• Where is the xorg.conf file in Karmic Koala (Ubuntu 9.10) ?

  I am trying to change this xorg.conf file that I used to modify under Ubuntu 9.04, so it can have the higher resolutions of my monitor. Under 9.04, the monitor was unknown, and I had to key in all resolutions in the file, and although it is found under 9.10, 9.10 does not have the highest resolution that My monitor can sustain. How can I change such setting ? Is xorg.conf moved, or replaced ? Merci :-) JF

• Crop display size in linux

  My laptop has a slightly damaged lcd - it has a black strip on the right that reduces the working resolution from 1400x1050 to about 1375x1050 - thus hiding part of the right edge of the desktop, windows, or the mouse pointer should it be unwise enough to stray there. • Dual-boot computer won't boot without external hard drive

  I have Ubuntu loaded on my external HDD. I tried to unplug the external drive so that this way I could run Windows as the default OS to boot when the computer turns on, but it gives me an error. I need to know how I can make it so that when my computers boots it stops saying Error: no such device: (a whole bunch of numbers and letters) then it says grub rescue>_. If I plug the external HDD in, and I let Ubuntu run the boot process, then it gives me a list of OS's/ HDD's to choose from and Windows 7 is there. The only problem is that I want Windows be my default OS, not the other way around. P.S. I have found that I dislike Ubuntu because I can't even figure out how to install the necessary programs to learn how to start writing Ruby On Rails. So installing it was a waste of my time, in my opinion. Now that I have it on the external hard drive, I will leave it installed though. I just dont want to have to keep that external drive plugged in to my computer all the time. Thank you a ton to whoever can help me! Thank you for the detail'd instructions. On my screen there is 4 options when MBR run's none look familiar and when I picked the best possible option based on my educated guesses it said success. I tried to restart my computer and it said Please insert windows recovery disc and hit enter. Problem being I don't have the windows recovery disc. I bought my computer from a local Computer tec and he loads windows on it for you. I have no time to run my compute over to him as sunday is my only day free. I think that I just wrecked my computer in the process of this attempted fix windows refuses to boot now WITH or WITHOUT the HDD. Please help this is getting out of hand

  I recently bought a second monitor and hooked it to my laptop. I like to put the monitor in portrait mode when coding and i can do this with igfx but i was wondering if there was a way to make a keyboard shortcut that will rotate my display 270 degrees and change my wallpaper to one that fits the 1050 X 1680 portrait resolution, and then have a key that rotates back to normal and resets my wallpaper? • How can I avoid Windows 8.1 resetting my font size?

  I am using Windows 8.1 on my laptop, which has a 15.6" screen with resolution 1366x768. I measured the screen with a ruler and calculated its DPI, which is 101. Therefore, I have set the scaling to 105%. However, when I change to an external monitor, which is a huge one with resolution 1920x1080 and DPI 93, I need to change the scaling to 97% but when I change the DPI back and forth, my font sizes have get resetted. I prefer using font sizes 14 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 13 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. However, as my laptop screen is too small, in order to make my apps fit on screen, I use font sizes 12 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 11 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. I don't know why I can't resize the window to make it larger than my screen in Windows (but it is possible in Kubuntu), therefore, some parts of my apps cannot be shown with my preferred font size. I have tried changing both the DPI and the font size by using .reg files. However, on my laptop screen, after I applied the file, signed out and in, the DPI setting changed, but the font sizes were resetted to tiny, and I had to apply the same file, signed out and in again to get the correct font size. After I applied the file, signed out and in, both the DPI setting and the font sizes were resetted to their default values, which were 96 DPI (the physical DPI as measured by dividing the resolution by the physical size is 93) and font size 9, which is totally unacceptable. • Best way to export powerpoint slides into pngs with different resoltuions?

  I am trying to convert powerpoint slides into a png. I know that there are several ways that allow to do this by allowing for changing the resolution (e.g., within powerpoint by changing the registry, or using pdf printers as proposed here and here). However, always changing the registry is cumbersome and using the pdf printer (bullzip printer and pdfforge) is not working as expected. Does anyone know of easy, free and reliable way to export powerpoint (2010) slides into png pictures while allowing to easily change the resoltuion?

Now, I know how to run Ubuntu from USB drive, I created addition partition and formatted it to EXT4. So I'm ready to install. Now, 'Device for boot loader installation:' displays: /dev/sta ATA HITACHI (750 GB) /dev/sta1 Windows 8 (loader) /dev/sta2 /dev/sta5 /dev/sta6 Ubuntu 12.04 (12.04) /dev/stb I tries choosing Ubuntu 12.04 partition but it doesn't even let me to pick which OS to install and goes straight to Windows 8. Which partition I must choose to be able to pick which OS to boot from? Preferably, set up so Windows 8 will be at first place, and Ubuntu on second. Any ideas? I don't want to mess up anything if I pick something wrong.

Func<int> d = Method; A property is a wrapper around a getter and setter method, and I want to create a delegate to a property getter method. • What is the best way to call a method right AFTER a form loads?

  I have a C# windows forms application. The way I currently have it set up, when Form1_Load() runs it checks for recovered unsaved data and if it finds some it prompts the user if they want to open that data. When the program runs it works alright but the message box is shown right away and the main program form (Form1) does not show until after the user clicks yes or no. I would like the Form1 to pop up first and then the message box prompt. Now to get around this problem before I have created a timer in my Form, started the timer in the Form1_Load() method, and then performed the check and user prompt in the first Timer Tick Event. This technique solves the problem but is seems like there might be a better way. Do you guys have any better ideas? Edit: I think I have also used a background worker to do something similar. It just seems kinda goofy to go through all the trouble of invoking the method to back to the form thread and all that crap just to have it delayed a couple milliseconds!

• Extra fulltext ordering criteria beyond default relevance

  I'm implementing an ingredient text search, for adding ingredients to a recipe. I've currently got a full text index on the ingredient name, which is stored in a single text field, like so: "Sauce, tomato, lite, Heinz" I've found that because there are a lot of ingredients with very similar names in the database, simply sorting by relevance doesn't work that well a lot of the time. So, I've found myself sorting by a bunch of my own rules of thumb, which probably duplicates a lot of the full-text search algorithm which spits out a numerical relevance. For instance (abridged): ORDER BY [ingredient name is exactly search term], [ingredient name starts with search term], [ingredient name starts with any word from the search and contains all search terms in some order], [ingredient name contains all search terms in some order], ...and so on. Each of these is defined in the SELECT specification as an expression returning either 1 or 0, and so I order by those in sequential order. I would love to hear suggestions for: A better way to define complicated order-by criteria in one place, say perhaps in a view or stored procedure that you can pass just the search term to and get back a set of results without having to worry about how they're ordered? A better tool for this than MySQL's fulltext engine -- perhaps if I was using Sphinx or something [which I've heard of but not used before], would I find some sort of complicated config option designed to solve problems like this? Some google search terms which might turn up discussion on how to order text items within a specific domain like this? I haven't found much that's of use. Thanks for reading!

Please help me explain this. I've also tried to mount a ram disk and use dd to benchmark it and I get similar differences so I don't think mbw is to blame. I've checked the BIOS settings and the memory seem to be running at full speed. According to the hosting company the modules are all OK. Could this have something to do with NUMA? It seems like Node Interleaving is disabled on this server. • What is the purpose of a boot priority sequence or order in BIOS

  A BIOS provides multiple options for specifying an order/priority to search for boot devices. Is there really much of a purpose now to have to specify more than one possible boot device? It would seem to me it is only useful when popping in an CD/DVD to install an OS after which the common scenario is to always boot from the hard drive unless something is broken. I'm curious as to why not simply have 1 option/device to set in the BIOS and expect the user to press a key to do alternate boot instead? Is there still a scenario for having the BIOS try multiple devices in a configured order?

Would it be possible to plot the above data in a chart or coordinate system. Where the each plot should be a summary of all sales in the same map coordinate. Also a similar chart of order count would be nice to have.

• What's up with tab order on my Mac?

  So, I just got my first Mac. It is slick, and I feel like I don't know how to do anything, but overall it is a great machine. However, I am becoming frustrated with the tab order in most web pages. For example, this site. If I am composing a comment and press tab, focus is set to the address bar. I would like the focus to shift to the button next to the text area, but no luck. Also, I cannot seem to tab into combo boxes in form pages. What is going on here exactly? This happens in FireFox as well as Safari. I don't get why the tab order of a page would not be respected. Any help is appreciated.

• Eclipse Juno Switch Editor in Order

  In case it matters: OS: Mac OS X Lion (10.7.4) Eclipse: Juno, Build id: 20120614-1722 I have several files open in my eclipse workspace as tabs. The default shortcuts for previous and next editors are ?F6 and ?shiftF6. I know how to change these shortcuts, that's not the issue. However, what I want to do, is switch between editors in the way in which they're ordered in the tab bar. Currently, the editors change in order of last used/viewed. So, if I had three files (A, B and C in order) open and I'm currently editing A and I edited B last, when I use the shortcut for "Previous Editor", it takes me to B instead of C (and vice versa). Is there any way for me to get this functionality out of eclipse (if so, how)? Thank you

• Enum.HasFlag method in C# 4.0

  Enums in dot net programming is a great facility and we all used it to increase code readability. In earlier version of .NET framework we don’t have any method anything that will check whether a value is assigned to it or not. In C# 4.0 we have new static method called HasFlag which will check that particular value is assigned or not. Let’s take an example for that. First I have created a enum called PaymentType which could have two values Credit Card or Debit Card. • Why not to use StackTrace to find what method called you

  Our obfuscator, SmartAssembly, does some pretty crazy reflection. It's an obfuscator, it's sort of its job to do things in the most awkward way possible. But sometimes, you can go too far. One such time is this little gem from the strings encoding feature: StackTrace stackTrace = new StackTrace(); StackFrame frame = stackTrace.GetFrame(1); Type ownerType = frame.GetMethod().DeclaringType; It's designed to find the type where the calling method is defined. A user found that strings encoding occasionally broke on x64 systems. Very strange. After some debugging (thank god for Reflector Pro, it would be impossible to debug processed assemblies without it) I found that the ownerType I got back was wrong. The reason is that the x64 JIT does tail call optimisation. This saves space on the stack, and speeds things up, by throwing away a method's stack frame if the last thing that it calls is the only thing returned. When this happens, the call to StackTrace faithfully tells you that the calling method is the one that called the one we really wanted. So using StackTrace isn't safe for anything other than debugging, and it will make your code fail in unpredictable ways. Don't use it!

  One of the cooler things you can do with groovy is automatic type conversion.  If you want to convert an object to another type, many times all you have to do is invoke the ‘as’ keyword: def letters = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz' as List But, what if you are wanting to do something a little fancier, like converting a String to a Date? def christmas = '12-25-2010' as Date ERROR org.codehaus.groovy.runtime.typehandling.GroovyCastException: Cannot cast object '12-25-2010' with class java.lang.String' to class 'java.util.Date' No bueno! I want to be able to do custom type conversions so that my application can do a simple String to Date conversion. Enter the metaMethod. • Handling Indirection and keeping layers of method calls, objects, and even xml files straight

  How do you keep everything straight as you trace deeply into a piece of software through multiple method calls, object constructors, object factories, and even spring wiring. I find that 4 or 5 method calls are easy to keep in my head, but once you are going to 8 or 9 calls deep it gets hard to keep track of everything. Are there strategies for keeping everything straight? In particular, I might be looking for how to do task x, but then as I trace down (or up) I lose track of that goal, or I find multiple layers need changes, but then I lose track of which changes as I trace all the way down. Or I have tentative plans that I find out are not valid but then during the tracing I forget that the plan is invalid and try to consider the same plan all over again killing time.... Is there software that might be able to help out? grep and even eclipse can help me to do the actual tracing from a call to the definition but I'm more worried about keeping track of everything including the de-facto plan for what has to change (which might vary as you go down/up and realize the prior plan was poor). In the past I have dealt with a few big methods that you trace and pretty much can figure out what is going on within a few calls. But now there are dozens of really tiny methods, many just a single call to another method/constructor and it is hard to keep track of them all.
