• Is there a Windows equivalent of Unix 'CPU steal time'?

  In order to assess performance monitoring accuracy on virtualization platforms, the CPU steal time has become an increasingly relevant metric - see EC2 monitoring: the case of stolen CPU for an instructive summary in the context of Amazon EC2 and IBM's paper on CPU time accounting for a more in-depth technical explanation (including illustrations) of the concept: Steal time is the percentage of time a virtual CPU waits for a real CPU while the hypervisor is servicing another virtual processor. Accordingly, it is exposed in most related Unix/Linux monitoring tools nowadays - see e.g. columns %steal or st in sar or top: st -- Steal Time The amount of CPU 'stolen' from this virtual machine by the hypervisor for other tasks (such as running another virtual machine). I've been unable to figure out how to capture the same metric on Windows though, is this possible already? (Ideally for the Windows 2008 Server R2 AMIs on EC2 and via a respective Windows Performance Counters of course.)

  I have a server which is running a few discrete Python, Java application which most of the time imports data into a PostGreSQL database. I would like to know from people out there who have experience tuning enterprise grade servers how do i go about calculating in a holistic way the amount of tuning needed for my server for example vm.swappiness, vm.overcommit_ratio and other numerical tunings needed for my server. I tried to enable sar on my server to capture daily numbers but these are more along the lines of total numbers and I can't figure out how to allocate memory for my applications. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Poor upload/download speed on 2 x ADSL lines into a Cisco 2621XM

I have users complaining of very slow internetn connectivity on site and have checked with our ISP who have said that the line is testing at 8mb. We have 2 x BT lines that have our ISP broadand on them. Both lines go into a Cisco 2600 series router that then has a PIX firewall off that. Connectivity is successful just gone really slow and unable to download anything. • Where should CentOS users get /usr/share/virtio-win/drivers for virt-v2v?

  I need to migrate a number of virtual machines from VMware ESX to CentOS 6 KVM hypervisors. Ultimately, I wrote an RPM spec file that solved my problem at https://github.com/fasrc/virtio-win/blob/master/virtio-win.spec but I'm not sure if there's another RPM in base CentOS or EPEL (something standard) I should be using instead. Originally, I was getting this "No root device found in this operating system image" error when attemting to migrate a Window 2008 VM. . . [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm virt-v2v: No root device found in this operating system image. . . . but I solved this with a simply yum install libguestfs-winsupport since the docs say: If you attempt to convert a virtual machine using NTFS without the libguestfs-winsupport package installed, the conversion will fail. Next I got an error about missing drivers for Windows 2008. . . • Are there any tools for monitoring individual Apache virtual hosts in real-time?

  I'm looking for a way to monitor and record Apache traffic, separated by virtual host. I am currently using Munin to capture this and other data for the entire server however I can't seem to find a way to do this by vhost. This link describes using a module called mod_watch which is apparently no longer in development: http://www.freshnet.org/wordpress/2007/03/08/monitoring-apaches-virtualhost-with-munin/ The file that is listed as being compatible with Apache 2.x is reported to have problems with missing vhosts an reporting data correctly. Does anyone know of a reliable way to determine real-time traffic per vhost? If I can find this it should be easy enough to write a new Munin plugin. Edit: What I'd really like to see is something similar to the Apache server-status scoreboard page with the number of connections / requests separated by virtual host. This would give me the ability to check which vhost may be experiencing a spike in traffic in real time and would also provide the data needed for a Munin module (or some alternative performance monitoring / analysis system.)

  I needed some coordinates for a HTML MAP and tried to use inkskape by opening the image and just draw a path with my polygon coordinates. The original image The SVG file from inkscape Link to SVG Progress: I tried a tool called InkscapeMap which looks promising and simple, but unfortunately it looks like it didn't work with this particular svn file. Solved! Saving the file as a Plain SVG solved the problem and InkscapeMap worked perfectly. (Btw. saving as an optimized svg caused a parsing error) Update 13.11 Using inkscapeMap 0.6 and Inkscape 0.48 i needed to uncheck relative coordinates in SVG output preferences. Also if you get a C error message, hunt down the polygon with a C in it, and redraw the polygon using the XML editor in inkscape. • Syslog - capturing event logs from Win2k boxes

  Hi all, I asked this question in SuperUser without much luck and so I am posting it here to see if anyone can assist. We have a central syslog server and we want it to capture event log events from Windows hosts. We are specifically interested in logging service start/stop events. We installed "Eventlog to Syslog" on these windows hosts and all works well with XP hosts (Events come from Service Control Manager). However, we are having issues with Win2k hosts. For some reason, service start/stop events do not get logged in the Event Log for Win2k hosts. I got another friend from another company to test on a Win2k host and he does get start/stop events on them. I have searched around for local audit policies i need to enable but with not much luck. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Windows 7 disk backup and clone for deployment to multiple systems

  I'm in the process of deploying some new PCs (there's only 8), all identical hardware. What I'd like to do is install Windows 7 (64bit), join to domain etc, install a bunch of other software, and then clone that drive to multiple other machines. I'd also like to be able to use it as a backup image, so the machine can be restored back to that image at some future date. I understand this involves at least sysprep, but I am confused after reading some tutorials that talk about using Windows Automated Installation Kit, or hacks with the registry and custom-build batch files. This process seems overly complex to me: I did something similar 10+ years ago, and and don't remember it being this bad. Surely things have improved in a decade? There's also some products that involve having network servers running deployment software, network boot, etc etc.. this is way more than I want to set up. My systems are all identical hardware. Is there a simplified way to clone PCs? Preferably (since I'm a lazy developer, and not an IT admin) I'd like to find some off-the-shelf product that I can run after I get the machine setup, that will spit out a bootable DVD I can run on all the other systems, which will boot up, ask for a computer name, join it to the domain, and that's it. Does such as product exist?

• How to rescue from an SD (SDHC) card that I can't reformat (possible hardware failure)

  I have a transcend 16GB SDHC card and a lot of photos on it that I'd like to recover. When I plug it into the SD card reader, it takes a while for the Mac to even recognize that there's a disk present, and it shows up as 1.07GB with geometry 520/64/63 (according to fdisk). First I tried file recovery: PhotoRec: no files are found (the images are in CR2 format and I'm using testdisk-6.14-WIP which claims to recognize that format under TIF) dd / ddrescue: they create a 1.07GB image, same problem as above TestDisk: doesn't find any partitions to recover I found a source saying that the correct geometry for this type of SD Card is Heads 255, Sectors/Track 63, Cylinders 1953, so I tried manually setting that geometry in PhotoRec/TestDisk. No improvement. Next I tried formatting the disk with fdisk. After writing and quitting, I ran fdisk again and it reported that the new format hadn't been saved on the disk. I also tried resetting the format/partitions with TestDisk and that failed also. The fdisk log is below. I don't really care about the card, I've already ordered a new SanDisk card. But I'd like to get the data off. Maybe, is there any way to force dd or some other tool to create an image of the disk based on the original geometry and not on what the card "thinks" its geometry is? Or am I missing something?

• How can I re-encode H.264 video with minimal quality loss?

  I have a lot of MPEG-TS files (.TS container but H.264 video) and playback is fine except that when you skip forward/backward or fast forward it's very sluggish and gets pixelated, etc. I've been trying to do research and I'm guessing that they were encoding with very few reference blocks (ie. it's a capture from a DVB-S satellite stream). When I re-encode them with Handbrake (.MP4 container) they play very, very good and seeking in the video is instant, etc, etc. Is it possible to transcode/re-encode my MPEG-TS files with minimal quality loss? If so, what is my best bet? They are each about 2 Mbps (ie. 2 GB per hour) but I don't want to re-encode them if "minimal quality loss" requires 10+ GB per file. I'm hoping to keep the video are the same size. Can anybody give me any advice?

  I'm brand new to nginx and I am trying to convert the app I wrote over from Apache as I need the ability to serve a lot of clients at once without a lot of overhead! • Gmail and FB is not rendering properly in Firefox

  I am unable read Gmail in my Firefox browser on my laptop. However, there are no problems when I try to access Gmail on my office desktop. In fact, Gmail renders fine on IE on both computers. Things I have tried: Uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. Using Firefox 3.6.26 and Firefox 10; same problem. Clearing the cache. But all to no avail. For starters: My background image does not get loaded. It says "Oops. Your selected image failed to load". The buttons for the new look do not get rendered, but when I do a mouse-over I see text which helps me navigate. When I try to read a message, I see the subject line and I see the reply / forward box. The message body does not get rendered, it seems like a styling error. • Sync desktop Mac environment to laptop

  I spend the majority of my time working at my desktop Mac, which I have configured for my web development environment. My spouse has a MacBook for casual use, and I occasionally steal it back when I need to work off-site, or when travelling. The question is how to best synchronize the two so I can switch between them more readily. I've solved a few obvious things by using online services: Email is hosted on IMAP. Working files are in Dropbox. Source code is managed in git. However, the following are things I always miss when jumping on the laptop: Installed Applications (current versions) Installed libraries & utilities (/usr/local) Apache VirtualHosts & other configurations (/etc) Disk image files for VMs My current method is to connect the MacBook via Firewire target mode and rsync the /Users/me home directory, and then cherry-pick the other items I need from Applications, /etc and /usr/local. The problem with this method is that it can be very time consuming due to things like my virtual machine image files, cached emails, etc. How can I make this faster & easier? Can you recommend a solution for configuration management (so I can repeatably install & configure the same software on both), or synchronization (so I can bring the MacBook up to date nightly, over our home network)?

• Terminal server performance over high latency links

  Our datacenter and head office is currently in Brisbane, Australia, and we have a branch office in the UK. We have a private WAN with a 768k link to our UK office and the latency is at about 350ms. The terminal server performance is reeeeealy bad. Applications that don't have too much animation or any images seem to be okay. But as soon as they do, the session is almost unusable. Powerpoint and internet explorer are good examples of apps that make it run slow. And if there is an image in your email signature, outlook will hang for about 10 seconds each time a new line is inserted, while the image gets moved down a few pixels. We are currently running server 2003. I have tried Server 2008 R2 RDS, and also a third party solution called Blaze by a company called Ericom, but it is still not too much better. We currently have a 5 levels dynamic class of service with the priority in the following order. VoIP Video Terminal Services Printing Everything else When testing the terminal server performance, the link monitored using net-flows, and have plenty we of bandwidth available, so I believe that it is a latency issue rather than bandwidth. Is there anything that can be done to improve performance. Would citrix help at all?

• Confused about the Windows 7 Preinstallation Kit

  I build custom PCs and would like to use the Windows 7 Preinstallation Kit to make installation go a little quicker and customize the Windows image. However, since each PC is built to a particular customer's specifications, the hardware will rarely be the same. So, I would like to have a single answer file that will work for everything. I'm not sure if that's possible, however. What I mostly want to do for now is add my support information as well as pre-set anything that I would normally change after each installation completes. I have a Windows 7 Professional Upgrade DVD set (both 32-bit and 64-bit), but no OEM disks. I copied the Install.wim file to my local drive and opened it in the Windows System Image Manager, but it asks me to choose a catalog file specifically for each edition of Windows 7. Will this limit the answer file to whichever edition I choose? I would think choosing Starter would give me the most basic settings, which would apply to all other editions, but I'm not entirely sure of this. I don't intend to install any extra applications or drivers. I merely want to insert an OEM disk, my OPK USB drive, and have it work for whatever edition of Windows 7 I'm installing. If a large number of similarly-configured PCs need to be built, I'll go ahead and create a custom answer file in that case, but for a single machine order, that seems like overkill. In addition, do I need a separate answer file for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7? Or will it work for both, even though I copied the Install.wim file from the 32-bit disk? Thanks!

• TvTuner as webcamera

  Hi, I have decent TVTuner which can capture both analog signal & HDMI. I am able to connect my camera and see output of it in realtime in VirtualDub. I want to be able to use it in Skype and other software which use webcams. The problem is that they only use first "videoinput" of my videodevice, but HDMI is 3rd, and there is no interface to switch (in Skype for example)... So could you suggest any "proxy" software which can take video from Tuner, and show as a webcam?

• 401 Using Multiple Authentication methods IE 10 only

  I am not sure if this is more of a coding issue or server setup issue so I've posted it on stackoverflow and here... On our production site we've run into an issue that is specific to Internet Explorer 10. I am using jQuery doing an ajax POST to a web service on the same domain and in IE10 I am getting a 401 response, IE9 works perfectly fine. I should mention that we have mirrored code in another area of our site and it works perfectly fine in IE10. The only difference between the two areas is that one is under a subdomain and the other is at the root level. www.my1stdomain.com vs. portal.my2nddomain.com The directory structure on the server for these are: \my1stdomain\webservice\name\service.aspx \portal\webservice\name\service.aspx Inside of the \portal\ and \my1stdomain\ folders I have a page that does an ajax call, both pages are identical. $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: '/webservice/name/service.aspx/function', cache: false, contentType: 'application/json; charset=utf-8', dataType: 'json', data: '{ "json": "data" }', success: function() { }, error: function() { } }); I've verified permissions are the same on both folders on the server side. I've applied a workaround fix of placing the <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" value="IE=9"> to force compatibility view (putting IE into compatibility mode fixes the issue). This seems to be working in IE10 on Windows 7, however IE 10 on Windows 8 still sees the same issue. These pages are classic asp with the headers that are being included, also there are no other meta tags being used. The doctype is being specified as <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> on the portal page and <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> on the main domain. UPDATE1 I used Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4 on the server to capture the request. • Remote Desktop Session Black after Minimize

  PROBLEM: When I minimize a remote desktop session and restore it, the remote desktop screen shows up black. This only happens when connecting to a particular computer. DETAILS: If I start clicking around in the black area, portions of the screen will start redrawing and showing up correctly. For example, if I leave a window open in the remote session and click where that window is located on the remote computer, then that window--and only that window--will redraw, and sometimes a portion of that window won't redraw (usually the toolbar). And to clarify--the window only has to be minimized momentarily, so it doesn't seem to be a timeout issue. Clicking or typing in the remote session still causes the remote computer to respond appropriately. Disconnecting from the session and reconnecting restores the whole screen image, as does clicking all over the place in the black image (causing each section to redraw). CONFIGURATION: This problem only happens for me when connecting to a particular computer (a W2K Server box configured to allow remote administration) and only with certain client computers. I've tried 7 different client computers with various versions of Remote Desktop (the OSes were: Win2K, Server 2003, Server 2008, Windows 7 RC, 3 XP) and two of them exhibit the problem (one is one of the XP boxes and the other is Windows 7). Those same computers can RDP to other computers without problem. RESOLUTION ATTEMPTS: I have tried the following: Disable the LOCAL screen saver as mentioned on Technet Turned off bitmap caching in the client, as mentioned on many forums. Updated to version 6.1 of the remote desktop client Using mRemote (I doubted this would work since it uses MS's code for connecting to RDP servers) Turning off all video acceleration. QUESTION: Any ideas on what is causing this?

• Going from imagex/AIK to WDT

  I was looking learning Windows Deployment Toolkit. I have been using AIK to create answer files and sysprep to clean the referece computer and imagex to capture and apply images. I have some .wim files I need to keep (they also have an answer file in them). I was wondering, if I start using WDT, can I import these images and have WDT deploy them or do I have to start over with capturing the images using WDT? If I can import, how do you deploy them in the same manner that imagex would use the images internal answer file using WDT? Leon

• BIOS corrupted? How to proceed? Acer Travelmate 290

  I have a older ACER Travelmate 290 (manufactured in 2002 or 2003), which I recently tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10. After doing the upgrade process it appeared as if I had a problem with my x server configuration, as on the first reboot post-install I heard the Ubuntu startup sound, but had a black screen. I thought I would then reboot again to drop down into text-mode to trouble shoot the x configuration problem. However, when I tried rebooting, something went wrong and since then when I start up the machine I get absolutely nothing except the first hardware check (i.e. HDD light flashes, CD/DVD drive spins, etc.). Other than that the screen remains totally black and I have no HDD or processor activity at all. I have tried restarting it a number of time holding down all kinds of key combinations to try and coax it into the BIOS (if possible) with no luck. I have also tried putting in both a live Linux disc and a Windows install disk without any luck. With a disk in the drive it will spin for a few seconds and then stop. All this has lead me to suspect that the BIOS is somehow corrupt (not sure about the right terminology). I have tried putting a new BIOS image and installer program downloaded from ACER on a USB key to see if it will run when I start up the machine, but no luck. I'm not sure if this method of interacting/updating/flashing the BIOS will work outside of Windows/DOS as both OSs are mentioned kind of ambiguously in the documentation. I have also taken the laptop case apart and inspected the various cards and cannot find any obviously burned out components. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point in terms of components to try, or how to try and load a new BIOS image onto the board. Any advice here would be great, especially from those with experience with this particular line of laptops. Thanks!

  When copying or extracting files, Windows 8 shows the chart with the speed of the operation. I noticed several patterns: Randomness, High speed at the beginning, then low speed during the most part of the operation, Mostly constant speed. 1. Randomness/nice mountains. 2. High speed at the beginning, then low speed during the most part of the operation. 3. Low speed at the beginning, then high speed during the most part of the operation. (Similar to the previous image, but inverted) 3. Mostly constant speed. (Same as previous image, but without the fast start) I'm curious, what each of those patterns mean? Do some indicate that there may be a problem with hard disk performance? Why the nearly constant speed is so rare, even when copying a single large file from and to a spinning drive, or when copying a single large file or a bunch of small files from and to an SSD?

• How to install service packs onto Thin Apps and other questions

  I have a VM that I use to do all my ThinApps, Once I have done my application and its built I copy just the bin folder to a server which has a share, I then create a shortcut to the program exe on users desktops. This all seems to work ok. Firstly is this correct? If so, how then do I apply a service pack to that application after the ThinApp VM has been reverted to a base image, I have corel draw which i have a service pack for but it wont intall it as its saying it cant find the package installed on the computer. I have Thinreg batch file so have included corel into that and the program appears in the program list. I have the sandbox redirected to the server share mentioned earlier into seperate user folders when the user logs in. Obvisouly once i have done a App I revert to a previous snapshop so my thinapp vm is back to base image, so the corel install is lost. Sorry if im missing something very simple. Is its a case if you have an exe/msp you have to reinstall the whole app again and start over, Thanks for any help.

• Monit - script not being executed as expected

  I'm working on a Windows 7 machine, having a VM for Ubuntu (image disk: 12.04-desktop-i386.iso). On the VM I installed Monit 5.3.2, and configured some processes and applications. So I created a script to run my application. This application should display some content on the screen (Im basically displaying two images, using Feh). The thing is: if I call my script through the command line, it runs ok, and display the images. But if I run through monit, it seems to be running ok, but it doesn't display the images.In the case I try to debug it (remote debug), then I can see the images. So I was supposing this could be some kind of configuration, but didn't find out what (even using the option -I wou'ldn't work).
