• Windows 7 search doesn’t find text strings

  I’m not able to find any text strings starting not from the beginning of word in filename or in file content using Windows 7 search. My Windows 7 search configuration: Let’s say I’m searching for a documents containing word “content”. I’m able to find those documents when searching for “content”, “conte”, “con” (as long as the string includes the beginning of the word). "content" "con" But if I search for “ontent”, “tent” or any other combination that doesn’t include the beginning of the word, Windows search won't find it. I've tried other indexing/searching software such as Copernic Desktop search, Google desktop search. Those programs also weren’t able to find part of the word starting from the middle of the word. For instance, it finds “conte”, but doesn’t find “onte”. Finds “conte” Doesn’t find “onte” I got the same problem using Copernic desktop search. On the other hand, when I use non-indexing content search software such as Agent Ransack or FileSeek, I get the same results when searching for “conte” or “onte”: “conte” “onte” Why do all pre-indexing content search applications (Windows search, Google desktop, Copernic desktop search) fail to search for a string inside the words? Why do non-indexing applications find text strings wherever they are: in the beginning, middle or end of the word? I’ve tried wildcards and other constructions with no luck. *onte onte “onte” content:onte content:onte content:~onte All these searched doesn’t find the word “content”. How can I make Windows search find strings from any part of words? Could you try these searches and see if they work for you? Or is this normal behavior? Thank you. • How is SU indexed so fast on Google?

  I just did a quick Google for a question that was 20 minutes old, to look for an answer, and it was already on Google Search - how is this possible? I glanced over this article which seems to suggest that SU has added RSS feeds (which SU has, but when I opened the feed the article says last posted 6 minutes ago, but when Googled it is 11 hours old) - which leads me to think (Based on that article, I don't know much about search indexing but I am reading at the moment) that most of this indexing is done thanks to the sitemap - is there anything else I am unaware of that helps SU questions get on Google so fast?

• Indexing text file content with command line query

  I take daily notes in a plaintext file labeled with date in the YYYYMMDD format. These files are no more than 100 lines long, and are written in a blog style format. I'd like to be able search these files as if they were blog posts indexed by google, with some phrase query returning the most relevant/recent date filenames, with a snippet containing the relevant part. Ideally it would be something like this: #searchindex "laptop no sound" returns: 20100909.txt: ... laptop sound isn't working... 20100101.txt ... sound is too loud... debating what laptop to buy... and so on and so forth. I'm working on a linux platform (Debian with GNOME). I've looked at beagle and tracker, but they just seem complete overkill for what I want.

I don't know if it's on C: drive or D: drive. • Search /usr/local/texlive directory with Spotlight

  Having TeXLive installed on my Mac, I frequently need to consult documentation for some of the packages. It seems silly to Google this when I have the PDFs all on my HDD in /usr/local/texlive/2011/texmf-dist/doc , so I want to be able to use Spotlight to search for them. However, I can't get Spotlight to cooperate. I tried mdimport /usr/local/texlive/2011/texmf-dist/doc which then does some work, but afterwards doesn't display any results in Spotlight. I've also added the folder in Alfred's search scope to no avail. Any ideas?

  It would be nice if you can share your experience on the pros and cons of each of them. Personally I only know Google Desktop and Beagle, and I haven't really used them. I mainly store my files on Windows (and use its integrated indexed search) but I'm trying to see if I can switch over to Linux. Also, can any one of the search indexer run without X? Does any of them provide an API for search queries?

• Windows 7 search does not return results from indexed folders

  I am experiencing this issue over and over again and I just cannot seem to find the answer. It doesn't make sense, but search simply does not return results from folders that certainly have these files inside. It's weird that this technology exists for more than 5 years now (it could be added to Windows XP as an addon), and they still haven't got it right. My folder contains 10 image files with .png extensions. Two scenarios: Scenario 1: I exclude the folder using Indexing options. Search works. Scenario 2: I turn on indexing for this folder. Search does not work. Of course, Agent Ransack returns results every time. When I check Advanced options for the Indexing options inside control panel, .png files are checked in the File Types tab, using the "File Properties filter". What's the deal with this? [Edit] To clarify, this doesn't happen with all folders, but does with more than one. For the "problematic" folders, even *.* doesn't return a single result. I found some advice to clear the archive and readonly attributes for all files (doesn't make sense, but hey), but it didn't work. Indexing status in Control panel is: Indexing complete. 100,000 items indexed. Folder is included in the list. File types list contains the .png extension (although it doesn't work with any filter, not even *.*).

• Query Performance Degrades with High Number of Logical Reads

  I'm using Confio Ignite8 to derive this information, and monitor waits. I have one query that runs frequently, and I notice that on some days there is an extremely high number of logical reads incurred, +300,000,000 for 91,000 executions. On a good day, the logical reads are much lower, 18,000,000 for 94,000 executions. The execution plan for the query utilizes clustered index seeks, and is below.   Hello, I would like to redirect index.php, as well as any other valid default file (e.g. index.html, index.asp, etc.) to the document root (which contains index.php) with something like this: RewriteRule ^index\.(php|htm|html|asp|cfm|shtml|shtm)/?$ / [NC,L] However, this is of course giving me an infinite redirect loop. What's the right way to do this? If possible, I'd like to have this work in both the development and production environment, so I don't want to specify an explicit url like http://www.mysite.com/ as the target. Thanks!

• How to Prevent Spotlight from Indexing Non-Apps in /Applications Directory?

  The only thing I need indexed in the /Applications folder are the .app files. Is there any way to setup a filter to have mds or Spotlight ignore everything in /Applications except .apps? Otherwise, would it be possible to setup a rule for Alfred to omit any non-.app records from /Applications? I still want documents indexed and returned, just not from that specific directory. OS X 10.6.8 if you're wondering.

So, www.example.com/index.php?section=Article&view=Default&id=105 would become www.example.com/article/105. The only real physical file is index.php, in which the parameters of the URL queried is processed and the corresponding result is outputted. My question is, do the crawling robots (e.g. Googlebot) recognize these links? Do they index the resulting HTML outputted by index.php with the specified parameters as if it was a actual HTML file? Also, would this become a problem when creating a Sitemap?

• What is causing this SQL 2005 Primary Key Deadlock between two real-time bulk upserts?

  Here's the scenario: I've got a table called MarketDataCurrent (MDC) that has live updating stock prices. I've got one process called 'LiveFeed' which reads prices streaming from the wire, queues up inserts, and uses a 'bulk upload to temp table then insert/update to MDC table.' (BulkUpsert) I've got another process which then reads this data, computes other data, and then saves the results back into the same table, using a similar BulkUpsert stored proc. Thirdly, there are a multitude of users running a C# Gui polling the MDC table and reading updates from it. Now, during the day when the data is changing rapidly, things run pretty smoothly, but then, after market hours, we've recently started seeing an increasing number of Deadlock exceptions coming out of the database, nowadays we see 10-20 a day. The imporant thing to note here is that these happen when the values are NOT changing. To me it looks like it's deadlocking on the PK of the table, so I tried removing that PK and switching to a Unique Constraint instead but that increased the number of deadlocks 10-fold. I'm totally lost as to what to do about this situation and am open to just about any suggestion. HELP!!

• A few problems with Delphi involving Mail Merge, SQL + Databases.

  My first problem is with mail merge. I have created a a Data File and a table, yet I am not able to fill my table with information from my Data File. The << just seems to be inserted after wherever the cursor is on the page, which is not where the table is. All that is entered into the actual table is a '59'. Therefore I think I either need to to change the code or be able to move the cursor. The third problem is that when I add a new column to my database manually (which I need to do) I get a 'violation' error in one of my units when I activate an ADOTable. This only happens on one unit and it happens when I add a column with any name anywhere in the table. I know that is vague but I can't seem to narrow down the problem any further than that. If you could help with me with any of those it would be great. Thanks.

• What is the best approach in SQL to store multi-level descriptions?

  I need a new perspective on how to design a reliable and efficient SQL database to store multi-level arrays of data. This problem applies to many situations but I came up with this example: There are hundreds of products. Each product has an undefined number of parts. Each part is built from several elements. All products are described in the same way. All parts would require the same fields to describe them (let's say: price, weight, part name), all elements of all parts also have uniform design (for example: element code, manufacturer). Plain and simple. One element may be related to only part, and each part is related to one product only. I came up with idea of three tables: Products: -------------------------------------------- prod_id prod_name prod_price prod_desc 1 hoover 120 unused next Parts: ---------------------------------------------------- part_id part_name part_price part_weight prod_id 3 engine 10 20 1 and finally Elements: --------------------------------------- el_id el_code el_manufacturer part_id 1 BFG12 GE 3 Now, select a desired product, select all from PARTS where prod_id is the same, and then select all from ELEMENTS where part_id matches - after multiple queries you've got all data. I'm just not sure if this is the right approach. I've got also another idea, without ELEMENTS table. That would decrease queries but I'm a bit afraid it might be lame and bad practice. Instead of ELEMENTS table there are two more fields in the PARTS table, so it looks like this: part_id, part_name, part_price, part_weight, prod_id, part_el_code, part_el_manufacturer they would be text type, and for each part, information about elements would be stored as strings, this way: part_el_code | code_of_element1; code_of_element2; code_of_element3 part_el_manufacturer | manuf_of_element1; manuf_of_element2; manuf_of_element3 Then all we need is to explode() data from those fields, and we get arrays, easy to display. Of course this is not perfect and has some limitations, but is this idea ok? Or should I just go with the first idea? Or maybe there is a better approach to this problem? It's really hard to describe it in few words, and that means it's hard to search for answer. Also, understanding the principles of designing databases is not that easy as it seems.

• Trace File Source Adapter

  The Trace File Source adapter is a useful addition to your SSIS toolbox.  It allows you to read 2005 and 2008 profiler traces stored as .trc files and read them into the Data Flow.  From there you can perform filtering and analysis using the power of SSIS. There is no need for a SQL Server connection this just uses the trace file. Example Usages Cache warming for SQL Server Analysis Services Reading the flight recorder Find out the longest running queries on a server Analyze statements for CPU, memory by user or some other criteria you choose Properties The Trace File Source adapter has two properties, both of which combine to control the source trace file that is read at runtime. SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 trace files are supported for both the Database Engine (SQL Server) and Analysis Services. The properties are managed by the Editor form or can be set directly from the Properties Grid in Visual Studio. Property Type Description AccessMode Enumeration This property determines how the Filename property is interpreted. The values available are: DirectInput Variable Filename String This property holds the path for trace file to load (*.trc). The value is either a full path, or the name of a variable which contains the full path to the trace file, depending on the AccessMode property. Trace Column Definition Hopefully the majority of you can skip this section entirely, but if you encounter some problems processing a trace file this may explain it and allow you to fix the problem. The component is built upon the trace management API provided by Microsoft. Unfortunately API methods that expose the schema of a trace file have known issues and are unreliable, put simply the data often differs from what was specified. To overcome these limitations the component uses  some simple XML files. These files enable the trace column data types and sizing attributes to be overridden. For example SQL Server Profiler or TMO generated structures define EventClass as an integer, but the real value is a string. TraceDataColumnsSQL.xml  - SQL Server Database Engine Trace Columns TraceDataColumnsAS.xml    - SQL Server Analysis Services Trace Columns The files can be found in the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\PipelineComponents folder, e.g. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\PipelineComponents\TraceDataColumnsSQL.xml" "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\PipelineComponents\TraceDataColumnsAS.xml" If at runtime the component encounters a type conversion or sizing error it is most likely due to a discrepancy between the column definition as reported by the API and the actual value encountered. Whilst most common issues have already been fixed through these files we have implemented specific exception traps to direct you to the files to enable you to fix any further issues due to different usage or data scenarios that we have not tested. An example error that you can fix through these files is shown below. Buffer exception writing value to column 'Column Name'. The string value is 999 characters in length, the column is only 111. Columns can be overridden by the TraceDataColumns XML files in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\PipelineComponents\TraceDataColumnsAS.xml". Installation The component is provided as an MSI file which you can download and run to install it. This simply places the files on disk in the correct locations and also installs the assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache as per Microsoft’s recommendations. You may need to restart the SQL Server Integration Services service, as this caches information about what components are installed, as well as restarting any open instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. Finally you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox manually. Right-click the toolbox, and select Choose Items.... Select the SSIS Data Flow Items tab, and then check the Trace File Source transformation in the Choose Toolbox Items window. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component? We recommend you follow best practice and apply the current Microsoft SQL Server Service pack to your SQL Server servers and workstations. Please note that the Microsoft Trace classes used in the component are not supported on 64-bit platforms. • Flash video playing on top of everything else in IE7

  Hi everyone, I've been spending hours now reading up on IE7's issue with rendering Flash content on top of other elements, particularly navigation menus (this is often a problem with dropdown menus and Flash ad banners, for example). I've tried a few of the suggested solutions but none have worked for me so far. I'll do my best to explain the circumstances, and would appreciate any advice in the matter! These menus have z-indexes in the 300X range to appear above the footpanel. The Flash in question is JW player playing a flash video or mp4. Currently, the object and embed tags are inside a container div. My understanding of previous solutions was that the combination of the param changes and the positioning/z-index change on the container div should have resolved the issue. Alas, it is not so. The player resides on top of the footpanel. Other information that may or may not be helpful is that the page is XHTML 1.0 Transitional and that Dreamweaver reports 1 error in the HTML code: <embed> is not in the XHTML 1.0 specification. This fact does not prevent the video from being viewed in any browser tested, and the page still displays correctly in FF. Thanks in advance!
