• Android - Notification bar height from a service

  Hi, The application I'm working on is a service which runs in the background in android. The problem is that I need to determine the height of the notification bar for some functionality of the service. I found a number of solutions for this, for regular activities - a view inside an activity can determine its own height without the notification bar, based on checking its actual view size from its onSizeChanged event, after it is already drawn. However, this is not applicable to a service which has no physical view drawn. I would really appreciate any ideas on getting the size of the notification bar at a system level, perhaps? • What is the equivalent to Java's canvas object in C#?

  I'm working on creating a basic application that will let a user draw (using a series of points) and I plan to do something with these points. If this were Java, I think I would probably use a canvas object and some Java2D calls to draw what I want. All the tutorials I've read on C#/Drawing involve writing your own paint method and adding it to the paint event for the form. However, I'm interested in having some traditional Form controls as well and I don't want to be drawing over them. So, is there a "Canvas" object where I can constrain what I'm drawing on? Also, is WinForms a poor choice given this use case? Would WPF have more features that would help enable me to do what I want? Or Silverlight?

• Create iPhone app programmatically, in its entirety

  I recently became interested in iPhone app development, so I've been looking at online tutorials, and also reading a book, trying out the examples as I go along. I'm getting better, but one of the things I still find quite annoying about the usual development model is that I really have no idea what the SDK is really doing behind the scenes to make the app "work" because Apple protects me from this. For example, when I make connections on interface builder, this presumably corresponds to code being generated somewhere... Where that code is and what it does and how it works are not obvious (to me). So I'm wondering, is it possible to create an iPhone app entirely programmatically? That is, have execution start in some main method, which will then programmatically create any views, register event listeners, etc. And if yes, what are some good resources for something like this?

• Response.Redirect() will not redirect on Internet Explorer

  Hi, I am using Response.Redirect("someurl",true); in the page_preInit event to redirect all the requests that come to a page. It works fine on Firexox, but if i access the page from internet explorer 7/8, it says page can not be found and will not redirect to new URL. Any idea why this happens?? Update: I tried giving a radom URL in the redirect such as google.com and it works fine. Actually the URL I am trying to redirect is not accessible on my machine, it is on another VPN. I guess IE will not change the URL on the addressbar if it can not access the URL. Firefox on the other hand changes the address on the address bar.

• How to check all check boxes at a click of a button

  I am new to Swing, UI and MVC I have created a code based on MVC. Now my problem is that that in the controller part i have an actioneventlistener which listens to different button clicks. Out of all those buttons i have "select all" and "de-select all". In my view i have a table, one of the column of that table contains "check boxes". Now, when i click the "select-all" button i want to check all the check boxes and with "de-select all" i want to uncheck all of them. Below is my code which is not working. Please tell me what am i doing wrong here. Also, if someone knows a more elagent way please share. • Resizing JPopupMenu and avoiding a "flicker" issue

  Hi, I am trying to implement a search results popup list similar to the style found here: http://www.inquisitorx.com/ (I'm not trying to implement a Google search, I'm just using this as a rough example of the style I'm working on.) In any event, I am implementing this by using a JList contained within a JPopupMenu which is popped up underneath a JTextField. When a user enters search terms, the list changes to reflect different matching results. I then call pack on the JPopupMenu to resize it. This works, however, it creates a slight flicker effect since it is actually hiding the popup and showing a popup. (See the private method getPopup in JPopupMenu where it explicitly does this.) Is there any way to just get it to just resize itself (aside from using a JWindow)?

A quick search of stack-overflow told me I need to use something called a background worker.   I have a tricky problem. I am in a situation where I need to use a method defined in a .cs file from a javascript function. The problem is we are using .NET 1.1 and AJAX cannot be used for the application. Also, I will need to pass a string from the javascript to the server side method. The page where I am implementing the javascript is a .as Any ideas? I have tried doing a post back and creating a RaisePostBack event handler method (both in the .aspx page and the .ascx user control) but no luck. It will be greatly appreciated if someone could help me out with the problem.

The farthest I've gotten is knowing it involves Win32 Hooking and that there's this open source project called EasyHook that's supposed to allow me to do this. I'd like to know how I can get the text from a textbox or some other data from a control in a third-party Win32 application. The text/data in a control is to be captured from the external application's running window the moment the user presses a button. I guess the question can be summed up as follows: How do you determine the event to hook to when the user clicks a certain button? How do you get the value displayed by a Win32 control at the time the button is clicked?

Problem is, in Chrome it won't display, works fine in IE, in firefox the 5 values display and then the original page w/anchor appears! • JSON Date coming through as Today's date?

  I'm trying to convert a JSON date to a dd/mm/yyyy format, which I'm managing to do semi-successfully. The problem I'm encountering is that the date from the record in the DB is for example, 2009-06-29 which is returning the usual JSON /Date(1246230000000)/, however, when I try and turn it into the previously mention dd/mm/yyyy format, it's coming through as today's date. • Is MonoTouch worth the cost or should I just learn Objective-C?

  After sitting through a session today on Mono at a local .Net event, the use of MonoTouch was 'touched' upon as an alternative for iPhone development. Being very comfortable in C# and .Net, it seems like an appealing option, despite some of the quirkiness of the Mono stack. However, since MonoTouch costs $400, I'm somewhat torn on if this is the way to go for iPhone development. Anyone have an experience developing with MonoTouch and Objective-C, and if so is developing with MonoTouch that much simpler and quicker than learning Objective-C, and in turn worth the $400?

  I've a ASP.NET MVC 2 project that runs fine under Windows 7 and will start on Windows XP if I use the Visual Studio Development Server, however, starting under IIS generates an error: Unable to start debugging on the web server With the message The specified procedure could not be found No errors in the system event viewer. If I start without debugging I get an "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error" The reason I run it under IIS is the project also includes some WCF wsHttp web services that use certificates, so the VS Development Server is not adequate for hosting those. I have already seen the links on SO that talk about adding the wildcard mapping. I've already done that, just as I've done on Windows Server 2003 where I successfully host ASP.NET MVC RC2 for quite a while.

  I am trying to make an information label that should display the events the application doing. deleting data, reading data, writing data, connection to db. etc.. I've added a label to my form and I am changing its text property for each operation like: label1.Text = "stored procedure is being executed.."; But, in the run time the text of the label does not change. I've tried to add the method Application.DoEvents(); to every place I've changed the label's text property. It works fine. But it looks silly. So I've tried to add this method to my label's "TextChanged" event. But it does not work! Am I doing something wrong? Or, is there any efficient way to make an information label?
