  • How to make a video card use DVI output by default in text mode?

    I have an ASUS ENGT440/DI1GD5 video card which has three outputs: DVI, D-Sub and HDMI. I am using both D-Sub and DVI, but my main monitor is connected to the DVI output. Everything works fine except for the text mode. The card somehow uses the D-Sub output in text mode when both monitors are connected (when I disconnect the D-Sub output and leave only the primary monitor connected to the DVI output, it's being used correctly). How do I make the card use only the DVI output (or both) in text mode?

  • VM VirtualBox, Ubuntu 9.10: USB memory stick and SD card not detected...

    Hello Guys, I have installed Ubuntu9.10 on VM VirtualBox, on my HP laptop. My laptop has several USB ports and also a SD card port. Unfortunately, I'm unable to access both, my pen-drive on the USB port and my 8GB SD card inserted in the SD Card port. Can anyone suggest me what I should do for my Ubuntu to detect both of them? I have installed all latest updates on Ubuntu. I'm able to use my USB mouse. Thank you Vikram

  • Sound issues after trying everything

    I cannot get my sound working properly, no matter what I do, there's always some problem. It's very annoying as it's the only thing preventing me from making Ubuntu my main OS. At the moment my sound always plays through both my speakers and my headphones regardless except the sound through the headphones is crackly. It is also a bit quiet even though everything is maxed. I've managed to improve the situation to a point where the sound out of my speakers is perfect but I have none at all from my headphones. I do have two connectors listed in the sound settings but regardless of which one is selected it always plays through the speakers. I think this might have something to do with the fact that my speakers are plugging into the front of my computer, typically the headphone jack, and my headphones are plugging into the back but when I try disconnecting the speakers from the front there is still no sound from the headphones. I fixed the speaker sound by going through the sound settings and making sure they were all set to 100% then rebooting. Things I have tried: Maxing everything and unmuting everything in alsamixer Uninstalling pulseaudio Making gstreamer use only alsa via gstreamer-properties. This worked with the sound test button including independent sound between headphones and speakers but when I reset the computer it no longer worked. So I tried setting it manually in gconf-editor which didn't work either. Reinstalling alsa and pulseaudio Setting the model in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to 6stack and 6stack-dig neither worked.   • Is it possible to write a program that pipes the sound from one computer through the sound card of another?

    I have a case where I need to use one computer's sound card to play sound but I want the sound to be generated at another computer that's on the same network as the other. Ideally the program that does this would only run on the computer that was generating the sound, though I'm fairly certain that isn't possible based on the research I have been doing. What ever I do with it though the solution would need to be such that the computer actually playing the sound would be secure. Thanks for any input.

  • Desktop installation fails on Dell Precision T1600 with Nvidia Quadro card?

    I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on a Dell Precision T1600, however, I get a blank screen with only a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner (this is after the grey screen with the small Ubuntu logo at the bottom). If I remove the Nvidia Quadro 2000 card and plug a monitor into the built-in VGA port, then the installation works fine. Also, I've tried an Nvidia Quadro 2000D by PNY, but I get the same problem. Has anyone installed Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on a Dell Precision workstation?

If possible I would like a solution that allows me to keep using the software Me-TV, on both PCs. I bet that there is a solution to create a fake TV card on the 2nd PC. Let me explain: I do have the basic blueprint of the card in png file format. The script needs to drop in a member's name and birth day along with a serial. So far, no problem - there are plenty of good working PHP librarys out there. My problem is to ensure that the resulting pdf (the generated image of the card, to be precise) meets a certain resolution (preferably 300dpi), so that printing it would look right. Any ideas?   • Why does installing NVidia 9600GT graphics card, take 1GB of RAM away from Windows?

    Hi, I've changed graphics cards in my PC and now Windows 7 (32bit) is reporting that I have a whole gigabyte less physical RAM in my PC. Why is this? Firstly, the machine has 4GB of physical RAM. The old card was an ATI 2600XT with 256MB and the new card is an NVidia 9600GT with 512MB. With the ATI card windows sees 3326MB. With the NVidia card, windows sees 2558MB. I realise that due to address space restrictions I will not see all 4GB with 32bit windows, but why is there such a massive loss of RAM when simply changing cards (bearing in mind BOTH cards have their own RAM and borrow no main memory like some built on chipsets do). Would using 64 bit windows solve this? Thanks Nick.

  • Gentoo baselayout-2 problem with module parameters

    I recently switched to baselayout-2 on my Gentoo machine but I have one problem. I autoload a module bttv with paramater: card=77,77 The problem is that at boot the module is loaded without the parameter which makes the video feed useless.     We've got an HP ProLiant DL360 G5 running Windows Server 2008 R2 that needs a graphics card with 3D acceleration (the integrated ATI ES1000 graphics don't have this). This is an unfortunate requirement that we can't avoid, as it is required by S/W installed on the server that is beyond our control.     I enjoy my integrated graphics card Radeon HD 4200 at resolution of 1280x1024 pixels on a 19" inches LG Flatron (5:4 aspect ratio) (playing FIFA 10 at max resolution, max quality). But recently i decided to upgrade my monitor and to get an 24" inches BENQ, 1920x1080, fullHD. Would I experience any problems with that graphics card on a such a big monitor?     Is it possible to boot the Acer Aspire One PC from an SD card? I have bricked an Aspire One, but it does not even start the BIOS. Aspire One have this issue and a BIOS update usually work and it helped me once in the past, but this time it's all over, and the BIOS update fails. It still reads the SD card with the magic Ctrl + Esc shortcut used to launch the BIOS update. Can I trick the computer into booting somehow using this shortcut?
