• Best way to do partial update content on ASP.NET

  Initially i was planning to use master page for every page in my application. At the end, i found out every times the page is changed, it reload full page even it have the same master page. I have confused the frameset with the master page. Then, i have 2 ideas in my minds to achieve it by not using master page. Using iframe and set the attribute to runat server, so that i can change the page in my codebehind.(I preferred to control the page flow in server side) Make every single child page to user control. Then dynamically load it to the panel in codebehind. Please give me some advise which method is the best in ASP.NET with AJAX enabled, or other ways that is better. Thanks.

• Spring/EJB 3 books?

  Ok so I'm a complete beginner when it comes to Spring and EJB and I really want to change it, the problem is I can't find any single book on Spring 3/EJB 3, everything is about 2 (for Spring/EJB) or 2.5 (for Spring). What are the differences between 2.x and 3? Should I just go with the 2.x books and then google the differences? I was thinking about getting Pro Spring 2.5 from Apress and Head First EJB (huge fan, ut from what I've heard it is rather out of date), or are there better positions?

• Determine if Alpha Channel is Used in an Image

  As I'm bringing in images into my program, I want to determine if: they have an alpha-channel if that alpha-channel is used #1 is simple enough with using Image.IsAlphaPixelFormat. For #2 though, other than looping through every single pixel, is there a simple way I can determine if at least one of the pixels has an alpha channel that is used (i.e. set to some other value than 255)? All I need back is a boolean and then I'll make determination as to whether to save it out to 32-bit or 24-bit.

• Git: removing selected commits from repository

  I would like to remove selected commits from a linear commit tree, so that the commits do not show in the commit log. My commit tree looks something like: R--A--B--C--D--E--HEAD I would like to remove the B and C commits. So that they do not show in the commit log, but changes from A to D should be preserved. Maybe by introducing a single commit, so that B and C become BC and the tree looks like. R--A--BC--D--E--HEAD Or, ideally, after A comes D directly. D' representing changes from A to B, B to C and C to D. R--A--D'--E--HEAD Is this possible? if yes, how? Some notes that might be helpful: This is a fairly new project so has no branches as of now, hence no merges as well. Side note: It's a personal project, so no, I'm not trying to destroy any evidence :)

• How can I run code in a C# class definition each time any instance of the class is deserialized?

  I am trying to derive a class from ObservableCollection and I need to run just a single line of code each and every time any instance of this class is deserialized.   I'm designing an hierarchical distributed system (every node has zero or more "master" nodes to which it propagates its current data). The data gets continuously updated and I'd like to guarantee that at least N nodes have almost-current data at any given time. I do not need complete consistency, only eventual consistency (t.i. for any time instant, the current snapshot of data should eventually appear on at least N nodes. It is tricky to define the term "current" here, but still). Nodes may fail and go back up at any moment, and there is no single "central" node. O overflowers! • Inconsistent MySQL COLLATE errors across databases

  I have two physically-separate MySQL databases on which I have to run a single query. The query has a section of SQL that looks like this: and foo_table.bar_column like concat('%', rules.pattern, '%') COLLATE utf8_general_ci It runs fine on database A but on database B I get this error: ERROR 1253 (42000): COLLATION 'utf8_general_ci' is not valid for CHARACTER SET 'latin1' If I remove the collation it runs fine on database B but on database A I get this error: ERROR 1267 (HY000): Illegal mix of collations (utf8_general_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_unicode_ci,IMPLICIT) for operation 'like' Is there a version of the query that will run on both databases? Or, is there a configuration I can change on either database to make the query happy in both places? Update: Database A is version 5.1.38, Database B is version 5.1.34

• Browser tabs creates multuple instances of a sidebar for each tabs. I want only one sidebar for all

  I have a sidebar (iframe). The problem is, if you open a second tab (in the same browser) it creates a new instance of the same sidebar. That means i have now 2 sidebars. In exemple, if i close the sidebar in the first tab, i would like to have it closed in the second tab as well. Is it possible to have only one instance of a sidebar in a browser, so that even if i open a new tab, the sidebar is not affected. (the goal is to interact with evey pages we visit with one sidebar. If anyone need precisions, please ask. I'll be checking for responses every single days.

  Hi, I have got several thousands of lines of a web application source code, initially written on a US development system, to maintain. It makes heavy use of SQL statement strings, which are combined on the fly, e.g. string SQL = "select * from table where double_value = " + Math.Round(double_value, 2); Don't comment on bad programming style, that doesn't help me in this case :) The cruix: My system uses a German locale, which in turn leads to wrong SQL statements, like this: "select * from table where double_value = 15,5" (Note the comma as decimal separator instead of a point). Question: What is the most "elegant" way to change the locale of the web app in this case) to US or UK in order to prevent being forced to change and inspect every single line of code? .net 3.5 is not an option (would give me the chance to overwrite ToString() in an extension class) Kind regards

There is a replacement table defined for almost 12.000 UTF-8 characters, most of them are to be replaced by single characters, but some must be replaced by two or even three characters (e.g. Greek theta should become TH). The documents can be bulky (100MB+). How to do it in Java? I came up with the idea of using XSLT, but I'm not too sure if this is the best option.

Also, if during execution the database goes down and comes up again, how can i ensure that my program recovers from this and continues running instead of throwing an exception and exiting?

Yeah, I know I post a lot of questions, but thats because I either need assurance that I am doing it right, what I am doing wrong, or if I am totally clueless, and cant find anything in the documentation. Anyways, I am trying to check for duplicate nodes. Here is how I would want to do it: Loop thru my nodes, and compare each single node's text (record), but if I got many nodes, wouldnt that be too time and memory consuming? We throw a simple exception without any inner/orig exception, but we get this message on the .Net side. Additional XML content is present in the fault detail element. Only a single element is allowed. Works fine with a java client, as in we can get the exception message. What can we do?

  Hi, Hope my subject line was descriptive enough. Basically, I have a table called Students, and one called Absences. The Students table contains student information (Name, DOB, StudentID etc.), the Absences table contains any absences (Date, Reason, related by StudentID). I want to get a full list of the students, plus a count of their absences.   I'm trying to connect to a custom http service written by another developer. The service responds fine on a local IP address and port number. Such as: http://10.1.1.1:1234 but it does NOT respond to http://localhost:1234 or http://127.0.0.1:1234 The service is a simple single function application written in VC++ that takes an http post string and returns another string. I'm trying to all it from C# using HttpWebRequest.GetResponse, but I can reproduce the same problem manually from a web browser... Test environment is Windows 2008 Server. Bottom line I'm looking for some troubleshooting tips to help the other developer fix his code.

• Doing a join across two databases with different collations on SQL Server and getting an error.

  I know, I know with what I wrote in the question I shouldn't be surprised. But my situation is slowly working on an inherited POS system and my predecessor apparently wasn't aware of JOINs so when I looked into one of the internal pages that loads for 60 seconds I see that it's a fairly quick, rewrite these 8 queries as one query with JOINs situation. Problem is that besides not knowing about JOINs he also seems to have had a fetish for multiple databases and surprise, surprise they use different collations. Fact of the matter is we use all "normal" latin characters that English speaking people would consider the entire alphabet and this whole thing will be out of use in a few months so a bandaid is all I need. Long story short is I need some kind of method to cast to a single collation so I can compare two fields from two databases. Exact error is: Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "SQL_Latin1_General_CP850_CI_AI" and "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" in the equal to operation.
