  • 1Tb disk formatted on Linux won't mount on windows nor mac

    I have an external HD (western digital) with 1Tb. I use Linux but I wanted to reserve a cross platform partition on the disk. I decided to create two partitions and used the "disks" application to do it. I created one partition with the LUKS (version 1) encryption and the other one, cross platform, in NTFS filesystem. Things work fine on my OS but when I try to use the disk (the cross platform partition) on both windows and mac the device is not recognized. What could it be?   • Copying symbolic links and filenames with special characters to NAS

    I have a new Western Digital My Book Live NAS. I am trying to copy files from an old drive to the NAS. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and I've mounted the drive by browsing the network in Nautilus and choosing a shared folder configured on the NAS. The shared folder is then automatically mounted at .gvfs/files on mybooklive. There are two problems so far: File names and directory names containing certain characters (e.g. : or |). Attempting to copy these results in the error message: cp: cannot stat `/path/to/destination.filename': Invalid argument Symbolic links. In Nautilus I get the error message: Symlinks not supported by backend My questions are: Can I connect to the NAS or configure the NAS so that I can copy my files without this problem? (In case it matters, I don't need Windows compatibility.) If not, what can I do to identify all the problem files? Can I do anything to automatically fix my filenames Please let me know if any of this needs clarification. I'm not too familiar with all of this so I may have left out some useful information.

  • Windows 7 playback of dvr-Microsoft files stutters

    I've just had to install Windows 7 on my Media Center machine because my Vista installation had a faulty drive. I've got the latest drivers that I can find - Intel 945GM integrated Graphics, Realtek audio drivers. Things are working OK with one exception. Playback of old recordings, from dvr-Microsoft format files, is choppy. The picture freezes for a fraction of a second, then quickly catches up. The sound is uninterrupted and doesn't pause. These freezes happen once every 5 seconds or so. It's very regular. Playback of Live TV from the digital tuner is perfectly smooth. DVD playback is perfectly smooth. As an experiment, I used the MPEG editing package VideoReDo to create a small test file in three different formats. This program takes the raw MPEG streams and repackages them into the desired container. I took the same clip and created three files in three formats: dvr-Microsoft (Microsoft's old recorded TV format); mpg (standard MPEG); and ts (raw MPEG transport stream of the kind often produced by PVRs). When these three files are played back under Windows 7, the mpg and ts files play smoothly, but the dvr-Microsoft file stutters. The last piece of data I have is that two other Windows 7 machines can play back dvr-Microsoft files smoothly with no stuttering. One is a netbook, with less grunt than the media centre. So there must be something specific about my Media Center machine that's causing the problem. Does anyone have any idea where I can look now? I don't know much about AV software, codecs, filter graphs etc. but I suspect that's where the problem lies. Rendering the video isn't the problem, but extracting the streams is. How would I go about diagnosing the problem? Edited to add: I just used the GraphStudio tool to look at the filter graph on the offending PC. The filter graph it uses by default for dvr-Microsoft looks identical to the other machines, and, interestingly, when I play the files using GraphStudio they run smoothly. Under Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center they stutter. I'd like to see the filter graph for Windows Media Player but GraphStudio won't show it. It looks like Windows Media Player and WMC are using a different decoding path to GraphStudio. Edited again to add: Today I purchased a new HDTV. The same Media Center driving the TV at 1080p is now playing back the old Recorded TV files smoothly, without stuttering. So whatever the cause of the original problem, using a different resolution seems to have removed the problem. It might also explain why nobody else has had this problem. I doubt many people use Media Centre with a 14in portable TV.

    I want to rearrange rows with the mouse in Calc. In Excel, I select the whole row, then drag and drop it while holding SHIFT. This causes the drag and drop cursor to turn into a bar rather than cells, and the cells are inserted at the bar's position. Is there a way to accomplish the same sort of thing in Calc without going round the houses inserting columns before the drag operation?

  • Error message: do not have authority to access this function

    Hi. I just reinstalled Windows on my computer after getting a virus. I worked with it for a while and everything worked as it should. I then used a backup of the computer that I had made a week or so earlier and copied the backup over my user folder. (That is, I took the folder named "Joe" from the backup drive and copied-replaced the whole thing over the folder named "Joe" on the new Windows install.) To do this I had to work from an Ubuntu live CD because some of the files were in use. Now the problem: After I did this copying my computer says that I have no authority. Anytime I try to access anything that is part of the operating system (Explorer, Personalize, Control Panel, etc) I get an error message that says I don't have the authority to do this. I am able to access things that aren't part of the OS: Chrome, Firefox, my accounting software, Rockbox, but nothing that is part of the OS. I only copied over the User file, so I didn't mess with the registry or anything, so I have no idea why this should be. Does anyone out in cyberspace have any idea? Thank you.

    when viewing a television program using Internet Explorer/Firefox/Chrome/SeaMonkey/Safari it constantly pauses unless I have some kind of activity with either the mouse or the keyboard. The browser with the least amount of problems is SeaMonkey, the one with the most is Internet Explorer. Annie idea of what is causing this or how to prevent it?     A while ago I got fed up with continuously finding w3schools in my search results when I wanted detailed, technically correct information. To fix this without having to continuously append -site:w3schools.com to my search queries, I used google's Manage Blocked Sites page. For a while this worked perfectly, no more results from unwanted sites. Recently, however, I've been seeing w3schools litter my search results. Is there a new way to remove a site from google search results? -or- Is this just a bug that I should report?

    Answer: Parts of the hard drive are corrupted. All of my user's code was checked in, so I'm just going to format the box. One of my users has an HP DV5-1235dx laptop running Windows Vista Professional x64. Last night, our WSUS server pushed out a few updates including "Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB960859)". When we try to boot the laptop today, a black screen with white text comes up displaying: xxx/169894 (something) Where xxx increments rapidly and something is some dll or registry key. Eventually that stops and the screen displays !! 0xc01a00d !! 35566/169894 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedDat...) No other computers that received this update are displaying the same error. So far I've tried running CHKDSK off of HBCD. It repaired a thing or two, but the computer still doesn't boot. I tried repairing the Windows install from the Vista CD, but I get a black screen with white text displaying something along the lines of: 0 No Emulation System Type 00 1 No Emulation System Type 00 Select one of the above Booting in Last Known Good Configuration doesn't work. Booting in Safe Mode freezes at Loading Windows Files [snip] Loaded: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys Please wait... My next step is trying to boot Safe Mode with Command Prompt and try to run rstrui.exe. While I do that, does anybody have any guidance? Edit: Booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt will not work. See Booting in Safe Mode above. Edit 2: I managed to boot from the Vista DVD.     I'm trying to install LibreOffice on a machine running a Korean version of Windows XP. I don't know Korean. I haven't used Windows with any frequency in many years, so I'm pretty lost. When I run the installer, it shows up in Korean. But, I want to customize the installation, so I need the installer to be in English. Googling took me to this page, where I found an example command to run the installer in Gaelic, which I modified for my system as follows: msiexec /i LibO_3.6.1_Win_x86_install_multi.msi TRANSFORMS=:1084 This works, except that I know less about Gaelic than I do about Korean. The help page provided a link to a page where I could look up the ID codes. From that page, I determined that the correct code was 1033 for US English and 2057 for UK English. When I substituted the code, I got an error message. Here's the messages as translated by Google, followed by the original: Transform can not be applied.Verify that the specified transform paths are valid. ?? ??? ??? ? ????. ??? ?? ??? ???? ?????. I can't very well search on a machine translation, so I don't know where to go from here.What is the problem? How can I make the installer operate in English? Alternatively, how can I change XP to display its interface in English, while keeping full functionality for typing in Korean?

  • How can I automate FTP downloads based on date without bi-directional syncing?

    I have a particular FTP-related situation that I'm having trouble finding a solution for. I need an FTP download/syncing application that can operate within the following parameters: It must run under Windows (installing Python to be able to run a script or some such thing is an acceptable solution). It must be able to ignore files before a certain date (I want to start downloading new files, not all the files that exist in this very large FTP directory). I don't want bi-directional syncing (e.g. I don't want changes I make to the local files and directory structure to change the remote FTP server, the FTP server needs to be left completely alone). Automating it in some fashion would be ideal. What would you guys suggest? The solutions I'm turning up are all missing the mark in some fashion (e.g. they have bi-directional syncing or they have no way of starting the syncing today instead of trying to pull down the entire directory).

  • I install Ubuntu 13.10 and reboot and im on KDE desktop?

    Hi I'm Jacob and I have no idea what's going on. I installed Ubuntu 13.10 today and was playing around with it for a while and dl'd a bunch of apps from software center and stuff. Eventually I installed steam and (finally) got it working. I downloaded TF2 and had some weird issue where the screen got so distorted to the point I could not play. So I dl'd a driver for my graphics card from the additional drivers app (or whatever it's called) and when it was done I restarted my computer (because it said to.) When the PC booted up it loaded the KDE desktop and I have no idea why. I had unity before I rebooted. Ubuntu 13.10 is the only OS installed on my PC, and I still have all the apps that I downloaded, but I kinda like unity (I started using Ubuntu after they switched to unity) and want it back.     I was wondering if there was a way to schedule automatic FTP site backup with any free or open-source software? Clients like FileZilla do not have an automatic backup (ftp download) option. Is there a way to schedule this with any program, by using the windows task scheduler? Or maybe we need to use a macro program like imacro in combination with FireFTP to do the job? Do you think using macro is a feasible and secure(reliable) solution?

  • Changing the interface language in Windows 7 Home Premium

    A friend of mine has recently purchased a laptop in the U.S. that has Windows 7 Home Premium on it with an English interface. Not being a native English speaker, I'm trying to change the interface language to traditional Chinese. I've looked through the Control Panel in search of something that might let me change the interface language. Naturally, I looked at the Region and Language section and managed to change the formats the computer uses and install a working keyboard, but I haven't found a way to change the interface language. Upon doing some research, I found out that there are two kinds of interface packs, Multilingual User Interface (MUI) and Language Interface Packs (LIP). It seems that MUIs can only be installed through Windows Update, so I looked through the list of updates. To my dismay, the language packs are not present. The optional updates tab doesn't even show up. Many sites show a drop down menu the under Keyboards and Languages tab in the Region and Language options, yet it doesn't show up for me. We also don't have the Windows 7 DVD which might contain this useful file. As far as the LIPs go, I can't find one in Chinese at all, let alone traditional Chinese. Can the interface language be changed in Home Premium at all? If it can, how would I do so?

    I can modify my .xinitrc file to exec /opt/local/bin/wmaker, and get WindowMaker 0.90.2 as my window manager in X11.app. I'd like to use quartz-wm not as a window manager, but to provide the pasteboard integration with Aqua using the --only-proxy flag (see the man page). If I add the following line to .xinitrc: exec /usr/bin/quartz-wm --only-proxy & then WindowMaker never starts, complaining that there's already a window manager running. Is it possible to get the two to play nicely together, or is proxy feature part of the Xquartz server now? It seems that the Xquartz manpage has a number of pasteboard-to-clipboard synchronisation settings, but it's not clear whether quartz-wm needs to be running for those to work.

    I am using hostapd, wireless tools with madwifi for my wireless ap in my board. The WEP, WPA-PSK connections and communications between my board with linux and my desktop PC, Windows XP SP2 (with Olitec USB wireless) are fine. But when I configured the WPA type, the connection seems established but shows the status "TKIP - Key Absent" in the security dialog box. Anyone faced this problem?
