• Why can't I create direct3d objects?

  I've been programming professionally for years using languages like VBScript, JavaScript, and C#. As a hobby, I'm getting into some c/c++ and games programming with DirectX. I am running into an issue where I cannot create direct3d objects. I am using Visual C++ 2010 Express. After I installed vc++2010express I then installed the June 2010 release of DirectX. I am trying to include DirectX via #pragma statements. This is the code I have so far in my winmain.cpp source file: #include <Windows.h> #include <d3d11.h> #include <time.h> #include <iostream> using namespace std; #pragma comment(lib, "d3d11.lib") #pragma comment(lib, "d3dx11.lib") // program settings const string AppTitle = "Direct3D in a Window"; const int ScreenWidth = 1024; const int ScreenHeight = 768; // direct3d objects LPDIRECT3D11 d3d = NULL; // this line is showing an error The type LPDIRECT3D11 is showing an error: Error: Identifier "LPDIRECT3D11" is undefined Am I missing something here to get VC++2010Express to recognize and load the DirectX libs? • Breaking The Promise of Web Service Interoperability

  The promise of web service interoperability is achievable if certain technical and non-technical issues are dealt with properly. As the world gets smaller and smaller thanks to our growing global economy the need for security is increasing. The use of security is vital in the transferring of data from one server to another. As new security standards and protocols are created, the environments for web service hosts and clients must be in sync so that they can communicate on the same standard and protocols. For example, if a new protocol x can only be implemented on computers built after 2010 then all computers built prior to 2010 will not be able to connect to any web service hosts that only use this protocol in its security policy. If both the host and client of a web service cannot communicate using a set of common standards and protocols then web services are not available to these clients thus breaking the promise of interoperability. Another limiting factor of web services is governmental policies and regulations. I have experienced this first hand last year when I had to work on a project that dealt with personally identifiable information (PII) regarding US and Canadian Citizens. Currently the Canadian government regulates that any data pertaining to Canadian citizens must be store in Canada only. The issue that we had was that fact that we are a US based company that sometimes works with Canadian PII as part of a service that we provide. As you can see we are US based company and dealing with Canadian Data, so we had to place a file server inside the border of Canada in order for us to continue working for our Canadian customers.

• The year ahead, 2011.

  When I look back at last years look at 2010 my blogging rate has not changed much (I suspect this is largely down to using Twitter a lot) but my interests this year have developed a lot further. My view on 2010 would be that Microsoft would commit more to OSS, while I wanted to see more hires from that audience and more projects on Outercurve foundation instead there has been support for JQuery and Gems (aka NuGet). I would love to see more from Microsoft on the OSS front in 2011, Outercurve could become like the Apache foundation with enough support. Staying on the Microsoft front I predict that 2011 will bring the following. C# 5.0 will go RTM (still no MOP though) The next release of VS will go alpha or early beta MS MVC 4.0 (I think by Mix time) and maybe this release will get a command line. I also suspect that Microsoft will want to target the tablet market with WP7 in 2011 (Mix 2011 maybe...). I also predict the following Java will fork with Apache\Google. Oracle will then take them to court and the whole thing will boil right through 2011 (Java have had enough court cases, come on guys). Java and the JVM will sadly not move forward at all in 2011. Android will cause Apple a serious headache, both the smartphone and tablet market will see figures cut from Apple share. By the end of 2011 the current 70% apple market share will be 40-50%. As the features, performance and price of Android devices gets ever better Apple will be left out in the open. Lastly after 7 years I intend to move this blog away from weblogs. In 2011 I will be exploring Java, Ruby\Rails and Android and such subjects don't make sense to talk about it here. See you in 2011.

Is there any way to begin the command with something to look for one of the new themes/charts already pushed down, and if it's present, then have it not run? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as I'm pretty new to these batch files.

  I've setup a Varnish cache mirror to sit in front of a file server, but it seems to be endlessly re-downloading data from my file server. There's about 100GB of data in total, but so far Varnish has downloaded 800GB from my file server. I am getting the following error when running Install-SPSolution for one of my web parts: Install-SPSolution : This solution contains no resources scoped for a Web application and cannot be deployed to a particular Web application. Can someone help me debug this? Every other Install-SPSolution command uses -AllWebApplications, and I do not want to specify the web application directly using -URL.   I have a MacBook Pro with the 2.4 Core 2 Duo and 4 GB RAM. I want to run Windows 7 for ASP.NET development within VMWare Fusion. Since I may be doing some SharePoint 2010 work I was thinking that my install of Windows 7 would need to be the 64 bit version because SharePoint 2010 requires 64 bit Windows. As I am new to Mac OS (I am running v10.6.3) I am not sure if it would support a 64 bit OS in a Virtual Machine. Thoughts?

• PowerShell 3.0 x64 bit broken after installing KB2506143

  I have searched using all kinds of variations on relevant terms and I cannot find a single other instance of someone else having this excact same problem, so I am hoping someone here may have a clue. Problem I installed Windows Management Framework 3.0 (KB2506143) by downloading and running Windows6.1-KB2506143-x64.msu from Microsoft.com. Once completed I rebooted my machine as requested. After rebooting and logging in, I try to run the 64-bit PowerShell command shell and it comes up for a second then goes away. The 32-bit shell seems to work fine, it is just the 64-bit one that fails. Looking in the Fusion logs, I found: *** Assembly Binder Log Entry (10/4/2012 @ 1:51:48 PM) *** The operation failed. Bind result: hr = 0x80070002. The system cannot find the file specified. The update fixes, among other things: Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed. i'm not experiencing it on my own Windows 7 machine, but two colleagues at work were experiencing the problem. i would really like to know what applications were causing problems. Microsoft will never call out the misbehaving applications. i want to know what software i should be ridiculing and insulting. And avoid in the future. Did anyone who was experiencing this problem isolate the applications?

• Migrating Printers from XP to 7 (using USMT 4.0)

  I'm attempting to migrate a user from an XP machine to a 7 machine, using USMT 4.0 (User State Migration Tool, from Microsoft). For some reason the migration of printers isn't working, and none of the topics at Microsoft's TechNet are helping me out. • Windows Embedded Compact 7

  This will be the official name of the new release of Windows CE. Windows Embedded Compact 7 is available as a public CTP and it already supports a wide range of CPUs and both the device emulator and VirtualPC emulated environments. So I’ll have to learn a new (and longer) name for my favorite OS… but I (and all my two readers!) will be able to test it as soon as the download from connect web site completes (I'm sorry for my readers, but you'll have to download it by yourselves).   I am running Office Communicator 2007 R2 and Outlook 2010 on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010. I am storing my conversation history from Communicator in Exchange in the default folder, "Conversation History". I'm using the conversation view in Outlook. And I have a Gmail-like macro to archive my conversations to an "Archive" folder. I want to search all my mail and conversations at once. By default, Outlook is searching in the current folder only. I tried creating a rule to move the conversations to my Archive folder, but couldn't configure it correctly.

• Proxy Error 502 "Reason: Error reading from remote server" with Apache 2.2.3 (Debian) mod_proxy and Jetty 6.1.18

  Apache is receiving requests at port :80 and proxying them to Jetty at port :8080 The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server The proxy server could not handle the request GET /. My dilemma: Everything works fine normally (fast requests, few seconds or few tens of seconds long requests are processed ok). Problems occur when request processing takes long (few minutes?). If I issue request instead directly to Jetty at port :8080 the request is processed OK. So problem is likely to sit somewhere between Apache and Jetty where I am using mod_proxy. How to solve this? I have already tried some "tricks" related to KeepAlive settings, without luck. • FTP script download from linux to windows

  I'm using following FTP script on windows xp to download zip files from ubuntu cloud servers. A zip file is created every day on ubutnu servers and I will download it to windows via this ftp script. I run this script everyday manually as I have to edit the last line(mget /usr/backup_02-11-2010.Zip) of the script to match today's date. I want to edit this script so that it will download only today's zip file at the scheduled time without needing to edit it everyday, when scheduled. It's clear that date is appended to the zip files and is in the format dd-mm-yyyy. • Cannot delete a SharePoint web application

  What I have? I have normal web application and it has 3 site collections with name, "PDirectory". Other than this I have only Central administration web application in the farm. What I want? I want to delete that web application, "PDirectory". What problem am I facing? I am not able to delete the web application. I get below error when I try to delete it but, the site collections got deleted! Error: An object in the SharePoint administrative framework, "SPWebApplication Name=XXX Parent=SPWebService", could not be deleted because other objects depend on it. Update all of these dependants to point to null or different objects and retry this operation.
