• Apache file caching

  How does apache handle caching of certain files, and is it possible to explicitly say that certain files should be aggressively cached more than others, through the standard config files for a given host or virtualhost? To put it in context, I keep a lot of site content in various XML files, and I'd like to be able to say that this file will be used a lot, and therefore cache it as much as possible..? Does apache do this kind of thing intelligently and on the fly..? Will it observe which files are more popular than others and try to match cache hits appropriately..? Lots of questions in one, but the basic idea should be clear enough. edit: to be clear, these are resource files which are loaded and interpreted by PHP - but php as a process is spawned inside apache.. right? Please help!

• Table naming convention?

  In our manufacturing shop, each Employee hits the time clock every time they change Jobs or Machines (work centers) during their work day. Each record created in the Time Clock app has foreign keys that link the record to: the Employee, the Job, and the Machine which they are about to operate. I’m trying to determine the best name for this table… If I were tempted to call it ClockRecords or TimeClockRecords, why wouldn’t I also consider naming it JobTimeRecords, or why not MachineTimeRecords. Any ideas on a good name?

• iOS - Losing in-app subscription?

  I've just built an iOS app that uses a non-reoccuring subscription model. You hit "buy" and then when the client device receives the receipt from the Apple server it whizzes it off to my server to validate it and add the subscription to my user database. If the connection fails before my server has responded then the request is cached, ready to be resent the next time the client comes online. My problem is, what happens if the connection fails between when the user hits the buy button and the receipt is received by the client from Apple? Theres no way for it to know that the purchase has been made? Presumably I should add a "restore purchases" button that sends all of the users receipts to my server which checks if they've already been validated and their respective subscriptions added to the database? Is there a less intrusive way of doing this?

• Force freeing memory in PHP

  Hi everybody, in a PHP program, I sequentially read a bunch of files (with file_get_contents), gzdecode them, json_decode the result, analyze the contents, throw the most of it away, and store about 1% in an array. Unfortunately, with each iteration (I traverse over an array containing the filenames), there seems to be some memory lost (according to memory_get_peak_usage, about 2-10 MB each time). I have double- and triplechecked my code, I am not storing unneded data in the loop (and the needed data hardly exceeds about 10MB overall), but I am frequently rewriting (actually, strings in an array). Apparently, PHP does not free the memory correctly, thus using more and more RAM until it hits the limit. Is there any way to do a forced garbage collection? Or, at least, to find out where the memory is used? Thanks in advance, Dmitri

• Good ACL implementation in Java

  Hi All. I'm implementing a web based document management system and I'd like to implement ACLs in my system. My formal requirements are hierarchal permissions (documents inherit permissions from their folders) user groups (users can dynamically create groups and associate users with groups). Such groups can have permissions on objects in the system. My code will query permission on objects in two cases: 1. Manipulating a single document 2. Listing all documents where a manipulation is possible The latter requirement seems the achilles heel for Spring Security ACLs (their method seems likely to incur multiple DB hits for each document I manage) Anyone know of another ACL implementation?   A while ago I worked on a MS-SQL project and I remember a "IS IN" thing. I tried it on a MySQL project and it did not work. Is there an equivalent? Workaround? How would you achieve that with MySQL (while trying to be efficient)?

• Android GPS app not closing connection

  Hi there, Fairly new to Android, so just trying to work out: I have a simple Maps app that plots a couple of locations. It's a demo for a potentially bigger app later. The one thing I would like to do is make it exit correctly. I want to assume that when a user hits the "Home" or "Back" button on the phone, that they have exited the app. I want when this has happened for the GPS process to shut down. I can't seem to find any examples of how to do this correctly. I have an onDestroy() subclass with a super.onDestroy() method but this doesn't seem to cut it. I've tested on my phone and while everything else seems to work fine, this is bugging me. I keep seeing the GPS icon in the notifications bar. To give you an example, this doesn't happen when you leave GoogleMaps. Anyone any ideas or know what I'm missing? T

  I've been trying to learn Action Script 3 the past few weeks, making tiny interactive games to learn the basics. I stumble upon a problem every now and then but most of the times google helps me out. But this problem has got me stuck so please help: The main stage contains two objects(movieclips), the player and a wall. The player has got his own code so when I drag in the player object I don't have to write any code into the main stage to be able to move the player. This all worked pretty well and I now wanted to add the wall so the player actually has something to bounce into. Now here is the problem, I want to check if the player touches the wall, I've done this before but that was when I used the main stage as my coding playground instead of putting the code in movieclips. How can I check if the player hits the wall within the movement code of the player object?

• How can I lock the cursor to the inside of a window on Linux?

  I'm trying to put together a game for Linux which involves a lot of fast action and flinging around of the mouse cursor. If the user wants to play in windowed mode, I'd quite like to lock the cursor to the inside of the window to avoid accidentally changing programs in the heat of battle (obviously this will cancel itself if the user changes programs or hits escape for the pause menu.) On Windows, this can be accomplished easily with ClipCursor(). I can't find an equivalent on Linux. Is there one? I plan to do this in pure X code, but obviously if anyone knows of a way to do this in any Linux windowing library then I can just read the source code and figure out how to duplicate it in X.

• Efficient job progress update in web application

  Hi, Creating a web application (Django in my case, but I think the question is more general) that is administrating a cluster of workers doing queued jobs, there is a need to track each jobs progress. When I've done it using database UPDATE (PostgreSQL in this case), it severely hits the database performance, because each UPDATE creates a new row in a table, and in my case only vacuuming DB removes obsolete rows. Having 30 jobs running and reporting progress every 1 minute DB may require vacuuming (and it means huge slow downs on a front end side for all the employees working with the system) every 10 days. Because the progress information isn't critical, ie. it doesn't have to be persistent, how would you do the progress updates from jobs without using an overhead database implies? There are 30 worker servers, each doing 1 or 2 jobs simultaneously, 1 front end server which serves a web application to users, and 1 database server.

• How to ignore an exception and continue processing a foreach loop?

  I have a test program that is supposed to loop over all the files under C:. It dies when it hits the "Documents and Settings" folder. I'd like to ignore the error and keep looping over the remaining files. The problem is that the exception is thrown in the foreach, so putting a try/catch around the foreach will cause the loop to exit. And putting a try/catch after the foreach never fires (because the exception is thrown in the foreach). Is there any way to ignore the exception and continue processing the loop? • Calling Javascript after linking to another page

  I am doing an integration with a support system (Helpstream) and I am currently working on doing some in-app context sensitive help. I have put in a link that will send the user to a section of Helpstream that will allow them to ask a question. Problem is, there are buttons on the page that call Javascript that will bring up a lightbox where the user fills out a form to submit a question. What I need to do is have that form come up after the user goes through the link, so essentially run the Javascript once the user hits the page. The call that I have to implement is NewTopic.CreateNew({type:"Question"}) Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are there performance hits, and if so, how drastic? Do performance degradations stack as I nest deeper? Are there any other issues I should be aware of when using this structure? I care about every little bit of performance because it's a library for realtime graphics, so I'm taking any overhead very seriously.

  Hello, I'm making a hit counter. I have a database and I store the IP and $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; of the visitors. Now I need to add a filter, so I can put away the hits, that are made by bots. I found out, that many bots usually keep some common words in the $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; , so I's like to make and array of words, that would keep the bot from displaying in the results. Here is what I have now: while($row = mysql_fetch_array($yesterday, MYSQL_ASSOC)) { <-- Here I need a code, that would run through an array and check, if it containts the keywords and if it doesn't ... just count++; -- } Also if you know any other way of detecting and removing the bots from the results, I'd be verry thankful. • What is an appropriate way to programmatically exit an application?

  I am evaluating user inputs as commands for my application. If the user presses Q, or q, and then hits enter, the application quits and execution terminates. Is there a proper context, or best practices on how to do that? I do not have any resources to release, or anything like that. Should I just use System.exit(0);? Is there a recommended way to do that? • jquery: nested tags and hover() not working in IE

  hello folks! i have a construction like this: <div id="container"> <span> <span></span> </span> <span> <span></span> </span> </div> i need to catch the mouseout event of the container, so i made jquery do this: $("#container").hover('',function(){ alert("Out"); }); In Firefox / Opera, it only fires the mouseout-function when leaving the div (how I want it). In IE it fires the mouseout-function at every -Tag inside of the div the mouse hits. (maybe important is, that the span tags have also mouseover and out events) Anyone has an idea how to solve this? (The nested structure cant be changed because a complex layout) thx4 any ideas!

  In general, should one design in order to place processing load on client-side? More specifically, a search engine to locate subscriber information requires a fair amount of parsing (multiple phone numbers to sort and format, hour of day, timezone, comparisons for possible substitutions of user information, etc.). Again, in general, is it preferred that one have client-side do the work? It seems to me 'yes' in a situation in which one will have many thousands of hits per minute. Use php for quick database queries ... process retrieved data client-side. yes ... no?

• Problem decrementing in Java with '-='

  I'm making a scrolling game on Android and am having a hard time figuring out why the code below does not decrement past 0. Objects start at the end of the screen (so the x position is equal to the width of the screen) the objects move accross the screen by decrementing their x positions. I want them to scroll off of the screen, but when the x position hits 0, the objects just stay at 0, they do not move into the negatives. • Enumerate all k-partitions of 1d array with N elements?

  This seems like a simple request, but google is not my friend because "partition" scores a bunch of hits in database and filesystem space. I need to enumerate all partitions of an array of N values (N is constant) into k sub-arrays. The sub-arrays are just that - a starting index and ending index. The overall order of the original array will be preserved. For example, with N=4 and k=2: [ | a b c d ] (0, 4) [ a | b c d ] (1, 3) [ a b | c d ] (2, 2) [ a b c | d ] (3, 1) [ a b c d | ] (4, 0) I'm pretty sure this isn't an original problem (and no, it's not homework), but I'd like to do it for every k <= N, and it'd be great if the later passes (as k grows) took advantage of earlier results. My use case is below: I have empty data grid in my application. user will drag and drop one column from available column list box into data grid. The data grid will start displaying data for that column. Now, I will drag another column into data grid and now grid should get populated data of two columns. • Select distinct ... inner join vs. select ... where id in (...)

  I'm trying to create a subset of a table (as a materialized view), defined as those records which have a matching record in another materialized view. For example, let's say I have a Users table with user_id and name columns, and a Log table, with entry_id, user_id, activity, and timestamp columns. First I create a materialized view of the Log table, selecting only those rows with timestamp some_date. Now I want a materliazed view of the Users referenced in my snapshot of the Log table. I can either create it as select * from Users where user_id in (select user_id from Log_mview), or I can do select distinct u.* from Users u inner join Log_mview l on u.user_id = l.user_id (need the distinct to avoid multiple hits from users with multiple log entries). The former seems cleaner and more elegant, but takes much longer. Am I missing something? Is there a better way to do this?
