  • 2 RJ45 connectors on a one WAN cable

    - by mr_stavo
Hello, I encountered strange setup on a network at company where I do some work. They have internet connection from small ISP located in the same building, all I see is one CAT5 cable with 2 RJ45 connectors. One is going to WAN port on the router and another into LAN port on the same router. This is the only way for internet connection to work. I tried to connect my laptop to one of the RJ45 but it won't work. Now, what is the purpose for such setup?

  • TCP and fair bandwidth sharing

    - by lxgr
The congestion control algorithm(s) of TCP seem to distribute the available bandwidth fairly between individual TCP flows. Is there some way to enable (or more precisely, enforce) fair bandwidth sharing on a per-host instead of a per-flow basis on a router? There should not be an (easy) way for a user to gain a disproportional bandwidth share by using multiple concurrent TCP flows (the way some download managers and most P2P clients do). I'm currently running a DD-WRT router to share a residential DSL line, and currently it's possible to (inadvertently or maliciously) hog most of the bandwidth by using multiple concurrent connections, which affecty VoIP conversations badly. I've played with the QoS settings a bit, but I'm not sure how to enable fair bandwidth sharing on a per-IP basis (per-service is not an option, as most of the flows are HTTP).

  • D-LINK 2450U DSL router: Port forwarding forwading to the modem itself, not the specified IP

    - by axk
I found a similar question but it has no satisfactory answers. I have a D-LINK 2540U DSL router. It has a basic port forwarding(under DNS - Virtual Servers) configuration in the administration panel where you specify: external port range, protocol, internal port range, server IP address and it is supposed to forward that port to that IP address. When I first set it up for a Real VNC connection it worked fine, just as I expected. Then I added a DynDNS configuration entry in the router's 'Dynamic DNS' section and added an additional SSH (22) forwarding rule. The SSH forwarding also worked fine (now with the dynamic hostname, but I suppose it doesn't make any difference as far as SSH is concerned). Then I removed the SSH rule and after that the VNC forwarding stopped working with the VNC client failing to connect (I have tried to connect with telnet and it also failed to connect, so it wasn't a VNC problem). After adding a rule for port 80 it turned out it would forward on port 80 though not to the specified server IP but to the modem itself. At least it is what it looks like, because it gives me the administration panel when I connect to my external IP (both using a browser and plain telnet in which case I can see that it is mini_hhtpd sitting on the port, which is obviously the modem's administration panel). Have anybody encountered a similar problem with port forwarding? I have tried to do a reset through the administration panel and to restore a backup of the settings made before I started playing with port forwarding, but it didn't help. Should I do a 'hard' reset with the button on the modem? Is it any different from the administration panel's reset (Restore default)?

  • Router and Switch VLAN Configuration for Isolated Network

    - by Ben
I haven't worked with VLANs much in the past and I was hoping if I could get a good explanation of what I need to setup for this to work. I have a Netgear WNR2000v2 router and a Netgear GS108T smart switch currently in my network. The fourth port on the router connects to port one on the switch. I would like to be able to isolated port 8 on the switch for use as a "guest port" when I bring home malware infested PCs for repair. I figured the VLAN capabilities of the GS108T would be able to do this for me, but I think I have a misunderstanding of how the VLAN actually works. Port 8 needs internet access but should not be able to communicate with the rest of the PCs on the home network. The subnet for the home network is 192.168.1.0/24 and I would like the guest PC to have A) 192.168.1.64 or B) 192.168.2.2. I am reading a lot of stuff about port trunking and VLAN membership, but I am confused as to which setup needs to be in place to make this work. Any help is greatly appreciated! Let me know if there is more information I need to provide. Definitely looking to learn something from this project. Thanks!

  • New router messed up server 2003 setup...

    - by Aceth
Hey, We were sent a new 2wire router today configured it as best we can to match the old bt voyager. We've also got X static IP's. We've manage to get our webserver on one of the new IP's public facing. then we use a hardware firewall which is in a DMZ again with a different static IP. This firewall then is our gateway for our internal LAN. with a few servers etc. The problem we're having is only our PDC (primary Domain controller which has exchange 2003 on) can't ping externally even an external IP. We've connected laptops to the 2wire router and obtain a private ip 192.168.1.X and it works fine can ping etc. our other servers with an internal ip behind the firewall can ping out fine. We've connected to the firewalls logging console and the pings from the server are allowed through so its fine there. The server in question is a Windows server 2003 R2 Enterprise SP2 + Exchange 2003 Server doesn't have firewall turned on. it has static private IP .. gateway is pointing to the right one External Static IP is routing fine inwards We've ran out of ideas .. help??

  • pfSense router on a LAN with two gateways

    - by JohnCC
I have a LAN with an ADSL modem/router on it. We have just gained an alternative high-speed internet connection at our location, and I want to connect the LAN to it, eventually dropping the ADSL. I've chosen to use a small PFSense box to connect the LAN to the new WAN connection. Two servers on the LAN run services accessible to the outside via NAT using the single ADSL WAN IP. We have DNS records which point to this IP. I want to do the same via the new connection, using the WAN IP there. That connection permits multiple IPs, so I have configured pfSense using virtual IP's, 1:1 NAT and appropriate firewall rules. When I change the servers' default gateway settings to the pfSense box, I can access the services via the new WAN IPs without a problem. However, I can no longer access them via the old WAN IP. If I set the servers' default gateway back to the ADSL router, then the opposite is true - I can access the services via the ADSL IP, but not via the new one. In the first case, I believe this is because an incoming SYN packet arrives at the ADSL WAN IP, and is NAT'd and sent to the internal IP of the server. The server responds with a SYN/ACK which it sends via its default gateway, the pfSense box. The pfSense box sees a SYN/ACK that it saw no SYN for and drops the packet. Is there any sensible way around this? I would like the services to be accessible via both IPs for a short period at least, since once I change the DNS it will take a while before everyone picks up the new address.

  • Port Forwarding failing only to Ubuntu servers from Draytek router

    - by Rufinus
I know this is a kinda unusal question, but Draytek support (..which is very eager to solve the issue) seems to reach its limits. Scenario: Draytek Vigor Multiwan router with current firmware. Multiple WAN IP Aliases on one of the wan ports DMZ (or port forwarding doesnt matter) from wan ip alias to internal host currently i have two internal hosts: 192.168.0.51 (Ubuntu) 192.168.0.53 (Debian) both should be accessible from outside via one of the wan ip aliases. both are accessible with their internal ip's at all times (!) If the router gots restartet, both external ips are forwarding to its internal hosts. But after a few minutes up to 2 hours, the ubuntu host is no longer reachable via its external interface. The debian hosts on the other hand is reachable. In what does ubuntu differs from debian ? I know at least of one user with the exact same problem. see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10994279 Any ideas ? TIA EDIT: via ping diagnostics directly on vigor, 192.168.0.53 is pingable, 192.168.0.51 is not. but both hosts are perfectly reachable from anywhere inside the network. if i restart ubuntu networking it works again for a short time.... i'm out of ideas.. EDIT 2: after further investigation, i noticed a ping from .51 to the network (or a host in the internet) is enough to make the port-forwarding working again. So i will add an Cronjob as a "keep-alive" ping. This will solve the problem, but the reason for this behaivor is still in the dark. Thanks to all commentors.

  • Setting up VPN with Snow Leopard Server and Linksys router

    - by SueP
I'd like to get VPN going so I can log in to the office securely from home. I'm using Snow Leopard machines everywhere, and currently have Airport Extremes set up at home and at the office. I have a mac mini with Snow Leopard Server that I'm going to move to the office to act as my server. I just bought a Linksys 4-port router because it says it does VPN (model RVS4000). My problem is, I don't have a clue how to set this thing up, and the more reading I do, the more confused I get. Do I need two of these routers, one at each end? My laptop and iPad claim they can do VPN, so I was assuming I only needed one VPN router? At this point, I literally don't know what questions to ask, or where to plug this thing in. Presumably, between the modem and the airport, but...? If somebody can walk me thru some really basic setup, I'd be very grateful. Right now, I feel like going outside and screaming for a while. But that might attract the local cougar, and after the prints I saw on the arena this afternoon, I don't want to draw its attention. :-)

  • Can't reliably ping 6224 router from directly-attached system

    - by David Mackintosh
OK, here's my situation. This is on the internet. The 6224 is the router in this picture and physically resides in Kanata. Both VLAN 1697 and 3994 are provided by an internet service provider. These VLANs are provided through a single 1Gb ethernet wire. The Kanata hosts are directly attached to the 6224; the other two sites are remote. VLAN 3994 is a single IP address space, so theoretically it shouldn't matter physically where the hosts on that subnet are. Here's the problem. I have a monitoring system which is connected further into the internet, so probes from the monitor would come in to this diagram on the 1697 VLAN. When I ping hosts at Albert or Bells Corners from the internet, there is 0 loss. The connection looks perfect. When I ping hosts at Kanata, I lose anywhere from 10 to 40% of the pings. The loss is not predictable, but: when I do lose them, I always lose at least 3, usually 4, rarely more, pings in a bunch. I have attached a monitor directly to the 6224 in Kanata on 3994.. When the monitor pings the 6224 routing interface, I see exactly the same loss pattern -- but NOT at the same time as the loss from the remote system. Ping time is around 1ms. When the monitor pings another system directly attached to the 6224, there is 0 loss. Ping time is about 0.1ms, one-tenth of the time to ping the router. Anyone know what is going on here?

  • Network outage caused by SMC8013WG Cable Modem/Router ?

    - by mkocubinski
At work, we have a basic Class C Network. The gateway/router is a SMC8013WG (stock comcast commercial cable modem), and simple unmanaged switch (HP Pro Curve 1400 24G). The SMC8013WG is our default gateway as well as DHCP server. Periodically, I'd say almost every other day.. the entire network will just stop responding. I won't be able to ping/see the gateway, any computers on our local network, or anything on the internet. The only way to fix this is to unplug the Comcast cable modem, wait, and plug back in. This unfailingly fixes the problem. But this doesn't make much sense to me.. shouldn't the network still be fine locally, since everything is plugged into the switch anyway? Why would resetting the router fix this? Can anyone suggest anything to check to in order to narrow this problem down? Just to be clear.. here is the basic topology: { Internet } -- (12.345.67.89) Comcast Cable Modem (192.168.1.1) -- Switch -- 192.168.1.2-254 P.S. Our IT guy is in about 3 hours a day every other week or so, so.. we're kind of on our own most of the time.

  • CISCO 2911 Router configuration

    - by bala
Device cisco 2911 router configuration support is required please. I have exchange server 2010 configured and working without any errors the problem is in cisco router configuration when exchange server sends emails out the receives WAN IP not the public ip. I have configured RDNS lookups with our MX record IP addesses that match the FQDN but all our emails are rejected because it does not match with the public ip. Receiving mails problem is not an problem all mails are coming through. i am sure i am missing something on the router configuration that does not sends the public ip, can any one help me to solve this issue. • Router Alert options on IGMPv2 packets

    - by Scakko
I'm trying to forge an IGMPv2 Membership Request packet and send it on a RAW socket. The RFC 3376 states: IGMP messages are encapsulated in IPv4 datagrams, with an IP protocol number of 2. Every IGMP message described in this document is sent with an IP Time-to-Live of 1, IP Precedence of Internetwork Control (e.g., Type of Service 0xc0), and carries an IP Router Alert option [RFC-2113] in its IP header So the IP_ROUTER_ALERT flag must be set. I'm trying to forge the strict necessary of the packet (e.g. only the IGMP header & payload), so i'm using the setsockopt to edit the IP options. some useful variables: #define C_IP_MULTICAST_TTL 1 #define C_IP_ROUTER_ALERT 1 int sockfd = 0; int ecsockopt = 0; int bytes_num = 0; int ip_multicast_ttl = C_IP_MULTICAST_TTL; int ip_router_alert = C_IP_ROUTER_ALERT; Here's how I open the RAW socket: sock_domain = AF_INET; sock_type = SOCK_RAW; sock_proto = IPPROTO_IGMP; if ((ecsockopt = socket(sock_domain,sock_type,sock_proto)) < 0) { printf("Error %d: Can't open socket.\n", errno); return 1; } else { printf("** Socket opened.\n"); } sockfd = ecsockopt; Then I set the TTL and Router Alert option: // Set the sent packets TTL if((ecsockopt = setsockopt(sockfd, IPPROTO_IP, IP_MULTICAST_TTL, &ip_multicast_ttl, sizeof(ip_multicast_ttl))) < 0) { printf("Error %d: Can't set TTL.\n", ecsockopt); return 1; } else { printf("** TTL set.\n"); } // Set the Router Alert if((ecsockopt = setsockopt(sockfd, IPPROTO_IP, IP_ROUTER_ALERT, &ip_router_alert, sizeof(ip_router_alert))) < 0) { printf("Error %d: Can't set Router Alert.\n", ecsockopt); return 1; } else { printf("** Router Alert set.\n"); } The setsockopt of IP_ROUTER_ALERT returns 0. After forging the packet, i send it with sendto in this way: // Send the packet if((bytes_num = sendto(sockfd, packet, packet_size, 0, (struct sockaddr*) &mgroup1_addr, sizeof(mgroup1_addr))) < 0) { printf("Error %d: Can't send Membership report message.\n", bytes_num); return 1; } else { printf("** Membership report message sent. (bytes=%d)\n",bytes_num); } The packet is sent, but the IP_ROUTER_ALERT option (checked with wireshark) is missing. Am i doing something wrong? is there some other methods to set the IP_ROUTER_ALERT option? Thanks in advance.

  • Failure to obtain IP with ARP over Wi-Fi with personal Wi-Fi router in client mode

    - by axk
I'm trying to connect a Samsung TV to the Internet using a TL-MR3020 personal wireless router in client mode. The TV fails to connect to the network. It sees the ethernet cable connected though. Here's my network topology: Here's what I've captured with Wireshark filtering for ARP (eth.type == 0x0806): It appears the TV fails to get the IP of the gateway (DSL modem/router) for some reason. One thing I've noticed is that the source MAC for the ARP requests coming from the TV is the MAC of the Portable wireless router (that is cd:89:00), not the TV itself and the modem sends the responses to that MAC (I'm not an expert and don't know if its okay or it may make the TV fail to get the requested IP). Also I'm able to ping the TV from the DSL router (through the telnet interface) and the router has an entry in its MAC table for the TV's IP with the Portable wireless router's MAC (that is cd:89:00). If I'm able to ping the TV I suppose it should know the router's MAC to respond to the ping, but then why these continuous ARP requests... I've also tried to connect my desktop trough this Portable wireless router the same way I'm trying to connect the TV and it works fine, I can set the DSL Modem's IP as the default gateway on the desktop's NIC and connect to the Internet. The TV can connect to the Internet when connected to the DSL Router with a wired connection. Any suggestions on what may be the cause of the problem / how to further debug it are welcome. Thanks!

  • Wireless not working - HP Probook 4540s

    - by Oguzhan
I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on 3 HP Probook 4540s's, and none of them seems to be able to connect to wireless networks. I have 1 Probook 4540s with Windows 7 installed and I can access wlan from it. I tried installing the necessary drivers from HP's website, but it still doesn't seem to be working. I've seen other people with different Probooks having similar problems, but their computers seem to be able to detect and even attempt to connect wlans, while mine doesn't even acknowledge that it has wireless. Any help would be appreciated. lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge DRAM Controller (rev 09) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge PCI Express Root Port (rev 09) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) 00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point USB xHCI Host Controller (rev 04) 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point MEI Controller #1 (rev 04) 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 04) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev c4) 00:1c.2 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 3 (rev c4) 00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 4 (rev c4) 00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 6 (rev c4) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 04) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation Panther Point LPC Controller (rev 04) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point 6 port SATA Controller [AHCI mode] (rev 04) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Thames [Radeon 7500M/7600M Series] 03:00.0 System peripheral: JMicron Technology Corp. My TP-LINK-8901 modem does not connect to internet with "always on" (automatic) connection. I have to put it in bridge mode and make a connection in Windows to connect to internet. Also, there is no configuration problem. What I did: Reset modem Update firmware Is there any way to solve the problem myself, e.g. through hardware or software? I can't have it repaired because the warranty already expired.

  • Ubuntu with KVM guest VM and broken bridges

    - by MadPsy
I have an Ubuntu box with a KVM guest VM running. They use bridging so the guest VM attaches to the physical network of its host. The guest VM has 2 NICs in 2 different bridges. First NIC of the VM is tap5 and is in bridge br0 br0 8000.46720f5c572e no eth0.500 tap5 Second NIC of the VM is tap2 and is in bridge br100 br100 8000.76ad2fc96661 no eth0.100 eth0.101 eth0.103 eth0.104 eth0.105 tap2 On the host, br0 has an IP and br100 does not 21: br0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UP link/ether 46:72:0f:5c:57:2e brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 192.168.100.4/24 brd 192.168.10.255 scope global br0 inet6 fe80::d6ae:52ff:febe:777/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever On the guest, its eth0 and eth1 interfaces both have IP addresses 2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000 link/ether 00:3e:61:fb:7a:da brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 192.168.100.6/24 brd 192.168.100.255 scope global eth0 inet6 fe80::23e:61ff:fefb:7ada/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever 3: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000 link/ether 00:3e:61:fb:7a:ea brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 172.16.50.129/25 brd 172.16.50.255 scope global eth1 inet6 fe80::23e:61ff:fefb:7aea/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever On the guest VM, a tcpdump of its eth1 interface (tap2) shows traffic from its eth0 interface (tap5), as if the 2 bridges are themselves bridged. I am at a complete loss! Thanks.

    - by Martin
I am running a dedicated server (located at Hetzner, Germany) that runs VirtualBox in order to virtualize several services accross multiple virtual guests. Those guests are supposed to communicate with each other (for instance, a virtual web server has to access a virtual database server); to be reachable from the dedicated server (for instance, SSH access); and to access the Internet via the dedicated server (for instance, to download security updates) Currently, this is achieved by having host-only adapter vboxnet0 on the dedicated server and two virtual interfaces on each guest. There, virtual adapter eth0 is attached to vboxnet0 (to achieve (1) and (2)), virtual adapter eth1 is attached to VirtualBox' NAT (to achieve (3)). Via eth0, the guests have access to a DHCP and a DNS server, both running on the dedicated server (there, bound to vboxnet0). This allows me to assign custom IP addresses and names. Via eth1, VirtualBox pushes a proper route that enables each guest to access the Internet (via eth0 on the dedicated server). This setup with two virtual adapters frequently leads to problems and at leasts complicates many things. For instance, on the dedicated server there is OpenVPN which allows to access the virtual machines via the Internet; futhermore, there is Shorwall that controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic between the Internet, the dedicated server, and the individual virtual machines. Not to mention automatic installation of servers via PXE... Therefore, I would prefer to have only one single virtual adapter on each guest which would be used for both incoming and outgoing connections. As far as I understand, one would basically use a bridged interface for that very purpose. Now the question arises: Which interface on the dedicated server would the bridge use? eth0 on the host server is not an option, as this is prohibited by the provider. A virtual interface eth0:0 would not make any sense, as a bridge always uses a physical interface (eth0 in this case). Would it be possible to create a bridged interface in each virtual machine that would "dangle in the air"? Thus, without a complement on the dedicated server? How would I have to set up the routing on the host server? Please note that the host / dedicated server has only one network adapter (eth0) which is connected to the provider's network. Regards, Martin

  • SAPPHIRE HD 7770 no audio on HDMI TV display

    - by zeroconf
I have SAPPHIRE HD 7770 and cannot get work audio over HDMI. http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1159&lid=1&pid=1452&leg=0 I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit version with all current updates. I tried at /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1" ... it didn't help. It's probably I use proprietary driver -this seems to be open source driver. I use the driver, what jockey-gtk (additional drivers) offered me: ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER <---- I installed that one ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER (post-release update) So - I installed the first one, because installing second version failed. Everything went fine but no sound at TV display by HDMI. Even Gnome sound mixer doesn't show HDMI choice. Using 32" Samsung B530 LCD TV - http://www.lcdbesttv.com/2010/02/samsung-b530-series-lcd-tv/ I have Asus P8Z77-M motherboard - http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z77M/ - there is also HDMI integrated. When I put HDMI cord to that plug, then even Gnome sound mixer showed HDMI audio but it didn't work. I have set from BIOS, that I use that SAPPHIRE HD 7770 from PCIe. • In 10.10, USB 3.0 PCI Express card recognized by lspci but not lsusb or dmesg. How to fix?

    - by Paul
Asus N PC, runs 10.10 x86_64 The Asus N comes with 4 usb 2.0 ports, each labelled 2.0 on the case. Attempting to add two usb 3.0 ports to be provided by a generic usb 3.0 pci express card installed in the pci expres slot. The new card says usb 3.0 and has the blue ports. The card is installed into the laptop unpowered, then the laptop is powered on and boots normally. Nothing happens when a USB 3.0 flash drive is inserted into the usb 3.0 port. uname -a Linux drpaulbrewer-N90SV 2.6.35.8 #1 SMP Fri Jan 14 15:54:11 EST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux lspci -v 00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 671MX Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. • Wireless Bridging between BTVoyager 2500V-8C and Belkin G+ Mimo Or D-link DSL-G604T

    - by Morgeh
Anyone got any ideas how to set up a wireless network bridge between the routers mentioned above? I have a router connected to the internet in one part of the house (BTVoyager) but the wireless range doesnt reach to the other end of the house :-( I also have two spare wireless routers(Belkin G+ Mimo and D-Link DSL-G604T) but as far as I can tell neither of them support wireless bridging.

I've been following all the OpenVPN Bridge tutorials I can, but I'm still missing something. Does anyone know of a super detailed tutorial\explanation of bridging? If anyone has bridging running, can I get a copy of your interfaces file to see how you've got it going. (Obviously change the ip address, just please change them consistently.)

  • Why should I use a switched network over routed?

    - by SRobertJames
Now that routers are affordable, why should I build a network using Layer 2 switches, which degenerate to broadcasting under poor conditions, and not just use real routing at Layer 3? Edit: Got some great replies. Let me clarify the question: Of course, at the lowest level, you want to plug your end nodes into a switch, not a router (as demonstrated by AlReece). I'm referring to switches which are used to bridge traffic between segments - that is, switches connected to other switches.
