• Is it possible to add files to the "Wordpress Media Library" using the command line?

  Wordpress has it's own "Media Library" which is used when you upload images and other media for use in blog posts and pages. The advantage of the media library is that it automatically produces thumbnails of the images and the web interface gives you extra info such as who uploaded the image, which articles use the image, etc. My question is, does anyone have any tips on interacting with the media library via the command line instead of using the Wordpress web interface? For example, any ideas on how to add a image to the media library from the command line? If I copy files to the media library directory (usually .../wp-content/uploads/YYYY/MM/) from the command line they do not show up in the Wordpress dashboard - I guess because there needs to be an associated database entry for the media to be registered with Wordpress.

  Why is dynamic endpoint binding needed? Sometimes a BPEL process instance has to determine at run-time which implementation of a web service interface is to be called. We’ll show you how to achieve that using dynamic endpoint binding. Let’s imagine the following scenario: we’re running a car rental agency called RYLC (Rent Your Legacy Car) which operates different locations. The process of renting a car is basically identical for all locations except for the determination which cars are currently available. This is depicted in the following diagram: There are three different implementations of the GetAvailableCars service. But how can we achieve calling them dynamically at run-time using Oracle SOA Suite? • How can I justify software testing to management?

  I work for a small company (less than 200 employees) whose software group only makes up a small part of our staff (4 employees, occasionally with a few contractors). The four of us have been making strides in transitioning to better practices, and one of the next logical steps is to improve our testing. As anyone who has done any meaningful tests knows, testing takes a lot of time - and at my company, it takes too much time to justify to management, so we generally do what little we do on the sly. I don't think this is serving us well, as we keep coming up against otherwise avoidable problems when we ship under-tested software. I would like to be able to come to management with a justification for hiring a dedicated software test engineer (someone who can both write automated tests and perform manual ones). Are there any good published studies that show the benefits of adding such a position to a small company? Where can I find information about costs associated with the position? I plan on doing a little number crunching on our own history, but having some external sources to point to would help bolster my case.

• Why is my HDD not showing up?

  I'm on Windows 7, got a new 2 TiB NON-external hard disk. When I plug it in it doesn't show up on the Disk Management list in the Computer Management window (that you get by right-clicking My Computer and selecting "Manage"). At first I thought it was broken, but I could see it using a friend's computer. I've run a full disk scan using the official tool from Western Digital, no problems. I've formatted it and partitioned it at another friends place, I've even encrypted the disk fully without any problems, then mounted it and placed a text file on it with the word "hello" inside and saved the file. When I boot my own computer the disk shows up in BIOS. So the disk is not broken. I've tried changing what SATA slot on the motherboard I stick it in. Makes no difference. After all this: Why won't my Windows 7 discover the disk???

• Expiry time in notify-send notifications

  On my HP computer running Ubuntu 12.04, the brightness and volume increments were much higher than I wanted. On top of that, the notification for the volume was just plain wrong (0% sound did not correspond to 0 on the progress bar). So I decided to override these options with my own commands. I used CompizConfig Settings Manager to add custom commands to the brightness and volume keys (this couldn't be done in the regular settings because these keys were handled by the BIOS, unlike normal function keys). I used xbacklight to control the brightness and amixer to control the volume. The problem is that the nice notify-send notifications don't show up when I manually set the brightness/volume, so now I have to do that myself too. However, there are two problems with notify-send: The expire time option doesn't work You have to wait until a notification is finished before the next one comes up Before I overrided the brightness/volume keys, the system was able to send notifications without these two restrictions. Notifications disappeared within 3 seconds (instead of the default 10), and if I double tapped the volume or brightness button, the progress bar would immediately change to the new brightness (instead of showing the old progress bar for 10 seconds and then showing the new one). Since the system was able to do it, I was wondering how I can achieve the same type of notifications?

• What could cause a lag in typing with WinXP?

  I'm working on a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop that has a mysterious lag in typing. You enter keystrokes and it takes a while to show up on the screen. WinXP Pro was freshly installed and the behavior is still here. Here is the weird part... I've tested the computer with the full Dell diagnostic suite, Prime95 (using UBCD4Win), and Memtest86. Everything checks out as fine. If I run a LiveCD such as UBCD4Win or Ubuntu (9.04?) then there is no typing issue. This is causing me lots of aggravation. Thoughts?

• Mac .flac player that organizes folder structure? Can Songbird write to a ntfs drive?

  I have a bunch of music in .flac format on my pc. I would like to put that music on an external drive which I can access from both my Mac and PC at work. I have the drive formatted in NTFS using MacFUSE and NTFS-3G drivers. Through Finder I write to the drive fine. If I go to Show Info I see that I have custom access. I am trying to use Songbird to play said .flac files. I have Folder Management turned on. When I try to import to Library it errors out and says make sure drive exists and is writable. This seems like a permissions issue but I do not see how I could change them. If anyone knows of a good .flac player for the mac that also organizes folder structures like iTunes please let me know. This and the ability to write to a NTFS drive is what I am looking for.

• CURL on PHP 5.2 works in CLI but not in IIS

  I have a Windows 2003 Server running IIS with php 5.2.8, I'm trying to use CURL, and it works in CLI mode (if i execute php.exe) but it does not seem to be registered when running under IIS. The output of PHP info in both CLI and IIS show the same 'Loaded Configuration File', but under IIS it does not give the CURL info box. c:\program files\php\php.exe -i shows ... Loaded Configuration File => C:\Program Files\PHP\php.ini ... curl cURL support => enabled cURL Information => libcurl/7.16.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8i zlib/1.2.3 phpinfo() ... Loaded Configuration File => C:\Program Files\PHP\php.ini ... NOTE: This server also runs php 5.3 in c:\program files\php-5.3.0 and CURL does properly work with that installation.

• Monitor network connectivity in WP7 apps

  Most interesting Windows Phone apps rely on some network service for their functionality. So at some point in your app you may need to know programmatically if there is network connection available or not. For example, the Translator by Moth app relies on the Bing Translation service for translations. When a request for translation (text or voice) is made, the network call may fail. The failure reason is not evident from any of the return results, so I check the connection to see if it is present. Dependent on that, a different message is shown to the user. Before the translation phase is even reached, at the app start up time the Bing service is queried for its list of  languages; in that case I don't want to show the user a message and instead want to be notified when the network is available in order to send the query out again. So for those two requirements (which I imagine are common in other apps) I wrote a simple wrapper MyNetwork static class to the framework APIs: Call once MyNetwork.MonitorNetworkAvailability() method so it monitors the network change At any time check the MyNetwork.IsConnected property to check for network presence Subscribe to its MyNetwork.ConnectionEstablished event Optionally, during debugging use its MyNetwork.ChangeStatus method to simulate a change in network status As usual, there may be better ways to achieve this, but this class works perfectly for my scenarios. • How can I get Skype to not stay minimized in the task bar?

  Since two or three updates Skype insists taking up a taskbar slot for its main window (I set it to use the “Compact View”, but it applies to the default view as well). Since I don't need the main window most of the time since I have individual windows for the contacts I'm writing to this is ? a taskbar button wasted if no other Skype windows are open and ? still in the way when there are other windows open as it's a window I never need but still sometimes mis-click on when the thumbnails show up. Is there a way to send Skype to the Notification area again?

• Share on: FB, Tweet, Digg, Linkedin, Delicious, My mother, ... it's just on fashion, or some real value?

  Nowadays your site is not in fashion if you don't show at least a couple of share buttons like these: Is this just fashion, or do people actually get something good out of it? When I say "something good" I mostly mean something that you could measure, and not just the feeling that was good. Maybe I can better explain with an example: did you notice (in some way) that many people clicked on those links to share your page/s on those web 2.0 social sites? And in such a case on which social networks did you see they mostly share your pages? BTW I'm not talking about Google PR, i know all web 2.0 social sites use nofollow everywhere and even hidden links, so they are useless by themselves for PR. UPDATE: According to this video, Google's Alter Ego says that they now use in some way data from social sites in ranking. If this is true, it's obvious that the Share on button for FB, Tweet, etc are definitely of some values. But again my question is more about what you noticed in your real experience to be a direct benefit of adding those type of "Share On" links on your webisite? I.e. did you see more traffic coming in form FB, or some users who bought your products because of FB or Twitter? Or any other benefits? Thanks

In the beginning login was fast enough after I put the password it hardly takes 3 to 4 sec to enter in desktop, but now its taking like more that 40 sec to show desktop after entering password. whats the problem, is there any solution? • How to let maas' cloud-init client select internal mirror?

  Our maas lan can't access internet and have a internal apt-mirror site 192.168.3.6. I changed mirror set of maas server's snippets/maas_proxy file like: d-i mirror/country string manual d-i mirror/http/hostname string 192.168.3.6 d-i mirror/http/directory string /ubuntu d-i mirror/http/proxy string I deployed two maas node ok. Dashboard show the two node's state are ready. But node's cloud-init client changed the apt's sources.list like this: ## Note, this file is written by cloud-init on first boot of an instance ## modifications made here will not survive a re-bundle. ## if you wish to make changes you can: ## a.) add 'apt_preserve_sources_list: true' to /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg ## or do the same in user-data ... deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise main ... Directly use cobbler install node(without maas), the node apt's sources.list like: ... deb http://192.168.3.6/ubuntu precise main deb-src http://192.168.3.6/ubuntu precise main ... • What are the best strategies for selling Android apps?

  I'm a young developer hoping to sell my apps I made for Android soon. My applications are basically 99% finished so I'm investigating what would be the best marketing strategy to use to sell my apps. I'm sure the brilliant minds here can give me some great advice. I'm particularly interested in your thoughts on the following points (especially from experienced Android developers): Is it more profitable to sell an app for free with ads or to sell an app without ads for a price? Perhaps a combination of a free ad version and a paid ad-free version? If you give away an app for free with ads on it is it ethical to decline bending over backwards to support it? How much does piracy actually affect potential sales? Should any effort be put towards preventing it? Can you still make a profit off your application if you make it open source? Could you perhaps make more of a profit from the attention you would get by doing so? Is Google's Android Marketplace really the best place to release Android apps? It is worthwhile enough to maintain a developer blog or website to keep users updated on your development progress and software releases? Any other suggestions you could give me to maximize profit meanwhile keeping users happy and coming back for more would also be greatly appreciated. While I appreciate general tips and tricks, I'd like to ask that if possible you please go the extra step and show how they specifically apply to selling Android apps. Marketing statistics, developer retrospect, and any additional experience you can share from your time selling Android apps is what I would love to see most. • HDMI video output not working for external monitor

  I have installed from scratch ubuntu GNOME 14.04 with gnome-flashback on my old HP HDX 16 laptop (core 2 duo p8600 + nvidia GT9600M + 4GB of ram) and I have problems with the HDMI output (I use it to extend my desktop on a dell U2412M 1920x1200 monitor). In the following I summarize the configurations that I have tried: Using the open source nouveau drivers, only the laptop monitor works, no signal from the external monitor connected to the HDMI output. However, the output of the xrandr command show that the HDMI output is connected with the correct resolution 1920x1200 (I find this thing really weird). Nouveau drivers with VGA connection works without problems on the external monitor, but the image is blurry compared to the HDMI connection. Using the nvidia drivers (I have tried different versions: nvidia-331-updates and the xorg-edgers versions nvidia-334 and nvidia-337) the HDMI output works, but I have system instabilities, random crashes and display freezes. I can't even enter in terminal mode with ctrl-alt-f1, so I have to manually shut down the laptop with the power button. I really would like to use the HDMI output with the nouveau drivers to avoid the system instabilities that I experienced with the nvidia drivers, but I can't figure out how to make it works. • Acer Ferrari 3000 in portrait display mode

  I have a Acer Ferrari 3000 noetbook that I like to connnect to a external dispaly and show it in portrait mode. The computer runs a ATI Radeon 9200 graphic chipset and I can't find the setting for portrait and start believe the graphics card actually doesn't support it? I've looked at the latest drivers and can see that this has changed. What are my options? Can I buy some sort of external graphics thingy or other possible solutions will get up votes! ;)

• Ubuntu 9.10 is not starting on netbook

  I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my external hard drive cause it's cool to be able to borrow a friend's laptop and be able to have my entire system. It works on the 2 systems i tested it on: my desktop and my mom's laptop. I had to work on something earlier so i borrowed my friend's netbook. I started it up, chose Ubuntu 9.10.20 and it got to the Ubuntu loading screen with the 3 people holding hands right before user selection then it suddenly went black. Naturally, i freaked out because it wasn't my laptop. I held the power button down and reset the netbook but the screen was still black, it didn't even show the BIOS. I repeated the process without my hard drive, and it was still black without the BIOS showing up. I had to remove the battery, plug it to a power source, and power up to start the netbook up again. Can anyone tell me what happened?

• SQL 2000 and group names

  I have a SQL 2000 server which has databases, under user section of the database object, I have some NT 4.0 groups. These groups were migrated over to Active Directory some time ago using ADMT with SID history. The original source domain groups have since been deleted. The access shown is olddomain\groupname. I don't know why, if they were ntfs permissions they would update automatically to target\groupname. The users in the AD domain still have access to the database as they are a member of the migrated group (Target\groupname). I was wondering 1) Why does the old group (source\groupname) show up as it doesn't exist anymore. But access is still granted to the target group? 2) Is there any easy way to update the group name from source\groupname to target\groupname? Thanks for any help.

  I recently compiled php 5.4 from source. I have Centos 6. I used this configuration: # ./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-mysql # make # make install # cp php.ini-dist /usr/local/lib/php.ini I realize now that I do not have cURL installed. I don't know how to install cURL after a compiled installation of php. Using yum install php-curl installs cURL for php 5.3. I tried this already with an apache restart and it did not show up on my phpinfo file. How do I install cURL under these circumstances?

The CCMSetup makes it to the PC, files are there, it gets added to the services for automatic start, it starts, but quits almost instantly. • Koans, now available in Python flavor

  Recently a Python developer friend with whom I was pair programming with suggested that I show him how to write a little Ruby. I responded by telling him to check out Ruby Koans as a starting point. However I wanted to try that in reverse at the same time with me learning some Python. I did a bit of googling, and sure enough someone had started writing some Python Koans. It just needed finishing... So, a few weeks later Python Koans is now complete and ready for action! Aside from the differing philosophical approaches behind the two languages, Ruby and Python are fairly similar. We had to come up with completely new material for a few subjects like multiple inheritance and decorators, but for most features in Ruby there is something roughly comparable in Python. I highly recommend writing tests (or koans) as a means to lean a new language or framework. I've learned a lot from doing this.
