• Freebsd or Linux? as BGP router over 100mbps

  I am building a server to act as a BGP border router for my 100mbps uplink in ISP. I needs these feature: 1) Dual stack BGP peering/routing (at least 100Mbps, maybe more). 2) Potential full internet BGP feed. 3) Some basic ACL functionality. The hardware is L3426/8G ram. NIC will be on-board dual port Broadcom 5716. I've worked with Linux extensively before and it seems to be able to handle 100mbps, but I heard FreeBSD is faster on networking stuff. Which one should I use? And do we have some performance benchmark numbers out there? Cheers.

• Entity Framework Performance Problem

  I'm hoping that someone can help me understand how to overcome a performance problem I'm running into with the latest version of the Entity Framework. In my test, I created my model from a database consisting of around 80 tables. The problem that I'm running into is that the cost of the very first query I run on a thread is very expensive. If I run without pre-compiling views the first query takes anywhere from 5800 to 6600 milliseconds. If I pre-compile the views (see this article) I can get the initial query cost down to about 2800 to 3200 milliseconds. 3 seconds for each request is still unacceptable for my needs. Subsequent queries are very fast. Can you please help me understand how to eliminate the poor performance of the initial query? I'm using the version of entity framework that ships with Visual Studio 2010 RC.

  Hi Team, While preparing a Word 2007 document, I made a mistake. (Not to say I don't have any other copy of the document) While formatting (as a try) I applied the style "Apply Style to Body to match selection". This caused the document to go totally in a wronfg format - having numbers even in tables. Have you ever faced this? Could you please tell how to correct it? • HP DL180 G6 P410 8x SATA 1TB, what is the optimal configuration?

  I have a HP DL180 G6 with a P410 raid controller. Presently this runs using 4x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint SATA drives, in a RAID10 configuration using default settings. I am about to add a backplane to increase the drive capacity from 4 to 12 drives, and I plan to install 4 more 1TB SATA Drives. The drives are matched and have close serial numbers (They arrived together in the Manufacturers pallet). Model HD103UJ 1000GB/7200rpm/32M Rated for 3GB/s I will also be installing RHEL 6.1 x86_64. My question is what would be the optimal RAID settings (stripe etc.) for this configuration? To recap: 8x Model HD103UJ 1000GB/7200rpm/32M Rated for 3GB/s RAID 10 configuration. Thanks in advance. • Tracking changes to firewall configs?

  Myself and one other indivdual will be taking over some of the daily firewall management duties soon and I'm looking for a way to track changes on our firewall configurations for auditing purposes and need some ideas on a good way to track changes the changes that are made. I don't have a lot of specific criteria but here are some of the basic things I would like to be able to do: Access to previous revisions of firewall configs Access to changes made and by whom When specific changes were made I'm wondering if some sort of revision control software would work here as a way to track the the changes? Or if some other approach would work better for managing the change control in this situation. I'm open to any and all suggestions at this point. EDIT: We are using a Checkpoint pair, one passive one active configuration. I will update again with specific model numbers when I get a chance.

• Generate reasonable length license key with asymmetric encryption?

  I've been looking at this all day. I probably should have walked away from it hours ago; I might be missing something obvious at this point. Short version: Is there a way to generate and boil down an asymmetrically encrypted hash to a reasonable number of unambiguous, human readable characters? Long version: I want to generate license keys for my software. I would like these keys to be of a reasonable length (25-36 characters) and easily read and entered by a human (so avoid ambiguous characters like the number 0 and the capital letter O). Finally--and this seems to be the kicker--I'd really like to use asymmetric encryption to make it more difficult to generate new keys. I've got the general approach: concatenate my information (user name, product version, a salt) into a string and generate a SHA1() hash from that, then encrypt the hash with my private key. On the client, build the SHA1() hash from the same information, then decrypt the license with the public key and see if I've got a match. Since this is a Mac app, I looked at AquaticPrime, but that generates a relatively large license file rather than a string. I can work with that if I must, but as a user I really like the convenience of a license key that I can read and print. I also looked at CocoaFob which does generate a key, but it is so long that I'd want to deliver it as a file anyway. I fooled around with OpenSSL for a while but couldn't come up with anything of a reasonable length. So...am I missing something obvious here? Is there a way to generate and boil down an asymmetrically encrypted hash to a reasonable number of unambiguous, human readable characters? I'm open to buying a solution. But I work on a number of different of platforms, so I'd want something portable. Everything I've looked at so far has been platform specific. Many, many thanks for a solution! • Maven: How to create assembly with snapshot artifacts without timestamps file name?

  I've a repository containing snapshot artifacts with timestamps. I want to create an assembly, that contains the dependencies. This works fine. But the artifact names contains the timestamp. So i wonder how to remove the timestamp from filename for the assembly only. I've used this dependencySet: <outputFileNameMapping>${artifact.artifactId}-${artifact.version}.${artifact.extension}</outputFileNameMapping> But version seams to contain already the timestamp. So is there any chance to get a 1.1.1-SNAPSHOT instead of 1.1.1-20100323.071348-182?

• Unable to add SSH pub key for GitHub

  I am trying to set up a new GitHub account as part of learning ruby on rails. My OS is windows. I am having the following problem while trying to add my public key to the GitHub SSH public keys. When I put the key in the text area, supply a name, and click 'Add Key', I am taken to the Job profile page without any confirmation that the key has been added.(I am using SSH client GUI to generate RSA keys). When I come back to the SSH public keys page, I see that the key is not there. I tried this multiple times...without any result. • Generic socket 940 CPU fan interchangeable with HP part number 411454-001

  Hi, I'm trying to find a generic CPU fan that will fit the air duct in an XW9300. Note that there are two CPU fan mounting schemes used on this machine. One with two grommets in the motherboard that the CPU fan screws into and one with a plastic collar and base plate. The form factor I'm looking for is the former (see picture below): Two HP part numbers for fans in this form factor are 411454-001 (shown below) and 416055-001. Note that the dimensions are important as the machine has an air duct that fits over the fan. Can anyone tell me the manufacturer and model of an equivalent generic part? Better yet, do you know somewhere (preferrably in the UK) that I can obtain such an item from?

  I have huge text files with two fields, the first is a string the second is an integer. The files are sorted by the first field. What I'd like to get in the output is one line per unique string and the sum of the numbers for the identical strings. Some strings appear only once while other appear multiple times. E.g. Given the sample data below, for the string glehnia I'd like to get 10+22=32 in the result. Any suggestions how to do this either with gnuwin32 command line tools or in linux shell?   Hi Now and then there is "news" about that the ip numbers will run out in X years, and we must change to tcp/ip v6... And even thou this crisis never really happens it has waken a question, how do you get started with tcp/ip v6? What can I do at home and is this a good or bad idea? Can you use IPv4 and IPv6 in the same cables in the same LAN, or do you need to physically separate them? I've specified the type of exchange server i'm connecting to but when I try to execute the code i have, it gives me Error 1 The type 'System.TimeZoneInfo' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced. • Data import wizard library for .Net?

  Does anyone know of a 3rd party data import wizard that can be embedded into applications? It should import from Excel, Access, SQLServer, csv, tab-separated flat file, XML, Oracle etc. We have a fixed data structure within our application and the user should be able to configure the wizard to match his/her import fields to our own data structure. The wizard should be a library of sorts – preferably a .Net type library. We may want to have it both web-based and desktop based (hence we may need an ASP.Net controls version and a Winforms version). We may also want integration with WPF and Silverlight. If there’s no UI wizard available, does anyone know of a non-UI library that supports easily configurable import from many, many different datasources?

When I run the ps command from the command-line, the $? is correctly set, but within the script it is always 1. • How to diagnose very slow pagefile

  Quite often, one of the applications I use freezes (“does not respond”) for a while, in extreme cases for few minutes. This happens especially when when switching apps. During this time, the HDD light flashes constantly and perfmon show that HDD is used 100% of the time (OTOH, CPU isn't) and that pagefile is being read (which is to be expected when switching apps), but at a very slow rate. When I sort the disk table in perfmon by read or write, the file read and wrote the most is the pagefile, but it's still quite low rate (I don't remember the numbers). How can I diagnose what's causing this? I use Windows Vista, and the computer is quite ordinary two years old laptop.
