    I am having a difficult time grasping what is the correct way to read the size of the files since each command gives you varying results. I also came across a post at http://forums.devshed.com/linux-help-33/du-and-ls-generating-inconsistent-file-sizes-42169.html which states the following; du gives you the size of the file as it resides on the file system. ( IE will will always give you a result that is divisible by 1024 ). ls will give you the actual size of the file. What you are looking at is the difference between the actual size of the file and the amount of space on disk it takes. ( also called file system efficiency ).   • Reducing Loading of Advertisers Scripts

    I have a website (http://dev2.liquor.com) that loads very quickly when I remove the advertisers and tracking scripts our partners give us. Of course we need to reduce page load time from 6 seconds to 1 second, and I see that it is 100% all of our external js files for partner tracking, ads, etc. I have been banging my head against the wall trying to find alternate ways to load/compress/serve the multidue of js the user needs to download. I can easily compress/minify mine, but someone else's that is not on our server is becoming hard to do so. The best I can do is get a C on YSlow, and each suggestion they give me pertains to my stupid tracking js scripts! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • You've been working on a platform for as long as you remember. Not anymore. How does it feel?

    How does it feel to work on a platform for as long as you remember, you've been encouraged to innovate, to improve and give all in day and night for that platform, be it either an operating system, a hardware architecture or a software framework/library and then be forced to switch bases because that platform has been abandoned over the night? It has happened before, many times, for eg. to SGI/IRIX and more recently to SUN/Open Solaris and now Nokia/Symbian. Have you been part of such a shift? If so then please share the story and describe your feelings at that time and if it is the case, how did you manage the situation? Reorientation? Giving up on the field and turned to other things you've been constantly putting aside like family? Many did so(for eg. people at Netscape). You may not think of it being such a big deal, but it is, after you've been working 10 to 20+ years on a platform/technology and then be faced to switch your expertise and mindset, the feeling tends to become really strong and some people really give up this crazy field and start enojoying a normal life. Would love to hear your stories.

  • Is it bad practice for a module to contain more information than it needs?

    I just wanted to ask for your opinion on a situation that occurs sometimes and which I don't know what would be the most elegant way to solve it. Here it goes: We have module A which reads an entry from a database and sends a request to module B containing ONLY the information from the entry module B would need to accomplish it's job (to keep modularity I just give it the information it needs - module B has nothing to do with the rest of the information from the read DB entry). Now after finishing it's job, module B has to reply to a module C if it succeeded or failed. To do this module B replies with the information it has gotten from module A and some variable meaning success or fail. Now here comes the problem: module C needs to find that entry again BUT the information it has gotten from module B is not enough to uniquely find the exact same entry again. I don't think that module A giving more information to module B which it doesn't need to do it's job but which it could then give back to module C would be a good practice because this would mean giving some module information it doesn't really need. What do you think?

  • Reporting Solution in PHP / CodeIgniter - Server side logic vs client side

    I'm building a report for an end user. They would like to see a list of all widgets... but then also like to see widgets with missing attributes, like missing names, or missing size. So i was thinking of creating one method that returns json data containing all widgets... and then using javascript to let them filter the data for missing data, instead of requerying the database. Ultimately, they need to be able to save all "reports" (filtered versions of data) inside a csv file. These are the two options I'm mulling over: Design 1 Create 3 separate methods in my controller/model like: get_all_data() get_records_with_missing_names() get_records_with_missing_size() And then when these methods are called, I would display the data on screen and give them a button to save to csv file. Design 2 Create one method called get_all_data() and then somehow, give them tools in the view to filter the json data using tables etc... and then letting them save subsets of the data. The reality is, in order to display all data, I still need to massage the data, and therefore, I know which records are missing attributes. So i'd rather not create separate methods by each filter. I'm not sure how I would do that just yet but at this point, i would like to know some pros/cons of each method. Thanks.

  • Getting More Performance out of a MacBook Pro

    So I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13". Integrated GPU so not a games machine but fast enough for doing .Net development in VMs. I love the little thing and wanted to give it a Christmas present so thought I'd mod it up a bit and give it a boost. I'm thinking of swapping out the stock 5400rpm HD with a faster hybrid drive (has 4GB RAM and spins at 7200rpm) but was wondering if any of you had tried or knew of anything else I could change/upgrade/mod to squeeze more out of my laptop. Before you answer though, please be aware that I'm not sure I can run to putting in the 8GB of RAM Apple have suggested :-( Thanks in advance.

    The South Korean government is in dire straits.  The national birth rate continues to decline and as the population grows older, there aren’t enough children being born to support the country long term.  The social issues of post Korean War are coming back to haunt the empowered nation.  Being torn apart by the Korean War (nicknamed the forgotten war in America) and with a nation facing starvation, South Korea allowed hundreds of thousands of their children to be adopted abroad.  This has created a problem of epidemic proportions, essentially devaluing life in Korea and child rearing. In an effort to encourage birth rates, the government encouraged their workers to go home early and procreate by turning off the lights in buildings.  Something unknown to me, was the illegalization of abortion except in special cases. According to the this article, http://joongangdaily.joins.com it’s working.  Abortions are down and women are being encouraged to give birth.  However the flip side is illegal risky abortions are on the rise, with potential back alley abortions looming.  But with a nation facing it’s potential implosion, it has to continue it’s efforts to encourage mothers to give birth. Many of the issues that America has faced is in stark contrast to South Korea.  Abortion has been a generally accepted procedure for some time.  If you’ll recall, I mentioned South Korea devalued their children.  But the nation’s problems lie so much deeper.  Being an Asian nation, saving “face” is an important aspect of life.  And being an unwed mother disgraces the family.  Living as a single mother in South Korea is a difficult life.  Most married mothers stay at home to take care of the children.  Being a shunned single mother that has a hard time getting a job (because you are a single mother) and affording child care isn’t like life in America. If we in the states suddenly faced a birthrate crisis, what would the U.S. government do?

  • How to reference or connect a variable to another class without stack overflow?

    I really need to re-arrange all my functions. I created a class. All my var, booleans, int, doubles and other things. I created every new variable so they can reference it and so they don't have an error. If your asking why I never just reference my main class vars to my sub-class becuase it will give me stack overflow! When in my main class i link my sub-class. subClass s = new subClass(); Then I reference my fake variable to my real variable for example: This is my sub-class variable(I call it fake) public int x = 0; In my main class, I put it like this: s.x = x; The problem is, it does not work! Maybe this is not the right place but I cant ask any questions on stack overflow because they banned me. If I connect my main class and connect my sub-class it will give me stack overflow. How do I stop it?

  • How can I get my monitor's maximum resolution without the proprietary AMD graphic driver installed?

    I am using Ubuntu 14.04. I have an AMD Radeon 5570 HD graphic card. Actually, the default open source REDWOOD drivers aren't allowing me to choose my monitor's maximum screen resolution(which is 1366 x 768). I just have two resolutions displayed which are 1024x768 and 800x600 . If I give the command : xrandr -s 1366x768 then the output is: Size 1366x768 not found in available modes So just for the sake of getting 1366x768 resolution I am forced to install the proprietary graphic driver that AMD gives me from its site. But if I install it(which itself is quite a problem-prone process), I undergo a lot of 'inconvenience'. Sometimes after an OS update, the driver crashes unity. Then I will have to uninstall that driver from a tty and google around for a solution. Also I encounter screen tearing problems occasionally. In addition I also cant see my login screen(See this question which states this particular problem). The main problem is AMD does not update its driver as quick as Ubuntu updates its OS. This is quite irritating. So, I want the maximum resolution(and performance) that my graphics card and monitor can give me without installing the 'problematic' proprietary graphic card driver that AMD gives. Is this possible? Suggestions please. Thanks in advance.     Traditionally, my programs do their work in the background and when I do have to make an interface for some reason, they often do not need to be complex which means I can use a simple Windows Forms or console application. But lets be honest-- Windows Forms? That is so ... ancient! Instead I have been looking at Windows 8. A new interface, different, maybe better-- but fun to give a try. Which means XAML. Now, XAML isn't all that hard in concept. Panel here, button there-- A smattering of XML. My question in short: Where can I find resources that teach me how to write good XAML code for Windows 8 applications? The long version: How do I combine XAML constructs to achieve effects? Horizontal panels with multiple sections you can scroll through with your finger, the proper way? How should you use default style resources Windows 8 might give you by default? How do I properly create a panel with user info on the right? Left aligned stackpanels with embedded dockpanels? Yes? No? Why?

  • can I achieve my dreams without a degree? [closed]

    It's really giving me a lot stress as my parents saying me to join college but I don't want. I know I can learn all programming by self studying but they keep saying join college otherwise no one will give you job. I always think positive but sometimes I also start thinking like them (what if my life will be spoiled if I do not go to college) There are so much things on internet. I can learn c++, objective c, java, AI, html, php all through internet (at least I think that I can learn whole by self studying and I can give 10 hour/day easily for studying) and I will keep practicing and become a good programmer in 2 years and then try to do some job for experience so no need to waste 4 years just for studying things which I can learn in 2 years and no need to waste money on college because they teach physics, chemistry all in first 2 years and I only want to study comp. Science. But now again I am thinking negative that what will happen if I do not get degree and what will I do after learning programming if I don't get job? Please suggest what should I do? Should I join college? or self study? Can I achieve my dreams without a degree if I study hard and learn many things? I have full confidence that I can self teach myself better than they will teach in college. I will open my app company and many more. But maybe I am over confident because I don't know what happens in real world. How they treat a person without degree, etc. Anyone of you had gone through this condition? What did you do?

  • Is The Ease Of Windows Phone Development Ruining Its Image

    I was reading an article on Mashable recently by a long time iPhone user who is living solely on a Lumia 920 at the moment and giving her assessment.  One thing that struck a nerve with me was her describing the Windows Phone ecosystem as immature.  She wasn’t saying this because of the number of apps or the big names like most people do.  She means the quality of the apps in the store. This hit a nerve with me.  I find it hard to believe that the majority of app on iOS are of any higher quality than any other platform.  I believe in any ecosystem you are going to find some high end, high quality apps, but the majority by default will be from people who are trying to solve a problem but do not have the resources to have top graphics and full blown testing.  There will also be a large number that are just there trying to trick you into giving up some cash. Does any of the mean that we shouldn’t take notice of this complaint?  Of course not!  We should always strive to publish the best quality apps possible.  Don’t do things like leaving default app icons and backgrounds.  Put a little effort into your design.  You should also spend as much time as possible ensuring against crashes and giving the user the best experience possible.  Think through your apps organization and navigation.  Go the extra step of putting it into beta and letting select people use it and give you feedback before going to full release.     Hey, I just got onto a new project with the student government at my University and we're trying to get our webserver into a more workable state. The current problem is that all of us for some reason have sudo power on the server, but we can't write/create files anywhere on the server (as far as we can tell) currently. Our groups are currently as follows: /srv/ice/db$ groups goshri sshamim rmenezes goshri : goshri sshamim : sshamim ptx rmenezes : rmenezes ptx daifotis : daifotis ptx We added a few of us to ptx because we thought that might give us write access but it didn't. We have a bunch of webapps running on this server but since it's university things change hands quickly. What can we do to give us read access?

  • Quitting a small start-up where you are a primary developer?

    Just curious to hear from other people who may have been in similar situations. I work for a small startup (very small) where I am the main developer for a major part of the app they are building, the other dev they have does a different area of work than I do so couldn't take over my part. I've been with the company 5 months, or so, but I am looking at going to a more stable company soon because its just getting to be too much stress, overtime, pressure, etc for too little benefit and I miss working with other developers who can help out on a project. The guy is happy with my work and I think I've helped them get pretty far but I've realized I just don't like being this much "on the edge" as its hard to tell what the direction of the company is going to be since its so new. Also, even though I'm the main dev for the project, I would still only consider myself a mid-level dev and am selling myself as such for the new job search. Just to add more detail, I'm not a partner or anything in the company and this was never discussed, so I just work on a W2 (with no benefits of course). I work at home so that makes it easier to leave, I guess, but I don't want to just screw the guy over but also don't want to be tied in for too long. Obviously I would plan to give 2 weeks notice at least, but should I give more? How should I bring up the subject because I know its going to be a touchy thing to bring up. Any advice is appreciated UPDATE: Thanks everyone for posting on this, I have now just completed the process of accepting an offer with a larger company and quitting the startup. I have given 2 weeks notice and have offered to make myself available after that if needed, basically its a really small company at this point so it would only be 1 dev that I would have to deal with... anyways, it looks like it may work out well as far as me maintaining a good relationship with the founder for future work together, I made it out to be more of a personal / lifestyle issue than about their flaws / shortcomings which definitely seems to help in leaving on a good note

  • network path not found error on creating schtasks

    I am getting "ERROR: Network path was not found" when I try to create a scheduled task on my local machine. I am using this command at the command prompt: schtasks /tn taskname /tr taskpath /sc minute /mo 20 /sd 09/23/2010 /s \\%computername% /u username /p password When I give the above command without computername, username and password the task gets created perfectly fine. What am I doing wrong?? EDIT : I got it working by using the below command. I do not understand why it is working becuase I am using /ru and /rp which are remote user and remote password settings whereas I am executing the command on my local machine. And I had to give double quotes to computername. schtasks /tn taskname /tr taskpath /sc minute /mo 20 /sd 09/23/2010 /s "%computername%" /ru username /rp password

  • Subversion 1.7.x and expat location in configure

    I am running CentOS 6.3 64bit and DirectAdmin control panel. Currently I have installed Apache Subversion 1.6.19 without any problems. I have installed expat and expat-devel and neon-devel using yum. When installing Apache Subversion 1.6.19 this configure command works fine: ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-ssl --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-apr=/usr/bin/apr-config However when installing Apache Subversion 1.7.7 using the same configure command as above, I get this error after doing commmand "make": /etc/httpd/lib/libaprutil-1.so: undefined reference to `XML_StopParser' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [subversion/svnadmin/svnadmin] Error 1 However I found out I can solve that problem by adding this into the configure command: --with-expat=includes:lib_search_dirs:libs So it then looks like this: ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-ssl --with-expat=includes:lib_search_dirs:libs --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-apr=/usr/bin/apr-config However that configure command then give this warning: configure: WARNING: Expat found amongst libraries used by APR-Util, but Subversion libraries might be needlessly linked against additional unused libraries. It can be avoided by specifying exact location of Expat in argument of --with-expat option. So I want to solve that. I have experimentet alot, but not been able to figure out how to "specifying exact location of Expat" in configure command, and how to find out what the location should be? However after a lot of searching I found this: http://subversion.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=3997 - that is a FreeBSD user saying this: Building Subversion 1.7.x on FreeBSD currently requires a configure flag: --with-expat=/usr/local/include:/usr/local/lib:expat As that is the default location of expat on that platform, it would be nice if configure detected it automatically. However I am not using FreeBSD, I am running CentOS 6.3 64bit. Also remember I said I have installed expat and expat-devel and neon-devel using yum. However I tried to use the expat/command path posted by the FreeBSD user, and it seems to work, it does not give errors when running configure command, and does not give errors when running "make". This is what I used then: ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-ssl --with-expat=/usr/local/include:/usr/local/lib:expat --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --with-apr=/usr/bin/apr-config But this server is a production server, and therfor I need your help to advice if this is also correct to run on a CentOS server? Is the following path in expat command correct on CentOS?: --with-expat=/usr/local/include:/usr/local/lib:expat If not, please advice what it should be changed to.   • Error connecting ESX 5.0.0 to domain

    I am trying to connect an ESX 5.0.0 to our Domain Controler, in order to give a Domain group specific roles security. But I do not see any groups after the host connects to the domain. Under Configuration - Authentication Services - I connected the host to the domain: I created the role I wanted, with the selected approved features But when I want to add a permission to a set of VM's, I can not see "my domain" on the drop down, only the: "localhost" How do I see "my domain" on the Domain drop down - so I can select the domain group to give the role to? To note: I followed the instructions to connect to the domain form VMware site.
