• Setting the Hostname in IIS Bindings Breaks Website

  I just got a Windows Server 2008 VPS and I'm having trouble getting IIS7 setup. I created a new website in IIS with the path, ip address, and hostname (like 'www.nameofsite.com') and click OK. When I browse to the site it pulls up "http://www.nameofsite.com" in the browser and... nothing... IE cannot display this webpage. If I blank out the hostname in the bindings and click [Browse] it works fine (it takes me to http://10.10.2.92 - the computer's ip). So entering the hostname breaks the website. Any ideas on what I'm missing? Services I might not have running or roles I'm missing? No server roles were initially installed on the VPS so I installed IIS, DHCP, DNS, and Application Server... overkill, but I wasn't sure what to install.

• Good way to find duplicate files?

  Hello I don't know enough about VB.Net (2008, Express Edition) yet, so I wanted to ask if there were a better way to find files with different names but the same contents, ie. duplicates. In the following code, I use GetFiles() to retrieve all the files in a given directory, and for each file, use MD5 to hash its contents, check if this value already lives in a dictionary: If yes, it's a duplicate and I'll delete it; If not, I add this filename/hashvalue into the dictionary for later: 'Get all files from directory Dim currfile As String For Each currfile In Directory.GetFiles("C:\MyFiles\", "File.*") 'Check if hashing already found as value, ie. duplicate If StoreItem.ContainsValue(ReadFileMD5(currfile)) Then 'Delete duplicate 'This hashing not yet found in dictionary -> add it Else StoreItem.Add(currfile, ReadFileMD5(currfile)) End If Next Is this a good way to solve the issue of finding duplicates, or is there a better way I should know about?   I have been trying for ages in all sorts of ways (short of ritual incantations and sacrifices) to get Visual Studio Team Edition 2008 to allow me to create Office 2003 solutions, whether those be templates or documents. No matter what I try, I'm always presented with an error which basically says "You've got the wrong version of Office installed. Try installing something compatible". I have the complete installation of Office 2003 Pro installed along with the Office 2003 Primary Interop Assemblies (which I put on after I installed Office) and then VS2008TE as already mentioned. There has to be some reason why this refuses to work, but I'm out of ideas. Help appreciated.

• Setting a Silverlight textbox control's width relatively

  Hello, I tried searching on stackoverflow for an answer to my question but couldn't seem to find anything relevant. Since I'm relatively new to Silverlight, I'm not even sure if this is possible, but I am trying to figure out if it is possible to set a Silverlight textbox control's width value proportionally to it's immediate parent container? It would be nice to avoid hard coding a width value. Say you want to place a textbox control inside a horizontally aligned StackPanel control and have it's width always dynamically adjusted to be 80% of the total width of the StackPanel. Is this possible to do declaratively in your xaml markup, or will I need to resort to some codebehind attached to some event handler to accomplish this? fyi, I am currently using Visual Web Developer Express 2008 to write my silverlight code. thanks in advance, John

• How to make TinyMCE work inside an UpdatePanel?

  I'm trying to do something that many people seem to have been able to do but which I am unable to implement any solution. The TinyMCE control works pretty well in an asp.net form until you enclose it with an UpdatePanel, which then breaks after postback. I have tried some fixes like the RegisterClientScriptBlock method, but am still unsuccessful, I still lose the tinyMCE control after postback. Below is a full test project (VS 2008) provided with a Control outside UpdatePanel and one inside, with a button on each to generate postback. Also in the project I have a EditorTest control which include commented code of some calls I tried, in case it gives anyone any ideas.   I have a solution with several Silverlight Class Libraries and a Silverlight Application in it. I was originally built in VS 2008 with Silverlight 3.0. What changes do I need to make so that it builds using Silverlight 4.0? I already have VS 2010 and the Silverlight 4.0 toolkit installed. When I opened the project it seems to have upgraded to .NET 4.0 in my ASP.NET Web Project but not the Silverlight projects. Pretty sure they are still building against .NET 3.5 and Silverlight 3.0. • Is using the keyword var bad in C# 2.0?

  I read an article about using C# 3 features in C# 2 where you can for instance type var x = 2; and even if the project is a 2.0 project, the Visual Studio 2008 compiler picks it up and generates the same code as it would if you type int x = 2. But what I don't get is, should you not do this in some cases? I always thought that the var keyword didn't arrive until C# 3.. If the compiler generates the same code and I can type C# 3 code and C# 2 code exactly the same, what is the differance really, because the CLI is the same, right? Quote from the link above Behind the scenes, the compiler generate regular .NET 2.0 code. Is there any difference between .NET 2.0 code and .NET 3 code?

• jQuery not replacing text in ReportViewer

  I'm trying to replace text that I got back in the ReportViewer using jQuery. My div, wrapped in the table cell, display "empty" as text - which I plan on replacing with my own formatted text on the client side. I can use jQuery just fine to set a class on the div (which is inside a td element). Example: jQuery('div:contains("empty")').addClass('replacetext'); But for some reason I cannot do this: jQuery('div:contains("empty")').replaceWith('<div>Hello World</div>'); I tried this out on some other elements on the page and jQuery does work... but it seems like this issue is ReportViewer (I'm using 2008) specific.

• Unit Testing, IDataContext and Stored Procedures via Linq

  hey folks, I'm currently using Stephen Walther's approach to unit testing Linq to SQL and the datacontext (http://stephenwalther.com/blog/archive/2008/08/17/asp-net-mvc-tip-33-unit-test-linq-to-sql.aspx) which is working a treat for all things linq. My Dal layer takes in an IDataContext, I use DI (via Unity) to concrete that up as the correct DataContext object and all works well. But - we have a company policy here of writes going via Stored Procs. Has anyone come up with a solution for mocking/faking the data context and still allowing stored procs to effectively be unit tested? I've got no real experience of any of the mocking frameworks (Rhino etc.) so if these are the correct means of doing this, I'd love some pointers on guides for them. Many thanks, Terry

  I imported a website made in visual studio express 2008 to visual studio express 2010. When I run the home page I get the following error: "It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS." When I looked up the meaning of this on Google I read their needed to be a change to the configuration of the virtual directory. Another suggestion was to change the web config files . T Were these suggestions correct? If so how do I emplement them so that I can view these website pages on my local machine.

• What could make GetCursorPos return incorrect coordinates of {0,0} ?

  We are seeing bad behavior in an application when it runs on Server 2008 (not R2). This is a WinForms application, and Control.MousePosition is returning {0,0} no matter where the mouse is on the screen... Control.MousePosition just makes a P/Invoke call to Win32 api GetCursorPos(). There is a control in our library that calls SetWindowsHookEx to hook WH_CALLWNDPROCRET for our entire process. I'm suspicious of this code, but tracing statements show that we're getting in + out of that hook cleanly. What else should I be looking for? Thanks, Dave

  Using SQL server 2008. I have a family tree of animals stored in a table, and want to give some information on how 'genetically diverse' (or not) the offspring is. In SQL how can I produce sensible metrics to show how closely related the parents are? Perhaps some sort of percentage of shared blood, or a number of generations to go back before there is a shared ancestor? I was thinking that if they are interested in purchasing the software I will give them a license key or something, to unlock the application. • Weird IIS7 http redirection behavior

  I have a web server running Windows Server 2008 with IIS7. I have a bunch of websites which are all bound to the same IP address, but with different host header values. Most of the host headers are something like www.sitename.com. I also have a corresponding website entry for each which listens for the host "sitename.com" and does a redirect to "www.sitename.com" within IIS7 (to cater for non-www requests). Now this is all pretty straight forward, but I've noticed the when setting up the Http Redirection, some wierd things happen: Firstly, the "redirect" website entries must be pointed at a different physical directory than the site it's trying to redirect to, otherwise the redirection settings get set for both sites at once. Secondly, sometimes whilst setting up Http Redirection on an individual site, Http Redirection gets set at a server level, and all sites start redirecting to that one URL. How does this happen? Under what circumstances could setting Http Redirection on an individual site affect all sites? This is scary!!!

• Joomla 1.5 Media Manager sets incorrect file permissions when uploading

  Howdy all, I have a Joomla 1.5 installation running on Windows Server 2008, installed via the Web Platform Installer. When uploading images with the media manager (native uploader, not the flash bulk uploader), the files arrive on the server correctly, but are given incorrect permissions. Specifically, the IIS_IUSRS group is not given access to the file. I might be incorrect about what group/user is SUPPOSED to get access to the files, but so far, I've found that unless I give IIS_IUSRS access to the uploaded files, they won't appear on the site or in the media manager (appear as broken images). Once I give IIS_IUSRS permission to the files, they work fine. So far, all the research I've done has led me to linux specific fixes that involve either changing the umask on the server, or directly modifying the Joomla codebase to add an appropriate chmod command to the upload process, but I really don't want to modify Joomla directly. I have to believe there's a setting here somewhere that will do the job, either on the Joomla or Windows side of the equation. Any thoughts? Scott

• Is the redistributable ReportViewer 2010 RC available in other languages?

  I need to deploy the language packs for the ReportViewer 2010 control (the english one is installed and working perfectly). Before, with ReportViewer 2008 and 2005, all the supported laguages were available on the MS downloads site. I can't seem to find them for the RC of 2010 -- are they available anywhere? From MSDN: To use the localized version of the ReportViewer control redistributable that comes with Visual Studio, do the following: 1.Run ReportViewer.exe. 2.Navigate to the folder that contains the language pack you want to use. Language pack folders are located at %PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\BootStrapper\Packages\ReportViewer\. 3.Run ReportViewerLP.exe. Is there a generic language pack for VS 2010 RC that would have the localized report viewers as well?

• Sharepoint Foundation 2010 installation problems

  I'm having problems installing development machine for Sharepoint (Foundation) 2010. This is what I did so far on the same machine: Installed a clean Windows 7 x64 with 4GB of RAM without being part of any domain. Just a simple standalone machine. Enabled IIS related features as described here except IIS6 related ones (two of them) Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Development Edition (DB Engine and Writer being enabled but not SQL Agent) Installed Visual Studio 2010 Premium Started installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 with first extracting files, changing config to enable Windows 7 installation and then installed it as Server Farm (then Complete) to avoid installing SQL Express. Created a separate SPF_CONFIG local user with Logon on as a service right. Opened SPF Management Shell and run New-SPConfigurationDatabase so I am able to use a non-domain username (SPF_CONFIG that I created in the previous step) But all I get is this: The outcome after this error is: Database Sharepoint2010Config is created User SPF_CONFIG is added to SQL Server and attached to this newly created database as dbowner and checking SQL server security logins this user has following rights: dbcreator securityadmin public

• Why can't I attach the debugger?

  I'm using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and trying to debug a website created in ASP Classic. I have read numerous tutorials, however nothing seems to be working (PEBKAC?). I have enabled server-side debugging in IIS and am attaching the debugger to dllhost.exe. When I open my page in Google Chrome, set breakpoints and set VS to debug, nothing happens. I don't get any errors so I'm not sure what else to post. Any ideas? Thank you. :)

  With .NET, I have "Thursday, April 10, 2008 1:30:00 PM" and I want "dddd, dd MMMM, yyyy h:m:s t", "6:09:01 PM" and want ""hh:mm:ss tt", "Fri 29 Aug" and want "ddd d MMM", and so on. It seems I should be able to use DateTimeFormatInfo in some way. I figured I can format the date with each pattern returned by GetAllDateTimePatterns, and when the original date string and the formated date string match then I have the format. Yet, I want to generate custom formats, not the standard formats. I want the format string. I do not want the date. I have both the DateTime value and the formatted string value for the date. I need <formatString> as in ToString(<formatString>).

• Fluent NHib causing visual studio 2010 hanging at runtime

  Just installed and migrated a 2008 solution on Vista ultimate 64 and .net 4.0. Everything builds and tests run surprisingly well but I got the hang description below while trying to run the app under SQLite. It turns out that the hang has got something to do when the call is made for FNH to build the session factory during a run, the only feedback I get is that the database wasn't configure properly without any inner exception. The strange part is that the exact code works perfectly under tests. Any clues? Description: A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows. • Tomcat on Windows x64 using 32-bit JDK

  Hoping someone can help. The rub: I can't get Tomcat 5.5 to start as a windows service on 64-bit windows using a 32-bit JDK. the details: I've been running Tomcat 5.5 on Windows Server 2008 (x64) as a service for some time using a 64-bit JDK. I'm being forced to install a 32-bit JDK on this 64-bit machine so I can make use of the Java JAI libraries (no 64-bit JAI version). I have to run Tomcat using this 32-bit JDK. I can run Tomcat using the 32-bit JDK if I start it using /bin/startup.bat Problem is, it will not start as a windows service. I'm using the Tomcat bundled procrun executables. Has anyone had success starting Tomcat as a service using a 32-bit JDK on a 64-bit machine? Thanks for your expertise.

In Ubuntu it crashed with std::bad_cast exception. In MSVC++ 2008 it just prints 0. I know that I could use file.read to load file, but I want to use iterator and operator>> to load parts of the file. Is that possible? Why the code above doesn't work?

  Hi All, I want to have an abstract base class for some of my custom UserControl's. The reason is obvious: they share some common properties and methods (a basic implementation of some elements of an interface actually), and I want to implement them only once. I have done this by defining my abstract base class: public abstract class ViewBase : UserControl, ISomeInterface Then I went to implement one of my views, as usual, with the designer: public partial class SpecialView : UserControl //all OK Up to here all is fine. Now I replace the derivation of my SpecialView class with the abstract base class: public partial class SpecialView : ViewBase //disrupts the designer Now, the designer in Visual Studio 2008 won't work anymore, stating: The designer must create an instance of type 'ViewBase' but it cannot because the type is declared as abstract. How can I circumvent this? I just do not want to have the same code copied for all those views. Info: there is a question question with virtual methods, instead of abstract classes, but there is no suitable solution for me.
