• I have enabled hidden administrator in Win 7 home, but programs still dont work.

  I have Windows 7 Home Premium, and would like to do some maintenance tasks such as running Disk Defragmenter. However, this and other programs and applications that I'm accustomed to using are now blocked. For these programs, there is a shield icon next to their icons and nothing happens when I click on them. I notice that the screen blinks slightly, but I do not get prompted for a password and the program still does not run. It seems these programs may only be accessible through an Administrator account. However, right-clicking and selecting "Run As Administrator" does not work. After some research, I found a way to enable the hidden built-in Administrator account. I booted the computer into safe mode. In the command prompt, I typed net user administrator /active:yes. I gave the account a password. I rebooted the system. There is now an Administrator account on the home screen. However, the locked programs behave no differently for me when I use this account. What could cause this problem? How can I fix it?

• Does this mean the router is faulty?

  I have a router to which I have my desktop (running Ubuntu) connected via LAN & I use it on my phone via wifi. Sometimes it happen that the LAN one will stop working for no reason but the wifi will work fine. And it will resolve away by itself. Since last night, the router was restarting again & again on its own, so I lodged a complaint about it and they said the router is faulty and will be replaced, but I know they don't know anything about how things work & is just going to shoot an arrow in the dark. These restarts has happened for the first time, LAN-wifi issue described earlier is a common one (but not frequent one). So is the router faulty or there is some issue from my ISP side which will continue to persist even after they change the router? My very best guess is that they will replace it with an older refurbished router which will tend to give me more troubles in the coming time, so its better if I change it only its faulty (this is a new one - 6months old, I am its first hand user). I am happy to provide any details.

• Multidimensional data table?

  [Apologies if this sort of question is off-topic for SuperUser. Please redirect to the right place if so.] There is a 3-dimensional array of values. (That is, instead of a table/2-dimensional array with values in a grid, the values can be thought of in a cube instead.) Is there a way to display this "cube" interactively, ideally on a webpage? Specifically, given the data, it would work something like this: the user selects two of the 3 variables. He then sees a "stack" of tables, one for each value of the third variable (cross-sections, in other words). By selecting the appropriate table from the stack, he can see the (i,j,k) value he wants. The "technology" for displaying such a thing (stacked tables, rotation, etc.) already exists, so this seems the sort of thing that someone ought to have written already. To be clear: I don't need sophisticated graphics necessarily, just the ability to select from cross-sections of variables. But I have no experience with (say, for displaying on a webpage) what web gadgets exist, so I'm clueless how to even search for one. (Google searches like "multidimensional data visualization" didn't throw up anything useful. Google Spreadsheets can do a few kinds of charts which can be embedded on a webpage, but I cannot tell if this is one of them.) [I can imagine how it ought to work for higher dimensions. For four-dimensions, instead of selecting just a stack, you'd first select an (i,j) from an "outer table", which would show all (k,l) values for that (i,j). For higher dimensions, inductively: you select (i,j), and then repeat what you'd do with 2 fewer dimensions.] So has this been written? Is this easy to write? Where ought one to look for such a thing?

• How to set up simple VPN for secure Internet connections over unencrypted Wi-Fi on Windows?

  I'm looking for a solution similar to the one in this question, except that I don't have a linux computer. I have windows computers that could be set up to accept VPN connections. Preferably I want to set this up on either Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP. I'd like to connect different devices (e.g. iPhone, iPad, laptops, etc.) that are on open unsecure wireless networks (e.g. the one's you see at places like Starbucks) to this VPN to ensure that all my data is secure. I found an article that shows that you can enable VPN connections on Windows XP. After following those steps, though, I'm not sure what to do. Which ports do I open on my firewall? Which VPN settings do I use on my devices such as the iPhone? Do I use L2TP, PPTP, or IPSec? What's the difference between these? Are there any other steps missing in that tutorial? I'm hoping that since Windows has this built in feature, that it will be much simpler to set up rather than having to deal with setting up something such as OpenVPN. If I follow those settings and enable port forwarding on port 1723, and then use the following settings on the iPhone: PPTP (IP Address) RSA SecurID: Off Encryption Level: Auto Send All Traffic: On Proxy: Off It shows "Connecting..." then "Disconnecting..." and the following error message: VPN Configuration A connection could not be established to the PPP server. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator. I'm using a user account that I enabled privileges to in the VPN settings on the Windows machine.

• Desktop PC does not power up on power button

  When I press the power button on my desktop, it does not power up completely. Before I press the power button, I see lights on the motherboard. Everything is normal. On power button press, the fans on the cpu, graphics card and motherboard start to spin a little for a second or two and then they stop. No beeps during this process. It has been doing this for a while now but it used to start up after some trials. Once it starts up, I have NO issues at all like random shutdowns so it is not an issue with OS. Update: I left the desktop off for a few days and it started. I'm just guessing here but it seems as if the PSU (Antec TP2-550ATX) is dying out and does not have enough power now - just a guess. It's an old desktop assembled in 2005 but I have maintained it well. Update: I always keep the desktop running and I never shut it down. During updates or manual restarts, it powers up without issues. I wonder if this sheds lights on the issue. Any idea how I can narrow down the issue? ex: if I can find if the PSU is dying etc. I'd really like to fix the issue. Please help. Thanks. Below is the complete configuration. • How to manage multiple email addresses on multiple domains in Exchange

  Using Hosted Exchange Server, mostly because I use an iPhone, webmail & Outlook on 2 laptops. I want to keep everything consistent and unfragmented. Also, I want push notifications. I have 2 domains, a professional one & a personal one. Each domain has about 5 (give or take) email addresses I use for various purposes. Each domain also has a few parked domains (.net, .org, .info) aliased to the .com domain. I would like to keep emails from the 2 domains separated. Do I need an extra mail box, meaning extra expense or can I create another Exchange user on the same mailbox and create an extra account in Outlook? In either case I will have to wait for iOS4 on the iPhone to manage 2 Exchange accounts. Or am I better off just using a set of rules and folders? The aliased domains are another joy to behold entirely. It looks like I will have to add each email address variant individually. Alternatively, I reckon I may just leave the aliased domains at the pop3 host and let Outlook gather those as edge-cases. Surely I can't be the only one making my life this difficult. Anyone out there done this? From the left field - is this (much) easier in gMail? I'm not committed to Exchange (yet). Previously I used Outlook as a pop3 client with a set of filters to direct incoming traffic to folders. This worked with the aliased domains because my host directed all the aliased TLDs to the same mailbox.

• What is the quickest and safest way to test new software and revert all changes, if needed?

  I'm looking for Windows software that will allow me to quickly create a "checkpoint", do whatever I might need to do to my computer - install programs/drivers/updates, create/delete personal files, reboot the system multiple times, open questionable attachments - and then revert the entire system back to when the checkpoint was created. Essentially I want Windows Restore Points that save my personal files and partitions, too. It sounds like disk imaging might be the ticket, but creating them is much too slow and the restore process too involved... I'm hoping to sacrifice full disaster recovery for speed. Creating a checkpoint should be as close to one-click as possible, and rolling back should be a matter of selecting a restore point and rebooting. Ding! I'm familiar with Sandboxie, True Image Home "Try and Decide", Returnil, and a number of other "virtual system" apps that actively "catch" changes and allow you to commit or reject them. I'm not interested in these for a number of reasons - I prefer the "cut and dry" restore point approach. Finally, I'll note that I've just recently become aware of Comodo Time Machine. It sounds absolutely perfect, however, a quick skim through the user forums show more than a few horror stories of corrupted, unbootable systems. Any positive personal experience with the software to suppress my superstitions, or suggestions for more established alternatives would be greatly appreciated - Comodo Time Machine seems relatively new. • Reliable backup software for windows network/samba shares.

  Hi All, I have a Win2003 server that works as a pdc for a number of XP boxes, and a couple related FreeBSD boxes. I need to back up roaming profiles, non-roaming profiles via network shares, local hard drive data, and files on the FreeBSD boxes via samba shares. I have tried Genie Backup Manager and Backup4All pro, and both have excellent features, but both also begin to fail disastrously with more than a few days use. Mostly, the errors seem to have been from the backup catalog getting out of synch with itself. Whatever it is, there is no excuse for a backup software that says it backed up files when it really didn't, or the log saying it backed up exactly the same file 10,000 times in a single run, or flat-out crashing, or any of the other myriad problems I've run into with these. Really sad for products that fill such an important need. Anyway, does anyone know of a backup software that works reliably and can do the following? Scheduled backups for multiple jobs, without a user logged in. Backup from local hard drives or network shares. Incremental backups. Thanks! • How to determine the root cause of a system lockup on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS?

  I'm currently working a project that involves setting up a PC/104 stack and running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. We need to use the PC/104 stack because its an embedded application - and we're required to use a DeviceNet peripheral card to communicate to other devices. (DeviceNet is just a protocol on top of CAN.) Anyway, the following hardware is on the stack: Kontron MOPSPM104 with a 1GHz Intel Celeron processor ConnectTech FlashDrive/104 4GB Industrial Temp (-40 to +85 C) Woodhead (Molex) PC104DVNIO DeviceNet card A run of the mill 104 power supply The Kontron Board offers two serial ports, one VGA out, and two USB ports. The DeviceNet card is an ISA card. Because of this (per the User's Guide for the Kontron Board), I have manually set the IRQs in the BIOS to be appropriately configured, and turned off ACPI in both the BIOS and passed the appropriate flag in GRUB. I've installed Ubuntu 8.04 desktop, 32 bit. The problem that I'm having is that, from time to time, the entire 104 stack locks up. This only seems to happen in two cases, both of which we're running GNOME. We have a custom application that uses the DeviceNet card, and the system will lock up, or (more frequently) when we're running Firefox and either surfing for some information or trying to test it - typically by streaming video from a IP-camera. The reason I ask this questions is I cannot determine the root cause of this lockup. The IRQs appear to correctly configured in the BIOS and as the Kernel sees them, and nothing is logged to dmesg. If you all could help me determine the root cause of this lockup, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

• Windows 7 BSOD when I walk away from the computer

  I have a really weird experience with this new AM3 box I set up. Everything seems fine at first. But now I get frequent (daily) BSOD's, mostly when I walk away from the computer for more than 5 minutes (when the computer is idle). The BSOD's as shown by BlueScreenView almost always have to do with ntoskrnl.exe, and they'll do with really normal sounding operations, like SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, BAD_POOL_HEADER - You name it. These are basically them, and they repeat after that, just random order. Its not like one is more consistently the problem than the other. I have Windows update ON and I let it do its updates everytime it wants to. I turned windows indexing service off, but it seems Windows 7 does a lot of background processing when I'm away - I'll come into the room and the fan will be going nuts (I'm pretty sure this isn't because the computer flies into a panic whenever I leave). I tried finding updates for my ASUS, and really there isn't much to install (except some new driver firmware). I'm going to install that to see if it helps, but what else could it be? Is it possible its a hardware issue with the board? Or is every Windows 7 user experiencing daily BSOD these days that I don't know about?

• Why does clicking on Windows 7 Printer Properties Result In Driver Not Installed?

  The question I need to ask is has anyone heard of getting a "driver not installed" error when clicking on a printer's properties on Windows 7, and is there a workaround? Here are the details of the problem. One of our users has a Windows 7 desktop, and an HP LaserJet 4050 T connected to via a parallel-to-usb converter. The PLC5 universal driver was installed for series 4050 printers. I needed to install the PLC 6 driver, which completed successfully. The user is an administrator of the system, and I was prompted to and accepted running as Administrator to install the driver. After the install, I went to see the 4050's properties and was prompted that the PLC6 driver was not installed. I believe the PLC6 driver was installed, because the PLC5 driver resulted in receiving an official HP error page indicating the printer was "not set up for collating" as the second page of printing two copies of a one page email. This problem did not occur with the PLC 6 driver. Oddly enough, setting back to PLC5 produced the same error about the PLC5 driver not being installed. I ignored/dismissed the error box (did not re-install the driver), and reproduced the error, with the second page being the HP not set up for collating error page. Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to clear it would be appreciated. The closest fix I could find was on a Microsoft tech page, and they had me clear winsock out of a Administrator run command line, followed by a reboot. That did not fix the problem. • MS Excel 2010 - Using DSN + 32 bit drivers

  I need some advice as im running into a problem and so far i have been unable to find a solution. We have a set of reports developed in MS Excel that use DSN file to connect to data sources to retrieve data, these work fine on 32 / 64bit systems, however we are moving to a terminal server environment using windows 2008 R2 64Bit. The reports fail to run using the DSN's within this environment if we only have the 32bit drivers installed and configured in the ODBC settings, the minute we install the 64Bit drivers the software works. Is there a way / Method of getting Excel or the DSN file to NOT use the 64Bit driver, but force it to use the 32bit driver. ANSWERED - But due to low user score i cannot "answer" my own question... Sadly there is no way to-do what i want to-do, without a lot of very nasty and not 100% perfect reg hacks. • windows 7 turns off itself everyday at about 9am

  I was given this comp at work and after a week or so this strange thing started to happen in the middle of doing something :-( It turns off itself at about 9.10am every morning Just once a day and it works fine after it had it little nap. it happens both if the comp was on all night or I turned it off before leaving the office. I tried to swapped the memory as I was told that there was an issue with memory. But moving or removing any memory did not make any difference. I am not aware that I would install any program that could cause that. I installed AVG and set it up to do every day scan about 8am + if restart is needed it requires user confirmation. 'The Software Protection service has stopped' few minutes before it turned off itself but it happened also at other times without the computer turned off. I turned off Windows automatic updates as the first thing when I got the comp configuration Windows 7 Ultimate Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 at 2.8GH, 8GB RAM ST31000528AS Barracuda 7200.12 SATA 3Gb/s 1TB Update Below message are logged when I turn the comp on again. • Word 2010 creates multiple processes... sometimes

  I've run into a strange behavior when I migrated our users from Office 2007 / Vista to Office 2010 / Windows 7 (all 32-bit). They use a web based document management system called NetDocuments which stores all their .doc/.docx files. Generally, when they click on a doc from the browser window it fires up Word and opens the doc. Word has an add-in in it from NetDocs as well so it can upload the changed document directly back to the NetDocs server. I get a phone call when Word crashes, and every single time it has crashed I have witnessed multiple winword.exe processes running in task manager. I used process explorer to see what created the process, and it is all Internet Explorer. So far I have rolled them back to IE8 and the problem happens less frequently, but it still happens. When I try to duplicate the problem, I can make it happen sometimes if I open multiple documents very quickly. Using lightning fast alt-tab reflexes, I DO see that a 2nd WinWord process is created when a user clicks on a document, then it closes once the document is open. I think what is happening is that the secondary WinWord process that does some sort of NetDocs voodoo is getting stuck open. This behavior is new to Word 2010 / Windows 7 and google searching isn't coming up with much. I have seen a few posts that this is a known issue in certain circumstances and there is no "fix", but I thought it would good to ask others on this. Thanks!

  After being a Windows user for the last 10 years, I got a MacBook Pro, which I'm working on configuring to my liking. I find small-size anti-aliased text to be blurry and hard to read, so I typically disable it. I've found the settings in the General Control Panel, and used TinkerTool to increase the anti-alias threshold size to 18pt. Mac OS X and other applications appear to respect these settings. A problem appears when I use Firefox. By default, it's configured to ignore the Mac OS anti-alias settings. This is changed by going to about:config, and setting gfx.use_text_smoothing_setting = true (default is false). However, even with this setting, it appears Firefox is still rendering the fonts under the assumption that they will be anti-aliased, which results in very odd and uneven spacing, as you can see in this example (pay attention to the placement of the "s" in "Disable"): With anti-aliasing: Without anti-aliasing: How can I configure Firefox to both not use anti-aliasing and to use correct font spacing? • Flash drive suddenly died. Why? Can I recover it?

  Hi, I have a flash drive that I used not too much but, after few month of inactivity, it died. I know that flash drives have a limited write cycles but I am sure that this is not the problem. I tried to create a new partition table and format the drive nothing worked. • Suddenly can't send E-Mails with Apple Mail to Gmail SMTP

  Hi all, I have a weird problem that started just today. I am using Apple Mail on a Leopard machine, connecting to Gmail. Fetching e-mail works just fine. My SMTP settings are also correct. Still, I can't send mail, it will display a pop up saying that "transferring the content to the mail server" failed (translation from German, could be different in English OS X versions). I have verified the following: My SMTP settings are definitely correct. I have not changed them and the issue appeared today. Also, I went through the Apple online configuration for Gmail accounts and did not have to adjust any setting. I can run network diagnosis and it will connect to both POP and SMTP servers without a problem (all green lights) The Telnet details will show me the HELO message from the Gmail servers, so there's no authentication failure. Console.app will not show any messages related to "mail" when I try to send the mail, so there's no specific error message The mail I'm trying to send does not have an attachment, it is plaintext only I can login to gmail.com and send mails without a problem The recipient address exists and contains no syntax errors I can also not send mails to myself When using another IP and ISP (through VPN), it still doesn't work As for my settings: I connect to smtp.gmail.com and for advanced settings I choose password-based authentication with user: [email protected] and my password. I let Apple Mail try the default ports (for SSL and TLS, respectively). Again: I have not changed a thing between yesterday and today. What is causing that strange behavior? Any help would be much appreciated.

• Encrypted WiFi with no password?

  Is there any standard that allows a WiFi connection to be encrypted, but not require a password? i know that (old, weak) WEP, and newer WPA/WPA2 require a password (i.e. shared secret). Meanwhile my own wireless connections are "open", and therefore unencrypted. There is no technical reason why i can't have an encrypted link that doesn't require the user to enter any password. Such technology exists today (see public key encryption and HTTPS). But does such a standard exist for WiFi? Note: i only want to protect communications, not limit internet access. i get the sense that no such standard exists (since i'm pretty capable with Google), but i'd like it confirmed. Claraification: i want to protect communcations, not limit internet access. That means users are not required to have a password (or its moral equivalent). This means users are not required: to know a password to know a passphrase to enter a CAPTCHA to draw a secret to have a key fob to know a PIN to use a pre-shared key have a pre-shared file to possess a certificate In other words: it has the same accessibility as before, but is now encrypted.

• How to avoid sshfs freezing?

  So the issue is this: I've installed sshfs on Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm trying to connect to a couple of remote servers. So initially the mount seams successful. Sometimes Gnome even picks it up and displays the "new device found" box at the bottom of the screen. but from here on there is not much that works. Or at least not any more. The first couple of times i connected it seamed to work fine, and I was able to transfer some files, then i disconnected using fusermount -u <folder> and after reconnecting a little later the trouble started. Now after executing sshfs -o ServerAliveInterval=15 -o reconnect -C -o workaround=all -o idmap=user root@<host>:/ <folder>, when I change directory into the mount-point, the shell just freezes. Strangely ls -al <folder> works when listing just the root of the remote system, but nothing more. Also every file-explorer I've tried freezes just like cd <folder>. To me it seamed like there was some kind of zombie thread or something hanging around my system, due to the fact that it did work the first time, so I have tried rebooting but no luck. sshfs -V gives this: SSHFS version 2.3 FUSE library version: 2.8.6 fusermount version: 2.8.6 using FUSE kernel interface version 7.12 So yea, any ideas?

• ksh Auto-Completion PuTTY Configuration

  I'm having a bit of a problem configuring my PuTTY client to work with the auto-completion feature in the ksh shell. I do a listing on the root with the directories /home and /homeroot and it returns the directories in a list just fine. • Browsing \\computer\share fails, but net use \\computer\share works?

  I've had mixed results with using Windows Explorer to browse remote file shares. The setup: I'm at work on Windows XP SP3 Files are at home on Windows XP SP3 Two separate VPNs are available to access my PC at home corporate OpenVPN (10.1.2.3) a Hamachi/LogMeIn connection (5.1.2.3) With respect to my problem, it doesn't matter which IP I use. They both perform exactly the same way: I expect that if I open Windows Explorer and type in \\10.1.2.3\Shared I should be interrupted with a challenge for credentials, and then be able to interact with the files in the share. However, I just get that annoying dialog, "Windows cannot find '\10.1.2.3\Shared' Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item ..." However, I can take that exact same computername/sharename and with net use I can: net use * \\10.1.2.3\Shared * /user:homecomputername\username with this result: Type the password for \\5.69.83.158\C$: Drive Z: is now connected to \\5.69.83.158\C$. The command completed successfully. I can then access the files in Z: in Windows Explorer which was my original intent. Even after Z: is already mapped and the credentials are cached I still cannot bring up \\10.1.2.3\Shared in Windows Explorer. Why does the latter work, but not the former? Edit: Other services work fine, such as RDP. (I have a problem in which I can't SSH home, but I'll consider that separately.)

• Windows Server - share files without access for administrator

  We have a MS Windows Server 2008 R8 based server that is administrated by our IT department. We would like to achieve two things simultaneously: A folder on the server, containing several thousand files (new files added frequently) that is accessible to some ActiveDirectory users (e.g. board of directors) but is not accessible by IT department employees IT department employees still maintain rights to administrate the server, including installing new software and services We already checked some solutions: Using NTFS access rights. Unfortunately IT (members of "Administrators" group) can set themselves as new owners of the files and change the permissions so that they gain access to the files. Enabling EFS. Unfortunately even if you do not allow IT to access files, they still can disable EFS completely because they have administrative rights. Moreover as far as I know you have to manually add permissions for all users but the owner for each new file - very inconvenient. Creating a new role for the IT department that has all the privileges apart from taking ownership of files. Unfortunately if you're not a member of the Administrators group, you cannot install new software, no matter what privileges you add to the role. TrueCrypt - nice free encryption software, but with poor sharing capabilities. You can either mount an encryption container on the server (and then IT has access to its contents) or you mount them locally but only one user can mount it for writing. AxCrypt - free encryption software that enables file-by-file encryption on the server. There are some disadvantages though - you have to manually encrypt each new file added. The files have their extensions changes. You can only set one password for all files (so all users have to know this one password). Any other ideas? Our budget is limited so enterprise-class software from Symantec or PGP would probably be not an option.

• Chrome pop-up blocker fail?

  I have this problem since just a few days. I've been a heavy Chrome user for several years, but it never happened before: Sometimes absolutely uncalled for pop-ups appear, when I click something absolutely legit. It seems to happen at a very precise rate of two pop-ups every hour or so. The pop-ups are not very varied, it seems to be a fixed set of some 4-5 ads. At first I thought I caught some malware, but after a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, I found absolutely nothing. In addition the problem exists only with Chrome. When I use Firefox, this never ever happens. What is even more puzzling is that it happens on both of my rigs and started on the same day. I have a removable storage that I dock to both of them and access one machine from the other via RDP, but still... It seems this is a problem that others face too. See this Google forum and here. Could it be that the latest Chrome build is just acting up? (Just in case it matters: I run Chrome version 24.0.1312.57 m on Win 7.)

• Asus PCE-N53 11n N600 PCI-E Adapter on 3.x kernel

  Problem ASUS PCE-N53 wireless NIC doesn't work for latest versions of the linux kernel. How do I get it working on my system? (Note: I'm posting the answer I've found for others to use.) Installing Driver for Linux 3.x Kernel ASUS provides Linux drivers from their website, but it mentions that the driver supports "Linux Kernel 2.6.x", so it won't work without a some modifications to the driver code. Fortunately, an archlinux forum mentions similar problems and one user was able to create a patch for kernel 3.8.x that seems to work with kernel 3.11.x. Here's how I got it working: Prerequisites Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install build-essential Arch: sudo pacman -S base-devel Steps: 1. Download the driver from the ASUS website The download can be found under "Support Drivers & Tools". 2. Unzip the contents of the downloaded file cd into the new directory 3. Patch The arch forum mentions a 3.8 patch file that needs to be downloaded. Download rt5592sta_fix_64bit_3.8.patch to the current directory. tar -xvf {driver_source.tar.gz} cd into the directory created in previous step patch -p1 < ../rt5592sta_fix_64bit_3.8.patch 4. Compile NOTE: You will need to use sudo for it to compile properly. sudo make sudo make install sudo modprobe rt5592sta 5. Enjoy If all is well, you should now have a working card.
