  Hi, I have almost completed my Android application so am considering ways of distributing the application. I have seen some applications on Market have free limited/locked version and separate Unlock Key/License Key which unlocks extra functionality. How is this done? Has anyone here done this? If so, how well does it work? I am thinking maybe this is better then having two versions of the same application (i.e Lite and Pro). Thanks.

• Number of times a file (e.g., PDF) was accessed on a server

  I have a small website with several PDFs free for download. I use StatCounter to observe the number of page loads. It also shows me the number of my PDF downloads, but it considers only those downloads where a user clicks on the link from my website. But what's with the "external" access to the PDFs (e.g., directly from Google search)? How I can count those? Is there any possibility to use a tool such as StatCounter? Thanks.

• Which "platform" should we use for a notifier-component?

  Hi all We need to develop a notifier component. What it will do, is to scan a database at given intervals (say, every 15th minute), to see if any notifications needs to be sent out. We're running on Windows, and so we've been looking into either a Windows Service or the Windows Task Scheduler. Our biggest concern is the robustness of our implementation. If it, for some reason, crashes, can it be auto-restarted the next interval? Can we use custom logging logic, to take care of crashes? I'd like an educated guess on what to use here :) Feel free to say if you need additional info, to make such a guess.. Props will be given if someone could make a short listing of the pros n cons of a windows service vs. the windows task scheduler. Also, it should be noted, that we aren't set on either of these, so if you have any alternatives, please, do post away. Thanks in advance :)

• Does anyone know of a good script to force file downloads and yet protect download links on a PHP se

  I tried using a free script that I found on the Internet but it is giving me problems with Windows users (even though they are using IE 8, so it's not an option for me to ask them to upgrade their browsers.) Here's the requirements: I have a bunch of Microsoft Word and pdf files that need to be protected so that only authorized users can download them. I have already created the login system and the current script I have works fine for non-IE browsers. However, I keep getting recurring problems with Windows users who keep complaining that their files download corrupt and yet everyone else either using Mac or Linux or any other browser gets on just fine. The script must allow me to store files in a directory but force download of the file upon the function call. Must work well with most major browsers, especially I.E. If you have any practice suggestions or know of any great scripts (even if they are paid, I'm sick of this problem and would probably pay for a paid script) it would be greatly appreciated in advance.

• Why can't I do this from ASP.NET?

  The code below spawns the process and sits forever, never finishing. It doesn't matter what process I run. Also, if I use Shell with Wait it does the same thing. If I set wait to false in either approach it works just fine. It's ASP.NET 2.0 VB.NET DotNetNuke 4.0 on Windows Server 2003. I can't even phathom why this would hang up. • Implementation communication protocols in C/C++

  I am in the process of starting to implement some proprietary communication protocol stack in software but not sure where to start. It is the kind of work I have not done before and I am looking for help in terms of resources for best/recommended approaches. I will be using c/c++ and I am free to use use libraries (BSD/BOOST/Apache) but no GPL. I have used C++ extensively so using the features of C++ is not a problem. The protocol stack has three layers and it is already fully specified and formally verified. So all I need to do is implemented and test it fully in the specified languages. Should also mention that protocol is very simple but can run on different devices over a reliable physical transport layer Any help with references/recommendations will be appreciated. I am willing to use a different language if only to help me understand how to implement them but I will have to eventually resort to the language of choice.

  I am using tinymce. It works great. But i want the feature in tinymce where user can upload the images from local box/or from public websites. I am using tomcat ,jsps and core java.I found couple of free third party libraries like ibrowser ,imanager,jbimages etc but all of them using PHP which looks like does not fit in my existing project (i dont know PHP but i tried to integrate one of these in my existing project they don't work and gives some weird error.) Really i am not sure how to have this feature in tinymce(if some other editor support it with jsps i can try that)?

  I'm working on different projects with some small teams (2-3 people for each). Those projects are about some scientific stuff, most (probably all) the code will be released under GPL after the publication of some results and we don't want to spend money for this. My first question is: should i keep my local SVN server or you know some good service for this? Both of them have some disadvantages and services like xp-dev.com looks pretty interesting but should i trust them? [i'll get only the free plan] Online services give you some tools for project management, what do you think about them?

• Loading jQuery with Tapestry 5

  Okay, so I'm not a Java guy, but I work with loads of them. We generally load Prototype with Tapestry 5, as Tapestry was built on this javascript library. As a UI/front end developer/engineer, I know the awesomeness of jQuery and the lack of prototype therein. (Feel free to debate that elsewhere -- this ticket doesn't concern that question, ha.) I've been curious for some time if it's possible to port jQuery into Tapestry instead of Prototype -- as in completely removing Prototype and Scriptaculous -- I realize it kind of defeats the purpose of the already bundled Prototype, but I wanted other opinions on the matter. • (C#) How do you de-elevate permissions for a child process

  I know how to launch a process with Admin privileges from a process using: proc.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = true; proc.StartInfo.Verb = "runas"; where proc is a System.Diagnostics.Process. But how does one do the opposite? If the process you're in is already elevated, how do you launch the new process without admin privileges? More accurately, we need to launch the new process with the same permission level as Windows Explorer, so no change if UAC is diabled, but if UAC is enabled, but our process is running elevated, we need to perform a certain operation un-elevated because we're creating a virtual drive and if it's created with elevated permissions and Windows explorer is running unelevated it won't show up. Feel free to change the title to something better, I couldn't come up with a good description

The constraints are: Laptop is out of battery and there are no free sockets. You're bored of the book you're reading or you have none with you. Reasonable resources such as a pen and pad of paper are available. Rules can be bent within reason. As daft examples, things I have thought about are: How I might optimise the boarding of a plane. • Access Assests from another application?

  I get a lot of requests in my application to allow for custom icons packs from BetterCut / Open Home. The way it seems to work is you install BetterCut or Open Home, then you can install tons of these free icon packs from the market. Once installed both those apps (and other apps) will poll for those icon packs and use the icons. I want to know how to poll the install applications for the asset folders that are available. I have opened up a few of the icon packs and verified that there is an assets folder in there and they are full of all the icon png files. I've searched on here, other code sites, google, etc but havn't found any leads.

• Best way to parse XMPP-like XML streams?

  I am working on a server application which receives data over a TCP socket in an XMPP-like XML format, i.e. every child of the <root> element essentially represents one separate request (stanza). The connection is closed as soon as </root> is received. I do know that I must use a stream parser like SAX, somehow. Though, for convenience, I'd prefer to have a tree-like interface to access each stanza's child elements. (The data sent with every request is not large so I think it makes sense to read each stanza as a whole.) What's the best way to realize that in Python (preferably v3)? This is the code I'd like to build it in. • Is it possible to compute the minimum of three numbers by using two comparisons at the same time?

  I've been trying to think up of some way that I could do two comparisons at the same time to find the greatest/least of three numbers. Arithmetic operations on them are considered "free" in this case. That is to say, the classical way of finding the greater of two, and then comparing it to the third number isn't valid in this case because one comparison depends on the result of the other. Is it possible to use two comparisons where this isn't the case? I was thinking maybe comparing the differences of the numbers somehow or their products or something, but came up with nothing. Just to reemphasize, two comparisons are still done, just that neither comparison relies on the result of the other comparison. EDIT: what about: boolA = A^2 + B^2 < C^2 boolB = A > B if boolA then max=C else if boolB then max=A else max=B

• Produce a script to hit Google once a day and log our position in the results?

  The need has arisen within our organisation to monitor (on a daily basis) where our site appears (both organic and PPC) on the page 1 of Google. Also where a key competitor appears. For certain key words. In the immediate short term a colleague is doing this by hitting Google manually and jotting down the results. Yep. It occurs to us we can write a script (e.g. using C#) to do this. I know Analytics will tell us an awful lot but it doesn't note the competitor's position, plus I don't think it has other data we want. Question is, is there an existing basic tool which does this (for free, I guess)? And if we write it ourselves, where to start and are there obvious pitfalls to avoid (for example can Google detect and block automated requests?)

• How do you force a Linux process (Java webstart App) to stop locking a Filesystem (CD-ROM) WITHOUT k

  In Linux (CentOS 5.4), how do you force a process to stop locking a file system without killing the process? I am trying to get my Java Webstart Application, running locally, to eject a CD. I do not have this problem if I am just browsing through the files using a JFileChooser, but once I read the contents of a file, I can no longer eject the CD...even after removing ALL references to any files. Hitting the eject button will give the error (Title - "Cannot Eject Volume"): "An application is preventing the volume 'volume name' from being ejected" Thus, my goal is to tell the process to stop targeting the CD-ROM in order to free it up. Thank you for any help or direction!! Attempted Fix: -running the commands: sudo umount -l /media/Volume_Name //-l Lazy Unmount forces the unmount sudo eject Problem: When a new CD is inserted, it is no longer mounted automatically probably because the process is still "targeting" it.

• Which Subversion do I install for Windows?

I would have just downloaded the first entry but I am afraid it would break my server or something if I don't have apache. We use IIS only and I wouldn't want to break it somehow. I don't even need a web or webdav front end.   In a lot of C++ API'S (COM-based ones spring to mind) that make something for you, the pointer to the object that is constructed is usually required as a ** pointer (and the function will construct and init it for you) You usually see signatures like: HRESULT createAnObject( int howbig, Object **objectYouWantMeToInitialize ) ; -- but you seldom see the new object being passed as a return value. Besides people wanting to see error codes, what is the reason for this? Is it better to use the ** pattern rather than a returned pointer for simpler operations such as: wchar_t* getUnicode( const char* src ) ; Or would this better be written as: void getUnicode( const char* src, wchar_t** dst ) ; The most important thing I can think of is to remember to free it, and the ** way, for some reason, tends to remind me that I have to deallocate it as well.

  I've used TFS for about 18 months now and I'm really not excited about it. It seems like the worst of the current versions of SCMs on the market. I think this thread will help people decide if TFS is for them vs. other source control systems. While TFS does a lot more than that, I think that source control is so critical to software development that any system (or combination thereof) that you pick needs to consider source control first. So, feel free to sound off. Maybe it'll make us feel better and be informative at the same time.

• Delphi: Application error logging in the field

  Using Delphi 7, I wonder if there is a free component which will collect diagnostic information as my application runs at a remote site and will help me to debug error reports. Maybe it records each menu item selected, control clicked, text input, etc? Maybe it just dumps the stack on a crash. Maybe it does something else ... I don't mind adding code (e.g at the start and end of each procedure), as that might generate more useful info than a fully automatic system. I am not sure if the solution ought to "phone home" or if it is enough to produce a text file which can be emailed to me. Any suggestions?

  I had to return a random element from an array so I came up with this placeholder: return codes[(int) (System.currentTimeMillis() % codes.length - 1)]; Now than I think of it, I'm tempted to use it in real code. The Random() seeder uses system time as seed in most languages anyway, so why not use that time directly? As a bonus, I'm free from the worry of non-random lower bits of many RNGs. It this hack coming back to bite me? (The language is Java if that's relevant.)

• How to remove the file which has opened handles?

  PROBLEM HISTORY: Now I use Windows Media Player SDK 9 to play AVI files in my desktop application. It works well on Windows XP but when I try to run it on Windows 7 I caught an error - I can not remove AVI file immediately after playback. The problem is that there are opened file handles exist. On Windows XP I have 2 opened file handles during the playing file and they are closed after closing of playback window but on Windows 7 I have already 4 opened handles during the playing file and 2 of them remain after the closing of playback window. They are become free only after closing the application. QUESTION: How can I solve this problem? How to remove the file which has opened handles? May be exists something like "force deletion"? Thanks.
