• Handling a mix of server side code and html in a resource file?

  I'm trying to convert an ASP.NET web application to use resource files. I haven't used resource files before, so I'm just toying around with them and was wondering if this is possible. I have a message that returns from a search when no results are found, that prompts the user to return to the home page. A lot of these pages have methods to determine what is the proper page to send the user to, so there are many sections with markup similar to this: Sorry, but we could not find an item matching your search criteria. Please adjust your search criteria or <a href="<%= SomeMethodToDetermineUri() %>">return to (SomePage)</a>. So basically, some type of message, followed by a link or a list of links. Getting the message part works fine, it's the server side code to generate links thats the problem. What is the best way to put that into a resource file? It is able to recognize the html link part just fine, but the server side code gets inserted as plain text. Is the only way to break it into 2 resources? (Which seems messy) <%= Resources.Master.NoSearchResultsFound %> <a href="<%= SomeMethodToDetermineUri() %>"> <%= Resources.Master.NoSearchResultsFoundReturnLinkText %> </a>. Or is there a way to get the page to evaluate the server code?

• Low Throughput on Windows Named Pipe Over WAN

  I'm having problems with low performance using a Windows named pipe. The throughput drops off rapidly as the network latency increases. There is a roughly linear relationship between messages sent per second and round trip time. It seems that the client must ack each message before the server will send the next one. This leads to very poor performance, I can only send 5 (~100 byte) messages per second over a link with an RTT of 200 ms. The pipe is asynchronous, using multiple overlapped write operations (and multiple overlapped reads at the client end), but this is not improving throughput. Is it possible to send messages in parallel over a named pipe? The pipe is created using PIPE_TYPE_MESSAGE, would PIPE_READMODE_BYTE work better? Is there any other way I can improve performance? This is a deployed solution, so I can't simply replace the pipe with a socket connection (I've read that Windows named pipe aren't recommended for use over a WAN, and I'm wondering if this is why). I'd be grateful for any help with this matter.

• Make joomla blog link to inner pages(or blog roll post actual)

  So i was told to create a blog for client in Joomla and, i have minimal knowledge of Joomla inner workings. I made the blog as seen here http://www.assurancepower.com/about-us/blog.html But the problem is that, the headers/titles for each story in that blog roll cant be clicked. Im wondering is there a way i can make this happen? Essentially this page is a collection of the stories and i want to be able to click on a particular one (any of them) and be taken to its inner page/full version of the story. Not exactly sure what im supposed to do/search for. Im not sure if joomla has a wordpress like functions.php or for example, is there somewhere i can instert a....maybe something like how wordpress does it with permalinks like so: <?php permalink(); ?> //title link here to the actual story. or something like <?php bloginfo('url');?>// this relative link for WP. Etc, All i want is to be able to have these titles in this story be active links to their full counterpart. Not sure what to look for/how to go about fixing this. Thanks in advanced.

• Making alarm clock with NSTimer

  I just went through trying to make an alarm clock app with local notifications but that didn't do the trick because I needed an alert to appear instead of it going into notification centre in iOS 5+ So far I've been struggling greatly with nstimer and its functions so I was wondering if anyone could help out. I want when the user selects a time (through UIDatePicker, only time) for an alert to be displayed at exactly this time. I have figured out how to get the time from UIDatePicker but I do not know how to properly set the firing function of nstimer. This is what I have attempted so far, if anyone could help... be much appreciated. • Good functions and techniques for dealing with haskell tuples?

  I've been doing a lot of work with tuples and lists of tuples recently and I've been wondering if I'm being sensible. Things feel awkward and clunky which for me signals that I'm doing something wrong. For example I've written three convenience functions for getting the first, second and third value in a tuple of 3 values. Is there a better way I'm missing? Are there more general functions that allow you to compose and manipulate tuple data? Here are some things I am trying to do that feel should be generalisable. Extracting values: Do I need to create a version of fst,snd,etc... for tuples of size two, three, four and five, etc...? fst3(x,_,_) = x fst4(x,_,_,_) = x Manipulating values: Can you increment the last value in a list of pairs and then use that same function to increment the last value in a list of triples? Zipping and Unzipping values: There is a zip and a zip3. Do I also need a zip4? or is there some way of creating a general zip function? Sorry if this seems subjective, I honestly don't know if this is even possible or if I'm wasting my time writing 3 extra functions every time I need a general solution.   Being new to this i realy am trying to learn how to keep code as simple as possible, whilst doing the job its supposed to. The question i have done is from project eulur, it says Each new term in the Fibonacci sequence is generated by adding the previous two terms. By starting with 1 and 2, the first 10 terms will be: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, ... Find the sum of all the even-valued terms in the sequence which do not exceed four million. Here is my code below, i was wondering what the best way of simplifying this would be, for a start removing all of the .get(list.length()-1 )..... stuff would be a good start if possible but i dont really no how to?   I've got a set of data that looks something like this (VERY simplified): productId Qty dateOrdered --------- --- ----------- 1 2 10/10/2008 1 1 11/10/2008 1 2 10/10/2009 2 3 10/12/2009 1 1 10/15/2009 2 2 11/15/2009 Out of this, we're trying to create a query to get something like: productId Year Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec --------- ---- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- 1 2008 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 1 0 1 2009 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 2 2009 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 2 0 The way I'm doing this now, I'm doing 12 selects, one for each month, and putting those in temp tables. I then do a giant join. Everything works, but this guy is dog slow. I know this isn't much to go on, but knowing that I barely qualify as a tyro in the db world, I'm wondering if there is a better high level approach to this that I might try. (I'm guessing there is.) (I'm using MS Sql Server, so answers that are specific to that DB are fine.) (I'm just starting to look at "PIVOT" as a possible help, but I don't know anything about it yet, so if someone wants to comment about that, that might be helpful as well.)

• Is it possible to cache all the data in a SQL Server CE database using LinqToSql?

  I'm using LinqToSql to query a small, simple SQL Server CE database. I've noticed that any operations involving sub-properties are disappointingly slow. For example, if I have a Customer table that is referenced by an Order table, LinqToSql will automatically create an EntitySet<Order> property. This is a nice convenience, allowing me to do things like Customer.Order.Where(o => o.ProductName = "Stopwatch"), but for some reason, SQL Server CE hangs up pretty bad when I try to do stuff like this. One of my queries, which isn't really that complicated takes 3-4 seconds to complete. I can get the speed up to acceptable, even fast, if I just grab the two tables individually and convert them to List<Customer> and List<Order>, then join then manually with my own query, but this is throwing out a lot of what makes LinqToSql so appealing. So, I'm wondering if I can somehow get the whole database into RAM and just query that way, then occasionally save it. Is this possible? How? If not, is there anything else I can do to boost the performance besides resorting to doing all the joins manually? Note: My database in its initial state is about 250K and I don't expect it to grow to more than 1-2Mb. So, loading the data into RAM certainly wouldn't be a problem from a memory point of view. • Ruby on Rails AJAX call affects only the first element in collection

  I'm iterating over a collection of elements and trying to get AJAX to work properly on a specific element within the collection. I'm nesting a few partials in order to iterate over these items and use a js.erb call like this: $('#favorite_form').html("<%=j render partial: 'shared/unfavorite', locals: { mission: @mission } %>"); This only seems to change the 1st item in the collection even though I could be clicking the 5th item down the list, for example. Question: How can I specify (via .js and AJAX) which element to update? Is this jQuery call not specific enough to the individual element? • Audio Streaming Latency

  I'm writing a UDP local area network video chat system and have got the video and audio streams working. However I'm experiencing a little latency (about half a second) in the audio and was wondering what codecs would provide the least latency. I'm using NAudio (http://naudio.codeplex.com/) which provides me access to the following codecs for streaming; Speex Narrow Band (VBR) Speex Wide Band (16kHz)(VBR) Speex Ultra Wide Band (32kHz)(VBR) DSP Group TrueSpeech (8.5kbps) GSM 6.10 (13kbps) Microsoft ADPCM (32.8kbps) G.711 a-law (64kbps) G.722 16kHz (64kbps) G.711 mu-law (64kbps) PCM 8kHz 16 bit uncompressed (128kbps) I've tried them out and I'm not noticing much difference. Is there any others that I should download and try to reduce latency? I'm only going to be sending voice over the connection but I'm not really worried about quality or background noises too much. • custom sorting or ordering a table without resorting the whole shebang

  for ten years we've been using the same custom sorting on our tables, i'm wondering if there is another solution which involves fewer updates, especially since today we'd like to have a replication/publication date and would'nt like to have our replication replicate unnecessary entries. i had a look into nested sets, but it does'nt seem to do the job for us. base table: id | a_sort ---+------- 1 10 2 20 3 30 after inserting insert into table (a_sort) values(15) an entry at the second position. id | a_sort ---+------- 1 10 2 20 3 30 4 15 ordering the table with select * from table order by a_sort and resorting all the a_sort entries, updating at least id=(2,3,4) will of course produce the desired output id | a_sort ---+------- 1 10 4 20 2 30 3 40 the column names, the column count, datatypes, a possible join, possible triggers or the way the resorting is done is/are irrelevant to the problem. also we've found some pretty neat ways to do this task fast. only; how the heck can we reduce the updates in the db to 1 or 2 max. seems like an awfully common problem. the captain obvious in me thougth once "use an a_sort float(53), insert using a fixed value of ordervaluefirstentry+abs(ordervaluefirstentry-ordervaluenextentry)/2".. but this would only allow around 1040 "in between" entries - so never resorting seems a bit problematic ;)

• Finding out the windows group by virtue of which a user is able to access a database in sql server?

  There is a SQL Server 2005 database with mixed-mode authentication. Among others, we have the following logins on the server: our-domain\developers-group-1, and our-domain\developers-group-2 which are AD groups. The our-domain\developer-group-2 is added to the sysadmin role on the server, by virture of which all domain users of that group can access any database as SQL Server implictly maps the sysadmin role to the dbo user in each database. There are two users our-domain\good-user and our-domain\bad-user The issue is the following: Both the good-user and the bad-user have the exact same AD group memberships. They are both members of our-domain\developers-group-1 and our-domain\developers-group-2. The good-user is able to access all the databases, and the bad-user is not. The bad-user is able to login, but he is unable access any databases. By the way, I am the good-user. How do I go about finding out why? Here's what I tried so far: When I do print current_user, I get dbo When I do print system_user, I get my-domain\good-user When I do select * from fn_my_permissions(NULL, 'SERVER'), I see permissions. But if do execute as user='my-domain\good-user'; select * from fn_my_permissions(NULL, 'SERVER'), I dont see any permisisons. And When I do, execute as user='my-domain\bad-user'; select * from fn_my_permissions(NULL, 'SERVER'), I dont see any permisisons. Also, I was wondering if there is a sql command that will tell me, "hey! the current database user is able to access this database because he is a member such-and-such ad-group, which is a login that is mapped to such-and-such user in this database".

• measure the response time of a link

  I am trying to create a simple load balance script and I was wondering if it is possible to find the response time of a server live? By that I mean is it possible to measure how long it takes for a server to respond after the request has been sent out? What I am trying to do is fairly simple, I want to send a request to a link/server and do a count down, if the server took more than 5 seconds to reply, I would like to fall on the backup server. Note that it doesnt have to be in pure php, I wouldnt mind using other languages such as javascript, C/C++, asp, but I prefer to do it in PHP. if it is possible to do the task, could you just point me to the right direction so I can read up on it. Clarification What I want to do is not to download a file and see how long it took, my servers have high load and it takes a while for them to respond when you click on a file to download, what I want to do is to measure the time it takes the server to respond (in this situation, its the time it takes the server to respond and allow the user to download the file), and if it takes longer than x seconds, it should fall back on a backup server.

• How can you determine the file size in JavaScript?

  I help moderate a forum online, and on this forum we restrict the size of signatures. At the moment we test this via a simple Greasemonkey script I wrote; we wrap all signatures with a <div>, the script looks for them, and then measures the div's height and width. All the script does right now is make sure the signature resides in a particular height/width. I would like to start measuring the file size of the images inside of a signature automatically so that the script can automatically flag users who are including huge images in their signature. However, I can't seem to find a way to measure the size of images loaded on the page. I've searched and found a property special to IE (element.fileSize) but I obviously can't use that in my Greasemonkey script. Is there a way to find out the file size of an image in Firefox via JavaScript? Edit: People are misinterpreting the problem. The forums themselves do not host images; we host the BBCode that people enter as their signature. So, for example, people enter this: This is my signature, check out my [url=http://google.com]awesome website[/url]! This image is cool! [img]http://image.gif[/img] I want to be able to check on these images via Greasemonkey. I could write a batch script to scan all of these instead, but I'm just wondering if there's a way to augment my current script.

• Convert asp.net application to windows forms app

  I have written and deployed an ASP.NET application that is pretty complex. It uses XSL transformations to create web forms for a large variety of data objects. The data comes from the database as XML via a web service. Now, I need to create a Windows desktop application that will provide a small subset of the web applications functionality to a user who may not have access to the web (working in remote areas). I will provide the data syncing using the MS Sync Framework. And I will have the desktop use a local data store. I would like to use the same xslt files in the desktop app that I use in the web app for the form creation so that, if changes are made, the desktop app can update itself when it connects and syncs its data. But, I am wondering how to replicate the asp.net codebehind logic of my web app in the windows forms. If I use a browser control to render the XSLTransformation result, then how could I handle click events, etc, in the form? Also, can I launch other windows as "dialog boxes" from my windows forms (I do this in my web app using RadControls functionality)? Thanks for any advice you can give.

• Best approach to cache Counts from SQL tables ?

  I would like to develop a Forum from scratch, with special needs and customization. I would like to prepare my forum for intensive usage and wondering how to cache things like User posts count and User replies count. Having only three tables, tblForum, tblForumTopics, tblForumReplies, what is the best approach of cache the User topics and replies counts ? Think at a simple scenario: user press a link and open the Replies.aspx?id=x&page=y page, and start reading replies. On the HTTP Request, the server will run an SQL command wich will fetch all replies for that page, also "inner joining with tblForumReplies to find out the number of User replies for each user that replied." select tblForumReplies.*, tblFR.TotalReplies from tblForumReplies inner join ( select IdRepliedBy, count(*) as TotalReplies from tblForumReplies group by IdRepliedBy ) as tblFR on tblFR.IdRepliedBy = tblForumReplies.IdRepliedBy Unfortunately this approach is very cpu intensive, and I would like to see your ideas of how to cache things like table Counts. If counting replies for each user on insert/delete, and store it in a separate field, how to syncronize with manual data changing. Suppose I will manually delete Replies from SQL.

• Android designing an app to keep me logged into a wifi access point

  At the gym where I work out, they have an open wifi access point. The way it is set up, once you "connect", you have to navigate to a web page (it is a 1.1.X.X ip address) and click the "I agree" button, after presumably reading the user agreement. The problem is, they have it set up to log you out once an hour, which always happens in the middle of my workout. I have the SSID remembered, so it connects automatically when I come in range, but I get an android notification that further action is needed to fully connect. What I was wondering is if there a work around so that I don't have to click-through every hour? I was thinking of writing an app that could detect when I was in range, or when "half-connected", and then have it somehow complete the registration process. Perhaps this will have to be done by loading the web page in memory and then somehow clicking the "I agree" button. What I would like help with is: 1) what is the terminology involved here? What state is the connection in when I am connected, but I haven't clicked through? What other connection states may apply? If I knew that, I might just be able to research this and come up with a solution. Are these different states "detectable"? It seems like it is since I get a notification that I need to complete the registration process when I am "half-connected". 2) I know there are plugins for desktop browsers that can click buttons (like the keepass plugins, which will log you into a site). How could I replicate this in Android? Ideally I would like to do it internally, in memory, rather than firing up a browser. Possible? Comments? Is my understanding and thought process sound here, or am I overlooking something?

• Does implementing a Java class under an open-source library's package name constitutes a modificatio

  Greetings, I understand that this is not the best forum for getting legal advices. But I am still wondering if anybody has some experience around this topic, or can point me to relevant resources that explain it. I have tried to search it online but could not find clear answers. Assuming I am using a Java open-source library from "somecompany", specifically its entities in the "org.somecompany.somepackage". During development, I found that I need to access some of the internals of that package that are not exposed through its public interface. So I thought maybe creating my own classes under the same "org.somecompany.somepackage" name would make that easier. My question is: does this constitutes a modification of the open-source library? The fully qualified name of my classes look like "org.somecompany.somepackage.myclass". It does seem an "extension" of the original library, even though I am not modifying the original library source or binary. I am also not adding my classes to the open-source jar files. Any advice or pointer to resources will be appreciated!

• Layout question with BlackBerry IDE FieldManagers; how to emulate HTML's rowspan

  Hello all I'm trying to create a page where a list of items are displayed in a row where there are multiple columns on the left, but only one on the right, encased within a horizontialFieldManager. Currently I have the following code to attempt to do the following: VerticalFieldManager mainScreenManager = new VerticalFieldManager(); mainScreenManager.add(titleField); for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { HorizontalFieldManager itemAreaManager = new HorizontalFieldManager(); VerticalFieldManager itemTextFieldsAreaManager = new VerticalFieldManager(); itemTextFieldsAreaManager.add(new RichTextField(contentArticleTitle[i])); itemTextFieldsAreaManager.add(new RichTextField(contentArticleDate[i])); itemTextFieldsAreaManager.add(new SeparatorField()); itemAreaManager.add(itemTextFieldsAreaManager); itemAreaManager.add(new ButtonField("", 0)); mainScreenManager.add(itemAreaManager); }; add(mainScreenManager); Now the issue I'm experiencing is probably obvious to those familiar with managers; the horizontialFieldManager has the first item added to it consuming the entire width available, thereby never showing the button. What I'm wondering is how can I tell this in an extended class to only take up a certain percentage of the available width? I've tried subLayout and setting the width to be a certain amount, but it will just show the button instead of the text (pretty much same problem, just reversed)

• Java for loop with multiple incrementers

  Im writing a program which combines the RGB pixel values for 3 images, e.g. red pixel of image 1, green pixel of image 2 and blue pixel of image 3 and I want to then create a final image of it. Im using the code below, but this seems to be incrementing x2 and x3 whilst x1 is the same, i.e. not giving the right pixel value for same co-ordinate for each image. for (int x = 0; x < image.getWidth(); x++) { for (int x2 = 0; x2 < image2.getWidth(); x2++) { for (int x3 = 0; x3 < image3.getWidth(); x3++) { for (int y = 0; y < image.getHeight(); y++) { for (int y2 = 0; y2 < image2.getHeight(); y2++) { for (int y3 = 0; y3 < image3.getHeight(); y3++) { So I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to iterate through each of the 3 images on the same co-ordinate, so for example read 1, 1 of each image and record the red, green and blue value accordingly. Apologies if it doesnt make complete sense, its a bit hard to explain. I can iterate the values for one image fine but when I add in another, things start to go a bit wrong as obviously its quite a bit more complicated! I was thinking it might be easier to create an array and replace the according values in that just not sure how to do that effectively either. Thanks
