bufferl = bufferl[i]; NSLog(@"%d",bufferl[i]); } } Not sure what I am doing wrong, I think it has to do with reading the byte array. Sorry for the long code post...
