• XSL: Dead or not dead

  I'm currently taking on a new project at home. In this project I'm going to be generating HTML emails. For this purpose, I believe XSL to be a good candidate. However, I have heard people say that XSL is a dead language, and if it's not that it is on it's way out. In fact, MS has been very leary to support XSL 2.0. Personally I feel that any time you are going from text to text, it is a great tool. Such as: Generating HTML e-mails Creating Open Office Docs Generating another XML doc What are your thoughts? Is it dead, or is it still a viable, usefull tool?

• Sparx Enterprise Architect conversion (from source to UML)

  I need to make a UML class diagram for a project. I used Sparx Enterprise Architect in the past to generate source code from a diagram so I'm using that. The project is complete so all of the code is done and I don't really want to write all the classes / functions manually, so I was trying to generate the diagram from the source code but can't seem to find a way to do it. • Generating code for service proxies

  I'm trying to generate some additional code base on the auto-generated webservice proxies in my VS2010 solution, I'm using a T4 template to do so. The problem is, automatically generated proxies are added in "Service Reference" folder but ProjectItems (files) are hidden by default and the following code does not find them in the project structure: var sr = GetProjectItem(project, "Service References"); if(sr != null) { foreach(ProjectItem item in sr.ProjectItems) { foreach(var file in item.ProjectItems) { //Services.Add(new ServiceInfo { Name = file.Name }); } } } The above code runs and although service reference is found, and there are ProjectItems under that node (named by the webservice reference name), under object under that node is of type System.__ComObject and I'm not sure how to progress. Any help is appreciated.

• iPhone: Interface Builder leaks memory?

  I have been working on an iPhone project, where we created all the user interface programmatically in code. Now I'm going to start a new iPhone project and thinking of using Interface Builder instead, because it has been recommended to me as being a very useful tool, creating less headache than writing everything in code and in general much faster (regarding development time). However, my team members have some concerns due to previous problems with using Interface Builder and resulting memory leaks. Therefor they suggest building everything in code again. I don't know where these concerns come from, but maybe someone with more experience than we have can give some insight on that topic. Doing a simple Google search doesn't really provide any information proofing that there are any problems with memory leaks created by the Interface Builder itself.

• Bulk stop watching tickets on Lighthouse?

  Via the Lighthouse user interface, is there any way to bulk stop watching tickets? I have more than 150 tickets on a project I want to stop watching, and would just as soon not go into each and every one of them. I thought the bulk edit command might work, but there doesn't appear to be a watch keyword in the bulk edit stuff (which is fair enough, I'm not really editing the tickets). When I go to my profile, I can subscribe or unsubscribe to an entire project, but I'm not seeing a way to do this at the (bulk) ticket level. Looking at a list of the tickets I'm watching, I'm not seeing a way to do anything to all of them (other than the bulk edit command of course). Is there something I'm missing?

• VS2008: Disable asking whether to reload files changed outside the IDE

  Hi, I have a Visual Studio 2008 project where some code files are generated with each build (a parser, integrated via MSBuild aka editing the *.csproj file). VS does not know about the generated nature of these files (i.e. they are not the result of a "Custom Tool). So they "change" with every build, naturally. And VS2008 asks me after every build if I would like to reload those files: This file has been modified outside the source Do you want to reload it? That would be ok if I had one of those files opened and in front of me, but I get these modal dialogs even with none of the code files opened. So my question is: Is there a way to disable this dialog, per project, per solution or globally? Thanks!

  I'd like to start using a Test Driven Development system for a private project since I saw my employer using it and realized it was very useful. My employer's project was in C# but mines are in C and C++. I looked around and saw that several packages exist for both Java and .NET (for example: NCover, NUnit, ...). Unfortunately I found it difficult to find good C++ testing frameworks. Do you know of any unit testing frameworks that satisfy the following requirements? IMPORTANT: Must provide code coverage statistics, as I'd like to have some idea of how well my tests cover my code-base. Must be free Usable with C++ projects EDIT: To be clear, I know of many existing unit test frameworks. The code coverage piece is what's most important.

  We're looking into implementing an issue tracker for our web agency. The problem is that most issue trackers seem to revolve around the assumption that an issue is a bug, whereas in a web agency environment, a lot of the issues (request, or whatever you want to call them) are about changes and additions to a current web site. It also seems to me that a lot of issue trackers assume that you're working on one main software project, and uses that project as the focus of the tracker. A good issue tracker for a web agency would be one which puts each separate client and their issues at the heart of the system, making it easy for them to track and report issues. Does anyone know of a good issue tracker for the web agency workflow? What are other people using?

  So I have been working on a java project where the goal is to create a virtual computer. So I am basically done but with one problem. I have created a compiler which translates a txt document with assembly code in it and my compiler has created a new-file with this code written as machine executable ints. But now I need to write a load method that reads these ints and runs the program but I am having difficulty doing this. Any help is much appreciated....also this is not homework if you are thinking this. The project was simply to make a compiler and now I am trying to complete it for my own interest. Thanks. • Silverlight Pixel Shader resource "not found"; what should the URI be?

  So I've written and compiled an HLSL pixel shader with Shazzam, placed the resulting .ps file in my project, and am trying to instantiate it. No matter what URI I put, Blend tells me that the resource can't be found whenever I try to view any xaml designer, and Visual Studio just shows me a blank page, both in design view and if I try to run the application. This is a Silverlight 4 SketchFlow project, in Blend 4 RC and Visual Studio 2010. I've tried both Resource and EmbeddedResource as the Build Action for the .ps file, neither make any difference (I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be set to Resource). I've tried the following URI formats: "ShaderFileName.ps" "/ShaderFileName.ps" "AssemblyName;component/ShaderFileName.ps" "/AssemblyName;component/ShaderFileName.ps" I also tried moving the shader file from the Screens assembly to the root assembly (that's how SketchFlow projects are created) and that didn't help either. Anyone have any thoughts?

• Start multiple processes of a dll in delphi

  I have a "ActiveX library" project created with Delphi 2007. The library interface return XML data based on input values. This is then used by a PHP script that displays the data on a web page. This works great! The problem is that i can only run one instance of the dll process on the server. However, for security reasons, each of my customer should be able to access their own process of the dll (because the dll is always connected to only one database). Also, because of the way the delphi code is built, it doesn't support multiple threads. (It's a 100 000+ lines project using lots of singleton classes) Is there a way of starting several instances of the same dll? Is there a better way of transferring XML data from delphi to PHP? Sorry for the longish question, any help is appreciated (ps. I know the delphi code should be refactored, but this would mean 6 months of "circular reference" -hell :)

• New hire expectations... (Am I being unreasonable?)

  I work for a very small custom software shop. We currently consist me and my boss. My boss is an old FoxPro DOS developer and OOP makes him uncomfortable. He is planning on taking a back seat in the next few years to hopefully enjoy a “partial retirement”. I will be taking over the day to day operations and we are now desperately looking for more help. We tried Monster.com, Dice.com, and others a few years ago when we started our search. We had no success. We have tried outsourcing overseas (total disaster), hiring kids right out of college (mostly a disaster but that’s where I came from), interns (good for them, not so good for us) and hiring laid off “experienced” developers (there was a reason they were laid off). I have heard hiring practices discussed on podcasts, blogs, etc... and have tried a few. The “Fizz Buzz” test was a good one. One kid looked physically ill before he finally gave up. I think my problem is that I have grown so much as a developer since I started here that I now have a high standard. I hear/read very intelligent people podcasts and blogs and I know that there are lots of people out there that can do the job. I don’t want to settle for less than a “good” developer. Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable. I expect any good developer (entry level or experienced) to be billable (at least paying their own wage) in under one month. I expect any good developer to be able to be productive (at least dangerous) in any language or technology with only a few days of research/training. I expect any good developer to be able to take a project from initial customer request to completion with little or no help from others. Am I being unreasonable? What constitutes a valuable developer? What should be expected of an entry level developer? What should be expected of an experienced developer? I realize that everyone is different but there has to be some sort of expectations standard, right? I have been giving the test project below to potential canidates to weed them out. Good idea? Too much? Too little? Please let me know what you think. Thanks. Open your project in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. 2. Under Project, select Properties. 3. In Properties, select Manifest Tool, and then select Input and Output. 4. Add in the name of your application manifest file under Additional manifest files. 5. Rebuild your application. But i am getting lot of Syntax errors Is there any problems in the way which i followed.If i commented the line define MANIFEST_RESOURCE_ID 1 MANIFEST_RESOURCE_ID RT_MANIFEST "myproject.exe.manifest" which added in Myproject.h for adding values in .rc file there willnot any error other than this general error c1010070: Failed to load and parse the manifest. • Developing Qt applications in Unix systems using Qt Creator

  I'm developing a Qt application in Linux using Qt Creator (2.1 RC). I've created 2 projects, and used the wizard to add the library project to the application project. However when I run it, I receive the error: /home/jakepetroules/silverlock/silverlock-build-desktop/desktop/silverlock: error while loading shared libraries: libsilverlocklib.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Is there some qmake variable I can set so that Qt Creator will set up the environment properly to run? It's quite annoying to have to copy all the files to another directory with a launcher script just to be able to test the build. On Windows it works perfectly - Qt Creator automatically adds the directories containing the DLLs to the PATH when it runs your application (where running it from Explorer would say DLL not found). Mac OS X is even worse, having to run install_name_tool on everything... So how can I set up my qmake files so everything works right from the run button in Qt Creator? Kind of hard to debug without this ability, too.

• How do I create queries to SQL Server tables via Visual Studio when no knowledge about SQL nor Linq?

  Let´s be frank, my knowledge regarding SQL language is very low. Nevertheless, my boss gave me the task to build a database application using the following tools: SQL Server and Visual Studio 2008; C#. I use the VS DataSet as a local mirror of the SQL Server. And let´s be frank again, my understanding of the VS Query builder is also very small, I´m finding it quite confusing, actually. So no help to find from Query builder. And my knowledge of Linq is even lower... Perhaps I should mention that the deadline for the project is "aggressively" set, so I have no chance to learn enough about these things during the project. And I´m a bit stupid too, which is no help when it comes to challenges like this (on other occations it might be quite useful though) With these permissions, what should I do (except for killing myself or retire) to be able to query my tables in a sufficient way?

• What are the common issues that can cause slow boot times of Windows CE6 Images?

  I am relatively new to Platform Builder, and whilst I am able to produce nk.bin files, they boot very slowly, 80-100 seconds, so I think there may be some checkbox somewhere that I need to set (or clear)! I've already removed kitl, profiling, etc in the project settings, and set the project to 'release build' & 'ship'. When I looked at the startup event log (in debug), there doesn't appear to be any specific point where it is slow. The log pretty much scrolls all the way through with no major pauses. One thing I found strange was that although the nk.bin file was a lot smaller in release build (just under 12Mb), the boot time didn't noticeably change from the debug build... The board is a Vortex86DX_60A and I'm building CE6. Are there any 'common builder mistakes' that I may be missing here, or is this going to be something a little deeper?

  I basically want to use the XML parser from Qt in my existing project. I have only used Qt once before, and that was with Qt Designer, and I am not having much luck finding anything on Google about how to just use the XML library. I have downloaded a web page that has one large list, and I want to parse it and add each list item to a c++ list. I found this sample code on Ubuntu forums... http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9112973&postcount=6 I want to use that except I need to know what exactly I need to add to the project to get access to it. One other small question is QDomDocument seems to be for files (makes sense) but I have the XML in a string. What part of the XML library works for contents of a string?

• SA_OAuthTwitterEngine and MGTwitterEngine retweet doesn't works

  I'm developing an iOS app with Twitter features. To do that I'm using SA_OAuthTwitterEngine and MGTwitterEngine wrappers. I've followed this post. I'm trying to retweet a tweet from the followed user timeline. This is what I send/receive: 2012-04-12 18:34:00.291 Project[13605:207] INFO -> Twitter URL: https://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/retweet/190459190869753856.xml 2012-04-12 18:34:00.292 Project[13605:207] INFO -> retweet response: 0AFF2EF9-6BCC-4B1E-B65A-02BD24A38C18 Here I pass to the API the id field of the selected tweet which I want to retweet. But after execute the method, the retweeted doesn't appears in the user timeline, where I'm getting the user tweets and tweets retweeted by user. What I'm loosing here? According with this the request to the Twitter API is ok. And I've checked the app permissions setted in twitter and have all: read/write and direct messages. Thanks.

  As a concluding assignment for the technologies taught in a data management course, we have to write a web application using the technologies taught throughout the course, this mostly includes xhtml, css, JSP, servelets, JDBC, AJAX, webservices. the project will eventually be deployed using tomcat. we are given the option of choosing the technologies that we see fit. since this is my first time developing a web application I am having some uncertainties about where to start, so for example now I am writing the object classes that will be used in the database and implementing the operations that will be performed on the database, but I am not sure about how to make these operations available to a client through the website, I mean I think I have to write a servlet through which I can extract the request parameters and set the response accordingly, but I would still like a more specific overview of what I am going to do, so if someone can link me to a tutorial with an example that makes use of these technologies while illustrating the stages of the design so that I can see how all these things are linked together in a web project. thanks

• MySQL dual license behavior

  Hi SO, I'm running a commercial(closed source) Web App development for the first time. Initially I considered MySQL the most feasible option for a DB, until I get quite confused about its dual license behavior. If I want a commercial application do I still can use the GPL version of MySQL or I must get a license? The same question in a different way: If I use MySQL's GPL version does that force me to license the whole app under GPL? Either case I would go with PostgreSQL, I just want to make really really sure about this. Even in SO I've seen related("duplicates") questions but never a clear answer... All other tools I'm gonna use to code the project are licensed under BSD or MIT. Just in case, the role of MySQL in the project is merely as relational DB to store persistent data and query it.   Hi all My situation is. I have a project planned to be built on ASP.NET MVC 2. And one of the major requirements is SEO optimization. A customer wants to use static-like URLs that end up with .html extension for this project that make URLs more SEO friendly. E.g. "mysite.com/about.html " or "mysite.com/items/getitem/5.html" etc. I wonder is there any benefit from SEO perspective to use .html extension in dynamic URLs? Are Google and other search engines rank work better with such URLs?
