  • Which server software and configuration to retrieve from multiple POP servers, routing by address to correct user

    I am setting up a small email server on a Debian machine, which needs to pick up mail from a variety of POP servers and figure out who to send it to from the address, but I'm not clear what software will do what I need, although it seems like a very simple question! For example, I have 2 users, Alice and Bob. Any email to [email protected] ([email protected] etc) should go to Alice, all other mail to domain.example.com should go to Bob. Any email to [email protected] should go to Bob, and [email protected] should go to Alice Anything to *@bobs.place.com should go to Bob And so on... The idea is to pull together a load of mail addresses that have built up over the years and present them all as a single mailbox for Bob and another one for Alice. I'm expecting something like Postfix + Dovecot + Amavis + Spamassassin + Squirrelmail to fit the bill, but I'm not sure where the above comes in, can Postfix deal with it as a set of defined regular expressions, or is it a job for Amavis, or something else entirely? Do I need fetchmail in this mix, or is its role now included in one of the other components above. I think of it as content-filtering, but everything I read about content-filtering is focussed on detecting spam rather than routing email.

  • Dreamhost DNS CNAMEs work at my house, not for anyone else

    I have my domain BQQKSHELF.COM that I bought through Dreamhost. I set up a CNAME so that zach.bqqkshelf.com points to my app at zach.heroku.com. The app at Heroku is working fine. Everyone can agree on that. When I go to zach.bqqkshelf.com, everything seems to work okay too. When I ask my roommate to go to it, it works. When I go to it on my iTouch, it works. When I IM my friends and ask them to go to zach.bqqkshelf.com, they get a time out error. How is this possible?

  • Suddenly blocked from a site

    Suddenly from a time to now I haven't been able to go to a site I used to go frequently for maintenance (Wordpress). I tried different browsers, restarting my laptop, clearing cache, history, cookies. Also did a ping to the site ip, go 4 packets send and 4 lost. This is a problem I think with only my laptop, since I've been able to go into the site from other devices in the same network. I have also tried connecting to the same site from a completely different network with the same problem. I really don't know what to do about this, any advices? PS: site hosted in wp engine if that has anything to do with this problem.

  • Redirect to ADFS login

    My company has switched to Office 365 and we like it, but we would really like for the ADFS single sign on to be more simplified. We have to go to login.microsoftonline.com then type in the username, then you have to click the link that appears at the bottom. Then you have to type in your username again and password. So we have come up with the idea that we could just redirect everyone to this page, but after lots of research into this, it seems like it's not possible to do a DNS redirect to a path. Does anyone know any other type of redirect that we could try? I'm thinking about trying to see if I can have a DNS entry go to our TMG and then have the TMG redirect to a path. But I'm not sure how the ADFS server knows where to go after that, so it might just log us in and not go anywhere. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Quick way to bypass proxy with DownThemAll

    I've been using an SSH proxy to my home network to encrypt my internet surfing, which is fine. But the connection is much slower than the direct one, and when I'm downloading large files I'd rather go around the proxy. Currently, I send it to Downthemall, go to FoxyProxy and disable the proxy, cancel and resume the download, then when it's started go back to FoxyProxy and re-enable it. Is there any way I can just get DownThemAll stuff to skip the foxyproxy?

  • Sending mails via Mutt and Gmail: Duplicates

    I'm trying to setup mutt wiht gmail for the first time. It seems to work pretty well, however when I send a mail from Mutt i appears twice in Gmail's sent folder.   • openvpn and selective routing

    hi everyone, whats the best way to configure openvpn clients to go selectively go about using an openvpn connection? i want to setup a vpn server for friends in china, but i dont want them to use it for everything, just so they can access sites like youtube, facebook, cnn, etc. while they are in china through the vpn (these are blocked). it would be nice if the vpn was a backup, so for instance if they are trying to go to facebook (which is blocked), it would go through the vpn connection once finding that the normal connection does not work. this would save a lot of bandwidth cost actually, and give them a better browsing experience. is this a iptable route thing? or a dns server that i push to my clients?

  • SQL SERVER – Fix – Agent Starting Error 15281 – SQL Server blocked access to procedure ‘dbo.sp_get_sqlagent_properties’ of component ‘Agent XPs’ because this component is turned off as part of the security configuration for this server

    SQL Server Agent fails to start because of the error 15281 is a very common error. When you start to restart SQL Agent sometimes it will give following error. SQL Server blocked access to procedure ‘dbo.sp_get_sqlagent_properties’ of component ‘Agent XPs’ because this component is turned off as part of the security configuration for this server. A system administrator can enable the use of ‘Agent XPs’ by using sp_configure. For more information about enabling ‘Agent XPs’, search for ‘Agent XPs’ in SQL Server Books Online. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15281) To resolve this error, following script has to be executed on the server. sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1; GO RECONFIGURE; GO sp_configure 'Agent XPs', 1; GO RECONFIGURE GO When you run above script, it will give a very similar output as following on the screen. Now, if you try to restart SQL Agent it will just work fine. That’s it! Sometimes there is a simpler solution to complicated error.   • How many different servers are needed to keep a website running with no downtime? [closed]

    Machines go down. It's a fact of life. They may need to be rebooted for some reason, or they may have a hardware failure, or a power outage. So if I wanted to deploy a website with a server backed by a SQL database, putting the whole thing on one server wouldn't be good enough. It obviously needs at least two servers, so that if one goes down, the other can pick up the slack until the first comes back up. Of course, if I have the server software on two machines, either one of which could go down, I can't place the database on either of those two machines, because it could go down. So the database needs its own server. But that server can go down, so I need a backup database server and some sort of replication system to keep it in sync so the main can fail-over to it. So far, that's a bare minimum of 4 machines to keep one website running with a reasonable chance of no downtime. (Assuming no catastrophic events take place that take down both front-end servers at once or both DB servers at once, and no hacks, DDOS attacks, etc. Am I missing any other factors, or should I consider 4 servers to be the minimum for running a website with a goal of continuing operation without downtime even when a server goes down?

  • SQL SERVER – Disk Space Monitoring – Detecting Low Disk Space on Server

    A very common question I often receive is how to detect if the disk space is running low on SQL Server. There are two different ways to do the same. I personally prefer method 2 as that is very easy to use and I can use it creatively along with database name. Method 1: EXEC MASTER..xp_fixeddrives GO Above query will return us two columns, drive name and MB free. If we want to use this data in our query, we will have to create a temporary table and insert the data from this stored procedure into the temporary table and use it. Method 2: SELECT DISTINCT dovs.logical_volume_name AS LogicalName, dovs.volume_mount_point AS Drive, CONVERT(INT,dovs.available_bytes/1048576.0) AS FreeSpaceInMB FROM sys.master_files mf CROSS APPLY sys.dm_os_volume_stats(mf.database_id, mf.FILE_ID) dovs ORDER BY FreeSpaceInMB ASC GO The above query will give us three columns: drive logical name, drive letter and free space in MB. We can further modify above query to also include database name in the query as well. SELECT DISTINCT DB_NAME(dovs.database_id) DBName, dovs.logical_volume_name AS LogicalName, dovs.volume_mount_point AS Drive, CONVERT(INT,dovs.available_bytes/1048576.0) AS FreeSpaceInMB FROM sys.master_files mf CROSS APPLY sys.dm_os_volume_stats(mf.database_id, mf.FILE_ID) dovs ORDER BY FreeSpaceInMB ASC GO This will give us additional data about which database is placed on which drive. If you see a database name multiple times, it is because your database has multiple files and they are on different drives. You can modify above query one more time to even include the details of actual file location. SELECT DISTINCT DB_NAME(dovs.database_id) DBName, mf.physical_name PhysicalFileLocation, dovs.logical_volume_name AS LogicalName, dovs.volume_mount_point AS Drive, CONVERT(INT,dovs.available_bytes/1048576.0) AS FreeSpaceInMB FROM sys.master_files mf CROSS APPLY sys.dm_os_volume_stats(mf.database_id, mf.FILE_ID) dovs ORDER BY FreeSpaceInMB ASC GO The above query will now additionally include the physical file location as well. As I mentioned earlier, I prefer method 2 as I can creatively use it as per the business need. Let me know which method are you using in your production server.     Yesterday I posted blog post on the subject SQL SERVER – 2011 – Introduction to SEQUENCE – Simple Example of SEQUENCE and I received comment where user was not clear about difference between SEQUENCE and IDENTITY. The reality is that SEQUENCE not like IDENTITY. There is very clear difference between them. Identity is about single column. Sequence is always incrementing and it is not dependent on any table. Here is the quick example of the same.   • SQL SERVER – Removing Leading Zeros From Column in Table – Part 2

    Earlier I wrote a blog post about Remvoing Leading Zeros from Column In Table. It was a great co-incident that my friend Madhivanan (no need of introduction for him) also post a similar article over on BeyondRelational.com. I strongly suggest to read his blog as well as he has suggested some cool solutions to the same problem. On original blog post asked two questions 1) if my sample for testing is correct and 2) If there is any better method to achieve the same. The response was amazing. I am proud on our SQL Community that we all keep on improving on each other’s contribution. There are some really good suggestions as a comment. Let us go over them right now. Improving the ResultSet I had missed including all zeros in my sample set which was an overlook. Here is the new sample which includes all zero values as well. So I was thinking, would it be possible to let non-sysadmin users query DMVs on a SQL server but stop them querying this I/O intensive DMV ? Yes it is, here’s how… 1. Create a new login for test purposes, with permissions to access AdventureWorks database only … CREATE LOGIN [test] WITH PASSWORD='xxxx', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[AdventureWorks] GO USE [AdventureWorks] GO CREATE USER [test] FOR LOGIN [test] WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo] GO 2.login as user test and issue command SELECT  * FROM sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats(DB_ID('AdventureWorks'),NULL,NULL,NULL,'DETAILED') gets error :-  Msg 297, Level 16, State 12, Line 1 The user does not have permission to perform this action. 3.As a sysadmin, issue command :- USE AdventureWorks GRANT VIEW DATABASE STATE TO [test] or GRANT VIEW SERVER STATE TO [test] if all databases can be queried via DMV. 4.   • CPanel - Wild card SSL - How to point *.domain.com to one root and sub.domain.com to another root

    I have a wildcard (*.domain.com) SSL certificate installed on my CPanel server. I have domain.com configured to point to /domain.com as its document root and use this wildcard SSL certificate. I also have sub.domain.com configured to point to /sub.domain.com as its document root. Btw, I have not explicitly configured configured sub.domain.com to use the wildcard SSL certificate. When I go to "http://sub.domain.com" it goes to the correct document root, however my problem is that when I go to "https://sub.domain.com" it goes to the incorrect root, it goes to the root configured for the wildcard SSL. I've been trying to find information on how to go about configuring sub.domain.com to use the SSL certificate and go to the correct document root, however, so far I haven't found anything concrete. Do I use the same steps that I used for configuring the certificate for domain.com, but use the same certificate again and specify dev.domain.com as the domain that this certificate is for (instead of *.domain.com)? Or is there something else I should be doing? This is a production server, so I don't want to play around too much. I'm hoping to find the correct information before proceeding.

  • SQL SERVER – DMV sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object – Describes the First Result Metadata for the Module

    Here is another interesting follow up blog post of SQL SERVER – sp_describe_first_result_set New System Stored Procedure in SQL Server 2012. While I was writing earlier blog post I had come across DMV sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object as well. I found that SQL Server 2012 is providing all this quick and new features which quite often we miss  to learn it and when in future someone demonstrates the same to us, we express our surprise on the subject. DMV sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object returns result set which describes the columns used in the stored procedure. Here is the quick example. Let us first create stored procedure. USE [AdventureWorks] GO ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[CompSP] AS SELECT [DepartmentID] id ,[Name] n ,[GroupName] gn FROM [HumanResources].[Department] GO Now let us run following two DMV which gives us meta data description of the stored procedure passed as a parameter. Option1: Pass second parameter @include_browse_information as a 0. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object ( OBJECT_ID('[dbo].[CompSP]'),0) AS Table1 GO Option2: Pass second parameter @include_browse_information as a 1. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object ( OBJECT_ID('[dbo].[CompSP]'),1) AS Table1 GO Here is the result of Option1 and Option2. If you see the result, there is absolutely no difference between the results. Both of the resultset are returning column names which are aliased in the stored procedure. Let us scroll on the right side and you will notice that there is clear difference in some columns. You will see in second resultset source_database, Source_schema as well few other columns are reporting original table instead of NULL values. When @include_browse_information result is set to 1 it will provide the columns details of the underlying table. I have just discovered this DMV, I have yet to use it in production code and find out where exactly I will use this DMV. Do you have any idea? Does any thing comes up to your mind where this DMV can be helpful.   • SQL SERVER – Introduction to PERCENT_RANK() – Analytic Functions Introduced in SQL Server 2012

    SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical functions PERCENT_RANK(). This function returns relative standing of a value within a query result set or partition. It will be very difficult to explain this in words so I’d like to attempt to explain its function through a brief example. Instead of creating a new table, I will be using the AdventureWorks sample database as most developers use that for experiment purposes. Now let’s have fun following query: USE AdventureWorks GO SELECT SalesOrderID, OrderQty, RANK() OVER(ORDER BY SalesOrderID) Rnk, PERCENT_RANK() OVER(ORDER BY SalesOrderID) AS PctDist FROM Sales.SalesOrderDetail WHERE SalesOrderID IN (43670, 43669, 43667, 43663) ORDER BY PctDist DESC GO The above query will give us the following result: Now let us understand the resultset. You will notice that I have also included the RANK() function along with this query. The reason to include RANK() function was as this query is infect uses RANK function and find the relative standing of the query. The formula to find PERCENT_RANK() is as following: PERCENT_RANK() = (RANK() – 1) / (Total Rows – 1) If you want to read more about this function read here.     Most of developer love Firefox for their plugin who support for making development easier and faster. many of us use Firefox nightly build aka minefield who update daily. there is a little problem in minefield that there is less plugin on addons site of mozilla for Firefox nightly [minefield]. a solution for this problem is that you need to install the plugin who you want in nightly build from the developer site instead of add-ons site of Mozilla. the reason for that is all many of popular plugin in development for support Firefox 4. How to install follow the thing as mine : go to minefield > addons or toolbar  > addons you see a list of plugin who is not suitable for minefield now go to more link of plugin who you want to get work in Firefox 4. When you click their you go to plugin page on addons site of mozilla or maybe redirect you to developer site. if they show you plugin page then go to developer site by click on link more about developer. now you find that on the developer site they give you the same version or maybe new then you found on mozilla addons site. install the plugin and restart the minefield. you see that most of plugin now work.

    Before I create views, I generally work out what I want to retrieve in my SELECT statement ahead of time so I'll just  have to cut and  paste the query. The example below is done  in T-SQL/Sybase format, however for Oracle and MySQL, just  place a semi-colon ';' at the end of your statement and remove the  'GO' command.          To drop (delete) an existing view: DROP VIEW vw_rpt_metroBestCustomers GO To create a view: CREATE VIEW vw_rpt_metroBestCustomers ( CustomerName,    OfficeNum,    City,    StateOrProv,    Country,    ZipCode   ) AS SELECT a.FirstName + ', ' + a.LastName,           b.OfficePhoneNum,           c.City,           c.StateOrProvAbbr,           c.Country,           c.PostalCode     FROM Customer a,          CustLocAssoc x,          CustContactAssoc y,          Location c,          Contact b     WHERE a.CustID = x.CustID       AND a.CustID = y.CustID       AND y.ContactID = b.ContactID       AND x.LocID = c.LocID       AND a.LoyaltyMedian > 85.5 GO        I frequently rename columns when developing views to makeit easier for simple, text-based reporting--however, renamingthe columns isn't necessary.The create view statement above could have been writtenas follows:CREATE VIEW vw_rpt_metroBestCustomersAS (SELECT a.FirstName + ', ' + a.LastName, b.OfficePhoneNum, c.City, c.StateOrProvAbbr, c.Country, c.PostalCode FROM Customer a, CustLocAssoc x, CustContactAssoc y, Location c, Contact b WHERE a.CustID = x.CustID AND a.CustID = y.CustID AND y.ContactID = b.ContactID AND x.LocID = c.LocID AND a.LoyaltyMedian > 85.5 )GO

  • SQL SERVER – ERROR – FIX – Msg 3702, Level 16, State 3, Line 1 Cannot drop database “MyDBName” because it is currently in use

    I often go to do various seminars and presentations at various organizations. During presentations I often create and drop various databases for demonstrations purpose. Recently in one of the presentations, I tried to remove my recently created database, I got following error. Msg 3702, Level 16, State 3, Line 1 Cannot drop database “MyDBName” because it is currently in use. The reason was very simple as my database was in use by another session or window. I had option that I should go and find open session and close it right away; later followed by dropping the database. As I was in rush I quickly wrote down following code and I was able to successfully drop the database. USE MASTER GO ALTER DATABASE MyDBName SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE; DROP DATABASE MyDBName GO Please note that I am doing all this on my demonstrations, do not run above code on production without proper approvals and supervisions.
