• How did Google get on my Mac?

  Am running a MacBook Pro, and have never installed Chrome, Google Earth, or anything blatantly Google. Just installed Little Snitch (are there no good free firewalls for Mac?) and see that CURL is sending to Google every few minutes, as is a request to Google update and more. Little Snitch doesn't say what program setup these requests. So, how do I find out how G got on my machine, why is it sending so many requests (every minute or so) and how do I remove it (and is it there for reasons other than to help G spy on me)?

• ACHI drivers for W8.1 with amd

  I hope you can help me... I just installed a SSD (Samsung EVO 840) and windows 8.1 pro in my pc with M5A99X EVO ( chipset AMD 990X/SB950 ) motherboard. The SSD is installed in sata3 socket using a sata3 wire. The AHCI mode is ON in the bios. I configured the ahci controller and now device administrator looks like this: All works, but the speed of the SDD is very slow (like a HDD). Samsung magician doesn't recognize the sata mode neither the ahci. I tried to install more drivers but the system broke and I need to reinstall windows :( I tried many things from the web, but any works: Modify windows registy Use compatibility mode Modify the amd drivers and install it unsigned Thank you for your time!! • Quickbooks Error - Can't turn off auto updates

  My company uses quickbooks pro 2002 and unfortunately they won't upgrade at this time, the program keeps freezing and giving methe error: This action cannot be completed because this program is busy.. Then asks to switch or retry, I tracked it down to being an issue with IE since it's an old program and can't use the new versions of IE (the program uses IE for it's interface for some STUPID reason). Everyone says to disable auto updates but the problem is that I can't get to the options area to disable the updates (the options area uses IE!!!) so I'm screwed, I have to sit there and click retry 40-50 times several times a day and it's driving me nutz. I've been looking online for days but have not found a solution to this predicament. Is there a way to disable auto updates through the configuration files? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  Hi everyone, I was wondering which policies, etc I could setup to stop any installations from occurring in a server 2003 domain environment? I have 2003 RC2 and XP Pro clients. I guess the quick easy way is to make everyone guests, but this also blocks them from other things that they might need to do/access. I've seen a lot of ideas but they do not fully block everything. • Mac OS X Time Machine Restore - Failure?

  I've got an late 2009 macbook pro 13' and yesterday I replaced the native hd (new hd: Hitachi; same form factor). I choosed "Restore from Time Machine" in the options menu on the snow leopard install discs and waited several hours to complete. After an reboot the mac shows up a white screen with apple logo and tiny loading animation. Nothing happens. After another restart; the same. Now I cant boot from CD using the C-Key and I have no idea how to fix that problem.

• How to setup VM in KVM? Qcow or LVM etc.

  Finally, after quite a bit of this vs that, I have chosen to virtualize a couple of my servers with KVM. I did do a test setup as well, but I have a few questions about setting VM's in KVM. Would appreciate pointers. What is the best storage to use - Qcow2 or LVM? I like the fact that I can copy the VM file easily with a Qcow2 but what about LVM, how do I take a backup or make copy on a development server to play with? I know I can clone a LVM, but how do I bring to my development server? How do I setup the guest partitioning? For example, when setting up Ubuntu inside Ubuntu, do I choose LVM for that VM or regular fdisk partitioning? Can I increase the partition size then later, if I need a bigger disk?

• Multiple .bkf files created in Backupexec 12.5 or 2010 related to heavy I/O?

  Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone who has used backupexec 12.5 or 2010 have ever experienced multiple .bkf files created for a single job. To describe what I mean by multiple files, the .bkf are being created with random file sizes under 2GB even though I've assigned the setting to chop the file after 10GB size. Some jobs will create 20x .bkf files in 1 job with file chunks ranging from 50MB to 800MB sizes. Is this is a sign of heavy I/O issues? Bandwidth limitations? I'm not sure, I'm here to seek some advices and suggestions. I've setup another backup server with the same exact settings and they seem to create a new .bkf file when 10GB limit has been reached. Although I am backing up different machines but I know my settings are an exact match to the problematic or atleast I think it's a problem.

  I have about 70 pc's with exactly same hardware. I decided to automate turning on and off. I took 1 PC. Here is what I've done: Changed bios configuration so that now pc's waking when I turn on AC switch Installed Windows XP and configured so that I can turn off remotelly, changed workgroup name to "WG1", and pc name to "ExamPC" Then created acronis backup image of this pc I installed this image in several PC's and tried to test All worked well till windows opened. The problem is, all tested PC's started Windows nearly at the same time, and all of them popped up error Duplicate name exist. I can't figure out any solution. Any suggestions?

• What is the pixel clock setting on my monitor actually doing?

  I am experiencing display interference on a dell 24" flat panel monitor.I find that if I adjust the pixel clock settings up or down in the monitor's on-screen menus, the interference goes away for a while. The monitor is attached to a Macbook Pro using a mini display to VGA adapter. I have found that in a different house, I get the interference problem less so it might be related to electricity supply or possibly even ethernet powerline (total guess). What does the pixel clock setting actually do and does this behaviour point to a likely cause of the interference?

  I think I have the Netscape mail-directory from old computer, how do I copy it to new computer? (Netscape 7.1 Mail, Thunderbird or Seamonkey). I think I have the files in Olduserbackup\xjuwtwtb.slt\Mail I create a new mail account with server pop.superuser.com, and find a directory with that name in C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Profiles\default\ou6umlif.slt\Mail I replace the files with those from the backup, but Netscape still shows pop.superuser.com in its interface. Is there some kind of registry setting somewhere I will have to change?

I am not clear as what software can be used for this on Linux or Windows. I have users which use Windows and Linux both. I have used video editing on Mac using Final Cut Pro but the video on the above link is not some thing which can be achieved with FCP.(Or may be I am not aware) I am looking solution for 1) Linux users 2) Windows users In case of Linux it is Ubuntu for some users and Fedora for some others. I am a Linux guy so I am specifically posting this question in terms of Ubuntu but I also need suggestions for Windows type of users.I have no clue of such video animations at all.

• Mysterious xyz.event files appearing

  I am getting mysterious .event files - always empty, created by me a few weeks ago - in several local project directories. They are all Subversion checkouts. They are always named after the directory they reside in, so a directory named pagination will contain a pagination.event file. Does anybody know what this is? Possibly important information: I am working on a Windows 7 Workstation I use NuSphere's PHP IDE (no updates recently) I use TortoiseSVN for version control I set up a Windows 7 backup job recently that ran once, I can' remember when exactly. The event files seem to turn up only in repositories There is no external access to those repositories

• Phantom Local Disks appearing in my drive list

  I seem to have several phantom Local Disks mapped to different letters that are of 0 bytes in size. Strangely, they do not show up when I view my drives through Windows Explorer. But if I open an application such as ACDSee Pro or MS Word and then go to open a file I can see all these Local Disks mapped to different letters. This means when I plug in my external hard disk it ends up mapped to letter R instead of its usual G which messes up any programs I have pointing to it by default. How did they get there and more importantly, how do I get rid of them? I'm on a Window 7 Home Premium 32 bit machine.

• Updating to Exchange 2013 - any way to do it now?

  Exchange 2013 is out, available for some epople already. Got if from the VLC Center, now trying to get an upgrade path that works for some customers. Problem: There is no upgrade. It is "install on new Server, move mailboxes. This means coexistence with Exchagne 2010 for the time to move the Mailbox. Sadly the only compatible Exchange is Exchange 2010 Sp3 - which is not going to be bout for quite some time. Any way to still do an update? Backup, restore to new Server? Any beta of the SP that is good enough to ONLY move the mailboxes? I do not care about the rest - this really is "install Exchange 2013, move mailboxes, UNINSTALL 2010". I am quite - ah - unhappy that at the end the only one who will be able to intall 2013 are new companies right now.

• Mac failing (failed?) hard drive - is all hope lost?

  It's a 500 GB Seagate laptop hard drive that came with my Macbook Pro. Apple partition format. Already replaced and now have it external, connected via SATA/USB adapter. Trying to get just a few files that I worked on while out of town when it crashed (and thus did not have my time machine backup drive). Drive will not mount, but OS X Disk Utility detects it and can read the capacity, model number, and even the name of the partition, which leads me to believe all hope may not be lost. Failed attempts so far: Disk Utility verify+repair says drive cannot be repaired and that I should back up immediately (lovely) Disk Warrior says it cannot rebuild the directory due to hardware failure Data Rescue quick & deep scans immediately failed PhotoRec says "error reading sector" for every sector (at least for the few minutes I let it run before closing it to explore other options) What else can I try here? Again, I'm just looking for a few, small files (python scripts to be specific) - not a full recovery.

  On a friends laptop following some viruses infestations there is a problem in starting the Windows firewall. The error is: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified When attempting to turn on automatic updates in the security centre, the message is: We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automtic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK. All the options under "Automatic Updates" are greyed out. I've tried the suggestions below and many others: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sharedaccess.htm http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/892199 http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm I can't do a repair install because the installer doesn't detect existing versions. Before answering: sudo rm -rf /whateverthetimemachineis does not work Disabling the ACL permissions first with sudo fsaclctl -p /whatever -d does not work, sudo: fsaclctl: command not found Use the delete all backup feature in Time Machine... this is slow as hell, would take days. Need a command line solution. No I don't want to reformat the drive, I have other content on it, and no don't say I should have separated on two partition or two drives, I did it this say since partitions cannot be dynamically changed, and two drives is annoying since, whats the point of having a big drive?... plus has no relation to the issue at hand. Already googlied for hours and read everything on Super User, nothing working. and all solutions are the first 4. Any clues?

• How do I install win 7 to dual boot with xp which is already installed on my new computer?

  I am building a new computer and have already installed XP Pro on drive 1 partition 1. Drive 1 is a 500 gig SATA with 4 partitions (1 = 50 gig, 2 = 50 gig, 3 =200 gig, 4 = 200 gig). Drive 2 is a 160 gig SATA with 2 patitions (1 = 60 Gig, 2 = 100 gig). I would like to install win 7 on drive 2, partition 1 to dual boot with xp on drive 1, partition 1. • Windows 7 Line In Delay Issue [closed]

  Not sure if this question should be posted on a different stack exchange site, so if you find that it should not be posted here, please move it. Either way, if you know the solution, please advise. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit on my Dell Latitude 2100 netbook and I'm having an issue with the line in device/driver/functionality. The device & driver are stock: Driver Date: 7/13/2009 Driver Version: 6.1.7600.16385 I'm almost sure that the manufacturer of the sound card is RealTek. The problem is that there is a delay (when monitoring input) between the source and the speakers. My setup is bass guitar running through a 12' long instrument cable (1/4") with a 1/4" female to 1/8" male adapter into the line in port on the computer. Then the 15' long headphones/line out cable goes into a standard set of powered speakers. How do I get rid of this delay? Thanks for any help.

• How to track my kid's Multi-Browser website history

  My kid is 14, homeschooled and capable computer user. All of her school work is done online; the computer literacy course even uses 3 different browsers, Chrome, IE, and Firefox. I have 2 laptops, running Win7 (one is Pro, the other Home). Is there a way to get all of her browser history in one place? I have to account for 60 minutes of class time per subject per day, but trying to do this across all 3 is getting too complicated. Thanks! PS. My kid and I talk about internet safety and usage regularly and she knows that I monitor where she goes and how long she is there. Secrecy is not an issue.

• Cannot add Windows 7 client to SBS 2008

  I have just installed SBS 2008 R2 Standard on VMware Workstation 9 along with Windows 7 Pro N. Both are activated and running fine. I have followed the steps to configure SBS 2008 and am now at the point where I'm to add a computer to the domain. Here is where the problem begins. I have gone through the steps of using the webinterface. On the client I downloaded Launcher.exe. I then run it and get the error "Check computer requirements - Failed" (translated from swedish): "This computer doesn't reach the requirements for connecting to the network." "The computer doesn't reach the maximum requirements for the operating system with regards to connect to the network" The provided link for More information only leads to a general supportpage and doesn't handle this specific error. I have also checked the time settings and they are correct. Any clue as to what this problem could be?

• Unable to deactivate windows xp by modifying the license in the registry

  I need to deactivate windows xp so I can set it up with a new license. Every tutorial I've visited follow the same steps. (Example http://www.ehow.com/how_6665848_deactivate-windows-xp-pro.html) The tutorials state that the 00BE timer file located in the registry needs to be modified. It is found by going to the registry and navigating through "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE," "Software," "Microsoft," "WindowsNT," "CurrentVersion" and "WPAEvents." After the file is modified Windows should be deactivated. However it never does. The value changes but when I run the command to add a new license key it states "windows is already activated". I've done this before on other machines at it worked fine. I can't find any other methods to change the license in XP. Has anyone ever had this issue or knows of another way of deactivating windows?
