• What is the best way to maintain an entity's original properties when they are not included in MVC binding from edit page?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC view for editing a model object. The edit page includes most of the properties of my object but not all of them -- specifically it does not include CreatedOn and CreatedBy fields since those are set upon creation (in my service layer) and shouldn't change in the future. Unless I include these properties as hidden fields they will not be picked up during Binding and are unavailable when I save the modified object in my EF 4 DB Context. In actuality, upon save the original values would be overwritten by nulls (or some type-specific default). I don't want to drop these in as hidden fields because it is a waste of bytes and I don't want those values exposed to potential manipulation. Is there a "first class" way to handle this situation? Is it possible to specify a EF Model property is to be ignored unless explicitly set?

• How can I embed images within my application and use them in HTML control?

  Is there any way I can embed the images within my exe (as resource?) and use it in generated HTML ? Here are the requirements: A. I want to show dynamic HTML content (e.g. using webBrowser control, VS 2008, VB .Net, winForm desktop application) B. I want to generate the HTML on-the-fly using XML and XSL (file1.xml or file2.xml transformed by my.xsl) C. The HTML may contain IMG tags (file1.gif and or file2.gif according to the xml+xsl transformation) and here comes the complicated one: D. All these files (file1.xml, file2.xml, my.xsl, file1.gif, file2.gif) should be embedded in one exe file. I guess the XML and XSL can be embedded resources, and I can read them as stream, but what ways do I have to reference the image within the HTML ? <IMG src="???" /> I do not want to use absolute path and external files. If the image files are resources, can I use relative path? Relative to what? (I can use BASE tag, and then what?) Can I use stream as in email messages? If so, where can I find the format I need to use? http://www.websiteoptimization.com/speed/tweak/inline-images/ are browser dependent. What is the browser used by webBrowser control? IE? what version? Does it matter if I use GIF or JPG or BMP (or any other image format) for the images? Does it matter if I use mshtml library and not the regular webBrowser control?   When I do this: Cat x = Session.Load<Cat>(123); x.Name = "fritz"; Session.Flush(); NHibernate detects the change and UPDATEs the DB. But, when I do this: Cat x = new Cat(); Session.Save(x); x.Name = "fritz"; Session.Flush(); I get NULL for name, because that's what was there when I called Session.Save(). Why doesn't NHibernate detect the changes - or better yet, take the values for the INSERT statement at the time of Flush()?

  I'm trying to revert "special price" after the "special price to date" passed to null. • How to name uploaded files in php to prevent them from being overwritten?

  I'm trying to add user submitted articles to my website, (only for admins). With each article comes an option to upload up to 3 images. My database is set up like this Articles id user_id title body date_added last_edited Photos id (auto_increment) article_id First I save the article in the database, then I upload the photo (temporarily) then I create a new photo record in the database saving the article_id. Then I rename the uploaded photo to be the same as the primary key of the photo record, and to be a png. $filename = $photo->id . '.png'; I figured this would be a good way to prevent files form being overwritten. This seems flawed to me. Any suggestions on how I should save my records and photos? Thanks

• Java data structure to use with Hibernate to store unknown number of parameters?

  Following problem: I want to render a news stream of short messages based on localized texts. In various places of these messages I have to insert parameters to "customize" them. I guess you know what I mean ;) My question probably falls into the "Which is the best style to do it?" category: How would you store these parameters (they may be Strings and Numbers that need to be formatted according to Locale) in the database? I'm using Hibernate to do the ORM and I can think of the following solutions: build a combined String and save it as such (ugly and hard to maintain I think) do some kind of fancy normalization and and make every parameter a single row on the database (clean I guess, but a performance nightmare) Put the params into an Array, Map or other Java data structure and save it in binary format (probably causes a lot of overhead size-wise) I tend towards option #3 but I'm afraid that it might be to costly in terms of size in the database. What do you think?

• Is it possible to tie a subscription to a iTunes account with in-app purhcase?

  We're trying to implement a subscription service with in-app purchase in our app. The problem is our service does not require a user account for the past year of service. Users simply use this service with advertisements shown. We want to give them a subscription where they can buy for say, 3 months to have the advertisement removed. How can this be done? We'll have to make it a consumable because it is a subscription. But we wouldn't know when the subscription end. We can't save the state locally because the user might reinstall the app We can't save the state on the server and tie it to their device because sometimes the user changes device We don't have a user account to tie the subscription to and we don't want to introduce a user account system which spoils the experience. Is there some way of associating the purchase with their iTunes account? So that it is carried with them when they reinstall or changes device?

• javascript watching for variable change via a timer

  I have a slide show where every 10 seconds the next image loads. Once an image loads, it waits 10 seconds (setTimeout) and then calls a function which fades it out, then calls the function again to fade in the next image. It repeats indefinitely. This works. However, at times, I'm going to want to over-ride this "function1 call - pause - function2 call - function1 call" loop outside of this function (for instance, I may click on a slide # and want to jump directly to that slide and cancel the current pause). One solution seems to be to set up a variable, allow other events to change that variable and then in my original function chain, check for any changes before continuing the loop. I have this set up: var ping = 500; var pausetime = 10000; for(i=0; i<=pausetime; i=i+ping){ setTimeout(function(){ console.log(gocheckthevariable()); console.log(i); pseudoIf('the variable is true AND the timer is done then...do the next thing') },i) } The idea is that I'd like to pause for 10 seconds. During this pause, every half second I'll check to see if this should be stopped. The above will write out to the console the following every half second: true 10000 true 10000 true 10000 etc... But what I want/need is this: true 0 true 500 true 1000 etc... The basic problem is that the for loop executes before each of the set timeouts. While I can check the value of the variable every half second, I can't match that against the current loop index. I'm sure this is a common issue, but I'm at a loss what I should actually be searching for.

• Rendering maps from raw SVG data in Java

  In an application of mine I have to display locations and great circle paths in a map which is rendered to PNG and then displayed on the web. For this I simply use a world map (NASA's Blue Marbel in fact) scaled to various "zoom levels" as base image and only display the a part of it matching the final image size and fitting all items to be displayed. Straight forward so far. Now I came across Wikipedia's awesome blank SVG maps which contain all the country codes for easy reference and I was wondering whether it was possible to use those to have more customized colors and to highliht countries etc. So I did a bit of googling and was looking for Java libraries which would enable me to load the blank SVG map to memory allows for easy reference/selection of certain paths do manipulations of coloring, stroke widths etc render to a buffered image as the background for the great-circle paths/nodes What I came across quite often was Batik, but it looks like a really heavy framework and I'm not quite sure whether it is what I'm looking for. I have recently played around with Raphaël a bit and I like the way it handles working with vector graphics in code. If the Java framework for my purpose would feature a similar interface, that would be a nice-to-have. Any recommendations what toolset would be approriate for my purposes?

What I'm trying to figure out is how to validate that a Card can only belong to a single Expansion. I want the following to be invalid: some_cards = FooCard.all( :limit => 25 ) first_expansion = Expansion.new second_expansion = Expansion.new first_expansion.cards = some_cards second_expansion.cards = some_cards first_expansion.save # Valid second_expansion.save # **Should be invalid** However, GameSets should allow this behavior: other_cards = FooCard.all( :limit => 10 ) first_set = GameSet.new second_set = GameSet.new first_set.cards = other_cards # Valid second_set.cards = other_cards # Also valid I'm guessing that a validates_uniqueness_of call is needed somewhere, but I'm not sure where to put it.   Hello, I need to find a very compact, cross-platform web server that can run Lua scripts, ie. either a regular web server like Mongoose that will forward queries to a Lua program in eg. FastCGI, or a web server itself written in Lua which will save the need to provide a separate web server. • Storing Instances of Classes in Flex Shared Objects

  Is it possible to store instances of a class in a cookie or in shared objects. Basically in my application I have an object "Diagram" that the user can create. If they hit save, I want to store the current instance as a cookie and allows them to reload it later. Alternatively, I could see about getting them to store the saved version on the hard disk. But even then, all I want to save and retreive is my actionscript object. Is this possible? I've tried storing the object to SharedObject.data.diag, but when I try to retrieve the object from the cookie doing SharedObject.data.diag as Diag returns null.

• Relatively simple task: How do I pass back the selected item from one activity to another?

  I have two activities: one displays an image and a button, the other displays a photo gallery. • Not allowing characters after Space. Mysql Insert With PHP

  Ok so I think this is easy but I dont know (I'm a novice to PHP and MySQL). I have a select that is getting data from a table in the database. I am simply taking whatever options the user selects and putting it into a separate table with a php mysql insert statement. But I am having a problem. When I hit submit, everything is submitted properly except for any select options that have spaces don't submit after the first space. For example if the option was COMPUTER REPAIR, all that would get sent is COMPUTER. I will post code if needed, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!   hello i have some problem with displaying a sprite in a div that is in a li-class. so the structure is: <li id="aa"> <div><a href="#">one</a></div> </li> and the css: li{ width: 120px; height: 18px; margin-top: 5px; } li div{ width: 20px; height: 10px; background-image:url(../images/sprite.png) background-repeat: no-repeat; margin-left: 0px; font-weight:bolder; border: 1px solid #fff; } when i use this i can see the sprite even outside the div. so i tried adding to li background-image: none; that makes the image in the div not visible too. so if there is someone who know about that i really would appreciate. thanks alot.

How can I force the CLR to wait until the API return the convenient result.   If you assign an invalid date (like December 39th) to a datetime column ActiveRecord returns a "can't be blank" error when is should probably return an error like "Not a valid date" My question. Consider that i have an excel workbook and an access table not necessarily having a similar structure (i.e. They may not have same number of columns) When i open the workbook the rows in the excel sheet get populated by the rows in access table (copied from the access table into the excel sheet's particular range of cells specified using macros). Then i modify certain cells in the excel sheet. I also have a button called "Save" in the excel sheet. When pressed, this will execute a macro. My question how can i update the access table to reflect the changes in the excel sheet when the save button is clicked...? Thanks for your time and suggestions...!

  Hi! I'm using the PHPExcel plugin for Symfony 1.4 (sfPHPExcelPlugin) on Ubuntu (using PHP 5.10), with this code for saving the file that I am writing: // Save Excel 2007 file echo date('H:i:s') . " Write to Excel2007 format\n"; $objWriter = PHPExcel_IOFactory::createWriter($objPHPExcel, 'Excel2007'); $objWriter->save(str_replace('.php', '.xlsx', __FILE__)); // Echo done echo date('H:i:s') . " Done writing file.\r\n"; I am sure that the execution is reaching this part of the code, because the echo messages are shown but I am not downloading the Excel file! Could it be because I am trying it in Linux, not in Windows? Thank you!

• build a chrome extension in order to upload images (from clipboard)

  I wanted to write a simple chrome extension in order to substitute the following sequence of steps which i have to do very often for university: make screenshot of something edit screenshot in Paint save unnamend.png to harddrive upload unnamed.png to imageshack.us/pic-upload.de or any other website share link of image with others. I don't care which image upload service to use, i just want automize this use-case in order to save time (I already red and did a getting-started chrome extension and checked out their API, but that's it, this page: http://farter.users.sourceforge.net/blog/2010/11/20/accessing-operating-system-clipboard-in-chromium-chrome-extensions/ seemed useful, but i couldn't make it overwrite my systems clipboard - moreover i can't find a tutorial which helps me further).
