• How do people deal with mental plateaus in programming?

  Has anyone come across a strange behaviour with the Camera API when used on Sony-Ericsson X10 or Droid? For example the following code doesn't work on those devices.   Say I want to create an array of pixel values to pass into the createBitmap method described here. I have three int values r, g, b in the range 0 - 0xff. How do I transform those into a opaque pixel p? Does the alpha channel go in the high byte or the low byte? I googled up the documentation but it only states that: Each pixel is stored on 4 bytes. Each channel (RGB and alpha for translucency) is stored with 8 bits of precision (256 possible values.) This configuration is very flexible and offers the best quality. It should be used whenever possible. So, how to write this method? int createPixel(int r, int g, int b) { retrurn ? }

• MVC - thin controller idea - Codeigniter/Zend

  Hi, Could some one possibly clarify this for me. In the MVC paradigm, the idea is to keep the controller as thin as possible, it is also true that the model is the bit that communicates with data sources such as the database, XML-RPC etc and this is where the business logic should go. Is the POST and GET data a 'data source' and should that kind of data be handled by the model or should it be by the controller. I would normally call a method in the model and pass it the post data, the data would be quality checked by the controller and the model method would simply do the insertion or whatever. Should it be though that controller just calls the model method if a post has occured and it is responsible for sanity check, data checks etc.

• Porting existing code from C# 2.0 to C#3.0 and .Net 3.5 (possibly .net 4.0)

  Our one and only enterprise application suite has been developed over last 3 years using C# 2.0 on .Net 3.0. We use winforms and WCF heavily. The development tools is VS 2005 Pro / TFS 2005 / Resharper 3.1 As technical lead I obviously understand the benefits in a move to C#3.0 and .Net 3.5. But I want to convince management for a move to C#3.0, .Net 3.5, VS 2008 and TFS 2008. They will obviously be interested in things like productivity, cost, quality etc. Please suggest me some ideas on how best to make my case. Given that this may not happen till mid next year am I better off to hold till VS 2010 and .Net 4.0 is out.

The substrings that start with '+[0-9]' followed by '[A-z]{n}.' need to be replaced with simply '+' where the variable n is the digit from earlier in the substring. Can that n be back referenced? • Is there a way to only have StyleCop documenation requirements SA1600 on public methods/properties?

  I've been using XMLDoc for a few years now, and have definitely grown into the mindset for supplying quality documentation for public methods and properties. However under StyleCop (and particularly its Resharper highlighting) I've noticed that the documentation requirements apply to identically to public, internal, protected and private methods. This seems a little counter-intuative to me, so I would ideally like to suppress it down to suggestions at least for private methods. Unfortunately it does seem as if the suppress setting is only across all public, internal, private, etc. Am I missing something or is this by design?

  Here is the PNG file and what it looks like in a QWebView when accessed via http://sstatic.net/so/img/logo.png: When accessed via HTTP: <img src="http://sstatic.net/so/img/logo.png" width='250' height='61' /> When accessed via a resource: <img src="qrc:/images/logo.png" width='250' height='61' /> As you can see, the only modification was the src attribute of the image tag... why the drop in quality? Edit: The file is being shrunk via width: and height: in the style attribute, if that makes a difference. I updated the code.

My question is, does intuit products purely payment gateway solution? as in this stage, we are not involved with any dev work about quickbook, the main focus for us is deliver the high quality shopping cart solution, we read something about intuit's web shop solution but seems this one require quickbook running in desktop to sync the data? Very confused now, if anyone had experience before, please help!

• Android 3.2 HTTP streaming

  I'm trying to create an app to stream live TV. Currently the problem I'm facing is that after say 10 minutes of playing, the video will freeze but the audio will carry on. This is on a 1.3mbps stream. I also have lower streams, such as a 384kbps stream, that might last an hour or so, but will still do the same. I've tested this with a local video, that is high quality (file size is 2.3gb) and that has no lag and doesn't freeze at all, so it must be something to do with the way HLS is streamed to android. Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this problem? Thanks

• We have migrated VB6 code to C# in .net.

  The code was migrated using a third party tool. what ever the tool couldnt do, was done by the .net developers, so that all compile issues were fixed. My question is, for such migration activities, do we not bother running unit tests for the functions. Secondly, Could anyone suggest if we should use some tool in VSTS 10 to create a UML model of this code to minimize risks of issues that the client might find. How cumbersome is it. Are there any other suggestions for how quality migrated code can be delivered, in light of the fact that the functionality of the original VB6 application is unknown to us.

  Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. (Value does not fall within the expected range.), but this is not the case as thats an old issue and i hope it has been included in SP2... Logs are from olders to newest (descending order). They don't appear to be very helpful. • Metro apps crash on startup, driver or permissions issue?

  After installing Win8 x64 RC, Metro apps worked correctly, but desktop OpenGL apps were slow and unresponsive. I installed the latest Win8 nVidia drivers, and the OpenGL apps started working correctly. At the same time, because of annoying permission messages, I changed the C:\ drive and all its files ownerships to my user, and gave it full permission. I restarted my pc after installing the drivers, and now Metro apps only show the splash screen, then crash. I tried installing other versions of the nVidia drivers, with the same result. My GPU is a GeForce GTX275. Is this a known problem with nVidia drivers? Or maybe changing the ownership of C:\ is the real problem? Thank you. • Unicenter Software Delivery 4 not able to connect to MS SQL 2000 Database after W2003 SP2 upgrade

  Hello Everyone Yesterday I installed the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 on a Windows Server 2003 which has Unicenter Software Delivery 4 installed. Prior to the installation I disabled every CA service on the server (Brightstor, SDO , RCO, TNG) and the MS SQL 2000 service. After the installation of the SP2 I enabled the services again but the Unicenter Service is not able to connect to the MS SQL 2000 Database anymore. The database itself is up and running and I can connect to it with the Enterprise Manager. A dbcc checkdb doesnt return any errors on the Unicenter database.   I recently installed OpenVPN on my Ubuntu VPS. Whenenver I try to connect to it, I can establish a connection just fine. However, everything I try to connect to times out. If I try to ping something, it will resolve the IP, but will time out after resolving the IP. (So DNS Server seems to be working correctly) My server.conf has this relevant information (At least I think it's relevant. • Blocking access to websites with objective-C / root privileges in objective-C

  I am writing a program in Objective-C (XCode 3.2, on Snow Leopard) that is capable of either selectively blocking certain sites for a duration or only allow certain sites (and thus block all others) for a duration. The reasoning behind this program is rather simple. I tend to get distracted when I have full internet access, but I do need internet access during my working hours to get to a number of work-related websites. Clearly, this is not a permanent block, but only helps me to focus whenever I find myself wandering a bit too much. At the moment, I am using a Unix script that is called via AppleScript to obtain Administrator permissions. It then activates a number of ipfw rules and clears those after a specific duration to restore full internet access. Simple and effective, but since I am running as a standard user, it gets cumbersome to enter my administrator password each and every time I want to go "offline". Furthermore, this is a great opportunity to learn to work with XCode and Objective-C. At the moment, everything works as expected, minus the actual blocking. I can add a number of sites in a list, specify whether or not I want to block or allow these websites and I can "start" the blocking by specifying a time until which I want to stay "offline". However, I find it hard to obtain clear information on how I can run a privileged Unix command from Objective-C. Ideally, I would like to be able to store information with respect to the Administrator account into the Keychain to use these later on, so that I can simply move into "offline" mode with the convenience of clicking a button. Even more ideally, there might be some class in Objective-C with which I can block access to some/all websites for this particular user without needing to rely on privileged Unix commands. A third possibility is in starting this program with root permissions and the reducing the permissions until I need them, but since this is a GUI application that is nested in the menu bar of OS X, the results are rather awkward and getting it to run each and every time with root permission is no easy task. Anyone who can offer me some pointers or advice? Please, no security-warnings, I am fully aware that what I want to do is a potential security threat.

• Silverlight 4 WCF RIA Services and MVVM is not as simple

  [Disclaimer: I'm ASP.NET MVC Developer] Hi, I'm looking for some best practices with implementing MVVM pattern with WCF RIA in Silverlight 4. I'm not looking to use MEF of IoC for locating my ViewModels. What I would like to know is how to apply MVVM pattern with Silverlight 4 and WCF RIA. I don't want to use other stuff like Prism or MVVM Light toolkit. I found many examples on Internet showing how it is wonderful to drag and drop a datasource on the view and the job is done (it reminds me about my first VB6 developments). I tried to implement MVVM with WCF RIA and it's not strightforward at all. If I understand, the MVVM should contain all the logic in order to unit test it in isolation but when it comes to combine it with WCF RIA it's another story. I have the following questions. Can I use a generated metadata as model ? It would be easier to use it that if I write all from the scratch. As I saw the only way I could get data is through DomainContext or through direct binding in the view (local ressource). I don't want the direct binding in the view, not testable at all. On the other hand I can't use DomainContext, it doesn't expose any single entity !!! All I have is the EntitySet that I can bind to datagrid. How do I bind a single Entity to the DataForm from the ViewModel ? How do I udpate the model to the database ? How do I navigate from one Entity to a collection of it's itemps. For example if I have a Company Entity I would like to show a DataFrom to update a entite informations and a datagrid to show companies adresses. When saving a form would like to save information to Company and for example an information avout which adress was selected as active. Please help me understand how to do it well. Or maybe I should drop the WCF RIA and to do it with WCF from scratch ? What do you think ?

• NSFetchedResultsController crashing on performFetch: when using a cache

  I make use of NSFetchedResultsController to display a bunch of objects, which are sectioned using dates. On a fresh install, it all works perfectly and the objects are displayed in the table view. However, it seems that when the app is relaunched I get a crash. I specify a cache when initialising the NSFetchedResultsController, and when I don't it works perfectly. You have illegally mutated the NSFetchedResultsController's fetch request, its predicate, or its sort descriptor without either disabling caching or using +deleteCacheWithName:' I really have no clue as to why it's saying that, as I don't believe I'm doing anything special that would cause this. The only potential issue is the section header (day), which I construct like this when creating a new object: // Set the new format [formatter setDateFormat:@"dd MMMM"]; // Set the day of the event [event setValue:[formatter stringFromDate:[event valueForKey:@"utc_start"]] forKey:@"day"]; Like I mentioned, all of this works fine if there is no cache involved. Any help appreciated!
