• PDB file from different versions of Visual Studio

  I have an old DLL file which was built with VC++ 6. Now I need to investigate the dump file but I don't have its PDB available. The stacktrace reported by WinDbg is also inaccurate. Is it possible to rebuild the project with later versions of Visual Studio i.e. 2003, 2005, 2008, have the PDB generated, and use this to map addresses to symbols in the old DLL? Is there something like VC 6.0 compatible mode for building project? Obtaining VC++ 6 is one option, but it looks like VS6.0 has already vanished from MSDN subscriber download page :( Thanks!

• Visual Studio: Design a UserControl class that derives from an abstract base class

  Hi All, I want to have an abstract base class for some of my custom UserControl's. The reason is obvious: they share some common properties and methods (a basic implementation of some elements of an interface actually), and I want to implement them only once. I have done this by defining my abstract base class: public abstract class ViewBase : UserControl, ISomeInterface Then I went to implement one of my views, as usual, with the designer: public partial class SpecialView : UserControl //all OK Up to here all is fine. Now I replace the derivation of my SpecialView class with the abstract base class: public partial class SpecialView : ViewBase //disrupts the designer Now, the designer in Visual Studio 2008 won't work anymore, stating: The designer must create an instance of type 'ViewBase' but it cannot because the type is declared as abstract. How can I circumvent this? I just do not want to have the same code copied for all those views. Info: there is a question question with virtual methods, instead of abstract classes, but there is no suitable solution for me.

• MS Environment: How to force link a static library to another using .vsprops, if possible?

  Environment: VS 2008 in Windows. Problem: A static library, say first.lib is not linked to, say second.lib, if first.lib is specified in .vsprops file and none of its functions is referenced in the second.lib. If, however, first.lib is removed from the .vsprops file and placed instead in the appropriate project options dialog(1), it is linked, even if its functions remain unreferenced. (1) Project - Properties - Configuration Properties - Linker - Input. Our solution uses .vsprops exclusively and to somehow be able to specify first.lib in such a file with additional tweaking of some settings would be considered a more elegant solution. Using a dummy function to pull in unused functions of first.lib is not an option. Thanks in advance.

  I am using Message Broker with Sql server 2008, and designing an External Activator service to consume messages from my target queue. My Problem: Cant cast the returned message body from the SqlDataReader object: "WAITFOR (RECEIVE TOP(1) conversation_handle, message_type_name, message_body FROM [{1}]), TIMEOUT {2}" operation, I cant cast the binary data to XML in C# SqlBinary MessageBody = reader.GetSqlBinary(2); MemoryStream memstream = new MemoryStream(); XmlDocument xmlDoc = new XmlDocument(); memstream.Write(MessageBody.Value, 0, MessageBody.Length); memstream.Position= 0; //below line Fails With Error:{"Data at the root level is invalid. So I have a table for: Person Book The association between Person and Book (joint table for MxN) I want to fetch the Persons that are similar to a Person1 based on the favorite Books overlaping. That is: The more books they have in common, the more they are similar. I don't have to use only SQL to solve this problem. I could use programming also. I'm using SQL Server 2008 and C#. • Retrieving a filtered list of stored procedures using t-sql

  I'm trying to get a list of stored procedures in t-sql. I am using the line: exec sys.sp_stored_procedures; I would like to filter the results back though, so I only get user created stored procedures. I would like to filter out sp_*, dt_*, fn_*, xp_* and everything else that is a system stored procedure and no interest to me. How can I manipulate the result set returned? Using Sql Server 2008 express. Solved! Here is what I used: SELECT name FROM sys.procedures WHERE [type] = 'P' AND name NOT LIKE 'sp_%' AND name NOT LIKE 'dt_%' ORDER BY name ASC;

• Update webreference gives troubles with different versions of dll

  In my application, I use some dll, let's say library.dll, version 1.0 In my webservice, I also use library.dll, but version 2.0 When I do an update of the webreference, the classes inside of the dll are also generated in the webreference. And this gives troubles because in my application, the classes that are defined in the dll now are also available in the reference and there is a mismatch. How can I solve this? I need to be able to tell the webservice to ignore the dll-code when updating the webreference in the one or the other way. I use Visual Studio 2008.

• Visual Artifacts in Visual Studio 2010

  I'm using VS 2010 on Windows Server 2003, running on a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. VS 2010 runs fine, except for persistent and random screen re-drawing issues. Samples of these are here. These artifacts occur as the mouse moves over items that highlight on a mouse-over event, while scrolling, and when switching tabs. VS 2008 has non of these issues, so I assume that it is related to VS 2010's use of WPF. Could it be that my video card or driver is not up to the task of rendering WPF? Some other WPF applications (not Silverlight) also have some of these screen repainting problems. I have tried a variety of settings in System Properties--Advanced--Performance Options--Visual Effects, and in the related "Advanced" tab, Processor Scheduling is adjusted for best performance of programs. • Add api key to every request in ActiveResource

  I have 2 RESTful Rails apps I'm trying to make talk to each other. Both are written in Rails 3 (beta3 at the moment). The requests to the service will require the use an api key which is just a param that needs to be on every request. I can't seem to find any information on how to do this. You define the url the resource connects to via the site= method. There should be an equivalent query_params= method or similar. There is one good blog post I found related to this and it's from October 2008, so not exactly useful for Rails 3.

• BDE, Delphi, ODBC, SQL Native Client & Dead lock

  Hi. We have some Delphi code that uses the BDE to Access SQL Server 2008 through the SQL Server Native Client ODBC driver (2005 version). Our issue is that we're experiencing some deadlock issues in a loop doing inserts to multiple tables. The whole loop is done within a [TDatabase].StartTransaction. Looking at the SQL Server Profiler we clearly see that at one point during the loop the SPID (Session ID?) change, and then we naturally end up with a deadlock. (Both SPID doing inserts to the same table) It seems like the BDE at some point does a second connection to the DB... (Although I would love to skip the BDE, it's currently not possible. ) Anyone with experiences to share?

• How do i serve shortcuts/.lnk from web servers?

  without using a database i wanted a file to point to the newest revision of a file. Someone suggested using a shortcut. Knowing i can rewrite file.ext to file.ext.lnk i thought it was a great idea. Then i tried it, my server (VS 2010rc) serves the shortcut rather then the file. Not what i wanted... How do i serve the file the shortcut is pointing to? NOTE: I am planing to use windows 2008 as my server so a solution should work on that as well. The OS i am running is windows 7.

  As expected, the compiler (VisualStudio 2008) will give a warning warning C4715: 'doSomethingWith' : not all control paths return a value when compiling the following code: int doSomethingWith(int value) { int returnValue = 3; bool condition = false; if(condition) // returnValue += value; // DOH return returnValue; } int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { int foo = 10; int result = doSomethingWith(foo); return 0; } But the program runs just fine. The return value of function doSomethingWith() is 0. Is is just undefined behavior, or is there a certain rule how the result value is created/computed at runtime. What happens with non-POD datatypes as return value?

  .NET newbie alert Using Visual C# 2008 Express Edition I have accidentally created a click event for a button. I then deleted the automatically-created method code, which resulted in an error saying that the function, which had now been referenced in the form loading code, could no longer be found. Deleting the following line from the Form1.Designer.cs file's InitializeComponent() function... this.btnCopy.Click += new System.EventHandler(this.btnCopy_Click); ... seems to do the trick, however, it makes me feel very dirty because of the following warning at the beginning of the #region: /// Required method for Designer support - do not modify /// the contents of this method with the code editor. I haven't been able to find a way to do this using the form designer, which I assume is the means implied by this warning. What is the correct way to do this?

• ExpectedException on TestMethod Visual Studio 2010

  Today I upgraded my solution with all the underlying projects from VS2008 to VS2010. Everything went well except for my unit tests. First of all only the web projects had as target framework .NET 4. All the other projects still had .NET 3.5. I changed them all to .NET 4. Now when I debug my unit tests it breaks on every exception. In 2008 it just wouldn't pass and tell me that an exception occurred. Even when I have the ExpectedException attribute defined it stops debugging on every exception. And example of one of my tests: [TestMethod] [ExpectedException(typeof(EntityDoesNotExistException))] public void ConstructorTest() { AddressType type = new AddressType(int.MaxValue); } The EntityDoesNotExistException is a custom exception and inherits Exception.

I'm using Visual studio 2008 with C# and SharpSVN dll (for Subversion 1.6) I wish to commit to multiple different folders in my repository, but without having to checkout the entire repository. I tried using the method: SVNClient.Commit (ICollection coll, CommitArgs ca); Where eg coll [0] = "c:\svnCheckoutDir\dirLic001\sect\file_ext.ini" and coll [1] = "c:\svnCheckoutDir\dirLic121\sect\file_ext.ini" but I get the error message: "c:\svnCheckoutDir" is not a working copy. when I download the entire repository, I have no problems. but when I do a checkout of the folders you just want to modify the process does not work. • JNI_CreateJavaVM: Buffer overrun if I throw an exception in case of failure

  Hi, In a C++ project, I use the JNI invocation API to launch a JVM. I've done a little wrapper arount the JVM so I can use all the needed parts in a OO fashion. So far that works great. Now, if the JVM does not start (JNI_CreateJavaVM returns a value < 0) I'd like to raise an exception within my C++ code.But if I throw an exception after JNI_CreateJavaVM, I get a buffer overrun. If I raise the exception without the JNI_CreateJavaVM call, it works as expected. Does anyone have a clue on what the issue could be here? Or how to debug this? Environment: Windows, Visual Studio 2008 JDK: jrockit27.6jdk16005, but happens with SUN stock one as well Cheers Dominik

• Current state of client-side XSLT

  Last I heard, Blizzard was one of the few companies to put client-side XSLT into practice (2008). Is this still the case in 2011, or are more people now exploring this technique in production?  It seems that modern browsers (IE9, FF4, Chrome) and client processing power are primed to exploit this standard for tangible savings in server CPU power and bandwidth on large scale properties. Am I missing something? The negative aspects I'm aware of include * additional rendering time * additional assets required on uncached page load * additional layer of complexity * noticably less developer experience than server-side template techniques The benefits I perceive include * distributed template composition (offloaded on the client) * caching of common template fragments offloaded on the client * logical separation of document structure and data * well-documented web standard supported by all modern browsers Finally, although I know it's impossible to predict the future, I am curious to know opinions on whether or not client-side XSLT's day will come. It's critical to ensure that no user has access to another user's data. What are some approaches for implementing security at the database level and/or in the application architecture to to accomplish this? For example (and this is totally made up - I'm not suggesting it's a good or bad approach) including a userID column in all data tables might be an approach.   We have an ASP.Net MVC 1.0 solution developed using Visual Studio 2008 and .net Framework 3.5SP1. We would now like to upgrade Visual Studio to 2010. If we just open the solution in VS 2010 and do not change the framework version, can we just continue to develop as before? If we open the solution in VS 2010 and change the framework version to 4.0, will we automatically start using ASP.Net MVC 2.0, or will it continue to use ASP.Net MVC 1.0? • Hudson plugins for visual svn

  Problem I have a hudson build server set up on a windows server 2008. We want to be able to commit to a repository and after the commit succeeds we want visual svn to send a message or a trigger to the hudson build server to let it know it needs to execute a build. We want it to build only when someone does a commit so we don't want to poll svn constantly because its not necessary. Question Is there a plugin for visual svn that can automatically send a message to hudson or is there a better way of doing this without using wget? I've tried using wget on the hudson build url in the post commit hook of visual svn but I realized that the post commit hooks can only be set for the entire repository and not individual projects in visual svn, so if we made a small change to a different project in the repository its going to tell hudson it needs to build even though no changes have occurred in the project that is linked with hudosn...

  Hello, C# 2008 I am not sure how much work there is to inheriting from the web client class. Currently I am using it in my project. And I can't change to anything else. The customer would like to have a timeout after a certain period of time. The web client doesn't have this. So rather than re-invent the wheel, I am thinking of inheriting from the web client and adding this property. Do you think this is a suitable solution? Could it mean more work just to add this. • C# Windows Forms Print Dialog box click OK twice to respond

  I'm using Visual Studio 2008, .net Framework 3.5 for a Windows forms client-server app that I'm working on. There is a weird bug when I run the program and try to print. The print dialog box opens, but I have to click the OK button twice for it to work. After the second click it works fine, no errors. When I put a breakpoint on: if (result == DialogResult.OK) , the breakpoint doesn't trigger until the second click. Here is the code: private void tbPrint_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { try { printDialog1.Document = pDoc; DialogResult result = printDialog1.ShowDialog(); if (result == DialogResult.OK) { pDoc.PrinterSettings.PrinterName = printDialog1.PrinterSettings.PrinterName; pDoc.Print(); } ... This is driving me crazy, and I can't see anything else that would interfere with it.
