• Algorithm allowing a good waypoint path following?

  I'm more looking into how should I implement this, either a tutorial or even the name of the concept I'm missing. I'm pretty sure some basic pathfinding algorithm could help me here, but I dont know which one ... I have a worldmap, with different cities on it. The player can choose a city from a menu, or click on an available cities on the world map, and the toon should walk over there. But I want him to follow a predefine path. Lets say our hero is on the city 1. He clicks on city 4. I want him to follow the path to city 2 and from there to city 4. I was handling this easily with arrow movement (left right top bottom) since its a single check. Now I'm not sure how I should do this. Should I loop threw each possible path and check which one leads me to D the fastest ... and if I do how do I avoid running in circle forever with cities 1-5-2 ?

• How can create the smallest possible mirror of the archive?

  I need to create an http url at my laptop to have a Ubuntu installation begin within my laptop on a Xen environment. This is how the final thing will look like. The host and client are both going to be my laptop, I Googled and came across apt-mirror and some other packages. I do not want to archive entire 15 GB Ubuntu repositories on my machine. It is not possible to use a CD,ISO,loop mounted disk (reason mentioned below). I have tried using netboot image on local machine which failed because if you are attempting to create a virtual machine on a hardware which does not support VT virt-manager installer necessarily needs a URL of this sort http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/ Any other option to create guest OS is simply grayed out. The unfortunate part is my Ethernet connections do not work when I boot with Xen-4.0 and a pv-ops Dom0 kernel from Jeremy's tree. Which is where I have to do this work. So I have to create a URL structure which is similar to Ubuntu mirrors. So how can I do this in bare minimum so that at least the console boots and once the console comes I can do some work.

• Can't install Ubuntu on Asus Eee 1015pem

  I'm having trouble to install Ubuntu. I use a ASUS Eee 1015pem netbook. Recently, I my netbook got wet. I had it inside my backback and all my things got wet. The netbook boots up fine but it will not load the OS. I downloaded ubuntu onto my external hard drive and changed the settings in my Bios to boot from a removable device. Nothing happens. When I plug in my external hard drive I'm not able to get to the boot icon. I have to unplug it the external hard drive. Set my boot settings I tried both Removable and CD-Rom. Than I plug my external drive back in and nothing happens on either settings. My Asus never came with a recovery disk and suppose to have a build in recovery by pressing F9 in the Bios. Also I need to disable Boot Booster in Bios and Boot Booster is not even an opition in Bios. My friend told me try installing Ubuntu but now I'm having no luck with Ubuntu. Any suggestions?

• Question about mipmaps + anisotropic filtering

  I'm a bit confused here and maybe someone can explain this to me. I created a simple test texture for my terrain which is nothing more than a solid green color with a black grid overlayed on top of it. If I look at the terrain in the distance with mipmapping on and linear filtering, the grid lines become blurry fairly quickly and further back the grid is pretty much invisible. With these settings, I don't get any moire patterns at all. If I turn on anisotropic filtering, however, the higher the anisotropic level, the more the terrain looks like it did with without mipmapping. The lines are much crisper nearby but in the distance I start to see terrible moire patterns. My understanding was that mipmapping is supposed to get rid of moire patterns. I've always had anisotropic filtering on in every game I play and I've never noticed any moire patterns as a result, so I don't understand why it's happening in my game. I am using logarithmic depth however, could that be causing any problems? And if it is, how do I resolve it? • In the days of modern computing, in 'typical business apps' - why does performance matter?

  This may seem like an odd question to some of you. I'm a hobbyist Java programmer. I have developed several games, an AI program that creates music, another program for painting, and similar stuff. This is to tell you that I have an experience in programming, but not in professional development of business applications. I see a lot of talk on this site about performance. People often debate what would be the most efficient algorithm in C# to perform a task, or why Python is slow and Java is faster, etc. What I'm trying to understand is: why does this matter? There are specific areas of computing where I see why performance matters: games, where tens of thousands of computations are happening every second in a constant-update loop, or low level systems which other programs rely on, such as OSs and VMs, etc. But for the normal, typical high-level business app, why does performance matter? I can understand why it used to matter, decades ago. Computers were much slower and had much less memory, so you had to think carefully about these things. But today, we have so much memory to spare and computers are so fast: does it actually matter if a particular Java algorithm is O(n^2)? Will it actually make a difference for the end users of this typical business app? When you press a GUI button in a typical business app, and behind the scenes it invokes an O(n^2) algorithm, in these days of modern computing - do you actually feel the inefficiency? My question is split in two: In practice, today does performance matter in a typical normal business program? If it does, please give me real-world examples of places in such an application, where performance and optimizations are important.

• The best way to structure/design game code

  My question is quite broad and related to the 2D game code design/architecture/structure. Usually the main game consists of the main loop where you update & render your world states. However, it's recommended for many purposes to separate rendering from the game-logic and so on. I am kinda confused about the whole situation. Many game engines/libs/sdks don't follow separation schema. They propagate a way where you define some scenes/stages and they contain some objects and the scene/stage controls the user input and so on. For example, in cocos2d(-x) and libgdx (stage2d) the games are usually done the way that the update logic happens at the same time/place as rendering. Also, the propagated way is to have a structure where an object knows how to draw itself - which is not a separation of updating & rendering. The same with Flash based games, they are usually done the way when an object (class) contains a swf or a texture and some data and holds some update logic itself, or updated from main Scene. And again this object already knows how to draw itself via "addChild". Also, some people recommend to use MVC pattern, which will require to completely obey the structure of those engines/libs/sdks. Maybe I am overthinking everything, but I am totally confused. I would be grateful if somebody could point me to a correct direction with the game code structures. What is your way of doing things in libgdx/cocos2d/flash?

  I am trying to install a multifunctional printer Laserjet M1212nf MFP on Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded and install the hplip indicated by the official web site. At the end of the installation I chose reboot the whole system and next I call hp-setup in the terminal (as normal user and then as root). After select in the dialog box my printer I got the following error: Searching... • Just started a job with Scrum. Something seems to be missing. I am new to Scrum

  The code is a complete mess of a combination of classic ASP/ASP.NET. The scrum consist of us patching up the big mess or making additions to it. We are all too busy doing that to start a rewrite so I am wondering.. Where is the part in Scrum where the developers can have the power to say that enough is enough and demand that they are given time to start the big rewrite ? We seem in an endless loop of just patching old code with 'Stories'. So things are being run by the non-technical people who seem to have no desire to push for a rewrite because they don't understand how bad the code base has gotten.. So who is in charge of making this big rewrite change happen ? The devs? The scrum master? The current strategy is just find time and do it ourselves without the higher ups involved.. since they are mostly to blame for the current mess we are in.. <-insert rant about non-tech people telling tech people what to do here-

  Ubuntu partition does not boot. This started after a power interruption during system boot. The next time I boot, I encountered the following error message: mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/3f7f5cd9d-6ea3-4da7-b5ec-**** on /root failed: Invalid argument mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg. Busybox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) _ I've searched for similar posts here and most of the recommended solution is to reboot to the Ubuntu LiveCD. That's another problem because I cannot boot to a LIVEUSB, this is the error message I get when booting to a LiveUSB: Busybox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/sda2 on /isodevice failed: Invalid argument Could not find the ISO /ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso. This could also happen if the file system is not clean because of an operating system crash, an interrupted boot process, an improper shutdown, or unplugging of a removable device without first unmounting or ejecting it. To fix this, simply reboot into Windows, let it fully start, log in, run 'chkdsk /r', then gracefully shut down and reboot back into Windows. After this you should be able to reboot again and resume the installation. I cannot boot into Windows because I don't have a Windows partition. Do I have to install Windows to fix this problem? Is there a way to fix this in the (initramfs) prompt? Please help. Thank you!

• Interfaces and Virtuals Everywhere????

  First a disclaimer; this post is about micro-optimization of C# programs and does not apply to most common scenarios - but when it does, it is important to know. Many developers are in the habit of declaring member virtual to allow for future expansion or using interface based designs1. Few of these developers think about what the runtime performance impact of this decision is. A simple test will show that this decision can have a serious impact. For our purposes, we used a simple loop to time the execution of 1 billion calls to both non-virtual and virtual implementations of a method that took no parameters and had a void return type: Direct Call:     1.5uS Virtual Call:   13.0uS The overhead of the call increased by nearly an order of magnitude! Once again, it is important to realize that if the method does anything of significance then this ratio drops quite quickly. If the method does just 1mS of work, then the differential only accounts for a 1% decrease in performance. Additionally the method in question must be called thousands of times in order to produce a meaqsurable impact at the application level. Yet let us consider a situation such as the per-pixel processing of a graphics processing application. Here we may have a method which is called millions of times and even the slightest increase in overhead can have significant ramification. In this case using either explicit virtuals or interface based constructs is likely to be a mistake. In conclusion, good design principles should always be the driving force behind descisions such as these; but remember that these decisions do not come for free.   1) When a concrete class member implements an interface it does not need to be explicitly marked as virtual (unless, of course, it is to be overriden in a derived concerete class). Nevertheless, when accessed via the interface it behaves exactly as if it had been marked as virtual.

• Kubuntu 12.04 - DNS Issues

  Starting yesterday (6/11/12), I've been having many network problems. When requesting a page in chrome, the page hangs on "Sending request" and then will eventually timeout. I'm within a VPN that has it's own DNS server. I've tried to manually set my DNS through the Network-Manager applet and by editing /etc/network/interfaces. Having no luck I unlinked the resolv.conf file and dumped the contents of my old resolv.conf into it. Again having no luck, I deactivated the dnsmasq server in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf by commenting out the dns=dnsmasq. $ cat NetworkManager.conf [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile #dns=dnsmasq no-auto-default=D0:67:E5:EA:B6:6B, [ifupdown] managed=false $ nm-tool NetworkManager Tool State: connected (global) - Device: eth0 [Wired connection 1] ------------------------------------------- Type: Wired Driver: tg3 State: connected Default: yes HW Address: D0:67:E5:EA:B6:6B Capabilities: Carrier Detect: yes Speed: 1000 Mb/s Wired Properties Carrier: on IPv4 Settings: Address: 192.168.254.122 Prefix: 24 (255.255.255.0) Gateway: 192.168.254.2 DNS: 192.168.254.1 What is strange is that the network will work fine for a few minutes then start to timeout. A few minutes later it will work again. I'm unable to hit internal or external sites when it is timing out. When I $dig local sites, I receive no answer. I do receive an answer from google.com. At this point, I would usually blame the DNS Server, especially since when I change to Google's DNS server things work. But, I need to use our internal DNS to hit our internal sites. Nobody else is having issues and they are all using DHCP. This group includes one user who is using 11.04. At this point, I'm at a loss for what to do, so any help would be appreciated.

• Install VirtualBox Guest Additions "Feisty Fawn"

  I am trying to install the virtualbox guest additions into a feisty fawn (7.04) VM. The problem I am running into is that when I Click install guest additions, or place the iso in the drive manually, the disk never shows up in the machine. I even manually mounted and went to the mounted directory and it was empty. When using the file browser, doubling clicking on the cdrom yields Unable to mount the selected volume. mount: special device /dev/hdc does not exist. Secondly, I tried installing via repository... but according to the system, I have no internet connection. But, I can browse the web using firefox just fine (in the guest). • Lost files after installing Ubuntu

  I installed Ubuntu on my laptop over windows, I had 2 partitions on one hard disk. It seems like my second partition is gone with all my files. How can I recover the old files? They weren't on the same partition as Windows. • Why can't I mount this partition?

  I have two hard disks (80 Giga ide and 500 Giga sata) and i installed Ubuntu 11.10 in hard disk 80 giga and give for him 20 gigabyte after that he saw all partition in two hard drivers until one I see it's health in gparted magic and he can see it but can't check it and this photo the problem is on partition sdb5 and I use this command to mount it from terminal and took me this although that this partition working very well in windows and Ubuntu could mount it before please give me any solution unless format or anything well delete my data because it's very important Before when I checked /dev/sdb5, it had errors - now all program didn't appear any errors unless fdisk -l All of my hard disks can be mounted except Partition D or /dev/sdb5. What can I do? I have tried to mount the partition with many different programs like Gparted, KDE Partition Manager, ntfs-3g from the terminal, and the mount command. All of them said something to the effect of: fuse: mount failed: Device or resource busy ...or... one or more block devices are holding /dev/sdb5 I installed Ubuntu 11.10 again today to see if anything had changed. The partition works fine under Windows.

• Trouble installing Ubuntu 12.04 from USB

  I want to dual-boot Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 on my new ultrabook which has an Intel i7 3517U processor 6GB RAM Windows 7, 64-bit no CD/DVD drive I created my bootable USB stick using pendrivelinux.com with the "ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso". I am following these directions because they include nice screenshots; however, I do not get very far in the process. I am able to boot into the Live Desktop, and then I try to install onto my hard disk. Here are the series of actions that I take next: First, I see this ( http://i.imgur.com/vucYH ) window, and click 'continue' Then I get this ( http://imgur.com/2wESc ) window, and click 'continue' again This appears: and I get worried because it seems like there is no recognition that I have Windows installed. According to the directions I am following, I should see /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 partitions. In the drop-down menu at the bottom the only "Device for boot loader installation" is /dev/sdb and no information is shown. I am hesitant to click 'Install Now' for fear of what it might do to Windows. 4. I click 'Quit' and cancel the installation, but then about 5 seconds later this ( http://imgur.com/a/yXi0C ) window pops up (I have expanded it to full screen to scroll and show all the details). 5. Another second later this ( http://imgur.com/vxcrN ) comes up. I'm not sure how relevant this is. Does anyone have any insight into this issue?? Why does it not show my current Windows partition? • How to expose game data in the game without a singelton?

  I'm quite new to cocos2d and games programming, and am currently I am writing a game that is currently in Prototype stage. Everything is going okay, but I've realized a potentially big problem and I am not sure how to solve it. I am using a singelton to store a bunch of arrays for everything, a global list of planets, a global list of troops, a global list of products, etc. And only now I'm realizing that all of this will be in memory and this is the wrong way to do it. I am not storing files or anything on the disk just yet, with exception to a save/load state, which is a capture of everything. My game makes use of a map which allows you to select a planet, then it will give you a breakdown of that planets troops and resources, Lets use this scenario: My game has 20 planets. On which you can have 20 troops. Straight away that's an array of 400! This does not add the NPC, which is another 10. So, 20x10 = 200 So, now we have 600 all in arrays inside a Singelton. This is obviously very bad, and very wrong. Especially as the game scales in the amount of data. But I need to expose pretty much everything, especially on the map page, and I am not sure how else to do it. I've been told that I can use a controller for the map page which has the information I need for each planet, and other controllers for other items I require global display for. I've also thought about storing each planet's data in a save file, using initWithCoder however there could be a boatload of files on the user's device? I really don't want to use a database, mainly because I would need to translate NSObjects and non-NSObjects like CGRects and CGPoints and Colors into/from SQL. I am open to other ideas on how to store and read game data to prevent using a singelton to store everything, everywhere. Thanks for your time.
